President s Report This season will be remembered for many reasons, with some great highs, and tragic lows. Few seasons have been touched with the sad events experienced during the season just completed, with the passing of Test Cricketer Phillip Hughes, local cricket figure Dave Tribolet, and our own legend Richie Benaud. Highlights included the finishing flourish to the cricket season, with Parra undefeated in all grades for the last three rounds, the announcement of the Merit Teams of the 1950s and 1960s, and the commemoration of the Centenary of the ANZAC landing of Gallipoli. In addition, we launched the inaugural Cumberland Medal, an award that will be a club highlight for many years to come. On the field, we celebrated a Premiership victory from our Academy Team, playing for the first time in the PDCA competition. Parramatta s overall playing performance was solid, finishing 8 th in the Club Championship. Coming home with a wet sail the club recovered from a slow start to rocket up the table and back into the top 10 of the 20 team competition for the 3 rd time in the last 4 years. Parramatta made finals appearances in First Grade (Limited Over Competition), Second Grade and Fifth Grade. The Firsts have made a habit of qualifying for the finals series in the shorter forms, having made finals in the Limited Over (50 Over) Competition or the T20 Competition, having qualified twice in each over the last 5 year seasons. Under new skipper Michael Castle the side showed good improvement during the season. Batsman Will Affleck was a key factor in the second half of the season with a superb performance opening the batting, anchoring the innings on numerous occasions and playing a crucial part in a number of victories. Will scored 522 runs at 63 in First Grade out of a total of 829 runs in all grades - an outstanding effort. Under the strong leadership of Shane Cassel, the Poidevin Gray performed well to finish 2 nd on the ladder, only bowing out in the QF. Cassel starred with the bat averaging over 80 while Brad Taylor led the bowling with 11 wickets. While the Green Shield had a poor tournament, the new Academy side largely made up of Under 14s, with a few old hands, starred in the PDCA B6 competition finishing with the Premiership! In a great initiative to give the boys some good tough competition against adults, the squad got off to a slow start. However the boys improved week by week, and slowly climbed the ladder to pinch the Minor Premiership at the last minute. The boys managed to pull off a hard fought victory in the Final at Binalong Oval, the critical partnership of 62 in a total of 110 coming from youngsters Tait Bensemann and Matt Ward. The performances of the PG and B6 augur well for the future as the Club continues to build. The last few years have provided a good platform for the club to progress to achieve its goals top 6 Club Championship each year, serious end of year finalist contender in First Grade, regular producer of talent for NSW representation, in each junior age group, and in the senior NSW squad and, on occasion, even the national team. To achieve these goals, we need to continue to improve, to retain the vast majority of players of all ages including those coming though the new Academy from the powerful Parramatta District Cricket Association production line. We also need to be successful with selective recruitment of senior players who can contribute to our culture and provide mentoring to which players will be receptive. 6

Congratulations to Sean Abbott, a Baulkham Hills/Parramatta junior, who achieved national honours during the season, making his Australian debut in T20 and One Day International formats. The world is Sean s oyster and we hope to see him back in Two Blues colours one day soon. Sean attended this season s Legends Luncheon and indicated that this may be not too far away, saying that Parramatta had helped him on the way up and that he would like to return the favour. This club takes great pride in Sean s achievements and the part it had in helping Sean along his way. Editor s Note: Just prior to printing Sean has announced that he will be turning out for Parramatta in , exciting news!! 7

The Cumberland Medal A great initiative by the senior player Leadership Group has been to strike a new medal for the Players Player of the year. The Cumberland Medal was the obvious name, giving the award the desired prestige, and the link to our great club s long history the Club was known as Central Cumberland for virtually 100 years. This year s winner is Jason Coleman, our 3 rd Grade skipper and assistant Coach. Jason is a most deserving winner of the first Cumberland Medal, having performed outstandingly well on a personal level by taking 40 wickets and scoring 250 runs. However Jason s contribution far exceeded his personal statistics, with his astute captaincy, leadership and development of the young players under his care, and the injection of energy and enthusiasm he provided to the club as Assistant Coach. The Medal complements the Bill Anderson Memorial Trophy awarded annually which Jason also won this year. Jason s recently announced promotion to club Coach for the coming year is very well deserved. 8

Richie Benaud - Reflections Richie has been a towering figure in Australian, and Parramatta Cricket. A self-described Parramatta boy Richie went to primary school at Burnside Public, where Lou taught, then to Parramatta High. He followed his father Lou to Central Cumberland, playing First Grade at age 16 and soon progressing to play for NSW and Australia. Richie became a Life Member of our Club and remained proud of his roots. He wrote that he looked up the scores of the club every Sunday morning. Richie has often been described as the most influential figure in Australian Cricket since Bradman. I think Richie's probably made the biggest contribution than any other cricketer in the last 50 years... He's been the perfect foil for any young child, any commentator, any cricketer. He never put a foot wrong, Richie, on or off the field. Richie s great mate Bill Lawry, speaking in a 2007 tribute video We anticipated that Richie would be with us for many years yet. His seemingly sudden departure leaves a gaping hole. Richie s previously robust health took a downturn following his car accident in the much loved Sunbeam Alpine 12 months earlier. Further health issues were detected, in particular melanoma, and from which he never recovered. Richie never wore a hat during his playing days and the sun took its toll. Richie advised all young players to always wear a hat. Until the current season, Richie had attended each and every annual luncheon, without charge, since they commenced ten years ago, almost always with Daphne. Together, Richie and Daphne were marvellous supporters of our Club. Richie was a member of many tightly knit teams. None closer than the team formed by Rich and Daph. Our sympathies to Daphne and our gratitude too for the support she gave Richie for some 50 years, and for the support she gave to our Club along with Richie. Richie consented to become the Club s #1 Ticketholder, and to encourage membership of the new True Blues Supporters Club, he personally signed the invitation. I vividly recall Richie s attention to detail in getting the Invitation exactly right in form, grammar and punctuation swapping versions with him at 6:30AM on the morning of the Luncheon when the True Blues was launched. Richie eschewed personal recognition a somewhat surprising trait for someone with such a media profile around the world. My brother Ian spotted that Richie s baggy green was for sale at a cricket auction. When I asked Richie if it was really his, he simply replied probably but why would you want that old thing When approached about re-establishing his Cricket NSW Life Membership - returned in support of brother John after the ripple heeled boots incident of the late 1960s (how crazy was that in hindsight) - Richie simply replied No thank you, I m perfectly happy exactly the way things are. Why was Richie never awarded Australian Honours? Richie signed innumerable bats, photos, cricket balls, bottles of wine and more to assist the Club s fund raising efforts. 9

He thoroughly enjoyed old mates from Cumberland and from Parramatta High such as Wilf Ewens, Harold Goodwin and Doug Milner, together with Alan Cramond and others when attending our events. Richie s connection with Central Cumberland and Parramatta was a family affair, so far stretching to 80 years since Lou Benaud made his debut. Lou was an outstanding leg spinner and tireless worker. Mother Irene participated, contributing to afternoon teas, and feeding the many boys who played cricket around the Benaud Family Home at Sutherland Road North Parramatta. Younger brother John followed, captaining NSW and reaching the level of Test Cricket. John returned the Cumberland around 1980 for 2 years to captain the side, then in a re-building phase, and is still providing valuable assistance to the club today. Richie was always keen to honour the family connection. When approached about naming the practice nets at Old Kings, he was most comfortable with the suggestion of The Benaud Nets, recognising the family as a whole. When approached about a perpetual trophy for the annual match Parramatta vs Manly to be named the Benaud Miller Shield, he replied isn t there enough of the Benaud name? He approved of the Gould Trophy as a far more appealing name to him given Langdon Gould s connection with Manly, and the Gould Family s deep history with Central Cumberland. Richie became a brilliant Test Match Captain, playing an attacking brand of cricket that revitalised the game after the dour 1950s. The historic first Tied Test against the West Indies in 1961 remains testament to Richie s Captaincy. Richie s development as a captain must have received encouragement from the CUMBOs having been appointed Captain in 1954 at a young age under the watchful eye of Ron James. Richie of course also matured into a brilliant leg spinner. He joined a line of great Australian leg spinners from Grimmett to O Reilly and much is reported about the influence O Reilly may have had. CUMBOs can be proud that Richie s father Lou had a profound influence, and perhaps also following in the footsteps of NSW Leg Spinner and CUMBO great Jack Treanor assisted Richie s development. Richie wanted a small funeral. Only 20 people were invited to the service led by Brian Booth. A select group of about 100 cricket luminaries were invited to the wake held at the Australian Golf Club. Richie had been hitting some balls at the Golf Club when he had the accident in the Sunbeam on his way home. Our Club was honoured to be included amongst those invited, including Doug Walters, Harold Goodwin, Wilf Ewens, Alan Cramond and myself. When Wes Gould, past President and member of the legendary CCDCC Gould family, passed away, Richie wrote a marvellous letter to the Gould Family, which he closed by saying that he would raise a glass for Wes. About 150 guests at the Inaugural Cumberland Medal raised a glass to Richie in a fitting tribute. 10

