5 ANATOMY OF A HARNESS Fall Arrest Attachment Point: D-ring (large or small) or loop between shoulder blades for fall arrest. 2. D-Ring Extender: 18 D-ring or loop extension attached to the back D-ring of the harness. Makes access to D-ring for lanyard attachment easier allowing user to check for 100% snap hook gate closure. 3. Shoulder D-rings: Small D-rings at the top of the shoulder Used with a spreader bar or yoke (Y) lanyard for retrieval and rescue in confined space situations. 4. Chest Strap: Webbing which connects the two shoulder straps together. Connected with a pass-through buckle to keep user in the harness. 5. Leg Connectors: Available in both pass-through or grommeted versions. Allows the user choice in leg closure suited to the application or worker preference. 6. Comfort Pad: Soft and firm lumbar support providing support to lower back in work positioning applications. 7. Body Belt: Integrated body belt. Excellent support for work positioning and for tool storage. 8. Sub-Pelvic Strap: Webbing strap located just below the buttocks provides comfort in positioning applications and help distributes forces in event of a fall. 9. Side D-rings: D-rings located at the hip or just above the hip. Side D-rings are used for work positioning or restraint applications. 10. Front D-ring: D-ring or loop usually on a cross-chest harness. Versatile position can be used for descent, ladder climbing and rescue application. 11. Up Arrow Indicator: Arrows indicating the fall arrest attachment point of the harness. Up arrows indicate the proper orientation of the harness. 12. Sternal Loops: Reinforced web loops for use in rescue and descent applications. 3

6 HARNESS WEBBING & CLASSIFICATIONS WEBBING Synthetic webbing is used for harness construction due to its economy, strength and overall consistency when compared to traditional materials. Nylon: Polyamide (nylon) is a strong, cost effective synthetic suited to most fall arrest applications due to its strength to weight ratio, good abrasion resistance and resistance to alkalis. Polyester: Polyester has similar strength properties to polyamide in addition to superior chemical resistance and better resistance to UV rays. Kevlar /Nomex blend: This blend has similar strength properties to polyamide and polyester with added resistance to heat, flame and sparks. Nomex provides a flame-retardant jacket surrounding the core of Kevlar fiber which provides the strength in this webbing. Kevlar and Nomex are registered trade marks of the E.I. Dupont Co. 28 RUNGMASTER LADDER SAFETY SYSTEM 26

29 RUNGMASTER SYSTEM The RungMaster is a cost effective way to protect your workers when they are climbing fixed ladders. All RungMaster components are made from galvanized steel for maintenance-free operation. The system comes complete with an energy absorber; which is built into the top bracket. The energy absorber will deploy at 900lbs (4kN), keeping the ladder from being damaged in the event of a fall. The RungMaster system comes with all the equipment necessary to install the system on any continuous straight fixed ladder system. All RungMaster Safety Systems are engineered to meet or exceed applicable CSA, ANSI and OHSA requirements. Installation of your RungMaster kit requires no special tools and can be installed in minutes. Simply start at the top of your ladder and work your way down. Follow the instruction manual for positioning of intermediate brackets. Once all the components are installed, simply tension the system using the turnbuckle and cut the excess cable off (if necessary). It s that simple! TO ORDER A RUNGMASTER SYSTEM: 1. Choose the type of top bracket; regular bracket use FP6000/XX and for ladders extended above the platform use the extended bracket FP6001/XX 2. Obtain the height of the ladder 3. Select the kit based on the length of the ladder (i.e. 50 (15 m) ladder requires a FP6000/50 kit) 4. If your ladder is between sizes, then select the next longer length of kit to ensure you have enough cable 5. 31 ANCHORAGE CONNECTORS, TRIPODS & DAVITS FP6600 SERIES TRIPODS The North FP6600 Tripod is engineered with the user in mind. The aluminum legs are made of square tubing for added lightness and required strength. The cast alloy head has an integrated pulley system allowing a cable from a device to pass through the center of the head. This eliminates costly pulleys and allows one of the 2 eyebolts in the head to be used as a tie-off point for the topside worker. Another advantage of the FP6600 Tripod is that retractable devices are located on the outside of the working area and not beneath the tripod. This allows a narrower profile and that means the tripod can fit into tighter spaces. North's all-aluminum construction sacrifices nothing to the safety and security of its users. All are rated for one person at 140kg. or 310lbs and meet applicable ANSI and OSHA requirements.
