5 From the President BOB DEWSTOW President INTRODUCTION This is the last report I shall be writing as the President of the St Ives Cricket Club. It has been a pleasure and at times a burden looking to represent the cricketers of our club over the past 10 odd years. But it is one I have for the most part enjoyed. I have always enjoyed getting out on the park on a Saturday afternoon and experiencing the togetherness of the team and the desire to achieve (and that does not necessarily mean win). This year has been one of mixed blessings with us only able to field six Saturday teams, and one Sunday, which is basically the minimum number needed to provide teams at all levels and make the club sustainable. However, from those 6 teams we managed to get 3 into semi finals and one; B2 s took out the premiership. Thus there can be no complaints about the quality of the cricket we play. THE CRICKET All of our teams had outstanding performances through the season. This culminated in A Grade; B2 s and D2 s making it through to the semi s. C2 s missed by a whisker (actually it was losing the last game that really counted). B1 s were close and D1 s effectively didn t make the semi s by a quotient of.301 how did we miss?. May I applaud all the people who turned out through the season for the various teams it is with great gratitude I acknowledge your contribution. In the case of C2 s; 2 absolutely useless Kiwis who made up numbers when we were short and Lauren, my daughter who pulled on a set of whites to give us numbers when all looked gloom and doom. In our case it still came down to the last game as to whether we made the semi s or not. This is not a commentary on their skills but rather an acknowledgment that they helped us get that close. I have only chosen the C2 s because that is the team I was most familiar with however, I know it was happening across every team. It is noticeable that the most effective teams are those which have a core who turn out week in and week out ; to these people (and you know who you are) I extend my warmest thanks because without you folk it would be so much more difficult getting teams on the park. I am not going to dwell on the individual successes of the teams or their members that is something for the team reports. However, I am going to acknowledge that I am gladdened by the renewed enthusiasm for the club and its future. Long may it continue. THE COMMITTEE In terms of the administration of the Club this is a function which is carried out by your elected representatives and those, the Executive co-opt, to assist them. Over the past 2 years it has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with Bob Gussey (BG) who has provided us with a degree of guidance. His support as a Consultant to the Executive of the Club was and will continue to be invaluable. His performance will be recognized by the club and it is without doubt warranted. Judy Gussey has also been a backbone of the club being our Registrar and making sure that we hold the necessary meetings. Her contribution makes her a true champion of the club. In dealing with these folk they are associates of the club and provide their time 5 ST IVES CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT

6 Report Continued BOB DEWSTOW President because they want to. I would truly like to see BG out on the field one day so that he will then have the experience of being one of those who have taken the field - perhaps one of the 20/20 games? I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the rest of my Executive Jeremy Chenu who as Secretary took on a challenging role (we hadn t really had one for some time) and stepped up to the mark and took it on as if he had been doing it his whole life. To Rod Grosvenor as Treasurer who has offered again and again his services to the club. Others on the Committee are Gavin Wingfield, Ben Gussey, Phil Bromley, Alex Langley and a special mentioned to Mark Wallace who ran the bar this season, he is a real stalwart of the club and his contribution needs to be acknowledged. As well Dave Drake, committee member and leader of the fearless B2 side needs to be applauded along with his better half Hilda who has provided unstinting service to the functions the club put on. THE FINANCES The Club has made a small profit over the past year due mainly to us not spending on uniforms. We have made a further reduction in the loan from the Rugby Club in respect of the Clubhouse ($3000) and we have agreed a formula for the calculation of future expenditure. The club however, does rely on the fees and fundraising for its continued survival. The more people the easier it is. As part of the funding of our cricket we are particularly grateful to St Ives Shopping Village for their sponsorship over the last few years and