2 PAGE 2 THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN, PUEBLO, COLORADO THURSDAY, JULY 13, 2017 It s hard to believe what started as a mid-day concert in July has grown into the celebrated five weeks of summer and three weeks of winter festivals Pueblo has come to cherish as Festival Fridays. The event started as many do - as a way to boost awareness of the Arts Center. The first outdoor concert held at the Center was in 1980, at noon on a day in July. Despite what we imagine to be a pretty hot affair, the concert was a success and the program eventually grew to become evening shows known as Festival Fridays. The Arts Center was only 8 years old at the time. In addition to the evening concerts, in 1982 the schedule was announced for the return of Midday Music and Munching concerts on the paseo which were held on Thursdays from 11:30 to 1:30. Food was for sale or guests could bring their own. The four concerts held were Steel City Band, Manhattan, Alto Heaven, and Shelly Rhum. In 1992, the concerts expanded to the winter months and the first ever Winter Festival Friday was deemed a success with over 200 tickets sold! That same year, 3,144 people attended the 3 summer Festival Friday events. The Festival had become an important revenue source for the Center, supporting many arts education programs throughout the year. Festival Fridays had established itself as a way to bring individuals together creatively to celebrate music, public art, and positivity. Today, the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center s Festival Fridays guests bring blankets, lawn chairs, and their dancing shoes to enjoy cocktails, food, and outstanding live musical entertainment. Choose Your Shoes: Remember, this is an outdoor event. We recommend navigating the sidewalks and grass in comfortable shoes and leaving the stilettos at home. Document the Experience: Social media is great for a lot of things and posting pictures of you and your friends at Festival Fridays is one of them! Use the hashtags #TGIFF or #FestivalFridays to join the conversation. Come hungry. Food by Cinfully Delicious is available at Festival Fridays, with popular items like the monster burrito and nachos. Skip the trouble of making dinner at home, and plan to take advantage of 2-for-1 drinks during Happy Hour from 6:30-7:30pm with authentic Mexican food for dinner. Go it alone: While Festival Fridays are a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends, they re also a good time to make some new ones. Don t be afraid to dance! You don t have to be a dancing machine to bust a few moves on the dance floor. Music was made for moving, and it s no coincidence that the people on the dance floor seem to be having more fun. This 7 member, horn powered, high energy band has performed at so many Festival Fridays that even the band members can t put a number on it. Consistently voted a top band, is known for their fantastic covers of popular music, but also have released 4 albums of original material. We thrive on being a party band, says lead singer Andy Clementi. We like to play all the fun stuff. has opened for Eddie Money, Blue Oyster Cult, and FogHat, and the band lists some of its major influences as Barenaked Ladies, Reel Big Fish and 311. The band formed in 2000, and for most local groups, staying together for 17 years shows the popularity of the group. Playing the Arts Center is like coming home for Clementi. It s always an honor to be asked to play, because it s a great event, it s for a great cause. Just amazing things happen, Clementi said during a 2015 interview. When we re there I can t help but think of the first time that I got to perform as a child on that stage, or take an art class, or a dance class. They play a variety of music from Tex-Mex, New Mexico, Oldies, Country, and much more. It s really neat the people we get to meet while we do this is hard to believe sometimes, says Travis, the lead singer of the band. Travis was born in Pueblo, Colorado and still has friends and family in Pueblo. There are a lot of great bands that play there on Fridays and we re happy to be part of it, he says of Festival Fridays. We try to do the whole package we try to make the music sound as authentic as possible and present the image and the show just as if you were at a show back in the 80s, says Travis. Two parts Gloria Gaynor, 3 parts KC & The Sunshine Band, some Kool and the Gang and a big dose of the Bee Gees, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Donna Summer and you ve got Boogie Machine, Colorado s premier Disco and 70 s band for over 18 years! From outrageous costumes to rocking rhythms they ll light up the evening at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center s Festival Fridays on August 11th. The band s long list of favorites includes: Kung Fu Fighting, Night Fever, I Will Survive, Le Freak, The Hustle, Boogie Oogie, Oogie, Dancing Queen, and so, so many more. Band member Jerry Bergeson says, Festival Fridays is always a great time for Boogie Machine. There s usually people dressed up and they re definitely there to dance and party. So, if you want to Shake Your Groove Thing and Get Down Tonight like we re on a Love Rollercoaster, then come on down to Funkytown for some Hot Stuff, because the party starts with two-for-one happy hour at 6:30 and Boogie Machine at 7:30.
