2 Progressing, sharing... Since our beginnings in caving, Petzl s mission has remained constant: to design practical tools that help people to operate in vertical and/or dark environments. After the invention of the first rope clamps by Fernand Petzl, the family business began to transpose caving tools to other vertical environments: first to alpine activities, with climbing and mountaineering, then to professional activities, with work at height and rescue in difficult locations. Each Petzl product is designed to meet a precise need found in the professional world. For workers, reliability and quality of equipment are essential. Petzl creates solutions that provide simple, solid tools that are meant for intensive use. These solutions consist not only of products, but also of an array of technical advice and information modules that are available through our communication resources and our distribution network. Part of this information is also available at By its very nature, progression has no limits: we are constantly inventing new solutions, and there is no reason for this to stop. 5 General principles for working at height VERTICALITY Warning Take the time to fully read and understand the information presented in this catalog, as well as the instructions for use that come with the products. Gaining an adequate apprenticeship is your own responsibility. The information presented in this catalog is is not guaranteed to be exhaustive, correct, understandable, or up-to-date. Petzl reserves the right to modify this information at any time. Contact Petzl if you have any doubt or difficulty in understanding the information presented in this catalog. Restraint Fall arrest This technique aims to keep the worker from entering a zone where there is a risk of falling (leash principle): lanyard + work positioning harness (the length of the lanyard is chosen to keep the worker away from a fall hazard area). The fall arrest system is designed to prevent the risks associated with a fall: - Striking an obstacle or the ground - Excessive impact force - Inert suspension: aggravates the person s condition Reduce the distance required to arrest the fall You must anticipate the required clearance. This clearance is the space required under the user so that he doesn t hit any obstacles during a fall (see diagram). Notes: than two meters are using: lanyard, energy absorber, mobile fall arrest device, reel... Absorb the energy of the fall in order to limit the impact transferred to the human body During a fall, the worker should never be subjected to a force greater than 6 kn. Two means are possible: the anchor points, above the head, so that the length of the fall and the force generated by the fall are minimized should be used. The most common PPE (personal protective equipment) with shock absorption are energy absorbers Information is non-exhaustive. Refer to the other pages as well as to the user instructions and technical manuals. Technical training is essential. 4 Maintain the victim in a position that limits the effects of inert suspension The fall arrest system is designed to minimize the effects of gravity on the human body during a fall (reduces the force of impact, avoids or reduces impact against an obstacle). Despite this, the consequences of a fall are often serious. Hanging immobile in a harness, regardless of the model used, can cause serious physiological harm. This is not the case when the hanging victim is conscious, as he is able to continually shift the pressure points of his harness by himself. In conclusion: Teams must be knowledgeable, trained and independent enough to rescue an unconscious worker or a worker incapable of self-rescue.

6 HARNESSES HELMETS LANYARDS AND ARRESTER CONNECTORS 0,35 m PULLEYS Work and rescue techniques Mastering the techniques To optimize safety and efficiency in work at height, great precision and excellent technique are required. These skills should be acquired through specific training and regular practice appropriate for each stage of the operation. Petzl recommends using a specialized training organization for all training activities. The examples on the following pages illustrate some of the practices used in the vertical world. Fall factor and clearance The fall factor is the relationship between the height of the fall and the length of the rope or lanyard available for absorbing the energy of the fall. It is calculated with the equation: Fall factor = Length of fall / length of rope or sling Clearance is the minimum distance required to prevent the user from striking the ground in case of a fall. The energy absorber limits the impact force on the user. With a significant impact, the user risks serious injury if he has no absorber. The system extends in order to absorb the energy of the fall. This elongation must be taken into account when calculating clearance. (Example of clearance calculation page 73). Work positioning This technique allows the worker to work while hanging in his equipment, hands free: (low-angle roof): work positioning harness and lanyard roof, roof unprotected by collective protection, steep slope, etc.): work positioning and fall arrest harness, work positioning lanyard, fall arrest system Fall factor 1 With energy absorber Without energy absorber 4 m minimum DESCENDERS Shock load < 6kN Shock load > 8-10kN ROPE CLAMPS Fall factor 2 With energy absorber Without energy absorber 4,35 m minimum 0,7 m ANCHORS AND ROPES Shock load < 6kN Shock load > 10-14kN 5 PACKS AND ACCESSORIES