look forward to our new relationship with TRIFORCE SPORT AUSTRALIA and continue to encourage use of their wonderful facilities. In addition we appreciate the printing services provided by Law in Order. THE CLUBHOUSE We appreciate and recognise the quality of our relationship with the Rugby Club in the use of the Hassell Park Clubhouse. This season we have put clarity around our continued occupation of the Clubhouse and our relationship with the Rugby Club. The clarity will assist us moving forward. HK&HDCA This organisation has been a bone of contention with me for the past 3 years. It needs to have more focus on the interests of its constituent bodies as its driving focus. It is now time for a different set of eyes to look at how we engage with this body good luck. CONCLUSION I am aware that Gavin Wingfield has been nominated for President for next year he unreservedly gets my endorsement. I trust I have left the club in a state that can be built from. I am aware there are many challenges here. As a club I believe we have good heart and it is finding the next building block. Through Gavin I believe we have a greater prospect of engaging with those that are going to be the future of cricket in the St Ives / Ku ring gai area. I have enjoyed my time but it is really time to pass the baton and I believe it going into the right hands. GO THE SAINTS. BOB DEWSTOW PRESIDENT 6 ST IVES CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT

15 A Grade Report 2010/11 produced another good year for A grade, making the semi-finals for the second consecutive year. 2010/11 produced another good year for A grade, making the semifinals for the second consecutive year. Unfortunately, the season would ultimately end the same as last year, with a semi-final loss at Berowra Oval. The season started extremely positively, defeating ARL in round 2, which marked their first loss in nearly two years. Going into day two with a healthy lead in the match having ARL 7/38 chasing our 169, we were finally able to roll them when leading wicket taker for the year Dave DA Akins dismissed their best player Ben Folkard to have them all out for 158, after some anxious moments. The win was made even better when we were able to knock off long time rivals and last years other finalist, WPHC, to sit on top of the ladder after 3 rounds. The season went on to produce some mixed results, going down to teams we should have beaten, while still matching it with the teams on top of the ladder. It did however produce a few highlights. A swashbuckling 83 from MVP for the year Alex Langley in round 5 that was deserving of a century, A five wicket haul to spin sensation Nevin Nath in the semi-final that nearly saw us take the game and consistent performances from David Akins and both Graeme and Andrew Terry all year round, which helped us make it to the semi s. Along with strong individual performances, the team was able to gel well throughout the year, with the core of the team consisting of Alex Langley, Andrew Terry, Graeme Terry, Nevin Nath, Daniel Weeks, Rowan Pryor, Stephen Karrasch, Gareth Horne and Chris Brown playing most games. We hope that with these players along with some new players putting their hand up from the lower grades, we may be able to take the extra steps next season to go all the way and take the title away from ARL! 17 B Grade Report The St Ives B-Grade side had an up-and-down and eventually somewhat disappointing season for 2010/2011 The St Ives B-Grade side had an up-and-down and eventually somewhat disappointing season for 2010/2011. In a curious turnaround from last season, batting proved to be our downfall in most matches, whilst the fielding and bowling saw us restrict our opponents in half our fixtures to under 150 runs. A season with no centuries from a team that had multiple centurions the previous season was always going to put pressure on ourselves. The season started out with a loss to Berowra at Foxglove, but we quickly put that right with two solid wins against Castle Hill and West Penno (knocking the 2009/2010 B2 Premiers over for 116). Worrying signs for our batting for our batting appeared in game 3 against Mount Colah, where after a great allround bowling performance and removing the opposition for only 113 runs, we folded under very little pressure to be all-out for 106 with only 3 batsmen in double figures. A further loss to Kissing Point in the next round St Ives was all out for 148 featuring 4 ducks chasing 273 was turned around again with a win against Hornsby District. St Ives made a modest total of 170 in our 40 overs before putting on a great bowling and fielding display to have the opposition all out for 129 in just over 35 overs in a dominant show of what we could achieve if we focused on the task at hand. In Round 