5 WRIGHT EDLIN SHIELD This Perpetual Shield was created in recognition of the fantastic A-Grade Grand Final match between Bentleigh Methodists (now Bentleigh Uniting) and Brighton Union, and is played for every year by the highest-placed XIs. From the two clubs. Brighton Union had won six consecutive Premierships in the Brighton District Cricket Association and had joined the City of Moorabbin Cricket Association (CMCA) and was beaten by Bentleigh Methodist in the grand final after leading on the first innings in a game played in true sporting fashion. The late Wally Wright (Bentleigh Methodist) joined the club as first eleven scorer in 1950 and also scored for the juniors in the morning. He was confined to a wheelchair but despite this was active at both club level and the CMCA. Wally wore his club cap everywhere and had his wheelchair painted in the club s maroon and gold colours and in 1962 the club presented him with a new wheelchair. The late Frank Edlin (Brighton Union) joined the club in 1936, and was deaf and dumb and thus nick-named dummy. He retired in 1958 due to illness. He played mainly in the seconds and thirds, also captained sides and had a remarkable ability to place fields and make bowling changes although he could not speak. Frank played 221 games, 199 of these consecutively, and made over 6,000 runs and took over 800 wickets, with his best bowling effort 8/44 and was Club Champion on three occasions. 6 PITT GOROZIDIS SHIELD The Pitt-Gorozidis Shield was donated by John Jones (East Sandringham) and Noel Pullen for annual matches between these two proud clubs. TheShield is named in honour of East Sandringham legend Kim Pitt and Brighton Union great Con Gorozidis, widely considered to be two of the outstanding players in CMCA history. It was first competed for in season Con Gorozidis Con joined the club in 1974 as a 13 year old and from the earliest days was it was obvious he was an immensely talented player. At the age of 14 he displayed great maturity to steer the 4th XI to victory, scoring 80 in a grand final that was slipping away, and rapidly progressed to the 1st XI, where he soon became an automatic selection. An intimidating opening bowler, some of Con s greatest moments have been with the ball a marathon 9/140 off 54 overs in the grand final against arch-rivals East Sandringham (Union won by 2 runs) and 10/68 against Hampton United in a remarkable tied game in Throughout the season, he and Michael Cordwell were a devastating new-ball combination, taking a combined 100 wickets to virtually bowl Union to the premiership. In the semi-final against Bentleigh Uniting Con was dismissed cheaply but was so determined to contribute he bowled 44 overs unchanged at one end, taking 5/59, and was so exhausted at the end he virtually had to be carried off. Brighton Union coach Alex Gerdan described him as the ultimate competitor. His 630 1st XI wickets is the highest tally for the club that can be documented. 6 As well as being a great bowler, Con has been a spectacular and prolific batsman. His six-hitting feats at Hurlingham Park are legendary, with some enormous hits sailing over 150 metres into the adjacent kindergarten and blocks of flats. His best year with the bat was , when he made 842 runs and took 38 wickets but was struck down with a serious knee injury at football training and missed out on playing in back-to-back premiership wins. While age and injury curtailed his bowling in the late 1990s, Con continued to turn it on with the bat. In Rd 1 of the season he smashed a typically brutal 130 before being runout attempting an ambitious second run. Coming in at 3/2, he made 117 and in true Con style had not picked up a bat since the end of the previous season. In a rain-shortened semi-final against Omega in , he blasted a brilliant match-winning 52 in only 19 balls (6 sixes, including 2 that went over the Bricker Pavilion into the athletics track behind). In a great career Con has made 11 centuries in the 1st XI, scored over 10,500 1st XI runs (nearly double the next highest 1st XI runs scorer), and has played 328 1st XI games, easily a club record. A Life-member, 16 time Senior Club Champion, 5 times a premiership player, dual premiership captain/coach, winner of CMCA batting and bowling awards, 3 times winner of the Knights Sportsgoods Award as CMCA player of the year, the man known throughout the CMCA as The Champ has done it all. Club President Noel Pullen commented There will never be another one as good as him in the parks in a hundred years. Without doubt Con could have played cricket at first-class level had he wished. 