7 Rope access and confined spaces Acroterre Vertige, Avoriaz (France) Pat Dion VERTICALITY Rope access This progression technique is used when there is no collective protection (railing, protective nets, etc.) or when overhanging structures or worksites do not allow for mobile platforms, outdoor scaffolding, etc. to be used. This is also the case for temporary operations where it is not practical to set up collective protection. The work area is accessed with ropes by operators specialized in rope access techniques. A site can be accessed from the top (safer and simpler to set up, this is the technique of choice), or from below (for example, a leader throws a rope up and around a fixed point, and then climbs up the rope, or he uses mountaineering progression techniques). Once the leader has installed all the progression and safety ropes, the other workers can safely climb up these ropes. Confined spaces Work done in confined spaces carries specific additional difficulties related primarily to the lack of space and to the lack of means of autonomous additional constraints: length of the intervention, air quality, temperature, etc. Since he cannot move about or ensure his own safety, someone working in this type of environment must have assistance. Confined spaces are generally accessed from the top. The worker s safety is ensured by a reversible hauling system, which is independent and reliable, allowing a quick evacuation in case of an accident. 6 A ALVEO BEST: lightweight helmet for work at height with strong chin strap to limit risk of the helmet coming off during a fall. 13 Tree care Champier, Menthon Saint Bernard (France) Marc Daviet VERTICALITY When it is not possible or appropriate to use an exterior means (elevating platform, ladder, etc.), the arborist uses a rope progression technique. To do this, he sets up a rope from the ground and installs an ascending system which is determined by the configuration and height of the tree. Once the arborist is in position, he must stay balanced and comfortable (harness with attachment bridge and adjustable lanyards). The work positioning system should always be backed up during a cutting operation. A ALVEO VENT / VIZIR: lightweight and ventilated helmet for work at height with system for mounting hearing protection and a face shield. B SEQUOIA SRT: arborist seat harness with ventral attachment point, allowing great mobility and comfort. C ASCENTREE: double-handled ergonomic rope clamp for tree access. 17 Energy and networks Altimum, Palézieux (Suisse) Fred Moix VERTICALITY The techniques used for moving around depend directly on the specifics of each structure and the presence/absence of collective protection. In its absence, team members must ensure their own safety with PPE (personal protective equipment). This is the case, for example, when working on an antenna or when setting up or taking down structures for events. To protect himself in the case of a fall, each worker must use a fall arrest system (for example: self-belay on the structure with an energy-absorbing lanyard or on a lifeline with a mobile fall arrester). If necessary, a positioning system is used to enable hands-free work. If the structure does have collective protection, a work positioning system (adjustable lanyard) may be sufficient. In special cases, workers may also need to use advanced techniques for progression (alpine technique for installing a safety line, hauling system for lifting a load, descending on a rope, etc.). 21 Framing and roofing VERTICALITY A safety device must be put in place before working on a roof for protection in case of slips or falls. The type of system is determined by the length of the operation. If the operation is long, it should be protected by collective protection in order to eliminate any risk of falling. If it is a short-term, temporary operation, individual protection is used. (PPE is necessary in either case for installing the collective protection if the building is not already equipped with it). In this situation, there is a great risk of falling. Each person must use a fall arrest system (for example, energy absorber with mobile fall arrester and safety rope). If collective protection is present and adequate for fall protection, a work positioning system with adjustable lanyard is the perfect solution. 25 General rescue principles VERTICALITY Hanging immobile in a harness, even for a short time, can cause serious physiological harm. In case of an accident, it is important to intervene quickly with the appropriate technique. Self-rescue: On sites where the main access could be cut off by fire, people must be ready to evacuate the building quickly. They have evacuation kits. These kits are either portable or installed permanently on the structure. Where there is no identified anchor possibility, these people can use a hook-based system. In both cases, teams are regularly trained so as not to panic in case of a fire. On-site rescue: When a worksite is being set up, the company must establish a risk prevention plan (inventory of risk situations): 1. It must protect the personnel from falls from height. The solutions, whether collective or individual, must protect the team members while they work. 2. In the case of an incident, the company must be prepared with rescue systems for accessing, releasing and evacuating the victim. These solutions are established with: - ready-to-use rescue kits, adaptable to many situations and simple to use - personal equipment for the worker at height (solution requiring experienced and precisely trained teams) In both cases, the teams undergo regular training in order to be able to intervene rapidly in case of an accident. Access the victim Accessing the victim can sometimes be complicated. Rope access techniques are used in such a case. When access is possible from above, rescuers use rope descent techniques. If an access rope is in place, rescuers can ascend the rope using handled ventral rope clamp techniques. In other situations, rescuers are obliged to use climbing techniques to reach the victim. Information is non-exhaustive. Refer to the other pages as well as to the user instructions and technical manuals. Technical training is essential. Technical rescue: Technical rescue teams must be able to intervene rapidly in any situation. They must quickly assess the situation and know all the techniques for progression and safety on a rope. - When access is difficult, these people must be able to intervene with their own equipment. They have light, versatile equipment - When access is easier or possible by motorized means, they use more specific equipment Ski lift evacuation: Operations evacuating ski lift users follow an evacuation plan. Rescue kits are put together to respond exactly to the needs of each ski centre. 24

