1 TREEN TOPICS JUNE 2017 May Meeting Steve Sheaves was our speaker on the night on the subject of sharpening turning chisels. He has an 8 grinder dedicated to this job and it is set up with a sharpening jig. The use of a jig will guarantee consistent results with the same bevel achieved every time and it will minimise the amount of steel which is taken off the chisel each time it is ground. Steve ground a roughing gouge and passed it around the members to view the finished result. It is important to use a light touch when grinding to save the chisel over heating which will cause it to blue and the steel to soften. Grinding is only done when necessary as a very sharp edge can be maintained for long periods by honing. This process can be done quickly without the loss of any steel from the tool. For anyone new to the game, Steve is available for advice and help on this subject. Charlie Hillen turned three boxes after reading a book on the subject and the results are impressive. The larger one is in Himalayn cedar with a filial on the lid with two smaller tear shaped ones in coachwood and poplar. Watch this space for more in the future. Photos of these three are below. June Meeting Steve and Jim will be talking about and demonstrating the techniques of applying a friction finish and a CA finish to turned items on the lathe. Contributions from members on their own experience using these finishes will also be welcome. The more ideas which are discussed and tried the better. Because our meetings commence at 6.30 now, rugby league fans will still be able to attend the meeting and then be home quite comfortably for the start of the second state of origin game which will not kick off until Annual Subscriptions Subs are now due and will only cost you $25. Treasurer Bev is away at the moment but you can still pay by direct debit. In past years there have always been a number of people who are late in paying and that is not fair to your fellow members. We get excellent value for our $25 so please do the right thing and be prompt in paying this year. Bunnings Barbeque Helpers are really needed for this important fund raiser on Saturday 24 th June. It is the first of only three barbeques for the rest of this year so you are not going to be asked to turn up every two months. There is a lot of work to do on the day and the pressure is on for a few hours during the middle of the day. It is far too much to expect seven or eight people to run one of these barbeques for the whole day. With fifty or so members in the club we should be able to muster fifteen or so who can help. 2 Annual General Meeting The AGM has traditionally been held as part of the July general meeting on the third Wednesday but this year there will be No general meeting in July. Instead, there will be a brief AGM held at 5.00 PM on Tuesday 1 st August prior to the Tuesday workshop. All positions on the committee can be considered vacant so feel free to put your name forward for any of them. We are definitely in need of a secretary as Peter Jackson is not able to continue in this job. This position must be filled or the club cannot continue to function. Rumour has it that Greg has some good news on this front which we may hear on Wednesday night. Social Night This will be on again in August at a different venue. The Camberwarra Estate Winery is the go this year and the menu can be seen on this link : _may_19_to_july_16.pdf. The address is 520 Illaroo Road, Bangalee, which is on the right hand side just after Hockey s Lane. We need to be there at 6.00 PM on Wednesday 16 th August. Creative Moments This event is starting to approach rather rapidly with only four months to go before it begins. Alan Stasiukynas has provided the detailed information below which is just about all you need to know as far as entries go Creative Moments Exhibition & Takeaway Sales Dates: Drop off articles: 3rd October 2017 between 9am 11am at the Gallery Exhibition Opening: 7th October with the launch from 12 noon Exhibition Closes: 28th October 2pm Guessing Competition draw (raffle) draw at 1pm 28 October Exhibition & unsold takeaway sales pick up - 28th October from 2pm as per last year Important Information: 2017 Exhibition is to have a theme The River. The River Festival is on in October which is why the theme was chosen and there is likely to be an installation or activities which link the exhibition to the River festival. The River Festival is on Saturday 28th October, the closing day of the exhibition. Going to try it for this year and then decide for next year whether we have another theme or not Maximum number of exhibition works entered per person this year will be 8 as the gallery want to limit the number of articles to about 200.

3 Works are to be limited to a maximum size of 1.5m2; e.g. 1m x 1.5m or 2m x.75m and variations thereof. If you have large articles, please notify the CM committee members (Woodies - Jim Davey, Alan Stasiukynas) The gallery is not able to hang work from the ceiling due to WHS restrictions and low ceiling heights. If there is something that someone wants desperately to be hung it will be in a corner or boxed in by plinths so that no one can injure themselves on it. Minimum price for exhibition items for sale is $25. Entry fees will be the same as previous years ($5), as will commission (15% - to the 3 Groups, not to the gallery). If work doesn t have a demonstrated link to the theme then it will not be placed in the exhibition hall by the gallery but placed in Take away sales room The theme can be included in your work through a motif, the name of the article, the material used, don t be bound by thinking that the river is just water, as it is much more than that and has had a very significant impact upon life here for thousands of years. The gallery wants us to do the best work that we can to lift the exhibition to Regional Gallery standard, and they have locked us in for 5 years with dates. From July the gallery will be the Shoalhaven Regional Gallery. The exhibition in the main gallery during Creative Moments will be local by Jim Burkett from Bundanon Trust. However, the gallery does not want to see repetitive works, such as a series of scarves which look the same or several copies of the same box, pot etc. If there are a lot of the same type of article, works are likely to end up in the take away sales room (no theme there you can put in what you like). Each group will have one representative on the curation committee as per last year, it worked really well and the gallery would like to continue to use that process - COULD SOMEONE PLEASE PUT THEIR HAND UP FOR THIS Each group will have at least one representative on duty each day as per normal, morning and afternoon on weekdays and 10-2pm on Saturdays. Woodies will staff the main exhibition counter. Takeaway Sales You can only sell things in the takeaway area if you have one or more items in the exhibition. No limit to the number of items. Items here do not have to be on the River theme. 15% commission is paid on all sales (15% - to the 3 Groups, not to the gallery)..the Potters and Spinners & Weavers will staff the Takeaway Sales area.
