Firstly the preparation and setup for the Wood and Metal Show, which was an amazing success and on the Sunday of the Show we had Linwood House, next came the Dutch Club which was also another success. In between these Jill, Lynne, Eddie and myself became Easter Bunnies at the Children s Ward Mt Druitt Hospital with a bowl of eggs for each of the children stuck in hospital over Easter. I would like to thank everyone for all their help and planning for all of the above in making them the success that they were and a special thanks to Chris Vodden, Jill Catford and Lynne Young at the Show for helping out while all of us were running around doing other things. Our mentoring is drawing to a close with some excellent work from the guys and a big thank you to our mentors without whose help this project would never be as good as it is. The Trend Day went well, thanks volunteers, as well as the Maxi Day with Santa thanks Rohan for the excellent lunch. Jobs and projects are still progressing around the Club which helps everyone. The Blacktown Council have given us a new 5 year lease on the property which is great as the Club can now go forward in the future. An item to think about is our power bill which is now topping $1300 a quarter so please turn off those lights and switches that are not in use.. Till next month Happy Turning. Bob Young. 3 METAL AND WOOD SHOW - ROSEHILL RACECOURSE Well the Show is over and I believe it was an outstanding success on both Expertise s part and especially our side of things. The site and set up were fantastic with a large central display of members work for show only and I just wish that more members would supply items for display as this only promotes woodturning because of the excellent work I know members can produce. The Members work for sale was vast and of fine quality as usual and impressed the visitors greatly judging by their looks and the sales, and not only visitors but quite a few of the stall holders purchased and viewed the items on display. We had a great number of prospective new members making enquiries about joining the Club and woodworking in general. Charity bowls and camphor shavings were flying out which gave us a record collection for our charity. New to our demonstrations was a lathe set aside for people to have a try at turning with mainly Eddie and Ken helping people to try some basic turning. It was amazing the number of people who said that they would love to have a go at turning, consequently they were led to the machine for a lesson from the able warriors. The other side of the display area was turned over to our other volunteers giving a display of Pen Making, Bowl turning and other detail work like Candlestick Holders, etc., also we had a Pyrography & Scroll Saw Display. David and Kim also showed a series of Wood Carvings. All in all we had a fantastic Show and look forward to our next one. Bob Young.

Dutch Club March Maxi Day Report I would like to thank all the Club members who attended the Rembrandt Dutch Club over Easter.

Members enjoyed the smoked trout and the beer!! Thanks Jill for attending to the sale of the charity bowls on the Saturday.

5 Dutch Club March Maxi Day Report I would like to thank all the Club members who attended the Rembrandt Dutch Club over Easter. We were very busy and we had a lot of people asking questions about our club which may result in some new members. I think everybody sold some of their products and the Charity was well supported. Members enjoyed the smoked trout and the beer!! Thanks Jill for attending to the sale of the charity bowls on the Saturday. Once again the Dutch Club has been very good for our Charity, the Club and also for the member s products. On behalf of the President and myself I thank the members once again for their attendance. Thank you. Manny This Maxi Day was conducted by Bob Hodge Santa as he prefers, on a lot of very interesting topics some revolving around history and a lot more on the art of wood turning, both topics Bob is well conversed in. As Bob is our recognised teacher and trainer he comes prepared with his teaching aids of over sized wooden tools that he used to explain their features and the correct method of sharpening and use. As usual it would not be a demonstration or any discussion for that matter, if he didn t make reference to his beloved Skew, where he explained the respective cutting edges and points and how to use those areas for maximum performance. Bob then went on to the correct method of using the belt sander highlighting the areas of abuse and how they can be avoided with just simple common sense. He made reference to cleaning after use with the rubber cleaning the grit along with what causes clogging of the grit and how it can be avoided. Bob then went onto turning a box with a finial explaining how someone had broken one of his pieces while he had been demonstrating and not telling him and how he though people should be careful and own up to doing damage. Continuing on he demonstrated turning a scoop, offset turning then proceeded to turn a miniature goblet. Bob then discussed turning a shadow piece that would fit together when split and how and why he uses paper as a means of separating the two pieces. As this took up the morning session it was time for the lunch break after which he continued on with discussions and demonstrations on the use and when and when not to use the roughing gouge being very forceful in when NOT to use it. As part of the demonstration he made a handle for a roughing gouge and explained the method he used to fit the Ferrell and steel all very interesting and adding an alternative to many other known methods....p.t.o... 5

Also I never cease to be amazed at the quality of the display items in our Show and Tell, it is even better when some of our newer members Display and wanting constructive critique. Trend Open Day - March 2013 Paul Colins and I had a great time at Trend as always. On both days Paul made pens and always had a small crowd of curious onlookers who asked many questions as to what he was doing the poor fellow seemed worn out from all the questions! I turned using my Carbide cutters and had a similar amount of interest. Even older traditional turners where very curious about the cutters and how they are used, with many questions as to where they can be purchased. A large number of Club members came to visit during the two days we were there which made the time even better. Please remember that Trend supports our Club so it would be good if more members could help support Trend! 9