26 PULLEYS HELMETS ROPE CLAMPS LANYARDS AND CONNECTORS HARNESSES Work and rescue techniques Release the victim Hauling This involves using a mechanical advantage pulley system in order to easily raise the victim. When the rescuer is alone, he will create such a system to conserve energy. The inconvenience is that a long rope is required. If there are enough rescuers, a lower mechanical advantage is used to hasten the operation. Balancier technique This is a counterweight system. The rescuer is on one side, the victim on the other. The rescuer unweights the rope on the victim s side by pulling on it. The victim ascends and the rescuer descends. The advantage of this system is that it is easy to do with little equipment. Engaging the counterweight is the step that demands the most energy. After that, it is important to be weight difference between the rescuer and the victim. Evacuate the victim Downward, the evacuation is carried out with a descender. This is the easiest technique currently in use. When evacuation downward is impossible, the victim is evacuated upward or horizontally. Upward, rescuers use either the counterweight or the hauling technique. Horizontally, several ropes are stretched taut. One rope is used for carriage, another is used as a back-up belay, and another to move the litter. 27 EXO self-evacuation New-York Fire Department, New York (USA) John Evans VERTICALITY Following a tragic accident in 2004, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) wanted to equip each firefighter with an individual system of protection, allowing emergency self-evacuation from a burning building. To do this, the FDNY conducted a very specific study of their needs. Over forty technical solutions were proposed and more than 5000 tests were carried out in their training centers. During this study, the FDNY approached Petzl to request the development of a device based on the GRIGRI (descender/belayer) and to fine-tune a new emergency evacuation technique. The EXO was the result of this association of experts and is now carried by all of New York s firefighters. This system allows each firefighter to quickly escape a burning building, with a high level of safety. EXO: personal escape system with anchor hook adapted for locations where the possibility of finding an anchor point is uncertain. This solution applies particularly to firefighter operations in a burning building (e.g. attachment to a window sill as a last resort). All equipment pages 40 to

