1.0 PURPOSE Rollgliss RescueMate Haul Kits are available in four configurations and multiple working lengths. They are classified as either automatic or manual in their locking and unlocking function. Automatic units can be engaged and disengaged by the operation of the rope running through the head unit while manual locking units will always have the locking cam engaged unless the user operates a string attached to the locking cam. Auto Locking units incorporate an overspeed function which will automatically lock off the unit in the case of an uncontrolled descent XX Manual locking, 8mm rope, 6:1 ma, with Rope Mate 87012XX Manual locking, 8mm rope, 6:1 ma, without Rope Mate 8702XXX Manual locking, 11mm rope, 4:1 ma 8704XXX, Auto locking, 11mm rope, 4:1 ma 8705XXX, Auto locking, 11mm, rope, 6: 1 ma The progress capture cams are designed with a tooth pattern that maximises grip with minimal effect to the rope and allows uphaul of a load while restricting lowering when engaged. Minimum breaking strength at Cam is determined at the point where the rope sheath is damaged with no distortion to the cam or head. Loads are still supported at this point as the damage is limited to the sheath and not the rope core where the majority of strength remains. Individual components (head, travelling pulley and rope) carry their own certifications and are tested as separate components outside of these kits. The Rollgliss RescueMate Haul Kits are certified as a complete system and as such carry separate markings for the kit as labelled on the tail end of the rope itself. Sewn terminations maximise strength and ensure that factory terminations and certifications are maintained. 4

3.0 NFPA STATEMENT Rollgliss Technical Rescue, RescueMate Haul Kits are identified as being compliant with NFPA 1983, and meet the Auxiliary Equipment requirements of NFPA 1983, Standard on Life Safety Rope and Equipment for Emergency Services, 2012 Edition. This Standard on Life Safety Rope and Equipment for Emergency Services, outlines requirements for Auxiliary Equipment. Certified NFPA 1983 (2012 edition) auxiliary equipment, Minimum Breaking Strength (MBS) and Maximum Load Limit (MLL) ratings are specified as per individual models. See markings on the device itself for details. All Rollgliss Technical Rescue Haul Kits covered by this document are rated G (General Use) as a complete unit, with the original rope supplied by the manufacture and terminated with the original connections whether sewn or otherwise attached. These instructions must be maintained, made available to the user and referenced by the user before and after each use. A copy of these instructions must be kept on record and users must be aware that if the instruction/information is not followed, the user could suffer serious injury as a consequence of incorrect use. THIS RESCUEMATE HAUL KIT HAS PASSED THE MINIMUM BREAKING STRENGTH AND HOLDING LOAD TEST USING THE FOLLOWING ROPES: CAPITAL SAFETY, STATIC KERNMANTLE, PART NUMBER , 11MM; CAPITAL SAFETY STATIC KERNMANTLE, PART NUMBER , 8MM. Additional information regarding auxiliary equipment can be found in NFPA 1500, Standard on Fire Department 10

Occupational Safety and Health Program, and NFPA 1983, Standard on Life Safety Rope and Equipment for Emergency Services. 4.0 STANDARDS COMPLIANCE Rollgliss Technical Rescue, RescueMate Haul Kits are manufactured in Australia, from combinations of aluminium and/or high grade stainless steel. Certified haul kits have been tested to and complies to American Rescue Standard NFPA 1983 (2012 ED.). All haul kits and individually certified components carry the SAI Global mark as proof of compliance. Equipment covered by this instruction manual conforms with the requirements of ANSI Z As per the requirements of this standard this instruction shall be provided to the rescuer. Classification under relevant standards is unique for each device certified and will be marked upon the device itself. Users of these devices should consider the local standards and legislation that may affect the systems installed such as AS/NZS , , OSHA , ANSI/ASSE Z359.1 and/or Z As a part of a confined space, fall arrest and/or positioning system Rollgliss RescueMate Haul Kits must be used in compliance with local anchor requirements. The following anchor strengths should be considered as a rescue or positioning system: OSHA (e) (2): Positioning, 13.3 kn (3,000 lb); 11

