GREG CHAPPELL INTRODUCTION 18
WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY? The most important assets of a bowler are length and direction. For a young player 22 yards is too far to send the ball. So we find that a special provision has to be made to meet these conditions. If a boy (or girl) can regularly pitch the ball on that one spot he (she) has already laid the foundation of a successful career. The younger and smaller the boy (or girl) is the shorter the distance he (she) should have to bowl, this being increased as he (she) grows bigger and stronger. Clarrie Grimmett, Tricking the Batsmen, 1934 When the opportunity arises for a little practice on the nearby wicket, it is also unwise for a boy (or girl) to tax his (her) strength in trying to bowl the ball 22 yards when he may just as easily pitch the wickets 15 yards apart, thereby conserving his (her) energy, and helping him (her) to be more accurate at a stage when it is imperative for him (her) to learn the value of accuracy in bowling. Sir Donald Bradman, How to Play Cricket, 1958 Shorter pitch is important so bowlers bowl with good technique and batsman can receive the ball on a ground where they can achieve success. Once we start adopting we will have more kids come, get skills that allow them to have success and at the top end we will see more good players coming through the system. Greg Chappell, Queensland Cricket Forum, 2017 The formats have been designed based on evidence of what kids are capable of doing. The games are going to be matched to what their abilities are, so that means we can make the [junior] game look more like the adult game. There's a false idea we need to play the so called 'proper game' presuming that by playing on the big field, with the full-sized pitch, you get the proper game but, it isn't. The proper game is one that fits the size and the abilities of the kids in terms of their physical capacities. Dr Ian Renshaw Lead Researcher (Queensland University of Technology), Queensland Cricket Forum,
COACHES ARE VITAL Coaches are central to the success of the formats ensuring the integrity of the game is enforced in every match. They are the face of junior cricket and have a strong influence on a junior player s skill development and enjoyment of the game. Research indicates that the Coach is a major factor in providing an enjoyable experience for the participant. Coaches should involve other parents in match-day field set-up, umpiring, scoring and at training sessions setting out equipment, managing drills, time-keeping etc. This will allow coaches to spend more time focusing on developing a players skills. Coaches can also assist players in the correct wearing of helmets and protective equipment and provide advice on using appropriate equipment (eg. cricket bat size & weight) 20
A CHANGE OF COACHING FOCUS There are implications for the type of cricket being played:- Match Day - Consistent ground set-up as per format - Use of appropriate equipment - Ways of reducing dead time in matches Batting Bowling Fielding - fuller balls being bowled - more vertical bat shots being played - adjusting to slightly faster carry of the ball more off-side shots - more balls in play - more balls to hit less fielders - shorter pitches, more singles being taken running between wickets - ball trajectory will change (flatter arc) - reduced pitch length with improve bowler accuracy & confidence - more area to cover attack, pick-up, throw, catch, back-up, teamwork - involvement more balls to field - field placement decisions for your players to make - wicket-keepers more balls on pitch, more involvement 21
STAGE 1 - U11 S (AGE INDICATIVE) GROUND SET-UP Fill pre-existing stump holes with soil/sand WK Striker s end 16m 40m Bowlers end 22
STAGE 2 U13 S (AGE INDICATIVE) GROUND SET-UP 45m 18m Format: Time: Players: 9 Pitch: Boundary: Stumps: Batters: Bowlers: Fielding: Dismissals: Max 30 over 180 mins 18m 45m max. circle measured from the middle of the pitch. Portable at bowlers end Retire at 35 balls (assume some players will be dismissed. Wides and No Balls count towards balls faced) 6-ball overs (max. 8) except for last over where 6 legal deliveries must be bowled. Change ends at half way point of innings. No fielder permitted within 10m of the batter except slips, gully, wicket-keeper. All dismissals count 23
Fill pre-existing stump holes with soil/sand 24
MATCH MANAGEMENT TIPS Ways for coaches to keep your game moving and finishing on time. Complete your team-sheet the night before the game Set up team marquees close to the boundary Make sure the scorers are sitting under shade and close to the boundary to assist with player names and advising ball counts. Involve parent volunteers to assist with marking boundaries, crease lines and shade shelters leaving the coach to work with their team running warm-ups etc. Add a chalk line to mark centre at the striker s end as a reference point for batters Have all your batters padded up ready to go in to bat with the next batter ready to go onto the field (helmet & batting gloves on) Rotate fielders with the next bowler fielding nearest to the bowler s end Encourage fielders to jog between positions ready for the next over When rotating extra players onto the field, swap them with the bowler who just finishing their over. Swap wicket-keepers during a drink break Place team drinks and water bottles together in a carry tray near the boundary The central umpire is the critical driver of the game, the time it is played in and the spirit in which it is played 25
A CHANGE OF COACHING FOCUS The Australian Way tell players WHAT you want them to do, NOT how to do it:- Batting hit the ball to score runs Bowling bowl with fast movement or flight/spin to take wickets Fielding catch, control & throw the ball to take wickets and save runs Training Session tips o Maximising session involvement short lines, small groups o Games and competitive activities to teach (open environment learning) o Creating a positive learning environment o Use nets and centre wicket (game scenarios) o Make sure the pitch length is set the same as on match day o Provide safe training and playing environments for players o Make use of a variety of equipment o Involve other parents to assist at training o Adhere to scheduled start/finish times o Make sure the session is fun and engaging! #DestroyTheSemiCircle 26
PLAYER SKILLS SCORECARD We want all cricketers to have every chance to maximise their cricketing skills and enjoy sustainable success whilst participating in this great sport. Cricket Coaches Australia have developed new junior skills scorecards based on best practice for assessing skills and providing feedback to your players. You can: Download and print a skills scorecard appropriate to the players you coach Rate your players skills by completing a scorecard Share the skills scorecard with the player Contained in the scorecards are the skills that players should be aiming to achieve. Targeted for each indicative age group, follow the ratings on the scorecards to determine where your players are at and provide them with feedback on areas to improve. Consider completing the skills scorecard preseason, during the season and near the end of the season. Also available on the Junior Formats App! 27