29 On-site rescue Zenith Prévention, Crolles (France) Patrick Magnier VERTICALITY If a victim is not able to rescue himself, the on-site work team has to immediately intervene and move him to safety to wait for the outside rescue team to arrive. To be able to do this, the personnel should take a specialized course and train regularly. A rescuer will intervene with his own equipment or use a specific rescue kit, following the worksite s rescue plan. 33 Technical rescue VERTICALITY Technical rescue teams intervene in particularly difficult or dangerous situations. Intensively trained and taught, they operate in any environment where conventional rescue teams cannot intervene safely. These specialists master all the techniques for progression and belaying on ropes, including the more complex ones: evacuation downward, upward, or by Tyrolean traverse, etc. Downward evacuation Easier to install, this type of evacuation is favored whenever possible. Downward evacuation takes place using gravity, applying different techniques determined for specific types of terrain. Upward evacuation Upward evacuation requires techniques which are sometimes particularly complex (hauling with a mechanical winch, creating a hauling system built from lightweight pulleys, using counterweight techniques, etc.). Upward evacuation is a team effort and requires perfect coordination by everyone involved. Evacuation by Tyrolean traverse When evacuation of the victim is difficult (urban sites, industrial sites, confined spaces, canyons, etc.) or impossible due to the presence of an obstacle, victims can be evacuated via Tyrolean traverse. These complex systems can only be installed by rescue workers who have been specially trained to make suitable decisions about the choice of techniques (Tyrolean traverse set up with transport rope and back-up safety rope, «cable-car» system, special Tyrolean traverse for moving the victim in all directions while adapting to the terrain, etc.). 37 Ski lift evacuation Service des pistes, Les Arcs (France) Arnaud Childéric / Kalice VERTICALITY If ski lift equipment fails, the person in charge must evacuate passengers according to the evacuation plan. This document explains precisely how all the operations should be carried out and what human and material means must be employed. In most cases, these operations are carried out by the operating personnel. The maximum projected time allowed for evacuating all passengers is 3.5 hours (from breakdown to evacuation of the last passenger). This time can be reduced and adapted to the situation according to the weather, the type of installation, etc. In case of difficulty, the operator may call in organized rescue squads (mountain rescue, civil emergency services, etc.). Evacuation of a ski lift requires specific techniques for movement along a cable. For maximum efficiency, these operations are led simultaneously by several independent teams, generally composed of two people (one suspended on the cable for evacuation, the other on the ground to receive the passengers and to guide the movements of his colleague). The success of these operations hinges largely on the instruction, training and practice of the operating personnel (at least once a year). 43 HARNESSES VERTICALITY Petzl makes several types of harnesses to respond specifically to the different needs of workers at height. These products provide maximum efficiency and security for workers at height. They are simple to use, comfortable and technically adapted to the needs of the tasks for which they are designed. Petzl also suggests various accessories that allow supplementary functionality to be integrated into the harness, as well as rescue equipment. Comfort On harnesses for suspended work, comfort is assured by wide waistbelts and thicker foam in high pressure areas. The materials used (perforated foam, thermoformed supports, etc.) assure good ventilation, optimal light weight and excellent rigidity where required. Attachment points The ventral attachment point distributes the weight more evenly between the waistbelt and the leg loops during suspended work. The lateral points distribute the load on the waistbelt for suspended work with a supporting surface for the feet. The dorsal and sternal points on full body harnesses are used to connect fall arrest systems. Altimum, Palézieux (Suisse) Fred Moix Adjustments All Petzl harnesses have adjustable waistbelts, leg loops, and shoulder straps,as applicable. Each adjustment point is equipped with DoubleBack self-locking buckles. These do not require re-threading to be locked: the harness adjusts easily in seconds. To facilitate donning while keeping the feet on the ground, or with large shoes, certain harnesses also have FAST automatic buckles on the leg loops and waistbelt. Once adjusted, these buckles open and close easily and quickly - the harness can be put on without adjusting all the buckles. 42

61 Helmets VERTICALITY Differences in construction VERTEX and ALVEO helmets ensure protection against impacts, in compliance with EN 397 and EN European standards, as well as with the ANSI Z89.1 Type 1 North American standard. VERTEX helmets also protect against impacts in compliance with the CSA Z94.1 Type 1 standard. VERTEX helmets have a six-point webbing suspension system for maximum comfort on the head. Shock absorption achieved through deformation of the outer shell. The differences are found in the chinstrap and in the presence or lack of ventilation: - a strong chinstrap is suggested for work at height to limit the risk of losing the helmet during a fall (available in BEST and VENT versions, chinstrap conforms to the EN European standard) - a ventilated shell has the advantage of providing comfort when the temperature is elevated, but does not ensure protection against electrical risks and molten metal splash In the presence of either of these two risk factors, use a helmet with a non-ventilated shell. VERTEX and ALVEO nonventilated helmets comply with the requirements of European standards and the ANSI Z89.1 Type 1 Class E North American standard for electrical insulation. VERTEX BEST helmets ensure protection against electrical risks in compliance with the CSA Z94.1 Type 1 Class E standard. ALVEO helmets have an internal expanded polystyrene foam liner for reduced weight. Shock is absorbed by deformation of the expanded polystyrene liner. For all further information, go to or 60

67 LANYARDS VERTICALITY There are two main types of lanyards: - adjustable positioning lanyards for precise and comfortable positioning at a work station - lanyards with energy absorber designed to limit the impact transmitted to the user in case of a fall The range of Petzl lanyards also includes specialized lanyards adapted to specific uses, such as progression lanyards for difficult access, for use with the ASCENSION progression rope clamp, or energy absorbing lanyards, for use with the ASAP fall arrester. Sewn terminations Sewn terminations on rope lanyards give an increase in strength (compared to a knotted termination) while reducing bulk. Plastic sheaths and STRINGs hold the connectors in place. They also protect the ends of the lanyards from abrasion. 66 Altimum, Palézieux (Suisse) Fred Moix

