1 MIDWEEK NEWS WEEKLY TUESDAY, AUGUST 28, 30, MidWeek 21 IP22 IP22 IP22 INDIA VS WINDIES SECOND T20I ABANDONED, DHONI'S MEN LOSE SERIES Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets Khel Ratna Awardees-PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik, Dipa Karmakar and Jitu Rai in New Delhi (IANS). PM bats for better sports acumen in Mann Ki Baat NEW DELHI, (IANS) Congratulating Indian sportsmen and athletes, especially the "daughters of India" who performed well at the Rio Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said there was clearly a need to do more to improve the country's medals tally. Addressing the nation over radio in his 23rd Mann Ki Baat talk, he touched upon Kashmir, cleanliness, Ganga rejuvenation and environment conservation, among other issues. Modi also paid tributes to hockey legend Dhyan Chand on the eve of his 111th birth anniversary, and to Mother Teresa, who is to be canonised on September 4. Congratulating the athletes who performed well at the Rio Olympics, Modi stressed that sports should not be seen as a waste of time and that state governments must support and promote at least two sports of their choice. "Although our medals tally is just two, but many Indian sportsmen have performed quite well... but we have to do more. If we keep doing what we have been, then we would face disappointment again. "I have announced a committee to look deeply into the matter. It would study the best practices (in sports) across the world and would prepare a roadmap on how to perform better at the 2020, 2024 and 2028 Olympics," Modi said. Touching upon the Kashmir situation, he said "unity" and "compassion" have been the key words while dealing with the unrest in the Valley, while shaming the troublemakers who were using children as shields. "In my interaction with different political groups, one thing emerged. It was unity and compassion to be the core mantra of SINDHU, SAKSHI, DIPA, JITU GET KHEL RATNAS NEW DELHI, (IANS) Shuttler P.V. Sindhu, wrestler Sakshi Malik, gymnast Dipa Karmakar, and shooter Jitu Rai were on Monday conferred the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna -- the country's highest sporting honour -- at Rashtrapati Bhawan here. President Pranab Mukherjee presented the awards amid thunderous applause at the Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan on the occasion of National Spor ts Day. The President also gave away the Dronacharya awards to Nagapuri Ramesh (Athletics), Sagar Mal Dhayal (Boxing), Raj Kumar Sharma (Cricket), Bishweshwar Nandi (Gymnastics), S Pradeep Kumar (Swimming) and Mahabir Singh (Wrestling). Apart from this, 15 sportspersons were given the Arjuna Awards, among them Olympian runner Lalita Babar, boxer Shiva Thapa, cricketer Ajinkya Rahane, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, hockey players Rani Rampal and VR Raghunath. While athlete Satti Geetha, hockey player Sylvanus Dung Dung and rower Rajendra Pralhad Shelke were conferred the Dhyanchand Award. Those trying to incite trouble from behind children will have to answer for their deeds to these innocent children some day," he said. Raising concern over environmental degradation, Modi urged people to avoid using idols made of Plaster of Paris (POP) during the Ganesh Chaturthi and Durga Puja festivals. "Festival is the time of self-evaluation and they need to change with time. Environment is damaged due to immersion of POP idols. Let's go back to old traditions and adopt idols made of pond clay," he said. Paying tributes to Mother Teresa, Modi said that every Indian is feeling proud as she has officially been recognised as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. "Mother Teresa devoted her whole life serving the poor and destitute people in India. When such a person is conferred with sainthood, it is natural for Indians to feel proud," he said, noting that despite not being an Indian, she had dedicated her whole life to serving Indians. The Prime Minister also praised a village pradhan from Karnataka for building a toilet in the house of a girl who staged a protest demanding a toilet. He appreciated Mohammad Shafi from Koppal district for building the toilet in the house of 16-year-old Mallamma, who demanded one but her poor parents could not arrange it. When Shafi heard about the matter, he arranged Rs 18,000 for the construction of a toilet in her house, Modi said. Modi also praised the 1.25 lakh students of 1,700 schools in Chhattisgarh's Kabirdham district for writing to their parents requesting a toilet in their house instead of spending money on birthdays. Dhoni praises Mishra, Ashwin for fantastic bowling effort Lauderhill (Florida), (IANS) India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni heaped praise on offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin and leg-spinner Amit Mishra for putting up a "fantastic effort" to bowl out the West Indies for a low score in the second Twenty20 International cricket match here. After the one-run defeat in the high-scoring first game, Indian bowlers came back well to bowl out West Indies for 143. Mishra picked up three wickets for 24 runs in his four overs, while Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami picked up two wickets each to restrict the reigning T20 champions to a below-par total. But the second match was abandoned due to rain and West Indies bagged the twomatch series 1-0. "I felt bowlers executed plans very well; 150 was a good score to achieve. I'm not saying we would have definitely won, but a good batting effort would have seen us through. LAUDERHILL (FLORIDA), (IANS) The second match of the twomatch Twenty20 International (T20I) between India and the West Indies here on Sunday was called off due to rain, leading to the latter clinch the cricket series 1-0. After bowling out the West Indies for 143 in 19.4 overs, India were 15/0 in two overs when the dark clouds hovering over Lauderhill opened up, interrupting the play. Even though the rain stopped, wet outfield meant that the match couldn't be resumed. It resulted in the match being called off and the West Indies bagged the series, thanks to their one-run win in the first match on Saturday at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground. In the second match, India's bowlers showed marked improvement bowling out the West Indies for 143 in 19.4 overs and the team looked very much in contention to share the honours in the series. India opted to bowl and Jasprit Bumrah (2/26), Mohammed Shami (2/31), Amit Mishra (3/24) and Ravichandran Ashwin (2/11) perfectly exploited the West Indian batsmen's loopholes as the latter struggled from the very start and even failed to play the full 20 overs. Unlike their previous encounter which saw the West Indies hammering out 245/6 thanks to opening batsmen Evin Lewis (49- ball 100) and Johnson Charles (33-ball 79), India's bowlers operated with discipline and didn't alllow the West Indies batsmen to swing their bat freely. NO CRICKET AT HOME FOR EIGHT YEARS, NO CRICKET OUTSIDE ASIA FOR THREE YEARS, NO CRICKET ANYWHERE FOR SIX MONTHS, YET NUMBER ONE INCREDIBLE ACHIEVEMENT BY PAKISTAN! BY DR ADNAN KHAN The ICC Test Championship is an international competition run by the International Cricket Council in the sport of cricket for the 10 teams that play Test cricket. Currently Team Pakistan is the Number one ranked Test team for the first ever time since rankings were introduced in Pakistan came at the top in August 2016 when India drew the last Test of the 4-match series against West Indies. Pakistan played some brilliant cricket this summer in the home of cricket with outstanding heroics in London. Delightful to see them fighting for the victory with no cricket at home for eight years, no cricket outside Asia for three years, no cricket anywhere since six months and yet gaining number one spot. Wow! Incredible achievement! Coming back to the ranking rules, after every Test series, the two teams involved receive points based on a mathematical formula. Each team's points total is divided by their total number of matches played to give a 'rating', and the Testplaying teams are ranked by order of rating. A drawn match between higher and lower rated teams will benefit the lower-rated team at the expense of the higher-rated team. Since rankings were introduced in 2003, Pakistan is the fifth team to become number one In ICC Test rankings while Australia, England, India, South Africa are the others. Kangaroos are the one who dominated the rankings single handedly at the time of their introduction by playing the scientific cricket and giving the proof of their power house by winning the three world cup titles in between. From June 2003 to August 2009, Aussies remained number one Test team for 74 months. Since then in 85 months, rankings keep on stumbling up and down and have been changed ten times. While aussies keeping the longest reign, team India remained the most unlucky by holding this reign of number one Test team for only five days which is the shortest ever time for any team to stay at the top. In past, all teams remained at number one spot at least for one month. In last three years, if you are seeking for the top two ranked teams in AWAY Tests, it's Pakistan who played total number of 13 matches, won six, lost six, drawn one, while India playing total of 21 matches, winning