2 Thursday, May 18, 2017 Page 2I The Pueblo Chieftain Pueblo, Colorado The Loaf N Jug Boats, Bands and BBQ festival has been a staple event on the Riverwalk for the last 17 years. What started as a backyard BBQ on Lake Elizabeth has grown to the largest event hosted by the HARP Foundation on the Riverwalk. The HARP Foundation provides direct support to the Riverwalk for future enhancements, and beautifi cation. For the past 17 years, the event has been a sanctioned KCBS BBQ competition, bringing over 30 teams from all of the country to compete for a $10,000 cash/prize purse. We pay out the following BBQ categories including pork, chicken, brisket, ribs, sauce and salsa- this year we have added a new category of people s choice. People s choice puts the decision in the hands of the public, you get access to taste pork from all of the teams on Saturday from 1:00pm to 3:00pm in the public tent, then place your vote and see who won at the awards ceremony on the Pueblo Toyota Stage at 4:00pm Saturday. You can purchase your People s Choice ticket for $15 online at puebloriverwalk.org for $15, which includes admission to the entire festival. The festival would not be complete without 4 stages of live music and 17 bands. The stages are located throughout the festival grounds and offer a wide variety of music. Each year we try to bring new music to Pueblo at this event by offering bands an opportunity to play at one of the stages. We have bands from Texas, Wyoming, Colorado and many favorite local bands to come check out over the 2-day festival. Gate admission is only $6 to come enjoy the music and the beautiful Riverwalk; you can also buy the super ticket from area Loaf N Jug stores and get into the festival for both days. Our newest addition to the event is the Barrel Brothers Liquor Steel City Brewfest. We have collaborated with Barrel Brothers Liquor, Henderson Insurance and Felicia Beltran with Remax to put on an amazing Brewfest on the Riverwalk. We have over 20 breweries signed up for the event all bringing over four types of beers for Brewfest guests to sample. We will also have a wide variety of lawn games for guests to play while they are sipping on great brews!

But don t be fooled by all those hundreds of thousands of miles on Micky & the Motorcars odometer: pop the hood of Hearts From Above, the long-running Austin band s seventh album, and you ll find a brand-new engine, fine-tuned and good to run for at least as many more miles still ahead. And behind the wheel? Two brothers and founding members Micky Braun (lead vocals and guitar) and Gary Braun (guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and vocals) invigorated and supercharged by a transfusion of new blood from fresh recruits Josh Owen (lead guitar, pedal steel guitar), Joe Fladger (bass), and Bobby Paugh (drums). 8 Thursday, May 18, 2017 Page 8I The Pueblo Chieftain Pueblo, Colorado This summer, Chancey Williams will release the highly anticipated album, Rodeo Cold Beer, the commercial follow-up to his Billboard Heatseekers Charting album, Echo. The Wyoming native and his Younger Brothers Band, have relentlessly toured the Western United States, developing a rabid fan base not seen from the Cowboy State since Chris LeDoux. In fact, Chancey Williams and LeDoux are the only two people to ride in the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo (one of the most famous in the world, the touted Daddy of Em All) and play its main stage as a major entertainer. Chancey and his drummer, lifelong friend Travis DeWitt, started the Younger Brothers Band with the humble initial goal of entering a high school talent contest. The pair had no idea it would lead to wedding receptions, small fairs (then big fairs), small bars (then large clubs) and become a full-time career. In 2008 they were joined by the amazing harmonies and lead guitar of Wyatt Springsteen and then Brooke Latka with stunning fiddle and a 3rd part to their harmonies. More re-

The result is Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers Band, a rowdy, raucous, unapologetic, memorable stage show that is on the road pretty much all the time. Somewhere along the way, playing for friends became playing for wild fans. The studio album Honky Tonk Road was released in 2008, Highway Junkie in 2011, and the Billboard Heat seeker Charting, Echo in Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers have sold, between digital downloads and CD sales, more than 40,000 records, almost unheard- of for an independent artist without the aid of major distribution or a record label. Now, for 2017, the band is set to release the new album and video for the title track, Rodeo Cold Beer and commence a big summer tour of the same name. Williams co-wrote much of the album with Nashville s singer-songwriter, Trent Willmon. Willmon has songwriting credits with a variety of country artists, including Eric Church, Little Big Town, and Brad Paisley among others. He knows how to entertain a crowd and has a great song sense, and he has that cowboy work ethic, respect, and good nature that is almost impossible to find these days. My name is Mike Eberle and I will be one of the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) Contest Officials (Rep) for Boats Bands & BBQ May This will be my 3rd year Repping the contest and out of the over 100 contests I ve been to, it s one of my favorites. The Riverwalk is a great location to host a contest and the Pueblo hospitality is second to none. The role of a Contest Rep involves more than making sure the rules are followed, but also working with the Contest Organizer to make sure the contest runs smoothly. My Rep partner, Robert Hahn, and I have been working with Christine Pittman for several months discussing everything from recruiting teams and judges to how many crackers, bottles of water and rolls of paper towels are needed. It s quite an undertaking and I d like to thank Thursday, May 18, 2017 Page 11I Christine and her crew for doing a fantastic job. As far as the contest goes, top teams from Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota will put their smoking skills to the test to see who will be crowned Grand Champion (GC). KCBS Certified Judges will spend a couple of hours judging chicken, pork ribs, Mike Eberle pork butt and brisket, determining the winner in each category and also the Grand and Reserve Grob of Backdraft BBQ and Tom Grand Champions. Let me Bands & BBQ is the GC Plunge. tell ya, the water level rose a few Teams aren t just competing for inches when those two big fellas the GC Trophy, but also for the (in the BBQ world, we call that honor of taking The GC Plunge, BBQ medium) hit the water. I m a tradition started in 2008, into looking forward to this year s conthe Arkansas River. I have had the privilege of watching Ryan test and hope to see you there.