The energy absorber, sized according to lanyard length, allows energy to be dissipated through the tearing of specific webbing or stitching. 69 Adjustable lanyards for work positioning VERTICALITY When the anchor is located above the user, the GRILLON lanyard is connected to the harness ventral attachment point, so that the load is comfortably distributed between the belt and leg loops. The user adjusts his position by operating the handle, while holding the free end of the lanyard. The GRILLON lanyard can be used in double mode (on the harness lateral attachment points) when the user must work with a supporting surface for the feet. This type of attachment gives better load distribution on the belt. The user precisely adjusts his position by pressing on the lanyard s pivoting cam. The GRILLON lanyard s rope protector allows good lateral mobility because the rope can slide through the protector. GRILLON Adjustable lanyard for work positioning positioning - double mode, on the harness lateral attachment points, to distribute the weight on the belt (user has weight on his feet): length is adjusted by pressing on the pivoting cam) - single mode on the harness ventral attachment point, to distribute weight between the waistbelt and the leg loops (user is suspended): length is adjusted by operating the handle while holding the free end of the lanyard abrasive contact and favors smooth rope glide. 75 MOBILE FALL ARRESTER VERTICALITY Installed on a lifeline, the ASAP mobile fall arrester follows the user automatically as he moves, whether on an inclined or vertical surface. In case of a shock or sudden acceleration, the ASAP mobile fall arrester s locking wheel will lock onto the rope and stop the fall. If necessary, the mobile fall arrester can be connected to an energy-absorbing lanyard when working farther from the lifeline. Under normal use, the ASAP mobile fall arrester s locking wheel rolls along the rope, whether it is vertical or angled, to follow the user in his movements. In case of a fall or excessive speed (slide, uncontrolled descent), the wheel will lock and stop the fall. The ASAP mobile fall arrester may be quickly and easily installed anywhere on the rope by retracting the locking wheel. 74 Pelisek & Sikora, Liberec (Czech Republic) Jan Kolar / Martin Turek

85 DESCENDERS VERTICALITY For both work-at-height and rescue, access from above is preferable because it allows one to take advantage of the force of gravity to save energy. Descenders are designed to help regulate friction and control the descent on a fixed rope. They allow a worker to position himself at any point on the rope. Some descenders can also be used to belay a leader using lead climbing techniques. 84 GRIMP Aywaille, Aywaille (Belgique) Stéphan Denys

91 ROPE CLAMPS VERTICALITY Rope clamps are primarily used for progression on ropes and for creating haul systems. Easy to use Rope clamps have to be easy and quick to use, for efficiency during progression, for passing intermediate anchors and for transitioning from ascending to descending. To do this, the rope is grabbed by a retractable spring-loaded cam. When the cam is locked in the open position, the rope channel is clear and thus facilitates the installation of the clamp onto the rope. Petzl s frame-loaded rope clamps are designed to function optimally under any conditions (wet, frozen, dirty ropes, for example). Therefore, they are equipped with a specific chrome-plated steel cam. Its unique design, the shape of its teeth and its self-cleaning slot allow optimal grip on the rope without damaging it, while reducing the effort required to slide the device up the rope. 90 Acroterre Vertige, Avoriaz (France) Pat Dion

97 PULLEYS VERTICALITY Pulleys are used to haul up equipment or raise a person in a rescue situation. Some pulleys have an integrated rope clamp to make certain tasks easier. Certain pulleys also allow for movement along a rope or cable: for moving loads or evacuating a person. Two factors determine a pulley s efficiency: Sheave size: the larger the sheave diameter, the higher the efficiency. Bushings and bearings: self-lubricating bushings are efficient, but they must be regularly maintained. Sealed ball bearings are very efficient, and they do not require any maintenance. For easier selection of the appropriate pulley for each need, all Petzl pulleys with ball-bearings are identified by a symbol. 96 GRIMP Aywaille, Aywaille (Belgique) Stéphan Denys The second symbol represents the maximum rope diameter to be used with each pulley.

123 Key points about lighting LIGHTING The following pages provide complementary information that is essential for a complete understanding of the technical aspects of headlamps. This information will help answer the most common questions, such as: - what are the main characteristics of a headlamp? - what are Petzl's requirements? - what equipment should be used in zones that present a risk of explosion? Beam uniformity A uniform light beam ensures maximum visual comfort for the user: lighting is uniform and has no bright point in the center, no spotting, no shaded zone. Quality of light source A perfectly uniform beam can not be obtained without a high-quality, rigorously designed light source and lens. Absence of bright center point A bright point in the center of the beam hampers vision, as it blinds the user and obliges him/her to orient the bright point precisely to the zone he/she wishes to see. A perfectly uniform beam eliminates these two flaws: it is not blinding and allows precise viewing of the lit zone. Absence of visual abnormalities A uniform beam provides lighting without spots, rings, or shaded zones. These irregularities prevent precise vision and may be disruptive during use, even causing loss of attention. Shape of the beam The choice of shape of the light beam on a headlamp depends directly on how it will be used. There are three main beam shapes. The wide beam It allows diffuse lighting ideal for close-range work. 122 The mixed beam It combines a wide part for proximity lighting and a focused part for distance lighting. The focused beam It concentrates the light to shine long distances and can be precisely aimed.

