1 Effective storytelling skills Ms Shaireen Selamat Storytelling and Reading Stories Reading aloud is important. However being told a story has elements not present when a book is read aloud. CREATIVE Storytelling is ACTIVE RESPONSIVE INCLUSIVE FLEXIBLE EMOTIONAL 1

5 How to select stories A small number of well defined characters A well defined yet simple plot with a clear underlying theme An easily detected structure of sequence of events Repetition of key events or phrases Colourful or evocative language Checklist: The story Do you know the story line? Will your beginning captivate the audience? Was your conclusion satisfying for the listeners? Did you need to memorise any important phrases? Are you confident to use your own words? Checklist : The language Are you aware of the word power? Think of any words in the story which you can bring alive. Did you make your characters, LAUGH, DANCE, SING, WOBBLE etc? Choose ten words in your story which you think you can breathe more life. Checklist : Your Body Do your eyes help to tell the story? Do you need to change your facial expression for any characters? Are you communicating with your audience? Can your audience hear you? Remember the power of PAUSE! Finger story 5

8 He bought the cloth and cut t carefully so as not to waste any. He sewed up the coat and it fit him perfectly. He was proud of the coat. He wore it even if it was just the least bit cold. He wore it and he wore it and he wore it until it was all worn out. At least it seemed to be all worn out but when he looked more closely he saw that there was just enough material to make a jacket! So he cut up the coat and made a jacket. It fit just as well as the coat and he could wear it even more often. He wore it and he wore it and he wore it until it was all worn out. Riddle Story : The hungry Vikings Long ago a band of Vikings with their wives and children made ready for a long journey.they would sail from Norway to Iceland to make new homes. They would be at sea for weeks, living on hard crackers and dried cold meat. They could not cook on board for fear of fire.they knew they would be yearning for a good meal of roast beef when they reached land. But any beed they would bring along would spoil before they got to Iceland. Rolf Hairybeard the Viking Chiefcaptain talked over the problem with some of his men. We could tie long ropes to big pieces of meat and let them trail in the water.that might keep them cool enough so they would not spoil. Sharks would eat the meat Hairy beard answered. Let s keep the meat on board the ship but pile up snow and ice around it to keep it cold said another Viking. The ship would get full of water when the ice and snow melted objected Hairybeard. I can tell you how to keep the meat fresh for as long as you want said Hairybeard s wife. When she told them they all agreed it would work. What was her idea? 8