7, St Ives again turned in a strong performance rolling the Sydney Lions for 70 runs in a completely lop-sided affair, before going into the Christmas break near the top of the table after thumping Berowra the eventual Premiers again defending a moderate total of 160 runs by bowling out the opposition for 131 with spin/pace/medium/whoknows sensation Peter Park taking 5-22 in 7 overs. James Rushton was a welcome return to the club taking 2-11 in 5 overs and then smashing the Berowra attack to all parts in an innings of 64 at the same time getting himself instantly graded back up to A-Grade for the rest of the season! In the New Year, we were greeted by the news that the HKHDCA had put Peter Park on restrictions due to his bowling figures he was limited to 6 overs taking one of our secret weapons out of the arsenal. The limitation was felt in the first game against Castle Hill where St Ives couldn t take the wickets required to prevent the opposition passing our total of 188 on the pasturage that passes for the field at Gilroy College. We didn t win another game the rest of the season, despite putting ourselves in winning positions against West Penno, Kissing Point and Sydney Lions. St Ives missed the semi-finals which was extremely disappointing given how well the team had played in the 2010 part of the season. It was not all doom and gloom, however, with Ben Gussey and Mark Wallace both registering multiple 50s (3 for Gus and 2 for Wally) both deserved centuries but had to settle for top scores of 90 and 75 respectively. Ben also contributed with the ball in the latter part of the season taking 5-10 in 8 overs in what should have been a match-winning performance, whilst Peter Park and Nic Smith also to 5-fors during the season. Team selection consistency was definitely an issue with the team being left short of players in a couple of games due to commitments to A-Grade or being unavailable through injury only 5 players played more than 10 of the 14 rounds. Steve Martin also proved to be an excellent Captain during the 3 games that I was away. Despite the last half of the season, I believe that we have built a core of players that will be able to challenge more strongly for Premiership honours in 2011/2012, whilst still providing A-Grade with players that can hold their hand up at the higher grade should the need arise. With more commitment to the training sessions, I am positive that St Ives B-Grade will be a serious contender for the title around March next year. 19 B-Reserve Grade Report Having a staggering 41 players come into my team this season we managed to pull of the most amazing premiership win I can remember. Well this will be a very pleasant report to write this year. Having a staggering 41 players come into my team this season (I am sure this is a St Ives record) we managed to pull of the most amazing premiership win I can remember. There were many highlights and low lights during the year. Highlights included the bowling of Ravi de Silva ( ) and Robbie Cleland (26 wickets at 15.15). And the batting consistency of Will Enos (although in one innings he was dropped about 4 times in the slips v Kenthurst). However, we seem to be able to gel at the right place and the right time. Low lights included being all out for 23 v Hornsby when Jimmy Lander was injured the week before and as usual someone didn t turn up In addition, the fracturing of Ken Honeysett s finger (our wicket keeper) prior to the semis was a major loss. But everything seemed to fall in place somehow the game before the semis. Against Normanhurst we scored a credible 190 only to see Normanhurst overhaul our total one wicket down. This is when we thought there was no way we would make the semis with West Pennant Hills only needing a win over Kenthurst. Chasing 130 odd and at the end of day one 1 for 30. Well the gods smiled on the Saints and West Pennant Hills were bowled over for 100. The semis beckoned! We played our semi way out at Galston against Kenthurst on a sunny Saturday with another makeshift team. Bringing in Matt Dewstow, Jason Mak and Shiv Bargoti. The first day was perfect for us. We bowled Kenthurst out for 59 thanks to a great team bowling effort. The Saints went into bat with around 34 overs remaining in the day only to lose about 7 overs due to a thunderstorm. I regretfully miscalculated the remaining overs and we were a few runs short at the end of the day. Of course it would be sunny next week? During the week it poured. On the Friday I sent a text around to the players to see if anyone had a blower or a broom to dry the pitch. All morning it poured. Low and behold at 12 o clock as I arrived at the ground the sun shone. Andrew Whittington (blower in hand) and I with a broom started to organise the drying of the pitch. However, the