124 Technical lighting information Constant lighting level The main advantage of a constant lighting level is that it provides stable lighting performance over the burn time associated with each headlamp. This way, the user knows that neither the luminosity nor the lighting distance will decrease during this period. Distance (meters) t 0 12 h 60 h 120 h Lighting level Each headlamp provides a lighting level adapted to a specific use. The lighting level is related to the type of light beam: a headlamp designed for proximity lighting generally provides a wide beam with moderate light output. On the other hand, a headlamp adapted for long-range vision provides a focused beam associated with high light output. Lighting mode In most cases, headlamps have several lighting modes that allow the user to adapt the light quantity or the shape of the beam to the need. These lighting modes also allow the user to favor greater light output or longer burntime. To obtain constant lighting, headlamps are equipped with an electronic regulator that maintains luminosity and initial lighting distance, as long as the electric current delivered by the energy source is sufficient. When this source becomes too weak, the light output decreases to a minimum lighting level. This reserve lighting is nonetheless sufficient for finishing a task or for moving around, or to replace the batteries, for example. Constant lighting Headlamps not equipped with a regulation feature offer very bright light for only approximately 20 minutes. The light output then decreases progressively until the electric power source is depleted. 125 Petzl requirements LIGHTING To ensure excellent performance and quality for each product, all Petzl headlamps undergo different mechanical, electrical and optical simulations during their development. These tests adhere to rigorous protocol, with requirements that significantly surpass those imposed by the common standards. This particularly strict process ensures that each technical solution is inspected during use, and that the relevance of the product is checked. Beyond laboratory tests, the first prototypes undergo numerous field tests, allowing true-condition verification of the ergonomics, the comfort of use, and the reliability of the headlamp over time. The product will receive final approval only after many months of development and testing. Testing conditions Lighting performance and mechanical resistance tests are performed in the lab. These tests are first carried out at an ambient temperature of 20 C, and then at extreme temperatures between -30 C and +60 C. Petzl LEDs LEDs used by Petzl meet precise requirements established by the R&D Department. These same LEDs are then randomly tested before the headlamps are assembled, in order to verify the light color, the electrical consumption, the luminous flux, and the light output. Standards With its new lines of products, Petzl satisfies the ANSI/NEMA FL1 North American standard for measuring performance. Certain product lines also satisfy the requirements of the ATEX European standard and the HAZLOC North American standard for use in environments where there is risk of explosion. For more information, please consult 124

126 Performance Technical lighting information Lighting performance Luminous flux Burn time is measured on a testing platform equipped with a luxmeter. This device measures the brightness provided by the headlamp. The resulting burn time corresponds to useable lighting, i.e. the duration during which lighting remains stable. After that period, the user has reserve time that varies according to the model). Just after switching on, the lighting performance of the lamp decreases in a systematic way. Regulation technology allows performance to be stabilized over a given duration. To give the user realistic data, Petzl communicates only about stabilized or "useful working" values. Petzl measures luminous flux, lighting distance and burn time. Mechanical performance Strength The mechanical strength of headlamps is verified with fall, shock, and crushing tests. These tests are performed twice on the most fragile parts of the six faces of each product: lens, rotator dial, etc. They include: from a 40 cm height - crushing test: a mass of 80 kg rolls over the lamp The lighting power, or luminous flux is the total quantity of light emitted in every direction from a source of light. Luminous flux is expressed in lumens (lm). This value is measured in the lab with the help of an integrated sphere device. Lighting distance According to Petzl's protocol, lighting distance corresponds to the distance to which a headlamp Reliability Function tests verify the mechanical endurance of the moving parts of each product. Each function is tested with the help of a series of automatic tests in order to ensure their proper functioning and reliability over time: - selector dial - plate - battery pack A supplementary test subjects the headlamp to strong vibrations. distance of 2 meters (a minimum lighting level that corresponds to the light of a full moon). Also consult the "Constant lighting" section. Before being removed from the assembly line, all Petzl headlamps are inspected individually. These operations include a measurement of lighting performance carried out with a specific digital camera, and a test for water-tightness. Any product that does not satisfy these tests is permanently removed from the production line and sent to Petzl's R&D department for evaluation. An in-depth analysis is performed in order to establish technical solutions for correction. Ultra-compact headlamp Powerful headlamps Hybrid headlamps Compact, rugged headlamps 125