7 Secretary s Annual Report for Season I present the 104 th Annual Report of the Brighton Union Cricket Club (incorporated), and I thank the committee for their efforts this season. This season the committee took on a new look with Stuart Bell completing his first full year, Julius Waras Carstensen replacing Alex Gerdan following his resignation, and Ivan Delac replacing Alex as Vice-President. I would personally like to thank President Noel Pullen and Treasurer Phillip Arnold for their continued assistance during the year. Rain disrupted play on many Saturdays during the season, making it very difficult for all, nevertheless we should be delighted with our on-field performances with three senior and three junior teams reaching the finals. The First XI reached the Grand Final for the first time since but found premiers Bentleigh Uniting too good. Congratulations to Ivan Delac and the team for reaching the ultimate game and I am sure all involved would have learnt a lot from Bentleigh Uniting s intensity and discipline. Congratulations to Dariam Kuzma and Aaron Gregory for their selection in the CMCA Longmuir Shield team of the year. Despite not making the finals, under Brian McDonough s leadership the Second XI performances over the year were very satisfying. The selection committee gave the opportunity for a number of our youth to display their abilities and going by their performance, particularly after Christmas, the club has some promising young talent. The Third XI had an outstanding season winning all eleven home and away games and deserved the Grand Final victory. Well done to Imad Amro and his team. Congratulations to Morwan Amro for winning the D-Grade CMCA bowling average and taking the CMCA aggregate wickets award. The Fourth XI did extremely well to reach the preliminary final, and although beaten had a satisfying season. Thanks to captain David Martin in his first season as captain. This season we took the unique step of appointing three coaches, one each for batting, bowling and fielding. Thanks to Ivan Delac, Ross Veitch and Andrew Hewson for performing those jobs. I particularly thank Michael Cove who did a magnificent job as Chairman of Selectors, and Brett Northage for coordinating the coaching and training throughout the season, Brett was rightly awarded the Best Clubmember award. I thank Simon Russell and Rob Robinson for their continued assistance at practice and on match day and Les Jason for First XI scoring. 7 In the junior section, we were successful in having 3 teams reach the finals. We were unable to muster sufficient players for an U-16 team, but for the first time since , the club fielded an U-17 team, which was also marks our first involvement with the Southern Churches Cricket League. Wet weather impacted on the team s results, and the side finished in 6 th place. Highlights of the season were the fine bowling efforts of Tim Hickox and Jackson McDonough. The U-14s won most of their matches and reached the grand final, but as the side were mainly first-year players they were overpowered in the final by an older, bigger and more experienced team. Nonetheless the boys can be very proud of their efforts. Austin Heldt, who was still eligible for U-12s, again had a prolific year with the bat. The U-12B side was relatively inexperienced and contained a number of first year players, but despite losing some of their better players to Private School cricket after Christmas, managed to reach the grand final. The boys were outplayed in the final by Elwood but team manager Greg Wallace did a fantastic job in moulding a competitive side. We had about half-a-dozen younger boys who we judged needed to play in a lower grade, and thus combined forces with West Bentleigh who had about 7 regulars. The combined team had a great win over eventual premiers Elsternwick to force

8 their way into 4 th spot, and while defeated in the semi-final put in a gallant effort chasing a large score. We also fielded a team of complete beginners in the U-12 modified grade, and while the boys struggled to master the skills in the first half of the season, we saw some encouraging signs in the second half of the year. No doubt these boys will continue to improve next season. Thanks to Michael Cove, Brian McDonough, Phillip Arnold, Ian Travers, Greg Wallace, Mark Paterson, James Brydon, Carey Marsden, John Lambris and Brendan Hawe for their contributions in managing these teams, amd also to the parents who assisted with transport and refreshments for the kids. The highlight socially for the season was the function held at the New Bay Hotel in February. The response from the membership was outstanding and and a great night was enjoyed by all. To Liz and Lynton Vaughan, I cannot express enough my appreciation for their work in the canteen during the season. Financially the club is in good shape, however we have some significant challenges ahead with the construction of new practice nets, which we are required to commit to financially. Finally I thank the sponsors which are listed in another part of this Report, and it was very sad that one of our significant sponsors and former player Maurie Jones lost his battle with cancer. To his family I offer my sincere sympathy.
