3 Generic Fall Protection Course objectives: Terminal Objective: Upon completion of this training, students will be able to recognize fall hazards and the actions to be followed to minimize these hazards. Enabling Objectives: 1) Define the following terms and understand their importance: Anchorage Body Harness Connector Dangerous Equipment Excavations Floor Opening Free Fall Guardrail system Hole Lanyard Leading Edge Personal Fall Arrest System Unprotected sides and edges Wall Opening 2) Describe the nature of fall hazards in the work area. 3) Describe the correct application, use and limitations of personal fall arrest systems. 4) Describe the use of fall arrest systems with vertical lifelines. 5) State the restrictions for self retracting lifelines and lanyards. 6) Describe the requirements for components of a personal fall arrest system. 7) State the requirements for using fall arrest systems with horizontal lifelines. 8) Describe the requirements for inspection of fall arrest systems prior to use. 9) List the requirements for Guardrail systems to include: Page 3 of 71
4 The construction and strength requirements for Top and Mid rails The requirements to prevent materials falling through the guardrail openings The requirements for using guardrails around holes 10) Describe the methods of protection from falling objects. 11) State the purpose and use of a Positioning Device System. Target Audience: Personnel who might be exposed to fall hazards must be aware of the associated hazards and the requirements for use of fall protection. This generic course is intended for power plant workers who may be required to work at heights (generally defined as 6 feet or more). This course addresses generic information and does not include site specific topics such as: Requirements for individuals who design or install fall protection systems Fall Protection Plans when use of fall protection is not feasible Warning Line Systems Safety Net Systems Controlled Access Zones Practical demonstration for using or wearing fall protection equipment Site Procedures for fall protection which may be more restrictive than discussed in this course If the student has questions about site specific fall protection procedures or requirements they should contact their supervisor or the site industrial safety department.
