7 A BRIEF HISTORY OF WYCOMBE HOUSE Wycombe House Cricket Club was formed by members of the Hammersmith Branch of the YMCA at the end of The name 'Wycombe House' derived from the name of the YMCA's Hammersmith Road H.Q. (Long since demolished). The Club's first ground was a pitch on Wormwood Scrubs rented from the London County Council and it later played on a number of rented grounds in the West London area before arriving at its present ground in The ground was requisitioned during World War II as a farm for livestock and Cricket did not restart until 1948, and since then the club has gone from strength to strength, purchasing its own freehold in 1978 and inaugurating a new clubhouse in The Tennis Section was formed in 1930 and played on grass courts until 1984, when four hard courts were laid down. Floodlighting two in 1992 has considerably extended the Tennis Section. Four teams play in the Middlesex Summer League, three men and one ladies, five teams play in the Middlesex Floodlit League, three men, one ladies and one mixed and one mixed team plays in the Middlesex Veterans League. In addition, teams enter knockout county and national tournaments competitions throughout the year. Junior tennis is also played throughout the year with coaching provided for 4 to 16 year old players by a licensed LTA coach. Table Tennis has been played locally for many years and the Club has at present two teams in the local league. It was in 1953 that the Colts played their first games. Today we have a flourishing Colts Section of over 150 colts under the guidance of well qualified coaches. A large fixture list is arranged for all age groups against colts sides from other clubs playing league, friendly and cup competitions. The under 13's were National Champions in 1987, 1992 and in 1992 the Colts had a clean sweep winning the Area and County Leagues at all age groups, becoming the first winners of the County Victor Laudorum Cup, which they again won in 1999 and Boys from Wycombe House have gone on to play variously for England, Middlesex, Worcestershire, Somerset, Essex, Kent, Middlesex Colts, Middlesex Schools, England Schools and MMC, Middlesex and England Young Cricketers. Winter 2002/03 saw the club entering a football team in the Marathon Sunday League and were winners of the Junior Cup. 6