ANSI Z : Rescue, 13.8 kn (3,100 lb) or meet a factor of safety of 5:1; AS/NZS : Positioning (Industrial Rope Access) 12 kn (2,698 lb); Anchors should be positioned as directly as possible above the worker to reduce risks associated with swing fall where the worker may pendulum into an obstruction. Users must consult local legislation/standards. The use of a secondary fall arrest system is recommended when using Rollgliss Technical Rescue, RescueMate Haul Kits. Persons engaged in rescue operations that are exposed to a fall hazard must be provided an anchorage suitable for fall arrest in accordance with ANSI/ASSE Z Anchorage connectors shall not be attached to anchorages where such attachment would reduce the anchorage system strength below the applicable level or reduce the anchorage strength below the allowable level set by applicable structural codes. Anchorage connections shall be stabilized to prevent unwanted movement or disengagement of the rescue system from the anchorage. Verify system connections by pre-tensioning the system before applying the intended load. i.e. OSHA and : Anchorages used for attachment of Personal Fall Arrest Systems shall be independent of any anchorage being used to support or suspend platforms, and capable of supporting at least 5,000 lbs (22.2 kn) per user attached or be designed, installed 12

and used as part of a complete Personal Fall Arrest System which maintains a safety factor of at least 2 and is under the supervision of a qualified person. Rated capacity of Rollgliss Technical Rescue, RescueMate Haul Kits are determined through certification testing and design to a maximum two person load of 300 kg (660 lb). 5.0 CONNECTING THE HAUL KITS Rollgliss Technical Rescue, RescueMate Haul Kits are supplied roped, with connectors on either end of the mechanical advantage system. Normally used for raising or lowering, the head of the kit would be anchored to a secure anchorage as per the previous section, and the travelling end would be connected to the worker's harness or suspension platform/seat. Care and attention must be taken when making the connection both at the head of the unit and the travelling end that all connectors are properly closed and locked. Connecting the running end to your harness or work platform should ensure that the connection point is rated for suspension and provides a comfortable suspension of the worker in their harness. Capital Safety recommends the use of a secondary fall arrest system any time workers/rescuers or casualties are suspended. 6.0 OPERATING THE MANUAL LOCK HAUL KIT Rollgliss Technical Rescue, RescueMate Haul Kits are provided with an integral cam which provides a progress capture system when raising a worker or casualty 13

(Image 6.0.1). The Haul Kits operate either with a manual unlocking system or automatic unlocking system. The manual kits, part number series 8701XXX and 8702XXX utilise a cam which is always in contact with the rope unless the user manually operates the cam, holding it off the rope. The design of the cam and angle of the teeth allow the rope to run through past the cam without restriction when the hauling end of the rope is pulled through the head of the unit. This allows for unhindered raising and immediate progress capture. Image RAISING WITH THE MANUAL LOCK HAUL KIT To raise using the RescueMate Manual Haul Kits simply pull on the load line of the unit. The worker will be raised proportionally (depending upon the mechanical advantage of the Haul Kit) and the locking mechanism will ensure that the worker does not descend when the pressure is taken off the haul rope. Raising can continue until the running end of the unit is just below the head. Care should be taken not to collapse the Haul Kit by pulling too tight. This can damage the rope and make it very difficult to unlock the cam (Image 6.1.1). Image x x x 14

6.2 LOWERING WITH THE MANUAL LOCK HAUL KIT Image To lower using the RescueMate Manual Haul Kits the user must use the small cam cord that exits the side of the unit's head in conjunction with the load line (Image 6.2.1). Given the design and orientation on the teeth of the locking cam, when there is downward pressure on the system the teeth dig into the rope and hold the load in place (Image 6.2.2). Before the cam can be released this pressure must be removed. Image Lowering with the Manual Haul Kits requires the worker to remove the pressure on the cam by raising the load slightly. This will pull the rope through the locking cam releasing the pressure on the teeth (Image 6.2.3). The user will then lightly grip the cam release cord and pull it away from the unit, holding the cam away from the rope. This slight pressure must be maintained on the cam release cord to keep the cam's teeth away from the rope during the lowering exercise. With the cam open, the user will start to loosen their grip on the load line and allow the rope to slide through their hand, lowering the load. At any point the worker can stop the lower by either letting go of the cam release cord or by tightening their grip on the load line. Image

Care should be taken to control the lowering speed at all times with the brake hand (on the load line) when the cam is open. The Manual Lock Haul kit is not supplied with an overspeed brake and will continue to lower the load as long as the cam is held open. 7.0 OPERATING THE AUTOMATIC LOCK HAUL KIT As with the Manual Lock Haul Kits, Rollgliss Technical Rescue, RescueMate Automatic Haul Kits are provided with an integral cam which provides a progress capture system when raising a worker or casualty. The Automatic kits, part number series 8704XXX and 8705XXX utilise a engagement plate which will hold the locking cam off of the rope allowing for unhindered operation (Image 7.0.1). Image When raising, the design of the cam and angle of the teeth allow the rope to run past the cam without restriction as the hauling end of the rope is pulled through the head of the unit. This design feature in conjunction with the engagement plate allows for ease of operation and efficient progress capture. 7.1 RAISING WITH THE AUTOMATIC LOCK HAUL KIT To raise using the RescueMate Automatic Haul Kits simply pull on the load line of the unit. The worker will be raised proportionally (depending upon the mechanical advantage of the Haul Kit). When hauling, the engagement plate will rotate with the drum of the unit. Depending upon where the plate is in this rotation when pressure is taken off 16