five, losing eight, drawn eight. The International Cricket Council awards a trophy, the ICC Test Championship mace, to the team holding the highest rating. The mace is transferred whenever a new team moves to the top of the rating list. The team that is top of the ratings table on 1 April each year also wins a cash prize, currently $1 million. This mace will be presented to Misbah next month after the completion of English tour. What an achievement for a humble and down to earth Pakistan captain leading from the front. I wonder on the philosophy of keeping Misbah away from the other formats and strongly deny the fact Misbah can't lead team Green in the limited over formats. Pakistan team scoring in other formats with the pattern followed two decades ago and denying for the place for their victorious captain who remained their sole survivor in most of the matches in all the formats. Anyhow congratulations to team Pakistan, having not played a home Test for a long time and still tight up the top. Bring on the summer.

Rahul's ton in vain as Windies stop India by 1 run in first T20I LAUDERHILL (US), (IANS) Promising batsman Lokesh Rahul's 110 not out went in vain as West Indies managed to defeat India by one run in the nail-biting first T20 International at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground here on Saturday. With India needing 2 runs from the final ball, West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo kept his nerves to dismiss Mahendra Singh Dhoni (43) with a slower one to take the Caribbean side home. Chasing a mammoth 246, Rahul struck the second fastest century in T20 Internationals to guide India to an almost improbable win before the last ball twist changed the fortunes of the men in blue. With the century, the Karnataka batsman has now become the third Indian to score a century in all three formats of the game. The 24-year-old Rahul, who was preferred over regular opener Shikhar Dhawan for the match, made the most of the opportunity, bringing up 89 runs for the third wicket with Rohit Sharma (62) before almost guiding the team to victory with a 107-run stand with Dhoni. Earlier, India were off to a disappointing start losing the key wickets of opener Ajinkya Rahane (7) and Test skipper Virat Kohli (16) cheaply, until Sharma was joined by Rahul and their 89-run stand for the third wicket provided momentum for the chase. The Mumbai batsman's innings was laced with four boundaries and as many sixes, including the three consecutive maximums off tweaker Sunil Narine, before being caught by Johnson Charles at deep midwicket off Keiron Pollard in the 12th over. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni then joined Rahul, who by now got to his half century off 26 balls and the duo took the attack to the opposition. West Indies also paid the price for giving Rahul another chance on 38 when skipper Carlos Brathwaite dropped him at long off off Andre Russell. Both the right-handers were at their lethal best with Dhoni bringing the asking rate down with two sixes off Russel in the 17th over while Rahul got one more to take India to 213/3. With India needing 33 from the last three, Rahul got to his century with a brilliant six and then struck a four off the very next ball. But all the drama was stored for the last over, in which India managed to score six out of the required eight runs, before Dhoni, who survived a catch on the first ball, was caught at short third-man on the final ball. Earlier, riding on opener Evin Lewis' century, West Indies posted 245/6 after being sent in to bat, in what is the US's only International Cricket Council (ICC) recognised cricket stadium. The carnage started from the word go as the opening duo of Johnson Charles (79) and Lewis clobbered pacer Mohammed Shami for a six and two fours in the opening over. The Indian bowlers had no answer to the onslaught launched by the West Indians with Charles being the more aggressive of the two. Shami, who was recalled for his second spell, finally managed to bring the onslaught to a halt by removing Charles with a full length delivery that rocked his off-stump. Charles' 33-ball knock was laced with six boundaries and seven massive sixes and his partnership with Lewis produced 126 runs. The dismissal of Charles brought in all-rounder Andre Russell, who was promoted to keep the run-rate soaring. Playing his second ever T20I, Lewis, who till now was playing second fiddle, began his attack, getting to his 50 off 25 balls with four boundaries and three sixes. India U-16 women footballers taking inspiration from Sindhu, Sakshi WEI FANG (CHINA), (IANS) The Indian Under-16 women footballers, who landed here for the