electrical cord was too short reminiscent of the Keystone Cops). Hemadri Bargoti was sent to purchase another extension cord somewhere in Glenorie. As history has it we managed to pass Kenthurst 3 wickets down only for it to pour again 15 minutes later. The final beckoned against Normanhurst! Again the Gods were on our side. I won my 13th toss of the season, a record for me and sent Normanhurst in on a damp wicket. Rob Cleland bowled superbly taking 5 for 20 off 15 overs. Ably supported by Brendan Ible and our young gun Anthony Brett, taking two wickets each. Finals are always based on two innings and this was no exception. We passed Normanhurst 7 wickets down and ended up with a massive 12 run lead. Being the lower ranked side all we needed was a first innings lead. The second innings was a bit different in that the wicket played better for both teams. Normanhurst had to make runs and quickly to try and bowl us out in time. The rain struck a couple of times on the second day with Normanhurst having to declare at 8 for 125 following another rain break after lunch. This left us with a total of 114 to win or not get all out. We started well enough losing our first wicket at 14, however, wickets started to fall at regular intervals until Will Enos, Ravi De Silva and Warren Collins steadied the ship. With 1 over remaining Ravi (37) was finally out with 4 balls remaining. Nail biting stuff. Then Rob Cleland faced the last few balls for an emphatic victory to the Saints. A fitting finish for man of the match Rob Cleland taking match high figures of 10 for 82, bowling 36 overs over the two days. Well this is my last report as a captain and player for the mighty St Ives Cricket Club. I would like to thank the many players I have come to know over the years especially my mentors Bob Abdullah, Mike Stinson and Tim Paterson. I wish St Ives all the very best for the future although I will be keeping a close eye week to week and come and watch a game or two. 21 C-Reserve Grade Report The highlight game of the season was our last, where we took Hornsby apart to win outright this was our last big effort to get in to semi-finals With the addition of a couple of club stalwarts (Rod Rocket Grosvenor, Paul Crackers Christie and Hemadri H Bargoti) coming down from the higher grades, the C2 team actually commenced the season in C Grade. As always we were unable to field a full team with 11 players week-in week-out, and we were made to pay by losing all our first three games in C1s, albeit one of them went down to the wire against Berowra. As a result we were demoted to C2s for the remainder of the season and we had mixed results. One highlight was a spanking 144 from Hemadri Bargoti (548 runs for the season) against Hornsby Heights at Montview Oval. Whenever H was at the crease there was always a sniff of victory. Hemadri also followed up brilliant batting displays with great spells of bowling nabbing 30 wickets for the season across B2, C1 and C2 grades, including a premiership cap for B2s. His brother, Shivank Shiv Bargoti, was given more opportunities this season to show his qualities smashing boundaries as a makeshift opener and collecting 20 wickets for the season with his fast off-spin. As always, the ever reliable Allan Dwyer opened the batting amassing 282 runs for the season. Matt Dewstow took charge of the team for most of the season, after Bob Dewstow decided to slowly step away from the game. Matt performed well with the ball (14 wickets) and bat in the middle order. His bowling was supported by swing bowling ace Rocket (25 wickets for the season), Crackers who took 10 wickets for the season in tidy left-arm spells, and Scott Murray (12 wickets and 159 runs for the season) who bowled some slow swingers that often bamboozled the batsman. Jeremy Chenu made his full return this season taking ST IVES CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT dismissals as wicketkeeper and a half century against Kissing Pt in Rd 12. Failure of registered players to turn up for games also opened the door for new players to join the club. One of them was Miles Allen-Scott who was a solid replacement for Jeremy as wicket-keeper (when unavailable) and also notched up a game winning 67 against Kissing Point in Rd 7. Jason Mak made a late, but welcome, entrance for the second half of the season taking 16 wickets and scoring 102 runs from 9 innings. Thanks also to Anthony Nunn, who helped out on occasions. Anthony was handy with the bat scoring 137 runs at an average of Had we been placed in C Reserve Grade from the beginning of the season, we would have likely had a semi-finals berth. At least the season has provided a good foundation for us to build on next year. JEREMY CHENU C-RESERVE MANAGER

