2 RESCUE BELAY DEVICE Code RBD-COMPACT USING THE RBD The RBD features an automatically engaged cam lock mechanism for rescue belay operations. The folding handle should only be extended when conducting lowering operations (belaying) to prevent malfunction. Two hands must be used to control the rope when lowering and the user must wear gloves. KARABINER / CONNECTIONS - Suitable connectors shall be minimum double action as specified in AS 1891: and have a minimum strength of 20kN without distortion. LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES Australian and International standards place responsibilities and a Duty of Care on employers and employees in relation to height safety. Training must be provided to users of this equipment. The information contained in these instructions does not constitute or replace the required training or release a company from its other safety obligations. Failure to provide training with this equipment to the full requirements of AS by a RESQ Training International competent trainer voids all warranty, liability written and implied in regard to safe use of this equipment. INSPECTIONS This product shall be inspected for serviceability prior to use. Check your RBD has not been damaged & functioning correctly YOUR LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT! It is also a requirement of the Australian standard that inspections should be carried out at six mthly intervals by a suitably qualified person. Discretion should be used when conducting these inspections. If any defects are identified then the equipment should be immediately withdrawn from use.

AS , EN 1891) Conforms to AS and BCCTR criteria for Rescue Belay Devices # GUARANTEE / WARRANTY - This equipment is guaranteed against faulty parts and workmanship. Warranty does not extend beyond the replacement of defective components at time of purchase. Warranty is voided if any nonapproved modifications have been made to the equipment. CAUTION! The RBD is a safe device if used correctly. However, the user is obligated to determine whether each item is suited for its intended use. In no event shall liability extend beyond the replacement cost of any item. In addition, no responsibility can be implied or assumed for any accident or injury caused by or related to its use, whether correct or otherwise. RESQ strongly recommends that you have a second safety belay when using this equipment and always use two separate independent anchor points. It is recommended that loads do not exceed 200kg as different ropes and conditions can reduce rope strength severely. RESQ RBD should not be shock loaded. If the RBD is subjected to a shock load in excess of 6kN the equipment should be withdrawn from service until the item has been inspected by a qualified competent person or returned to the manufacturer for inspection. WARNINGS: IGNORE AT YOUR PERIL! Make sure you have appropriate training and practice. Always lower / raise slowly and minimise slack line in the belay. Avoid rope bounce and shock loading. Check equipment before and after use on every occasion.

4 PRODUCT SPECIFICATION & TEST DATA Construction - Only the highest grade stainless steel and extruded aluminium is used in the RBD series. The RBD will not twist or damage the rope in any way when used normal conditions. #Test 1 Data - A 200kg load was attached to a 3meter length of 11mm static line rope. The load was raised 1 meter on a second line and released causing the RBD to arrest the fall. The 200kg load represents the combined rescue load = 1 x patient + 1 x stretcher + 1 x rescuer attendant with gear. #Test 2 Data - A 280kg load was attached to a 3 meter length of 12.5 mm static line rope. The load was raised 1 meter on a second line and released causing the RBD to arrest the fall. The test 2 was designed to conform to the requirements of the NFPA1983 rope rescue guidelines. ULTIMATE TEST STRENGTH - The RBD was tested on a test bench attached by only one (center) hole until it ultimately failed at 40kN. 5 TO LOAD HOW TO LOAD THE ROPE INTO THE RBD RUNNING END 1. Form a bite in the line and feed through as shown 2. Position rope between brake pad and cam 3. Remove slack! Use only rated kernmantle construction static life ropes with diameter of 11 mm 13mm. DO NOT USE polypropylene or polythene ropes.

6 RAISING LOADS When raising a load using the RBD the unit is used as a safety belay device. It is important that an operator constantly monitors the raising operations and ensures that all slack line is removed by pulling the rope through the RBD to minimise shock loading. The RBD can be used to raise a load either by using an inline system or Bolton system. RAISING Remove slack line USING INLINE HAUL SYSTEMS An inline haul system can be fast to rig if you only need to raise a light load up to 100kg. Generally a 3:1 MA is the easiest option however; 5:1 or compound haul systems can also be rigged with ease. IN-LINE HAUL SYSTEM Showing 3:1 MA Z rig

7 USING BOLT-ON HAUL SYSTEMS For the heavier loads or rescue loads with 2 persons the Bolton haul system will be more appropriate to use. The RBD has an attachment point for attaching bolt on haul systems. Pull rope here Bolt on haul system attached Always ensure that the folding handle is in the stowed position when raising. When resetting the haul system it is important to remove all slack from the rescue line then manually lock the rope by tying a half hitch around the device before releasing the load on the haul system. LOWERING LOADS To lower, use the folding handle in the extended position. Pull the handle gently back and control the friction and speed. Always use right hand on the rope to assist in controlling the speed and ensure gloves are worn. CAUTION! Always wear glove on the right hand when lowering loads.

8 USING A SINGLE ANCHOR If a strong anchor (21kN +) is available then a single anchor point can be used. Always use a karabiner to connect to the attachment point. USING TWO ANCHORS Two anchors can be useful to share the load between two independent anchors or to equalize the load between two anchor points. USING MULTIPLE ANCHORS To use three or more anchors together can be a useful way to share the load between several independent anchors or to equalize the load between multiple anchor points.
