Steel Wire Ropes The Company is Authorised trader for Usha Martin Make Steel Wire Ropes. Tabulating in a nutshell the breaking loads of steel wire rope across various constructions of ropes. Wire rope is a machine with dozens even hundreds of individual wires which are formed and fabricated to move or operate at close tolerances to one another. When a wire rope bends, each of its many wires slides and adjusts to accommodate the differences in length between the inside and outside of the bend. The sharper the bend, the greater the movement. Every wire has three basic components: the wires, strands and core. The core may be either fiber (FC) such as sisal, manila or jute, or an Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC), which is actually a smaller wire rope within the strands of the outer wire rope. The wires are predominantly constructed from high-carbon steel, but may also be formed from various metals such as iron, stainless steel, monel or bronze. 8 Basic sling hitches and their effect on working load limits This illustration shows the basic sling hitches. It also shows capacities for a single sample sling, rigged with each hitch. The sample sling's Working Load Limit in a vertical hitch is 500 kgs. This sling has a Working Load Limit of 500 kgs in a vertical hitch. Used in a choker hitch, it would have a capacity of 375 kgs Used in a basket hitch with the legs at a 90 angle to the load, it would have a working load limit of 1,000 kgs Used in a basket hitch with the legs at a 60 angle to the load, it would have a working load limit of 866 kgs, etc. - Why? The angle at which a sling is used, and the number of legs lifting the load can significantly effect its capacity. Vertical - When a sling is used in a vertical hitch, the full lifting capacity of Basket Hitch (90 ) - The cradle configuration of this hitch allows the two the sling material can be utilized extending ends (legs) of the sling to function as if they were two separate Slings. The capacity of the sling in this hitch is twice that of the same sling in a vertical hitch, but only if the sling angle of each leg is 90. Lifting with both legs at 90 would normally require two lifting devices or a spreader bar Choker - Due to the stress created at the choke point, slings rigged with this Basket Hitch (less than 90 ) - When slings or sling legs are used at an hitch achieve only about 75% of their potential capacity. angle during a lift, the sling capacity is reduced. How much it is reduced Always pull a choker hitch tight before a lift is made - never during the lift depends on the sling angle. Note that the rated capacity of a 30 Basket is only one half that of a 90 Basket. Sling angles below 30 are strongly discouraged. A sling angle of 60 or more is preferred Page: 8

Technical About Ropes Storage Handling The Right Way Must be stored in a well ventilated shed Free From moisture, dust and fumes Suitable lubricant to applied every 3 months to the outer layers Reel containing ropes to be rolled through 90 degree after every 3 months Protect wooden reels from the attack of termites In no case the reels should be put on ground or uncemented floor Use spindle through the reels for loading / unloading or put the rope on a swift with brake management Allow clearance for free toration of reel when the rope end is pulled Maintain constant tension during haul off. Prevent crossing of rope laps on the reel Avoid possible kink, which is a permanent damage to a rope Page: 38

Discard Criteria Of Steel Wire Rope Like any other machine, steel wire rope also deteriorate during storage as well as service. The deterioration and thus the life of the rope depends on many factors, in addition to quality of rope, like storage, handling, operation, service conditions, maintenance etc etc. It is, therefore difficult to predict the life of a rope. However, generally accepted criteria for discarding steel wire ropes are appended below: 1. When the outer wires have become definitely loose or have lost about 40% depth for multilayer construction like 6x19, 6x36 etc. One method to determine this stage could be to measure the reduction in diameter of the portion of rope which is subjected to abrasion and stressess with respect to that portion of rope which is subjected to stressess but not abrasion, e.g drum lead, acnhor lead etc. This reduction in diameter of rope should not exceed about 5-6% in case of multi-layer construction. 2. When the rope has been subjected to severe over load or shock load. 3. When the total number of visible broken wires exceed 10% of tolta number of wires in the rope, at any place, in a length equivalent to eight diameter of rope. It is IMPORTANT to net that this condition applies only to the cases where the breakages of wires are more or less evenly distributed to all the strands and NOT when the breakages are more concentrated in some strands only of the rope. 4. When there is evidence of considerable wear of surface embrittlement. 5. When there is evidence of sever corrosion like chain pitting. The condition may be alarming if in addition to corrosion, fatigue is present. Fatigue, in conjuction with corrosion, may affect the safety of the rope even at relatively early stages of corrosion. Thus, a less used rope would be less affected as compared to rope which has been in use longer, for the same extent of corrosion. 6. When the rope has been subjected to localised distortion, damage or kink which disturbs the balance between various strands of the rope and various wires in any strand. 7. When the diameter of the rope has suddenly decreased or the length of lay has suddenly increased or decreased. A decrease in lay length is usually associated with waviness in the rope. Page: 39

8. When the core has collapsed. It is important to distinguish between waviness and collapsing of core. In case of waviness there will remain similarity between the measurements of a diameters at perpendicular sections and the deformity will be over a length of rope whereas in case the core has collapsed the strands will tend to flatten out and deformation may be localised. A wavy rope may not necessitate its withdrawal from service immediately but a rope with collapsed core will not be safe. 9. When it is found that one or more strands have broken. 10. When a bird cage is formed. A general guideline has been formulated as above. But the discretion of the Inspecting officer, who has the expertise should have the final say in judging and ascertaining the safe conditions of the rope based on his earlier experiences on the particular installation. Obviously when the inspection of rope leaves any doubt in the mind of Inspecting officer as to its safety, due to development of deterioration, the rope should be changed Photograph Type of Typical Failures Photograph Type of Typical Failures Fatigue Failure Abrasion Birdcage Thermal Damage Shock Loading Corrosion Page: 40

Discard a wire rope sling Ten randomly distributed broken wires exist in one rope lay or five broken wires in one strand, in one rope lay There is wear or scraping of 1/3 rd of the original diameter of outside individual wires. It is subjected to localized distortion, damage, kinking, crushing or bird-caging which disturbs the balance between various strands of the rope and various wires in any strand Evidence of heat damage is present Rope end attachments are cracked, deformed or worn. Page: 41

Discard Webbing Slings A specific procedure for the inspection of synthetic slings is your best safeguard against sling damage and abuse. Initial Inspection Periodic This inspection is done at the time the product is first received to The periodic level of inspection is done by designated personnel at ensure that damage has not occurred during shipment. Also verify regular intervals. The interval is based upon the frequency of use, that the goods are in compliance with the specification of the severity of service conditions, and information derived through the purchase order. inspection process. Recommendations to prevent damage must be evaluated to improve the service life of the replacement slings. Frequent Inspection Written records must be kept. This level of visual inspection should be done by the person handling the sling, or other specifically designated personnel. Records are not required. a) Normal service daily when in use b) Severe service each use c) Special or infrequent service as recommended by a qualified person before and after each use. Abrasion Damage Acid Damage Heat Damage Puncture Cuts Face Cuts Tensile Break Illegal or Missing Tag Page: 42