23 D Grade Report The highlight game of the season was our last, where we took Hornsby apart to win outright this was our last big effort to get in to semi-finals Thanks to all the guys for a thoroughly enjoyable season, we have a great bunch of chaps in D Grade and it s been an absolute pleasure Bring on next year! - All the way to the Final this time! Our season started well with strong wins against Berowra and Thornleigh and then followed that up with a gritty tie against our bogey team Normanhurst- Warrawee. Our early positive results were mainly due to some strong batting performances from Jimmy Read, Sam Whiteley and Dave Flaks, ably supported by Jimmy Read, Matt Denicker, Phil Bromley and Yianni Velkou with the ball. We were promoted into C3 Grade (for one game) and we bowled and fielded very well. Our batting wasn t up to taking on the number one team in C3 on a turf pitch. We lost on first innings. (A mention needs to go to Ash Kesaru and William White (on loan from D2) who both batted like true test openers in extremely tough circumstances.) Back in D Grade, we were consistently competitive - as always we put in excellent fielding and bowling performances and our attitude was exceptional. We had a few good wins (including a solid outright victory over Kissing Point CC - who eventually went on to win the competition) but our batting let us down on occasion and we only won five of the next ten games The highlight game of the season was our last, where we took Hornsby apart to win outright this was our last big effort to get in to semi-finals We finished in joint-third place on points with two other teams, but unfortunately we missed out on the semi-finals based on our run-rate. Obviously, all of the guys were gutted. The really positive aspect of our play all season was our bowling and fielding. Everyone chipped in on the field to support some excellent bowling spells, and I thoroughly believe that we are the best fielding side in our grade by far. The whole side fielded with energy, attitude and tenacity. We also put in great efforts with the bat this season has had some of the most memorable innings I have seen in D Grade - and not just from the top order. At one stage or another everyone has scored runs and usually when we have needed them. I d like to mention the names of a few guys who may not have the figures to show for it, but have consistently helped to form match winning and match saving partnerships Matt Boase, Luke Jarman and Ash Kesaru - Well done fellas. All of the guys played out of their skins all season and every time we took the field we went to play hard and have fun. I cannot speak highly enough of the attitude that everyone displayed, not just within our team but within a club context as well - special thanks needs to be made to all the players who helped out the other grades this season everyone at the club truly appreciates it. We believed that we were the best team in the competition, and we believed that we could win it, and we came so very close to doing so. That said, we never stopped having fun. Our strategy was almost entirely about winning, our fields were rarely defensive and our bowling was aggressive. Our batting was built around the bowling, and if we lost a wicket, we were confident that someone would deliver, and they almost always did. I can t fail to take note of our performance in the opening T20 tournament, where we were narrowly defeated in the semi-final, on the way beating 2 D1 teams. The majority of games began with a pre-match huddle with a rousing speech from the captain, which more often than not consisted of 1 word, win. In the longer form of the game, we did exceptionally well, making the semi finals and only really going out due the rain on day 2. We only lost 5 games, 2x to Kissing Point who went on to win the comp, 2x to Hornsby who we fancied we should have beaten in the semi, and once 2nd innings to WPHC having won 1st innings and played 2 short 2nd innings (with a full 11 we should have won 2nd innings, failing by only 14 runs). Martin Grosvenor: Was bowled in the first T20 game, and it was the only time he would hear the rattle of his stumps all season. So often the solid opener to see off the new ball. Set us up in the semi-final top scoring with 39 against some decent bowling. Marty also proved useful with the ball causing the batmen problems with his turn and bounce (2/15 off 3 and 2/22 off 4). Mike Cowper: Didn t have his best season, but scores of 65 no and 46 were enough to account for Kenthurst Upper Hills on both occassions. William White: Played for 4 club teams when needed and a really solid year, great behind the stumps, some decent bowling spells (4/8 off 11 v Kissing Point and 2/2 off 2.5 v WPHC) and much like Mike did for Kenthurst Upper Hills, William did for Berowra with 78 and