127 Environments and standards LIGHTING Explosive environments Oxygen in the air The ATEX regulation is a European directive which requires all heads of organizations to fully understand the risks related to certain explosive environments. To do this, an evaluation of the risk of explosion in a company is required in order to identify any locations where explosive environments could form, and then to put in place the means to avoid explosion. How do you choose equipment that is adapted for an environment ATEX environments are subdivided into three zones: - zones 0, 1 or 2 for gases - zones 20, 21 or 22 for dust Source of combustion (flame, spark, hot spot) Fuel (gas or flammable vapor, dust) There are two groups of materials: - Group I: concerns mines (more restrictive) - Group II: concerns all above-ground industries For Group II (above-ground industries), a specifically adapted category of equipment is associated with each ATEX zone classification: Zone classification equipment (for Group II, above-ground industry) There is a risk of explosion when several elements are present: - an oxidant: the oxygen in air, for example - a fuel:. gas or vapors: hydrocarbons, solvents, varnishes, dilutants, gas, alcohol, dyes, perfumes, chemical products, agents for manufacture of plastics, etc.. powders and dust: magnesium, aluminum, sulfur, cellulose, cereals, carbon, wood, milk, resins, sugars, starch, polystyrenes, fertilizer, etc. - a hot spot or a source of combustion For example, when filling a grain silo, the concentration of dust is very high. The environment then is dangerous: a rise in temperature, or even a spark, can trigger an explosion. If a risk of explosion is identified in an environment (gas or dust), a safety requirement is imposed for the use of equipment that is specifically designed to function without becoming a potential source of combustion. This equipment offers different types of protection designed to diminish the risk of explosion. Zone 0 (gas) Zone 20 (dust) PERMANENT RISK Category 1 VERY HIGH LEVEL OF PROTECTION The explosive mix is present constantly or for a long period of time Zone 1 (gas) Zone 21 (dust) FREQUENT RISK Category 2 HIGH LEVEL OF PROTECTION An explosive mix may form under normal working conditions Zone 2 (gas) Zone 22 (dust) OCCASIONAL RISK Category 3 NORMAL LEVEL OF PROTECTION An explosive mix has a small chance of forming and would exist only for a short period 126

128 Technical lighting information Products classified into different groups may have different modes of protection against explosion. These modes are designed for the zone in which the equipment is to be used. For example: zones 1/21, zones 2/22. headlamp, the less powerful the lighting will be. The intensity and voltage that is permitted may be low in order to ensure that the device does not produce an arc, spark or dangerous temperature. The ATEX standard also has a classification for explosive gases against which the user can protect himself by using a product that has adapted protection. For Group II materials, the danger of gases covered by a product grows from subdivision IIA, the least dangerous, to subdivision IIC, the most dangerous. Some reference gases: - group I: methane - group IIA: propane - group IIB: ethylene - group IIC: hydrogen/acetylene For more information, please consult Temperature classes for gases and dust The exterior of a headlamp for use in hazardous locations must not present an external surface temperature that could provoke combustion. Different substances may combust at different temperatures. The lower the combustion temperature is, the more dangerous the substance is. Therefore, each piece of equipment used in an explosive environment is classified according to the maximal surface temperature it generates. There are six classes of temperatures, from T1 to T6. For more information, please consult All products designed for use in explosive zones have a specific marking on them. This marking contains all the information necessary to determine the zones in which the product may be used. CE CE: The equipment meets European standards for this product : Identification number of the notified body, when it intervenes in the inspection phase of production Here the number corresponds to the LCIE Bureau Véritas. This number may also be 0080, for example for INERIS. - : Use authorized for explosive environments - : Equipment group (I = mines, II = surface industries) - 2: Category of equipment (1 = permanent risk (Zones 0 and 20), 2 = frequent risk (Zones 1 and 21), 3 = occasional risk (Zones 2 and 22)) - : Type of fuel source: D = dust, G = gases and vapors - Ex: The product meets the Cenelec protection standards - nanl: type of protection - : Indicates the class of gases covered by the product - T4: Temperature class corresponding to a surface temperature Ultra-compact headlamp Powerful headlamps Hybrid headlamps Compact, rugged headlamps 127

129 Environments and standards LIGHTING The HAZLOC certification primarily concerns North America. It aims to control the risks related to explosion in certain environments. It comprises two elements: - testing and evaluation of products being used - inspection of the factory How do you choose equipment that is adapted for an environment at Hazardous locations are classified in three ways under the HAZLOC standard: - by type - by conditions - by nature of the hazardous substance or material Hazardous environments are divided into three classes: - designates a space that has become dangerous because of the possible presence of certain gases or vapors in sufficient quantity to be potentially flammable or explosive. Examples: petroleum refineries, gas distribution zones, spray finishing zones, etc. - designates a space that has become dangerous because of the presence of flammable air-borne dust. Examples: grain silos, manufacturers of plastics, aluminum, pharmaceutical products and fireworks, etc. - designates a space in which airborne fibers and particles can accumulate around a machine or on lighting equipment and become ignited by heat, a spark or a hot metal. Examples: textile factories, flax processing plants, factories that produce wood shavings or flying particles, etc. There are two types of conditions: - Division 1 (average conditions): the risk is present during regular production operations, or during ongoing repair or maintenance operations. - Division 2 (unusual conditions): the dangerous substance is only present in the case of an accidental break or defective functioning. The gases and vapors of Class I hazardous environments are divided into four groups: A, B, C and D (these substances are grouped according to their combustion temperature, their explosion pressure and other combustion characteristics). The dangerous substances of Class II hazardous environments are divided into three groups: E, F and G (these substances are grouped according to their combustion temperature and their conductivity). Conductivity relates particularly to metal dusts. Classes Groups Divisions 1 2 I Gases, vapors, liquids II Dust III Air-borne fibers and particles A: Acetylene B: Hydrogen, etc. C: Ether, etc. D: Hydrocarbons, fuels, solvents, etc. E: Metal dusts (conductive and explosive) F: Carbon dusts (some are conductive and all are explosive) G: Flour, starch, grain, combustible plastic or chemical dusts (explosive) Textiles, wood debris, etc. Explosive and always dangerous The quantity of dust is sufficient to be flammable, or the dust is conductive under normal conditions. Manipulated or used during manufacture Normally not present in quantities sufficient for explosion (but this situation may accidentally arise) Normally not present in quantities sufficient for explosion (but this situation may accidentally arise) Stored or manipulated in a storage area (away from manufacturing) The more restrictive the mode of protection of a headlamp is, the less powerful the lighting will be. The intensity and voltage that is permitted may be low in order to ensure that the device does not produce an arc, spark or dangerous temperature. All products designed for use in explosive zones have a specific marking on them. This marking contains all the information necessary to determine the zones in which the product may be used. Example of marking: - the marking: FLASHLIGHT FOR USE IN HAZ. LOC. - marking details: CLASS I, DIV. 2 GROUPS C, D, CLASS II, DIV. 2 GROUP G Class I: gaseous environment: - Class I= gas - Class II = dust - Class III = fibers Div 2 = type of conditions: - Div 1: present under normal conditions - Div 2: present under abnormal conditions GROUPS C & D: corresponds to the classes of gas covered by the product Class II: dusty environment Div 2: present under abnormal conditions GROUP G: corresponds to the classes of dust covered by the product For more information, please consult 128

130 Protection against solid objects and liquids Technical lighting information X = Not measured 0 = Not protected 4 = Protected against solids 1 mm in diameter deposits) 6 = Completely protected against dust Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) The electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) describes the ability of an electric device to work properly, independent of possible electromagnetic disturbances in the environment, and without producing its own. All Petzl headlamps conform to the requirements of the 89/366/CEE directive concerning electromagnetic compatibility: they will not interfere with any other CE-marked devices. The The IP Protection Index is an international standard. This index classifies the level of protection offered by equipment against intrusions by solids (e.g. dust) and liquids (e.g. water, oil). Example: IP 67 The first number indicates protection against solid objects. The second number indicates protection against liquids. The IP 67 notation therefore corresponds to a completely dustproof product that is protected against the effects of immersion in liquid. Note: When a criterion has not been tested, the number is replaced by "X" (e.g., IP X6 indicates that the product has not been tested for solids). X = Not measured 0 = Not protected 1 = Protected against vertically falling water drops 3 = Protected against rain (60 from vertical) 4 = Protected against sprayed water 6 = Protected against forceful hose-projected water 7 = Temporary immersion (-1 meter for 30 minutes) 8 = Prolonged immersion (deeper than 1 meter for period defined by manufacturer) Ultra-compact headlamp Powerful headlamps Hybrid headlamps Compact, rugged headlamps 129