the haul line, the cam may be held in the open position. Simply continue to raise the load a very short distance to unlock the cam and provide the progress capture. Users will immediately feel the rope either hold or move within the unit to know whether the cam is engaged or not. As with the Manual Kit, raising can continue until the running end of the unit is just below the head. Care should be taken not to collapse the Haul Kit by pulling too tight. This can damage the rope and make it very difficult to unlock the cam. 7.2 LOWERING WITH THE AUTOMATIC LOCK HAUL KIT To lower using the RescueMate Automatic Haul Kits the user will raise the load until they feel the engagement plate hold the cam open (Image 7.2.1). Image Closed Open With the engagement plate in the correct position and the cam open, the user will start to loosen their grip on the 17

load line and allow the rope to slide through their hand, lowering the load. At any point the user can stop the lower by tightening their grip on the load line. Care should be taken to control the lowering speed at all times with the brake hand (on the load line) when the cam is open. However, the Automatic Lock Haul kit is supplied with an overspeed brake that will engage when the system lowers too fast. Once activated, the engagement plate will release the cam and the load will be stopped. To continue lowering, the worker will raise the load so that the engagement plate will open the cam and continue to lower as before. WARNING: Always inspect your Haul Kit as per section 8.0 Inspection. A) Never use a Haul Kit which is damaged, warped or shows sign of excessive loading. B) Where cams and latches are damaged, sticking or functioning improperly the Haul Kit should be taken out of service. C) Never exceed the rated load limit as per this manual (section 3.0) and unit markings. G) Where there is concern regarding the condition of the Haul Kit, it must be withdrawn from service. Contact the manufacturer or its service agency for assistance. H) The use of the Haul Kit in a rescue or positioning system relies on the compatibility of the various components of the system. Users must be aware of how each component of the system works with other components to ensure safe operations. The Haul Kit is certified as a complete unit including rope, head and running pulleys. Only the manufacturer or their agent is authorised to service, reeve (roping) or repair the unit. 18

It is recommended that proper training is undertaken by the user to ensure that the Haul Kit is used correctly. Always ensure that the use of a device will not potentially overload the system. 8.0 INSPECTION Rollgliss Technical Rescue, RescueMate Haul Kits must be visually and manually inspected before and after each use to verify that the device is operating correctly. Any product which has been withdrawn from service must be inspected by a competent person and may only be returned to service if said competent person authorises in writing the use of that product. Where any product fails an inspection, has been used in a rescue or has seen the force of a fall, it is to be immediately taken out of service and tagged unusable. Such products must be certified by the manufacturer and/or their representative prior to re-instatement to service. Where the product is deemed unserviceable, the product shall be destroyed or made inoperable and securely disposed of. During the user inspection you must: Inspect the unit and all attached components for proper operation and any damage that may impair the proper operation of the unit. If any component of the system is missing or replaced with a non-factory supplied component, the Haul Kit is to be removed from service and returned to the manufacturer or their authorised agent for service. 19

All labels and markings must be present and legible. Inspect markings and labels on all components of the device including the unit head, pulleys and the tail end of the load line. Once the proper marking and labels are validated, continue inspection with the connecting means: Karabiner: Ensure hook is not bent, rusted/corroded or misshapen Ensure gate opens and automatically closes. Ensure hook is not gouged or nicked such that it may affect the strength of the attachment. Rope: Ensure no cuts, burns or damage to the rope material. Always ensure that no section of the core is visible through the rope's sheath. Head Unit: Inspect the outer surface of the head to ensure that there is no external damage, dents, rust or corrosion. Operate the device by pulling at least a metre (3.3 ft.) of rope through the device, ensuring that runs easily through the device without restriction. Reverse the operation by opening the cam and pulling the running pulleys extending the rope between the head and running pulley. Inspect the head unit sheaves for any nicks, corrosion or damage that may affect the rope running over them. Inspect the locking cam to ensure it operates as 20

required and that there is no damage to the teeth or springs which hold it in place. With the autolock devices, ensure that the engagement plate rotates while raising the unit and that it re-engages the cam as it rotates. Running Pulley: Ensure that the sheave rotates freely in the assembly; Ensure there is no dirt build up in the area of the sheave and pulley cheeks; Ensure there is no deformation of the pulley cheeks; Ensure there is no corrosion of the metal components; Inspect that there are no cracks or breaks in the body of the pulley. Any equipment failing to meet the requirements of the inspection criteria shall be appropriately tagged or labelled and removed from service. Equipment should then destroyed or returned to the manufacturer. 9.0 INSPECTION PERIOD Inspection frequency is dictated by local legislation/ standards and manufacturer recommendations.