a season highlight of 111 in the opening game, only to be dismissed by a poor umpiring call with the ball missing the wicket by the length of Nelsons good leg. Tim Coates: Mr consistency, the epitome of our belief, Tim was the star of the second half of the season with both bat and ball. In 40 degree heat against Kissing Point, Tim started the recovery from defeat 1st innings to a quite possible win 2nd innings. At 1 point as Tim had a lie down on the pitch in a gap in play, the Kissing Point batsman said to me, I m a bit worried about Tim, I would be too if I was facing him I replied before Tim took another wicket. His best batting came in a 6 game spell after Christmas when he averaged over 40 helped by 71no v Thornleigh. Bowling of 4/31 off 10 and 2/5 off 5 indicate how handy he was with the ball in hand, not to mention his 7 catches this season. Nigel Lazarus: Captained the win which effectively confirmed our semi-final spot, and did an excellent job. Nigel batted really well this season, and despite being out twice in the 40s early in the season, got his maiden 50 against Berowra. Solid and quick between the wickets, our honesty as umpires was Nigel s curse this season with no less than 6 lbw dismissals. Josh Lazarus: Also helped out up the grades. At the start of the season, you would have had Josh down as a bowler, but that was soon changed to all rounder as Josh found consistency with the bat. Josh showed far more discipline and maturity as he generally set about building his innings. 68 against Thornliegh the pick of his 14 scores in double figures, including 33 at B grade. With 6 catches, 1 stumping and 3 assisted run outs he proved useful in the field. As a bowler, 5/23 off 9 and 4/21 off 8 (D1s) were the pick of his bowling with the stats showing that like Tim, he was hard to play. Dan Anderson: Often not rewarded for some aggressive bowling. Figures of 3/7 off 5 against Thornleigh was the pick but his aggression and strength often put a set batsman off. Dan is our pinch hitter, and was well suited to the T20s. Dan rarely scores singles and there are either fireworks or the clatter of stumps when he comes to the crease, but that is what he is often there to do. Gavin Wingfield: 5 steps left or 2 steps back was so often the orders from the skipper when setting the field as we tried to never miss an opportunity to get a batsman out. Often batted down the order and despite a top score of 23 no the pick would have to be 18 and 16 no v Kissing Point partnering Marty to allay any fears of a 2nd innings loss, and setting up an opportunity to consider a win. Economical in his rare infrequent and short spells of bowling a mixed bag often at a set batsman to try and break his concentration. James Cameron: Tormented Thornleigh with the bat scoring 50 and 57, and taking 1/14 off 7 and 2/17 off 6 but so often only played parts of games as work had to take priority. Abhik Sengupta didn t play as regularly but of particular note was his 9/85 v Kissing Point, denied a 10 for by the opener retiring at the end of the 1st day. Andrew Kennett: Put on 90 runs with Abhik in the semi-final to see us to a total which we believed was enough to win it but for the rain on the second day. Matts Denicker and Boase: Helped us out on a number of occassions from D1, and both bolwed, batted and fielded well for us. 2/27 off 6 Denickers best bowling while reports were that Boase was the pick of the fielders in the semi final. Thanks to all those others who helped us out for the odd couple of games, and we look forward to seeing you more regularly next season. Special mention to Bill White who despite batting only the once, was 12th man throughout the season and was often utilised willingly in that capacity, and never let us down. It was a thoroughly enjoyable season, and I would like to thank all of the players who played for us. We used a big squad and shared players with D1 and occasionally other teams. I really hope that the team stays together for next year so that we can make another assault on the title. The highlights for me as captain is to enjoy the never say die attitude we demonstrated throughout, and I particularly enjoyed the quiz game where, having discussed that fielding to batsmen who were simply blocking us out was a little dull, Tim brought along a pocket book of Trivia and filled the time between each delivery with a question from the book. There were a number of occasions where even the batsmen joined in. Cricket in D2 is fun, but don t under estimate the ability which exists in that grade, we are competitive but sociable. Credit to the other teams in the grade who have also played in the true spirit of the game. GAVIN WINGFIELD D-RESERVE GRADE CAPTAIN 25 ST IVES CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT
