1 F A L L Pro Climb Climbing Services for Forestry, Arboriculture and Vegetation Management Hello Everyone! Thank you for signing up to the Pro Climb newsletter. Its purpose is to keep you up to date with Pro Climb workshops, arb events, and interesting articles about rigging and tree climbing. The newsletter is published every 10 weeks. I hope you all had a great summer holiday and are enjoying the cooler mornings of this sunny autumn. Our thoughts are with all our friends and colleges in Christchurch and we all hope that we will soon see this beautiful city rebuilt. It warms my heart to see the nationwide support for Christchurch and it makes me proud to call New Zealand my home. We have decided to cancel the South Island workshop weeks for now, but we will set up a new program soon. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss workshop events in your region. -Rossy Asia - Pacific TCC in Singapore Save the Date Date! To read more follow this link to the ISA website and book your ticket today. Treemagineers Workshop presented by NZAA The Treemagineers are three practicing arborists from Europe who have joined forces with leading product developers to increase the safety and productivity of tree climbing and tree rigging. Pro Climb Climbing and Rigging Workshops New Plymouth -- Climbing 1/ Introduction to Modern Tree Climbing Wellington -- Rigging 1 / Introduction to Tree Rigging Wellington -- Rigging 2 / Advanced Tree Dismantling and Rigging Techniques Wellington -- Rigging 3 / Sky and Speed Lines for Tree Dismantling and Material Transport All of the workshops listed above help mastering the body of knowledge required for the ISA Certified Arborist and Certified Climber Specialist Exam. 3 PRO CLIMB FALL 2011 Training Tree Rigging Training Aerial rescue Training Tree Climbing Training Tree rigging is the art of dismantling trees in confined spaces. We use ropes and mechanical devices to build rigging systems that will help us minimise the impact on the surrounding environment. The Aerial rescue techniques have majorly improved over the last few years. While only a short time ago many aerial rescue techniques were utterly complex. The more recent development has deliver techniques that need little gear and are at the same time very safe and efficient. Aerial rescue out of a double rope system Our climbing workshops range from simple introductions to advanced big tree climbing courses. All techniques shown are specifically designed and approved for tree climbing. Introduction to Tree Rigging Advanced Tree Dismantling and Rigging Techniques Sky and Speed Lines for Tree Dismantling and Material Transport Best Practice for Crane Assisted Tree Dismantling Introduction to Tree Climbing Aerial rescue out of a single rope system Introduction to Modern Tree Climbing Aerial rescue out of a footlock access system Advanced Tree Climbing Techniques Aerial rescue from pole (no top anchor) Aerial rescue power lines Introduction to SRT Access (Single Rope Technique) a around For more information visit our website or contact Andreas (Rossy) directly at andreas@proclimb.co.nz or

4 Article Working the rigging rope All of us who have worked as a groundy in the tree care industry will know the call from the climber or EPV operator let it run bro!. And we all know then that we are supposed let the rigging rope run through our hands and stop it only short of the object that is to be protected. But the question is always: how far do we let it run, and more important: when and how do we stop it? Rigging set-up If we look at a simple rigging system it will consist of a lowering device (e.g. Rigging Bollard), a rope redirecting point RRP (false crotch, pulley or natural crotch) and a rope. Depending on the components of the rigging system, as well as the position of the load to the RRP, the forces will vary in the rigging system! The further the load falls before we start decelerating it, the more kinetic energy will be developed; the quicker we decelerate the load, the greater the impact force. These forces are the reason why anchor points or rigging ropes break. Reducing these forces will make your rigging safer and put less strain on your rigging gear. How to reduce preventable forces So to reduce the forces in the tree when rigging, the climber (EPV operator) needs to ensure that all slings and knots are tied with minimum slack. The ground worker needs to ensure that the rigging rope is pre-tensioned and all slack is removed from the rigging rope. After these preparations are completed, the load will only generate minimum force when released because the load will only fall the shortest possible distance. To further reduce the forces generated while rigging, the ground worker (rigger) needs to decelerate the load to a stop using all room available. Important is that the load is decelerated and controlled at all times and is not first dropped and then quickly stopped. This again wound generate high peak forces. This is because instead of decelerating and using up energy, the load is falling and building up kinetic energy. 4

5 PRO CLIMB RIGGING BOLLARD WWL: 1000KG Max Rope Diameter: 35 mm The Pro Climb Rigging Bollard (PCRB) is a friction device used in tree work for lowering tree sections like branches and trunk wood. Loads should not exceed 1000kg. The PCRB is designed with a safety factor of 5:1, in line with international user standards. To allow the user to use their preferred rope type, we have designed the PCRB with an enlarged drum of 140mm in diameter. This allows the use of ropes that are up to 35mm in diameter without going under a 4:1 bend ratio. The enlarged drum guarantees that all rope diameters and types will run smoothly around it in all rigging situations. The enlarged drum also cools faster due to the greater surface area.