forthcoming AFC Qualifiers, on Friday said they have taken inspiration from Rio Olympics medallists P.V. "(P.V) Sindhu-di and Sakshi-di (Sakshi Malik) are an inspiration for us and they motivate us to excel in whatever we do," added Soumya, who leads the Indian attack force. It's about making a mark and earning respect. As I hail from Tripura, I feel more connected to Dipa-di," Laxmita added. His teacher writes to him with his own hand, said the Prime Minister. "He analyses whatever work I do in a month. He still tells me new things from various books that he reads. It is like he gives me a correspondence class every month," Modi said. Modi said he has "immense respect" for people with good handwriting as his own handwriting was not that good. PLAYING WIND INSTRUMENTS CAN INCREASE RISK OF LUNG DISEASE LONDON, (IANS) Love to play wind instruments like trumpets, trombones, saxophones or bagpipes? Be careful, you may be at an increased risk of developing a deadly inflammatory lung disease dubbed as 'bagpipe lung', warns a study. The warning comes after a 61-year-old British man died of the chronic inflammatory lung condition called hypersensitivity pneumonitis -- thought to have been caused by regularly breathing in mould and fungi lurking inside the moist interior of a set of bagpipes. The man had a dry cough and progressive breathlessness for seven years, despite treatment with immunosuppressant drugs. The doctors identified multiple potential precipitating antigens isolated from his bagpipes. He died as a result of extensive lung damage consistent with acute respiratory distress syndrome and tissue fibrosis (scarring), the study said. "This is the first case that identified fungal exposure, from a bagpipe player, as a potential trigger for the development of (hypersensitivity pneumonitis)," said Jenny King from University Hospital of South Manchester (UHSM) in Manchester, Britain. The findings showed that interiors of wind instruments turn moist and may thus foster growth of fungi or moulds that can lead to hypersensitivity pneumonitis, that gets triggered by the immune system's response to an inhaled environmental antigen. The condition can eventually progress to disabling or fatal lung disease, the authors noted, adding that any type of wind instrument could be contaminated with yeasts and moulds, making players susceptible to the risk of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Cleaning instruments immediately after use and allowing them to drip dry could theoretically curb the risk of microbe growth, the researchers suggested, in the paper published in the journal Thorax. Umbilical cells linked to increase risk of obesity NEW YORK, (IANS) Children born to obese mothers are likely to be at an increased risk of obesity as a result of their umbilical cells showing impaired expression of genes regulating cell energy and metabolism, a study has found. The study published in the International Journal of Obesity suggested that the increased risks of obesity may be driven by boosted levels of certain lipids (fats and other substances that are not soluble in water) in the maternal blood that flows through the umbilical cord. For the study, the researchers gathered umbilical cords after birth from women without diabetes and recruited 24 overweight or obese women (with a body mass index over 25 before pregnancy), and 13 women who were not overweight for the study. The scientists collected umbilical cells from the vein that carries oxygen and other nutrients from the placenta to the embryo. The team discovered that in these cells, increased obesity in the mothers correlated with lower expression of genes regulating mitochondria (which act as the cell's powerhouses) and of other genes regulating the production and metabolism of lipids. "This suggests that already at birth there are detectable metabolic perturbations resulting from maternal obesity. Changes in these cells were similar to some known to occur in obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes," said Elvira Isganaitis, Researcher at the Harvard Medical School. When the researchers followed up by analysing fetal blood from the umbilical cord vein, it was found that the infants of obese mothers had significantly higher levels of many lipids that are known to be metabolically deleterious, like saturated fatty acids. Fat tissues in the obese mothers may shed fatty acids that make their way into the fetal blood and create a kind of fuel overload for the embryo. Use alternatives to food to comfort infants: Study NEW YORK, (IANS) Parents could reward infants with activity or cuddling rather than food, encouraging healthy behaviour and lifestyle in the future, says a study. Babies who get upset easily and take longer to calm down might be at higher risk of obesity. The study found that children can learn healthier lifestyles only when parents model healthy behaviour themselves and don't immediately use food to comfort a child who is crying or fussing. "The research tells us that differences in behaviour begin as early as infancy and those differences can influence health behaviours that impact future health risks," said Kai Ling Kong. ADDED SUGARS MAY UP HEART DISEASE RISK IN KIDS NEW YORK, (IANS) Does your toddler have a bigger appetite for drinks with added sugar such as soda, fruit-flavoured and sports drinks, than fresh fruits and green vegetables? Be warned, as children between the age of two-to-18 consuming more than six teaspoons of added sugars a day -- equivalent to about 100 calories or 25 grams of added sugars -- may be at an increased risk of obesity and elevated blood pressure that are key factors for developing heart disease, a study has found. The findings showed that the likelihood of children developing health problems rises with an increase in the amount of added sugars consumed. "Children who eat foods loaded with added sugars tend to eat fewer healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products that are good for their heart health," said lead author Miriam Vos, Professor at Emory University in Georgia, US. Further, overweight children who continue to take in more added sugars are more likely to be insulin resistant -- a precursor to developing Type 2 diabetes. One of the most common sources of added sugars is sugar-sweetened beverages, such as soda, fruit-flavoured and sports drinks, sweetened teas and energy drinks. "Children should not drink more than one 8-ounce sugar-sweetened drink a week," Vos added. Moreover, sweet processed foods, which tend to be loaded with added sugars, such as cereal bars, cookies, cakes and many other foods marketed specifically for children, like sweet cereals, should also be avoided. Added sugars -- including table sugar, fructose and honey - either used in processing and preparing foods or beverages, added to foods at the table or eaten separately -- should not be included at all in the diet of children under the age of two-year, the researchers warned. The calorie needs of children in this age group are lower than older children and adults, so there is little room for food and beverages containing added sugars that don't provide them with good nutrition. In addition, taste preferences begin early in life, so limiting added sugars may help children develop a life-long preference for healthier foods, the study said. How to prevent obesity, eating disorders in teenagers NEW YORK, (IANS) Parents must focus on a healthy balanced lifestyle for their children instead of focussing on weight or dieting in order to prevent obesity and eating disorder among teenagers, say new guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The guidelines were developed in response to growing concern about teenagers' use of unhealthy methods to lose weight. Quick, substantial weight loss methods can trigger medical consequences such as unstable heart rate. Also, teenagers who diet in ninth grade are three times more likely than their peers to be overweight in 12th grade, the researchers said. "Scientific evidence increasingly shows that for teenagers, dieting is a bad news," said lead author Neville Golden, Professor at the Stanford University in California. The calorie-counting diets can deprive growing teenagers of the energy they need and lead to symptoms of anorexia nervosa, which may even become life-threatening. Parents and doctors should not encourage dieting, and should avoid "weight talk" such as commenting on their own weight or their child's weight. Instead parents should help their children develop a healthy body image by encouraging them to eat a balanced diet and to exercise for fitness, not weight loss, the researchers stated. Further, they should also never tease teenagers about their weight. Negative comments about weight can also be detrimental to a teenager's health. "Mothers who talk about their own bodies and weights can inadvertently encourage their kids to have body dissatisfaction, which we see in half of teenage girls and a quarter of boys," Golden noted. Such dissatisfaction is associated with lower levels of physical activity and with use of vomiting, laxatives and diuretics to control weight. Families should eat regular meals together, the researchers suggested, adding that eating family meals is likely to prevent against weight problems, said the paper published online in the journal Pediatrics.