Following Richie s passing, Parramatta City Council passed a Resolution to investigate the potential for a turf wicket at Richie Benaud Oval, and to investigate the potential for Richie Benaud Museum in Parramatta. We are optimistic that some parts of the Resolution at least will reach fruition and provide lasting benefit to the Club and to Parramatta City into the future, in Richie s honour. Phillip Hughes The tragic accident affecting a talented young cricketer such as Philip Hughes who, surely bound for selection in the next Test team, was struck by a bouncer at the SCG and never recovered. This tragedy cast a pall over the pre-christmas period. The national outpouring of grief was most appropriate, with a memorable funeral and wake at Phillip s home town of Macksville, bats left out in front of doorways all around the world in remembrance, and Phillip s score when tragedy struck of 63 not out being recognised in matches around the globe. Phillip at one point looked likely to play his Grade Cricket with Parramatta before ultimately choosing Western Suburbs, attracted to Wests by the presence of Michael Clarke. By sheer coincidence, Parramatta was playing Western Suburbs at Old Kings Oval at the time of the accident. Michael Clarke, who by now had become Australian Captain, was planning a return to Test Cricket from injury. The first step in his comeback was intended to be batting in the First Grade that very match on the second Saturday. A furore erupted when, to ensure Michael had the opportunity to bat, Wests lost the toss, batted first, and declared at 0/17 on Day 1. Parramatta then batted and, naturally enough, established a solid lead, however before Day 2, the appalling accident to Phillip Hughes caused the cancellation of the whole Grade round. We confirm our condolences extended at the time to the Hughes Family and to Western Suburbs on the loss of such a popular and successful young cricketer. 11

The Lou Benaud Cup: Bradman Oval On a brighter note, the Parramatta Green Shield Squad launched their campaign with an impressive victory over Penrith in the Lou Benaud Cup. Architect of the event John Benaud took the opportunity to present a token of appreciation to long serving Umpire Arthur Watson who has stood in each match over the 5 years it has been running. Unfortunately, Penrith turned the tables when the competition proper began, finishing as minor premiers while the Parra Greenies were unable to build on their good start and had a very poor Green Shield Series finishing bottom. Substantial changes have been made for the coming season including the re- launch of the Jaycar Junior Blues to form the. JAYCAR Parramatta Cricket Academy Headed up by past Parramatta First Grader Paul Calvert and experienced campaigner Matt Roughan the Parramatta Academy will be the vehicle for the development of future stars for Parramatta, NSW and Australia. Paul Calvert will coach, and Matt Roughan will manage the Green Shield next season, to be supported by Luke McNaught. We are confident this will and provide a strong link between the Academy and the playing group and result in a return to the strong Green Shield performances to which we are accustomed. 12

Teams of the Decade, 1950s and 1960s marked the 50 th Anniversary of 1964/65 First and Third Grade Premierships and we celebrated the occasion by announcing its Teams of the Decade for the 1950s and 1960s. Announcement of the teams took place at a function on 27 March 2015 headlined by the great West Indian Brian Lara, and attended by Test Legends Doug Walters, John Benaud and Alan Davidson, along with Lara, Sri Lankan Test star Russel Arnold (a member of the Parra Coaching team) and Greg Dyer, ex Aussie Test Wicket Keeper currently General Manager of Parramatta City Council. The event was also attended by new International and Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year Sean Abbott, as well as International scorer Christine Bennison and future Test Umpire Greg Davidson, both Parra Life Members. The 1950s Team of the decade was selected by a prominent member of that golden era, Wilf Ewens. During the 50s, Central Cumberland made three Finals. Wilf was one of the leading batsmen of the time, ultimately scoring 5,437 runs for the Two Blues. Wilf is eminently qualified to select the team from his first-hand knowledge of players such as Ron James (NSW Captain), new star Richie Benaud, NSW leg spinner Jack Treanor, and prolific run scorer Bert Alderson, until recently the highest ever run scorer in First Grade Cricket. Wilf was assisted by Club Historian Tom Wood. The selected Team of the 1950s is: 1. Bert Alderson 2. - Bruce Ritchie 3. - Wilfrid Ewens 4. - Richie Benaud 5. - Ron James (captain) 6. - Norm Lockhart 7. - Walter Cornock 8. - Greg Beisler 9. - Colin Barr 10. -Jack Treanor 11. Ron Mulock 12. Leo Smith 13

John Benaud was the ideal person to select the Team of the 1960 s. A Test Batsman in his own right, NSW Captain, and Australian Selector, JB consulted other players of this second consecutive golden decade, where the First Grade Team won the Premiership in 1964/65 and made two other Finals. This all-star Merit side contained 3 current Test stars in Richie and Joh Benaud and Doug Walters, all in their pomp. John Benaud still holds the First Grade batting aggregate record of 835 for the Club, while Doug Walters still holds the First Grade Batting Average record of Bruce Neill threatened JB s record and went on to play first class cricket for Tasmania. Tom Wood also threatened the record. Harold Goodwin imposed himself on many games in memorable dashing fashion while the Aitken brothers completed a dominating spin attack. Rob Aitken holds the club record of 947 wickets in all grades, 700 in First Grade, records which may never be broken. Rob Aitken also scored 7609 runs. John Aitken eventually took 626 wickets in all grades and scored 8377 runs in an amazing all round performance. The selected team is: 1. Bruce Neill 2. Harold Goodwin 3. Richie Benaud (captain) 4. Doug Walters 5. Bert Alderson 6. John Benaud 7. John Aitken 8. Greg Beisler 9. Robert Aitken 10. -Dave Watson 11. Ron Mulock 12. Tom Wood Numerous members of the selected Merit sides, the 1964/65 First Grade Premiers and the 1964/65 Third Grade Premiers were present on the day to complete a great celebration of the 50 th Anniversary of the First and Third Grade Premierships where 93 year old Third Grade Captain Alan Cramond graced us with his presence, and 89 year old Stan Teale, still in rude good health, flew from Adelaide for the occasion. We thank Wilf Ewens and John Benaud for their great contributions in selecting these Merit Teams, along with Club Historian Tom Wood for the provision of historical information and photographs, Peter West for the framed certificates presented to each player selected, and to Peter and Ron Wright for their tremendous work in putting on the Luncheon. 15

In conclusion, it is hard to imagine a season with more highs and lows. I suggest that the greatest tribute we could pay to Richie, would be to continue to improve our cricket, to train well and play well in the CUMBO way, and to assist the club of the Benaud Family to continue its progress to fulfill its potential as one of the very best clubs in Sydney and to develop more players capable of playing cricket for NSW and Australia. Our grand old club is edging closer to 200 years old. May it continue to honour the Benaud Tradition for the next 200 years as well. Yours in Cricket, Greg Monaghan President 19

ANZAC Commemoration 2015 marked the 100 th Anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli and Parramatta/Central Cumberland, looked back with great pride on the patriotism and bravery displayed by many of its young playing members 100 years ago who answered the call of duty and joined the Australian Armed Forces to fight in the Great War World War 1 which raged from and during which the battlefields took a tremendous casualty toll on the participants. The Cumberland Club Management Committee of the day, in tune with society at large and the spirit of the times, actively encouraged Parramatta s cricketers without encumbrances, who were physically fit, to offer their services for the defence of the Empire. Indeed the Committee s campaign of encouragement under the slogan of Play the Game Change Your Bat for a Rifle Play the game in Khaki was such a rallying point that many players flocked to enlist and the subsequent reduction in playing members led to Cumberland readily suspending its participation in the New South Wales Cricket Association s Grade competition between 1915/16 and 1918/19. The Parramatta District Cricket Club of 2015 is understandably proud of the sacrifices of their ANZAC forbears and affords them a place of honour in the history of the club. Here is a tribute listing the names of the Cumbos of World War 1 - Lest we Forget The Club acknowledges the great work by Historian Tom Wood in preparing this tribute and Deputy President Peter West in preparing this digital display. 20

Treasurer s Report [T. Wood] Season 2014/15 At the end of the 2014/15 Financial Year the Parramatta District Cricket Club remains in a sound fiscal position, once again the club was able to meet all its operational expenses and commitments keeping these within the scope of its planned budgetary forecasts this ensures that the club sits comfortably placed to meet its prospective monetary commitments relating to the oncoming 2015/16 season. The historical club continues to owe a great deal of appreciation to its first-class group of Sponsors who s support provides an ongoing community benefit by materially helping the PDCC to provide a vehicle for local cricketers to play in NSW s Premier competition and to continue to maintain its comprehensive Junior Development Program. Major Sponsor Parramatta Leagues now have completed 32 straight seasons as our principal financial benefactor and we thank Steve Sharp and his fellow Board Members for their wonderful support; Jaycar Electronics have been the champions of our Junior Developments activities for several years; the Rose and Crown Hotel (incidentally founded in the same year as the Parramatta DCC 1843) and E Security have also contributed substantially to the welfare of the PDCC and a new sponsor Solaft has recently come on board. In House fund-raisers the Annual Sporting Lunch (that this season featured the great West Indian Test batsman Brian Lara) and the popular Doug Walters Golf Classic are great functions that assist the club s networking and generate funds towards covering the club s financial obligations. Additionally the financial support supplied by both Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW is substantial and a life blood to all grade clubs. Parramatta District Cricket Club concluded the 30 th June 2015 financial year with a cashbook balance of $88,863 [2013/14 - $71,210] outstanding 2014/15 expenditures for the Junior Development Program and Merrylands Oval hire are still to be met. 2015/16 is shaping as an exciting season for Parramatta and we all look forward to enjoying the enduring support of our players, sponsors and members. 26 From the Past Parramatta (Central Cumberland) District Cricket Club {By Tom Wood Club Historian} o The sad passing of legendary former Test and Central Cumberland captain Richie Benaud triggered the thought of advising the younger members of the club as to the identify and playing history of other Internationals who have also worn the Two-Blues some have been active Test or One Day players during their playing days with our club, whilst others have achieved this honour before or after their time at Parramatta the list shows that current players are indeed walking in the footsteps some really fine cricketers and that they should be proud of this aspect of their club s past. The table below refers to the players careers at Parramatta and not their International performances. Name Type International Level Reached Period at Parramatta Francis A. 27 o The list of the Top 12 Century makers in First Grade for the Parramatta District Cricket Club is as Follows:- Batsman Number of 1st Grade Highest Score Centuries 1. Lesley Walter Pye Kevin Douglas Walters * 3. Harold Mudgee Cranney Barclay Wallace Farquhar Edgar Lloyd Waddy Raymond Curtis Rowe Jack Fitzpatrick Michael Andrew Wood 9 165* 9. Rev. Ernest F. Waddy Timothy McMahon Leonard Leabeater Albert Bert Alderson o An article in the Evening News Tuesday 11th May 1909 makes interesting reading The Central Cumberland Cricket Club is somewhat agitated over a proposal to be submitted at the next meeting of the New South Wales Cricket Association to amalgamate the Parramatta club with the Burwood First grade team, in order to have one less team in the First Grade Competition. The proposal is bound to be warmly opposed in Parramatta, and a meeting of the members of the Central Cumberland has been called to consider the matter. It is known for certain that many of the Parramatta cricketers will decline to make Burwood their headquarters. The movement is a peculiar one, seeing the strength of the Central Cumberland Club, its seniority, and the fact that it possesses a ground second to no other club. o One of the most appealing aspects of the great game of cricket part of its ability to get you hooked is its unpredictability, games can appear to be proceeding down an obvious path and the result can look a forgone conclusion and then an individual or collective deed completely tips the expected result on its ear!! A couple of illustrations from Parramatta s past illustrates this point beautifully In a Fourth Grade fixture against Northern Districts at Coleman Oval in Parramatta Park NDs batted first and man-handled the Parramatta attack to wrack up an imposing declared in reply Parra was calling for the smelling salts at a rocky 5-98 then it changed when talented all-rounder John Mahoney (117*) and Rohan Sajdeh (63) came together to launch a match-winning 6th wicket partnership of 132 that enabled the Two-Blues to overhaul the target by making The opponent on this occasion was once again Northern Districts in a Second Grade match in 1999/00 Parramatta had first use of the willow and did it well rattling up a hefty 332 but at the Tea break on the second day NDs were in total command and Parramatta appeared to be floundering in the field under the blitz then after the interval fast bowler Mark C. Ward came out breathing fire and with an attitude that it isn t over to the Cock crows to blast the NDs batting line-up to pieces, in the process he grabbed seven wickets and delivered victory to Parramatta. 27

o As the Club s next iteration of the Parramatta Club s Junior Development Programme is scheduled to commence in June August 2015 under the proprietorship of ex first grade batsman Paul Calvert and Matt Roughan, it is interesting to note that the Parramatta Club has long delved into the coaching and development of its local junior cricketers with sessions of this nature dating as far back as the late 1930s. Indeed one of Australia s leading cricketers of his time Ron James was very interested in investing time in and around his first-class and first grade commitments in helping to improve the playing standards of local Parramatta juniors the attached article from the Argus Newspaper on 12th October 1949 bears testimony to his activities in this area:- 28

o Former champion Central Cumberland all-rounder and local Church Street Parramatta Pharmacist Leslie Walter Pye was not just an outstanding cricketer, but he was also a pioneer motorist. When motoring in Australia was very much in its infancy Pye was one of the best drivers. In 1910 he won the Goulburn to Sydney and Return reliability competition, and in 1912 was awarded the Automobile Club s Trophy for the best record in all club events. A specialist in hill climbing, he remained unbeaten for three years in this class of event he drove a big powerful Vauxhall car which was reportedly the envy of his competitors of the era. The picture above shows Les Pye on a family drive outside his Alice Street Harris Park home accompanied by his wife and child. o A quote from an article Richie Benaud wrote on Cumberland leg-spinner Jack Treanor in the Sporting Life October 1955 after Treanor made his Sheffield Shield debut against Queensland aged 31 years and captured a hat-trick amongst his eight wickets for the match. It raises the view of many experts that most slow bowlers reach their peak in their late twenties or early thirties patience is the operative word for budding spinners. 29

o Since the commencement of the Sydney First Grade Competition in 1893/94 there has been just 26 instances of two or more Parramatta (Cumberland) batsmen scoring a century in the same innings, the list of these performances is set out below: /96 v. 32 2014/15 OBITUARIES [By T. Wood Club Historian] The Committee and Members of the Parramatta District Cricket Club extend their sincere condolences to the relatives of the following ex club members:- Max Godfrey The ranks of the two-blue army of ex Parramatta (Cumberland) players was depleted in August 2014 with the passing of the popular Max Godfrey competitive campaigner on the field, but generally with a smile on his face who had been suffering from ill health in more recent times. Max Godfrey was a pocket-sized gutsy right-handed opening batsman he generally batted in an attacking vein and his innings tended to be naturally free scoring. Max was yet another Cumberland player to excel in another sport having played as a half-back for Western Suburbs in first grade Rugby League and also officiated as a linesman in Rugby League Test matches. He commenced with Cumberland in Third grade in the 1956/57 season and continued turn out for the club until 1966/67 holding the office of Second grade captain His First grade debut occurred in 1960/61and he played at regular intervals in this side between that season and 1965/66 in all this jovial and likeable player scored in the 1sts the highlights being topping the batting aggregate with in 1962/63 and a rousing 114 on a doubtful Mosman oval wicket in 1961/62, unfortunately soon after which he contacted hepatitis and was forced to miss most of the season. In his last couple of seasons he mainly played in the 2 nd eleven. Grade Runs Highest Score Averages Catches Third grade * Second grade 2, First grade Total 3, Ronald Joseph Mulock. In September 2014 the passing of Ron Mulock saw the Club lose one more former player from the golden era of the 1950s / 60s, and the Club is saddened to by the loss of this great supporter who maintained a link with it right to the end as a Vice-President and attendee at the Annual Sporting Luncheons. Ron Mulock was another Cumberland player who achieved great success in public life and on the sporting field. His playing career commenced with Central Cumberland in the 1955/56 and played through to the 1962/63 season. During this period he proved to be a very accomplished right-arm medium-pace swing bowler, and his skill at exploiting the new ball yielded him a harvest of wickets in both 1 st and 2 nd grade. Ron s bowling statistics reveal an outstanding career at Cumberland * 1st grade * 2 nd grade Batting wasn t his forte, as shown by his 1 st grade stats The undoubted career highlight was the 1959/60 season when Ron was the leading wicket-taker in the entire Sydney 1 st grade competition That season he shared a wonderful new ball partnership with the young fast bowler 32

Dave Watson, who was to tragically die in a car accident in February The Central Cumberland Annual Report quoted The highlight of the season was the grand performances of Ron Mulock and Dave Watson. Between them these two opening bowlers took 89 wickets at less than 14 runs each. Ron and Dave combined particularly well, each a grand foil for the other. In his professional life Ron Mulock was a partner in a Penrith based Law firm with former Cumberland 1 st grade wicket-keeper Doug Timmins. But in 1971 he entered the realm of state politics as the Labor member for Nepean (1971/73), member for Penrith (1973/81) and member for St. Marys 1981 to his 1988 retirement. In a sterling political career he held a large array of ministerial portfolios Justice (1976/78), Housing (1977/78), Mineral Resources (1978/ 81), Education (1981/84), Health (1984/86), Transport (1986/87) and NSW Attorney General (1987/88). In addition to these ministerial roles, Ronal Mulock became Deputy Premier in February 1984 and remained in that position until the fall of the Unsworth government in March Born 6th October 1930 and died 10th April Richie Benaud Icon is a much overused word these days but in the case of Richie Benaud it was an apt title to bestow upon him he was without doubt an iconic figure to the Parramatta District Cricket Club and to the cricket world at large. To sports fans across Australia Richie was household name, even non cricket lovers instantly recognized the white-haired gentleman, in the beige sports jacket with the distinctive voice and turn of phrase, such was his fame as a television Sports Presenter face & voice of summer to cricket tragics. But to the Parramatta District Cricket Club he represented its most celebrated and applauded figure a true blue Parramatta boy growing up in the district as a fledgling cricketer rising from Burnside Primary School and Parramatta High School cricket teams, honing his skills in the backyard of his family home in Sutherland Road North Parramatta under the watchful eye of his Father Lou (just a stone s throw from the nearby oval that now bears his name) to ultimately reach the exalted post of Australian Test captain. Richie retained his interest in the welfare of the club from which he launched his outstanding career holding the No.1 Membership Ticket in the True Blues Supporters club and readily gave his time to headline the annual Sporting Luncheon fund-raiser his family connections with the club dated back to the 1920s when his talented leg-spinning father Lou first appeared in the two-blue colours, whilst Richie and younger sibling John both starred for Cumberland and played Test cricket. Acknowledged as one of Australia s greatest ever all-rounders a gifted leg-spinner, swashbuckling batsman and splendid fieldsman Richie earned his highest praises as a Test captain ranked amongst Australia s best ever due to his shrewd tactics and attacking flair. His illustrious career has been well documented in many publications, but a summary of his statistics and achievements bare testament to his standing in the cricket world:- - Statistics: Tests 63 matches, 2, (H.S. 122), (B.B 7/72). Total First-class 11, (H.S. 187), (B.B. 7/18) For NSW 4, (H.S. 158), (B.B. 7/18) - Honours: Captain of New South Wales in Sheffield Shield 1955/56 to 1963/64 (33 matches) Captain of Australia in Tests 1958/ /64 (28 matches) 33

Awarded O.B.E Inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2007 Included as one of Wisden s Five Cricketers of the Year In 1944/45 at 14 years of age Richie first appeared in the Central Cumberland A.W. Green Shield team and he continued in this team until 1946/47 his all-round ability confirmed with 666 runs (H.S. 104) and 99 wickets (B.B. 5/8 & 8/32 v. Wests), he also captained the side 1945/47. His full grade career with Parramatta (Cumberland) District Cricket Club spanned the seasons 1945/46 to 1967/68 during which he scored 5, (H.S. 160*), captured (B.B. 8/36) and snapped up 76 catches 12 centuries, 30 half-centuries and 17 5 wicket hauls. It all started in earnest in 1945/46 when Richie debuted in Third grade compiling (H.S. 79) and securing and after good early season form in the Thirds in 1946/47 he was elevated into First grade on 26th October 1946 just 20 days after his 16th birthday this produced the unique feat of becoming a team-mate of his father Lou in this premier grade of cricket. Over the ensuing seasons he secured his first grade spot and became more prolific in his performances notching his initial First grade century (160* v. Gordon) and first 5 wicket bag (5/81 v. Waverley) in 1949/50) he had previously made his first-class debut for NSW at 18 years of age on 31st December 1948 and a Test debut followed in 1951/52 v. West Indies. In 1953/54 Ron James stepped down from the captaincy of Cumberland s First grade team to enable Richie to gain experience skippering a team of this level, and further his future claims for leadership of the NSW State team. The plan bore fruit and in 1958/59 Richie Benaud became Australia s Test captain in the home Ashes Series against England. 1961/62 saw younger brother John the dashing batsman and spinner join his illustrious older sibling in the Cumberland Firsts they played together in the 1964/65 and 1965/66 First grade Finals winning the premiership in 1964/65; Richie wound-up his career with the Bumble-Bees in 1967/68 as one of only four all-rounders to have scored 5,000+ runs and taken 300+ wickets in First grade for the Parramatta club. The Benaud family shared other Parramatta honours Richie and Lou the only father and son to have captured 300+ wickets in First grade Richie, John and Lou being member of a very small band of father and sons to have captained Parramatta in First grade. Below is a picture of the Cumberland 1953/54 Team Richie Benaud s first tilt as Captain:- Farewell to Richie Benaud a Parramatta All Time Great!! 34

Obituary of Paul Murphy (by. T.Wood) The Club was saddened by the very recent death of a young man Paul Murphy 6th June 2015 at just 32 years of age - who had been a promising player as a teenager, representing Parramatta in both A.W. Green Shield and also the lower grade ranks. As a tall, quiet and polite youngster hailing from the Kings Langley Club where he was coached by Club President Greg Monaghan Paul first represented Parramatta in the 1998/99 Green Shield team that reached the Semi-Final of this coveted Under 16 competition, in which he performed steadily as an energetic medium-fast opening bowler securing 9 an impressive (best 3/43 v. Penrith). Paul entered the grade scene in 1999/00 playing Fifth grade with considerable success the promising young paceman captured the team s highest wicket haul with (best 4/29 v. Balmain) and earned praise for his tight, accurate pace bowling and quality outfielding from his then skipper John JA Aitken. He followed up in 2000/01 with further good Fifth grade form early in the season and won promotion to Fourth and his wholehearted efforts with the new ball helped his side qualify for the Semi-Finals his contribution being (best 3/17 v. Sydney University). 2001/02 saw Paul play a solitary Third grade match snaring 2/60 (19 overs) prior to departing the club. A fast bowler of genuine potential in his brief grade career he made (H.S. 29) and grabbed (B.B.- 4/29) accuracy was his byword as illustrated by the fact that each of the 370 overs he delivered for the two-blues only cost an average of 2.30 runs. 35

A RICH MEMORY By John Benaud There were 14 years between us. In the 1930s, our loving parents Lou and Rene had other things on their minds, in particular negotiating the aftermath of the Great Depression, and, confronting the prospect of World War II. Not much fun there. But how lucky I was, because that age gap offered me the good fortune of a second father figure, and, a gold mine of wisdom. From beyond the family there was the occasional how s your father moment. When Rich, by then ill, was inducted into the Sydney Cricket Ground Media Hall Of Honour, Daphne generously offered me a seat at her table. To my right, a concerned fellow guest inquired about Rich s health, asking: How s Dad? Before I could respond, his head inclined in the direction of Daphne, and: How s Mum coping? On the phone to Rich that night there were gales of laughter. Rich was a great mentor to many, and to me saved me from myself more than a few times. When fielding the odd JB light-bulb moment he would fix me with steady blue eyes, then offer the querulous raised left eyebrow, and, after a pause, advise: Never take yourself too seriously. A few words for Rich: determined, meticulous and spontaneous. We can add generous, agricultural and inspirational. Would you believe preacher? Incomprehensible is another. When I was five and he 19 he used to walk me up to the little red phone box at the top of Sutherland Road, where, in the backyard at No.5 he had developed his great love for cricket. He used to park me outside the box, on a low brick fence, to play a word game while he phoned a friend, or three. Over time, phonically speaking, I perfected a big word in com pre hens ible. I never did ask Rich why he chose that particular word to advance my vocabulary. But, judging by some of the events on, and off sporting fields these days I think it fair to say that even in 1949 he had developed the instinct for which he became famous being ahead of the game. Determined - If you ever engaged Rich on a ticklish topic you needed to closely monitor his bottom lip. The very readable Ray Robinson, who paid homage to Australia s Test cricket captains in On Top Down Under, nailed it: If events demanded firm correction, Richie s lower lip jutted farther out like a tramcar s step. You could measure how well correctives were working by the way it retracted until a dragonfly could no longer have alighted on it. Meticulous - His attention to detail, legendary, was possibly a by-product of a cricket captaincy must-do, get the field right. Rich was the No.1 ticketholder at his Sydney grade club Cumberland, now Parramatta, and, with Doug Walters, the No.2 ticketholder, was ever happy to entertain full houses at the Annual Legends Lunches. When Rich had to miss the last one it disappointed a former Cumberland swing bowler named John Chadban. Over a two-beer toast to Rich in absentia John, with raucous good humour, recalled his greatest moment : It was my First Grade debut, the great Richie Benaud my captain! He placed me at square-leg, but I had a wandering habit never checked during my early, less intense career path in the up-country Dungog dairy farming community. After reminding me several times of my nomadic ways with a wave of the hand and eventually a frown, in the sixth over of the day Richie stopped the bowler mid-run, vacated first slip and strolled over to me. He gently placed his hands on my shoulders, shepherded me into the correct position, scraped a hole in the turf with his sprigs, and said, There! I never wandered again. Spontaneous - In , when Rich became captain of Australia, he was accused of bringing too much emotion to the game, backslapping and hugging, lowering cricketers to the level of soccer players. After that 4-0 series win, The Ashes regained, as a 15 th birthday present Rich took me in the Holden with the green side-flash to the Sydney Sports Ground to see the NSW soccer team play one from Costa Rica. Watch Leo Baumgartner, he said, and, Ron Lord, what a goalkeeper! NSW won 6-1. Baumgartner scored two goals, once rattled the crossbar with a thunderous shot from way out, and my big brother was up out of his seat, arms raised, hallelujah moments, face ablaze with absolute joy. Photographers would snap the same reaction a couple of years later when Rich bowled Peter May around his legs to plot a winning course in the Fourth Test at Old Trafford. Agricultural - Rich knew how to plant a seed to get a positive outcome. Subliminal advertising they call it today. Sometimes on Saturday nights he d suggest I accompany him to a telecommunications centre in the city where he d file copy to England, via a telex operator. I heard the pounding clickety-clack of the teleprinter machines, 37

watched the news being printed before my eyes. I was captivated. Before you could say Get your late final extra I had started work as a copy boy on Rich s newspaper, The Sun. And not once had he suggested I should make my career in newspapers. Inspirational - To play in a cricket team captained by Rich was perpetual work experience, enjoyable and never boring. Cricket fees? At Cumberland they were the entrance money to the greatest cricket show on earth. He was the master of mind games. He could manage his men and also manage the opponent. And, more often than not, he managed the outcome of the game. Generous - When he returned from the Ashes tour in 1953 he had in his luggage trunk about 50 brand new Stuart Surridge bats to satisfy orders for the new season from fellow cricketers. A similar offer in 1961 enticed Cumberland s opening bowler Ron Mulock, a No.11 with no batting talent to boast about, to express an interest in a new blade. Cue sniggering team-mates. Rich offered Ron a deal, which in effect was a rebuke to the doubters a free bat for Ron if he could make 75 runs in the season. Alas, Ron made only 63, but his 14 (including a six) on a wet pitch in the final round was so good and valuable that Rich decided they should count double. Congratulations Ron Preacher? - Of course not. Rich practised cricket more than religion but he loved to spread the cricket gospel according to Lou: love the game, respect the spirit. The scene is Parramatta Railway Station, a Friday evening in September 1962, Ted Dexter s Englishmen soon due Down Under to try to wrest back the Ashes. Hullo, is that Richie Benaud the Australian captain boarding the Mudgee Mail? Sure is. Next day he captains Cumberland in a match against faraway Binnaway, manned by the pick of the district s wheat farmers; plays another match the next day, then catches the train back. In 2015, take a few seconds to digest that an Australian captain on the eve of a red-hot Ashes challenge, prepared to play a couple of social matches in the outback. The memory of a little boy, five going on 10, carefree at Sutherland Road, is more shadowy than sharp about brother Rich. The arrival of the baker s horse and cart and fresh bread, buttered crust to follow now that was memorable. I knew my big brother played cricket, but so what? And, dressed in his double-breasted suit, he d go off to work in an office in the big city I d not yet seen. Memory flashes occur: Rich at the front door, face bruised black and blue, eyes swollen, hit by a bumper at the MCG, Rene s gasp of concern; after a hit in the mouth against South Africa, watching him that night in our little bedroom, with swollen lips sucking on a straw from a bowl of long soup fetched by the next door neighbour from the Green Mill café. Sutherland Road North Parramatta was the family home for about 60 years and Rich was ever there, living, visiting, or in spirit. There was the celebrity chef moment. Home from England in 1953, first time out of Australia, mind expanded, he arrived at No.5 and announced to Rene he would be cooking dinner, an international dish called Hungarian Goulash. Over the washing up there was a short review, and it was agreed Rene s roast dinners were a better bet. Disturbed by the smallness of Rene s kitchen Rich insisted on cupboard renovations, drew a plan, announced his curriculum vitae as woodwork lessons at Parramatta High, appointed me as his apprentice, and, set to work with a saw, hammer and nails. Work was intermittent and usually accompanied by a fine film of red cedar sawdust. After three weeks Lou called in the experts, who agreed with the design but questioned the workmanship. Benaud Brothers Kitchens wasn t a goer. About then, Lou took me to my first Test match and I saw my big brother playing for Australia, facing a Tyson called Typhoon at the SCG in 1956 planted a seed. When I played my first Test in Adelaide 16 years later Rich was a journalist reporting on play. Lou was pretty happy about that, sort of Benaud & Co. Rich was the champion in the truest sense of the word, and a gentleman too, a combination not often seen in top level sport these days. He will be missed by zillions. 39 RICHIE BENAUD MARVELLOUS MEMORIES From a French maritime heritage, emerged a great Australian cricketer and commentator - renowned for élan. On his mother's side came the British ethos... that of the true gentle man; where his word was his bond and his standards were high, he's left us now, to join Miller and Bradman, in the fanciful ether of the sky. "Aah... *marvellous ** memories" For Daphne, the Benaud family and friends By Bob McMillan [Poet Laureate Parramatta District Cricket Club] * "marvellous" - a hallmark word from Richie's cricket commentaries ** "memories" - Richie's favourite piece of music from Andrew Lloyd Webber 39

Dr. Wilfrid. W. Ewens. BA. MEd. PhD. Dip.PE. FACHPER. EDUCATION & SPORTS SCIENCE CONSULTANT RICHIE BENAUD Richie and I go back 70 years, playing with the Rangers Club C grade team, Parramatta High School and eventually with CCDCC. I enjoyed playing with Richie, because his personality seemed to enthuse you to strive to higher levels. Richie, I suspect modeled his approach, to cricket, on his hero Keith Miller, A flamboyant confident and aggressive approach that became his trademark. The unbuttoned shirt the naked head, the exuberance for the challenge, all typified the persona, Richie Benaud, a far cry from the regimented approach of our early playing days. An incident in a CCDCC v Northern Districts, chronicled in Neil Mark s book Great Australian Cricket Stories], is an example of Richie s sense of the occasion. To paraphrase Neil s account; We were dismissed for 73; the scoreboard showed N.D at 2/74, Jimmy Burke, the N.D Captain, declared. [hoping for an outright win]. The official scorers called out that the scoreboard was wrong N.D. were in fact only 73. Jimmy said to Richie we ve stuffed up to which Richie replied No you haven t Burkie, it s a tie and now we can both go for the outright. I admire you, most captains would have taken the 1 st. innings points. You really have opened up the game. Jimmy was on the defensive, Richie it s your scoreboard and it was wrong. To which I pointed out that Richie had nothing to do with the scoreboard, it belonged to the Parramatta Park Trust. Richie continued to say that he had declared, to which the umpires agreed. They kept Jimmy dangling for a few more minutes. Richie said OK let s go back and walked to the wicket. After one run was scored, Jimmy said I declare, to which Richie retorted Have you checked with the scorers? The incident was one of those great episodes of our game. WILF. EWENS.. 40

AUBURN CRICKET CLUB We convey our thanks to President Ray Gentles, hardworking Secretary Mike Wood and to the Committee of the Auburn Cricket Club. It was with regret we learnt of the passing of former President David Tribolet a Sydney Cricket Stalwart. David died in April 2015, he served 21 years as Club President, and during his time at Auburn he holds the record for the Club for most matches (358) and most wickets (460) We convey our condolences to the Tribolet family in their sad loss. Our appreciation to the Auburn Club in making available Mona 3 as our home ground for Fifth Grade. It would be remiss of the Parramatta Club if we did not record our oversight in not communicating this past season an opportunity of entering a combined Tim Creer Cup side, between both Clubs. WEBSITE We encourage everyone to visit the Club Website: this facility provides a wealth of information, including player s statistics, fixtures, events etc. Early pre-season we are planning an upgrade of the site to ensure, current communication facilities are included and expanded not only to Facebook and twitter but other cricket related programs which are being developed continuously. We convey our most grateful thanks to Roz of Surgical Specialists who is currently the Clubs webmaster seven days a week combining this position with her current business commitment. 66 FIRST GRADE REPORT The Parramatta First Grade side showed significant improvement in the 2014/15 season. This season saw Alex Murphy and Paul Sullivan take charge of the coaching from outgoing coach Mark Crittenden and saw the addition of Jason Coleman to the coaching staff. The club also had a few players leave for various reasons but saw the addition of a couple of talented players in Will and Tim Affleck, from North Sydney Cricket Club. All of which were positive additions to the club and with changes in attitude and commitment from the playing group as a whole, lead to a significant improvement in club culture which was reflected in our performances throughout the season. Preseason began with early morning fitness sessions being conducted by cricket fitness legend Kevin Chevell at his gym in Penrith. This season saw the sessions opened up to a greater number of players at the club with three early morning sessions held a week, culminating in a final challenge consisting of a 5,000m row, a 10,000m row and 500 squats. This training greatly contributed to an improvement in the strength, conditioning and mental toughness of the players which participated which was reflect in each of these individuals results throughout the season. Alex Murphy and Paul Sullivan taking charge of the cricket side of the preseason saw a significant change in the format of preseason from previous years with a heavy emphasis on skill development. This was a welcome change from previous years and greatly benefited players in their preparation for the season. Two Day Competition The opening round of the 2014/15 saw a loss against Eastern Suburbs at home despite Parramatta posting a significant total of 7/329 declared. Whilst Parramatta was defeated, many positives were taken from the match with the side batting the entire day with strong performances from Brenton Cherry, falling just short of his maiden First Grade century on 96. Brenton combined with Michael Castle for a partnership of 244, with Michael shortly departing for 141. This sparked a mini collapse but the bowlers were able to push through with Shane Cassel hitting 34 off 20 balls and Scott Copperfield adding another 24 runs to the total putting the team in a good position going into day two. Unfortunately, on a batsman s wicket, we were unable to make the necessary breakthroughs in an experienced batting line-up to come away with the points. Round two saw Parramatta post another great total of 324 against UNSW with the opening batsmen, Brenton Cherry and Adam Turrell getting the team off to a great start, scoring 51 and 83 respectively. The lower order then chipped in to build a defendable total. Parramatta were able to bowl UNSW out for 268 on day two with Ben Martin taking 4/37 off 12.1 overs posting the team s first win for the season. This was a big positive for the team, helping to build confidence for both the batters and bowlers. Round three and four unfortunately saw another two losses for the team against Mosman and Hawkesbury. Round five saw the second grade Captain Raza Rizwan being promoted to the First Grade side after some amazing batting performances in Second Grade, however, this was quickly overshadowed by some unsportsmanlike behaviour by Western Suburbs in one of the most talked about days of the seasons. Western Suburbs loss the toss and were sent in to bat, surprising Parramatta by declaring at 17 and losing first innings before lunch However, as the whole cricket community were saddened by the passing of Philip Hughes, the match was abandoned as a mark of respect and to allow for everyone to remember to the great cricketer and person that Philip was. Round six saw Parramatta send Sutherland in to bat and take two early wickets to have them 2/27, however, they recovered with some good performances to set a target of 9/346 declared with the wickets shared amongst all the bowlers. Parramatta, having already posted two totals over 300 were positive in their run chase with Michael Castle scoring 78 and Scott Copperfield 46, but unfortunately the boys were not able to secure the win being bowled out for 212. This was the last two day match before the break for the one-day competition. 66

Round eleven saw the return of the two-day competition with a Saturday-Sunday match against Penrith. Nick Bertus took over the captaincy role with Michael Castle out with a dislocated thumb and Adam Turrell returned to side. Parramatta batted first with Will Affleck posting a positive 87 runs, followed by and Chris White both gaining half centuries of 56 and 69 respectively, steering the side to a total of 296. Unfortunately, the match was drawn with Parramatta unable to take the final wicket needed and Penrith completing their overs at 9/276, despite bowling from Scott Copperfield to take 3/63, Shane Cassel 2/71 and two run outs from the Affleck brothers. Brad Taylor also took his first wicket in the grade. Round twelve saw the team return to a two day win against Gordon who posted a tough target of 347. Scott Copperfield posted figures of 4/44 and Brad Taylor supporting this with 2/55 both off 18 overs. Adam Turrell and Scott also worked hard in the field taking two catches a piece. The Affleck brothers headlined the batting with Will scoring 134 and Tim 75 to drive the side to a win with one over remaining in the days play. Round thirteen was another close draw against Randwick Petersham with Parramatta again having the side 9 down at the end of play but were unlucky to not take the final wicket. The side quickly bounced back the following week with the World Cup in full force, seeing a limited overs match being played as part of the two day competition to give the First Grade side a week off in round fourteen. Parramatta secured a comfortable win at home against Campbelltown-Camden, bowling the side out in 40 overs. Brenton Cherry returned to form after a few quiet matches with a 86 run haul to help the side to a total of 232. The wickets began to fall early in Campbelltown-Camden s innings with the pace bowling from Brad Taylor (2/37) but as the day went on it was the spinners turn with Shane Cassel 3/33 and Chris White 3/27 off 10 overs each, with two run outs helping to finish the side off. The final round of season saw a local derby between Parramatta and Fairfield-Liverpool in a limited overs match to finish out the competition. Not being able to make the finals in the two day competition, the side wanted to finish the season on a positive. With some tight bowling and a large field Parramatta were able to keep Fairfield-Liverpool to 156 runs with Nick Bertus 48 leading the side to a win with four balls remaining. The tight finish meant that Parramatta finished the season with a clean sweep across all grades, a trend which is hoped to continue into the next season. Parramatta finished eleventh on the ladder, a huge improvement from the previous season and providing many positives to take into the 2015/16 season to go one better and make the finals. One Day Competition Round seven saw the start of the one-day competition against Blacktown with Parramatta proving competitive in the shorter form. Will Affleck was promoted to First Grade after scoring two centuries in Second Grade and continued this form to score 52 and steady the sides batting performance. The bowlers followed this up with Scott Copperfield s pace obviously too much for Blacktown with figures of 4/26 off 8 overs and the spinners Shane Cassel and Chris White chipping in another two wickets each, driving the side to a win before the Christmas break. Round eight brought a nail bitting finish to the second one day match with Sydney passing the 224 total with five balls to spare. Parramatta had contributions from a number of players with Scott Copperfield scoring 59 not out and Raza Rizwan 42. Scott followed up his batting with a strong bowling performance of 2/35 off 10 overs. Parramatta quickly bounced back in round nine to secure a win against Northern District with Michael Castle scoring a half century and Nick Bertus returning to form, narrowly missing out on his half century on 47. The bowlers backed this up keeping the opposition to 199, with Scott Copperfield and Michael 3/36 off 8 overs each. 67

Parramatta s one day form continued into round ten against North Sydney with the team chasing down the 182 run total in 45 overs with Nick Bertus not out on 59. Ben Martin was the stand out in bowling performances with 5/27 off 9.2 overs. Brad Taylor was promoted to First Grade on the back of consistent bowling in Second Grade. Parramatta s performances in the one day competition saw them finish fifth and play Penrith in the Qualifying Final. Unfortunately, the boys were unable to progress further being bowled out for 131, chasing a target of 195, however, the efforts and abilities shown throughout the one day competition has put the First Grade side in good stead for the 2015/16 competition. T20 Competition Round 1 of the T20 competition saw a back to Pratten Park Day with the opening match between Parramatta and Western Suburbs. Parramatta kicked off the competition with a win keeping Western Suburbs to 6/126 with Michael Castle 2/19 and Chris White 2/26 off 4 overs each. The side followed this up with Adam Turrell scoring 45 and welcoming Ben Abbott into the side with a quick fire 18 chasing down the total with one ball remaining. Parramatta having were not as fortunate backing up with the second match of the day against Penrith batting first with Nick Bertus adding 53 runs to the total of 127. Unfortunately, despite two wickets a piece for Shane Cassel and Michael Castle, Parramatta were unable to make the breakthrough of opener P Jackson (first name?) who helped Penrith race to win with an unbeaten 75 runs. The First Grade continued into the second day of the T20 competition with another loss to Bankstown being bowled out for 111 and unable to take the necessary wickets in the field. This was followed by a short break in the day before the final round of the competition with Parramatta again going down to Northern District, despite a positive 42 from Nick Bertus and James Parkinson taking 2/36 off 4 overs. While the First Grade side were unsuccessful in making the finals in the T20 competition, there were definitely positives in both the batting and bowling that saw Scott Copperfield being selected in the Sydney Thunder training squad and room for improvement in the 2015/16 season. The First Grade side would of course not run smoothly without the help and assistance from other members of the club. A special thank you needs to be given to Christine Bennison who returned this season as the hardworking scorer and to Paul Copperfield and Glen Chant for filling in while Christine was appointed to NSW and Australia matches. Thank you to Ron Wright for always lending a helping hand, tirelessly running drinks every week and running the canteen. A special mention to Grahame Cassel who ran the First Grade warm ups in the two day competition and to Jason Coleman and Paul Sullivan for helping during the one day and T20 matches. Thank you to all those who came to support the side each week, to Greg Monaghan, Tom Wood and Alex Murphy again thank you for all your support and work off the field. Finally, to Merryn Bertus, Deborah Copperfield, Bernie Cassel, Lisa Bates and all those who helped along the way with afternoon tea each week, thank you for providing the best spreads in the competition and always ensuring the boys did not go hungry. Congratulations to Manly-Warringah for winning the First Grade Competition and finally to the Parramatta Two Blues, next year is our year! 68

SECOND GRADE REPORT 2014/15 was an impressive season overall for our second grade side. Supported by some outstanding and dominant performances from the likes of Will Affleck and Raza Rizwan at the start of the season, and some impressive team performances at the back end of the season, we finished the regular season in fourth place, earning a semi-final berth in the process. The seven pre-christmas rounds provided essentially a textbook definition of a mixed bag, 3 losses, 2 draws and 2 victories. These performances were highlighted by some big runs being made, Will having amassed near enough to 280 runs by the break, all but securing a much deserved promotion to the top grade, and Raza, an astonishing 380 runs in the first four rounds, sending him back to where he belongs in the middle order of our first grade side. With the break came a string of one-day games, something the side felt very comfortable dealing with. However the New Year also brought about its own set of challenges, namely replacing the avalanche of runs that had moved on to greener pastures in the top grade. The first 3 one-day games were an absolute disaster, losing three winnable matches to Blacktown, Sydney and Northern Districts. Fearing these losses would be the difference between another mid-table finish and finals cricket, the side quickly found its feet again, winning the two remaining one-dayers against North Sydney (having a county cricketer playing against the lowest ranked side the second grade competition doesn t hurt, and it makes for great viewing) and Penrith, putting our season back on track. Round 14 and 15 were must win matches for us if finals were to become a reality, in the penultimate round against Campbelltown our saviour came in the shape of Yusof Sof Brown, with an aggressive and confident 93* he guided us to a competitive total with the help of Critto, BA and Bristow allowing us the time needed to bowl a stubborn Ghosts side out on a very flat wicket. A special mention must go to the way Yusof handled our declaration with his maiden grade century looming, he was even surprised I bothered to tell him, a true team player! Our round 15 win was highlighted by some of the best determination and commitment I have witnessed, ask anyone present and they will confirm this. In the face of a small chase and a spiteful environment, Yusof and Tevin guided the side home 8 down chasing a miserly 142. This result and others going our way meant that fourth place, and the probable second chance was ours. Thoroughly deserved after some of the tough wins at the back end of the season, namely against Campbelltown, Fairfield and Penrith. The finals series is not something I will touch too much on, the side s commitment and passion could never come in to question, however we simply lost too many of the key sessions against Bankstown and Sydney Uni in the Quarter and Semi Finals. The positive to come out of this though is that I think the experience will hold all who participated in good stead, and everyone will come out the other side a better cricketer. Lastly, as is always the case, the season just simply could not have happened without the contributions of so many people. Glenn Chant, Ron Wright, all coaching staff, especially JC who gave up all his time to guide us through the finals series and to anyone who I have regrettably missed, thank you! Stephen Bristow The Log Steve is one of those guys that you can always count on, solid at the top of the order who knows his game well and more often than not will do a job for his side. Not to mention his bowling, a handy asset and he knows how much I rate it! 84

Tevin Liyanage Tev Kevin with a T Tevin took a little while to get used to the subtle differences between second and third grade, but once he did he flourished. An extremely good set of hands in the field and great temperament with the bat are only going to further compliment his class with the ball in the future. His 4 wickets in round 15 were definitely his highlight in the circumstances, and went well with his match winning innings in the same game. Trent Crittenden Critto Trenton When speaking and writing about Trent s cricket I always need to remind myself of his age, at only 21 Trent is a guy that players look up to already and for good reason, he possess a determined attitude and skills that bely his age. A great team man with a bright future. Ben Abbott BA Ben is ultimate competitor who showed his true colours towards the end of the season with a quality 48 in our must win round 14 game and a lone hand effort of 63 in the quarter final against Bankstown. Always willing to do the tough work that others may shy away from (i.e bat pad with no box or lid!). Also, I believe his century in round two was his first one in seconds, well done BA! Ben also featured in the first grade T20 side. Yusof Brown Sof I started the year not knowing much at all about the way sof went about his cricket, and finished the year in awe of him. Yusof matured as the season progressed with matching winning innings in rounds 14 and 15, a true indication of a good cricketer. Well done Sof! Anthony Child Child Tones As well as possessing the least creative nickname in the side, Child also has one of the most creative and astute cricket brains in the club. He knows his game well, a stifling off spinner, Child always finds a way to change a game. Probably could work on his consistency with the stick though! Showed glimpses of his potential in the semi-final where his innings with Parko kept us in the game. James Parkinson Parko Red Any other form of offensive slur towards redheads really Parko joined us halfway through the year while struggling for form, and from a completely selfish standpoint it was a dream come true. Ask anyone he has played against and they will tell you Parko is someone they do not want to play against. He definitely helped turn our season around during the form slump. Parko also stepped in as captain for one game, however from what I am told, there is a reason quicks are not captains! Just joking mate! Chris Bateup Bates Millionaire Angry Man If you ask anyone who their first picked is in a Parra second grade side and I guarantee this bloke is at the top of most lists. Bates is an uncompromising competitor who is passionate about the club, the game and his mates. He also hates losing more than anyone I know! 85

Taylor Charles Tay One of the funniest blokes in the side, whether it is laughing with him or at him (do not know how many times a wicketkeeper can fall over the stumps while taking a throw from the outfield, but it never gets old). Tay did a great job behind the stumps this year and if he can become more composed and confident with the bat he will become an even bigger asset. Love your work Tay, ps I still have your World Bar card! Jared Forbes Utah Forba Although he had a slightly lean year by his lofty standards, Jared still showed how essential he has been to our side for years now and can produce truly unbelievable spells of bowling. It will be sad to see him go next season, but all the best in the future Forba and hopefully we see you back soon! Brad Taylor BT Brad achieved a well-deserved promotion to first grade this year and showed his immense skill set not only when earning it, but also when he got up there and started competing against the best. He is a young guy with a big future ahead. Will & Tim Affleck I thought I would combine this profile to highlight the impact these two have made on our club. Both have brought their commitment and hunger to club, as well as a clear desire to succeed and have made a positive impact on the field and at training. Tim stepped and captained second grade when required and Will had an immense season with the bat (probably a massive understatement!). Welcome to the club boys. A special mention must also go to Liam Gillies, Tim Ward, Ben Duckett, Taj Brar and anyone else who played in the side this year. 97 Third Grade Report Season 2014/15 Final Position: 11th Season 2014/15 saw a new look, young Parramatta 3rd Grade side with a lot of the players making not only their 3rd Grade debuts but also debuting in Sydney Grade Cricket. A narrow loss round 1 by 16 runs to Minor Premiers Eastern Suburbs put us on the back foot early. But we bounced back round 2 to defeat University of NSW, chasing down a massive total of 337. Rounds 3 to 7 took us up to the Christmas break. Unfortunately there were no wins in these 5 matches, but some narrow losses and some encouraging signs A good win against Sydney round 8, first game of the New Year, in a limited overs match was a great way to record our second win. Rounds 9 to 11 saw us lose three matches heavily to good opposition but the boys remained positive throughout. It was in round 12 against Gordon that side stepped up and started to play some really good cricket. We began to reap the benefits of all the hard work both on and off the field - at training and through the lessons learned on match day. The side convincingly won the last four games against Gordon, Randwick Petersham, Campbelltown- Camden & Fairfield-Liverpool. From my point of view it was an encouraging and successful season with a number of good young players establishing themselves at this level. It was also great to see a number of these players promoted and get a taste of Second Grade. I would like to thank all the players for their efforts on match day, at training as well as their support and respect they showed to me as Captain. It is very easy to captain a side of quality blokes giving their all each week for both the Club and their team. Thanks to the Club for giving me the opportunity to captain the side. Special thank you to the following people: Our devoted Scorer, Gerard Joseph Anthony Simonsen for assistance on match day Wayne, Brad and all the Merrylands Oval Ground Staff Thanks for your effort lads, I enjoyed your company and playing alongside a great bunch of blokes. I hope to see you all back next season and I have no doubt that with the experience gained and the talent shown we will be in a good position to challenge in the finals next season. Jason Coleman Captain 97

Third Grade Player Profiles Jason Coleman - 15 matches (249 runs, 40 wickets, 7 catches) JC led from the front as skipper both on and off the field. Great example to the young blokes on how to compete all day, and how to make the most of your ability. Jason deservedly finished as the number one bowler in the Third Grade competition. Did a great job as skipper of an inexperienced side and was embraced by the players as a valued addition to the coaching staff (by James Wood) Highlights: 54 vs UNSW, 6/41 vs Gordon, 6/44 v Northern Districts Liam Lofts - 14 matches (61 runs, 12 wickets, 4 catches) Played the whole season in 3rd Grade, taking some very valuable wickets with his big-turning off spinners. Showed potential and a cool head with the bat, steering us home under pressure versus Randwick Petersham. Also took the best outfield catch ever at long- on against Northern Districts. Highlights: 2/46 vs Northern Districts, 2/48 vs Sutherland James Wood - 14 matches (224 runs, 4 catches) Had a good start before succumbing to a back injury, where he never quite managed the same form. James gives his all in the field, often putting his body on the line. A great team and club man whose attitude is a role model for all players. Was a massive help to me with on field tactical decisions. Highlights: 50 vs Campbelltown Camden, 40 vs UNSW Taj Brar - 13 matches (195 runs, 9 catches) Joined us round three after starting the season in 2s. Taj has the ability to never look flustered or out of his depth while batting no matter how good the opposition bowling is. Showed some positive signs towards the end of the season by batting with more urgency and intent. One of the Club s best trainers, who will continue to improve with this great ethic. Ended up the leading catch taker in the side. Highlights: 51 vs Western Suburbs, 33 vs Hawkesbury Sharad Patel - 12 matches (122 runs, 5 wickets, 3 catches) First year at the Club. Proved to be a genuine all-rounder, scoring handy runs at the top of the order early season followed by important bowling spells later in the year. Does like a catch at deep backward square and a great bloke to play cricket with. Highlights - 51 vs UNSW, 2/17 vs Penrith George Joseph - 12 matches (94 runs, 15 catches) George s energetic and mistake-free keeping was the benchmark in the field, lifting the side s intensity and standards. Showed his potential with the bat against Randwick Petersham, guiding us home as he registered 44* under pressure. Highlights: 44* vs Randwick Petersham, 29 vs Blacktown Liam Gilles - 12 matches (12 runs, 17 wickets, 7 catches) Was a consistent performer and lead from the front with the new ball as the spearhead of the attack. With consistent performances and a great training ethic, Liam was rewarded with Second Grade selection this season. Great outfielder with a safe pair of hands when patrolling the boundary. Highlights: 4/10 vs Mosman, 3/17 vs Sydney Owen Simonsen - 11 matches (201 runs, 6 wickets, 7 catches) Owen s first season of grade cricket saw him play the whole season in third grade. Proved on more than one occasion to be a match winner with the bat, with his positive stroke play. Owen bowled well without much luck, his stats don t do justice to some of his probing spells. Without a doubt the best fielder in the side who can field anywhere. Good team player, always encouraging his teammates. Highlights: 60 vs North Sydney, 42* vs Gordon, 3/42 vs Mosman 98

Tim Ward - 10 matches (241 runs, 3 catches) Tim was promoted to thirds round 5 and never looked back. A naturally talented, easy on the eye, left handed bat who punished anything on his pads. Very good trainer who works hard on his batting and listens to advice. Tim s consistent season was rewarded with a call up to second grade at the back end of the season. Committed fielder who made the short leg position his own. Highlights: 66 vs Campbelltown Camden, 48 vs Sutherland, 38 vs Penrith Ameesh Kaul - 9 matches (178 runs, 4 catches) Proved to be a stylish driver of the ball when relaxed and confident at the crease, his innings against Gordon was one of the best for the season. A naturally balanced and gifted fielder who works hard at all aspects of his game, and is a pleasure to captain. Highlights: 43 vs Gordon, 41 vs UNSW, 32 vs Blacktown Kyle Masters - 9 matches (105 runs, 10 wickets, 4 catches) Whether batting or bowling Kyle is a match winner. Was promoted to third grade round 5 after dominating fourth grade. Proved to be more successful with the ball but showed his talent as a destructive bat when promoted to opener against Fairfield. Highlights: 40* vs Fairfield Liverpool, 3/36 vs Penrith Evan Pitt - 7 matches (86 runs, 2 wickets, 2 catches) High expectations after a strong previous season in Fourth Grade. Can change a game with his hard hitting batting and has the nous to steer the team home as shown at UNSW. Genuine all-rounder when fully fit who showed his ability with the ball round one against a strong Eastern Suburbs side. Highlights: 47* vs UNSW, 2/9 vs Eastern Suburbs Luke McNaught - 4 matches (61 runs, 14 wickets, 3 catches) It is no coincidence that the four games Macca played in we won. Dominant player at this level with bat or ball. Gives 100% the whole game whether batting, bowling or fielding. Also proved to be a gun slip fielder. Highlights: 55 vs Randwick Petersham, 6/14 vs Fairfield Liverpool, 5/50 vs Campbelltown Camden Kevin Tyler - 4 matches (71 runs, 5 wickets, 1 catch) Kevin played the first four games in Third Grade and proved to be a handy all-rounder. Injuries, work commitments and holidays disrupted his season. A full season next year will see Kevin back, dominating this grade. Highlights: 34* vs UNSW, 3/40 vs Eastern Suburbs Also played: Yusuf Brown, Brett Russell, Darren Smith, Stephen Bristow, Ben Monaghan, Varun Satish, Hayden Cole, Michael Sullivan, Michael Wood, Fidah Chowdhury 99

FOURTH GRADE REPORT The 2014/15 season for the Parramatta Fourth Grade side was a very solid one filled with consistent performances from the boys. Unfortunately we were unable to make the semi-finals, however we finished a very respectable 7th with 55 points (enough to make semis for the past 10 years). This season was full of highs and lows, stupid comments from our resident culprits, laughter and most importantly a fun team atmosphere/environment. This year was my first as full time skipper and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My aim from the outset was to create a welcoming and fun team atmosphere and environment which I believe I achieved. In turn the boys gave me 100% and had a never say die attitude. On many occasions we snatched victory from the jaws of defeat by just staying in the contest. This was a feature of the side all season. The highlight of the year was the 4th grade bowling attack. This attack was by far the best in the competition, however unfortunately they were let down by our batsmen. The batting line up never got going as a unit, instead managing some solid individual efforts. A few more runs from our batsmen and I have no doubt we would have won the competition. PRE SEASON: The boys got stuck into their pre-season fitness and skills. There were some very 'different' drills on show during this pre-season, drills which initially had me asking ' what the ' is going on, however to the coaching staffs credit, it worked. All three coaches did an amazing job all season and this showed in the levels of attendance and our position throughout the grades and the club championship. Well done Spud, Sully & JC. SEASON: Unfortunately the fourth grade side got off to a slow start only winning 2 from our first 6 games. We can put this down to nerves, injuries and unavailability of some key players. However once the sides were settled, we saw the true ability of the fourth grade side come to the fore, winning 7 of our last 9 games. Our bowling attack was sensational all season, led by Fidah Chowdhury, Hayden Cole, Michael Sullivan, Daniel Beattie and Ankur Patel. Each bowler offered something different, they hunted in pairs and enjoyed in each other success. Our batting on the other hand was generally very poor...enough said. In closing, I would like to thank a few people for their efforts throughout the season. Firstly to Alex Murphy, Paul Sullivan, Jason Coleman, a great deal of thanks must go to you for your efforts, time and persistence throughout the season. Thank you to Ron Wright and Tom Wood for your contributions to the club. To Greg Monaghan and the committee, thank you for the support and work that is done behind the scenes and off the field. To Veena Satish, thank you for scoring for us once again this season. We value you greatly and would much rather have you in the side than Varun. It s the only reason we keep picking him :) Jokes. On a serious note, you are very much a member of the side and we greatly appreciate your time and effort each week. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish every player, and the club all the very best for the 2015/16 season which will be coming up very soon! I am looking forward to it and another successful year. Below are some player profiles of our 4th grade players. Navnith Chetty 103

PLAYER PROFILES ANKUR PATEL Our resident off-spinner, Ankur had a very solid season with the ball. Also, after an indifferent start to the season with the bat, Ankur saw himself slide down the batting order from #4 to #9 at one stage. Knowing the ability Ankur possessed, skipper Chetty entered the fray and promoted him to open the innings. First match 73...well done skip!! Ankur continued that form and finished the season as our highest run scorer, including another match winning 50 against Campbelltown. AMEESH KAUL One of the most frustrating cricketers I have ever captained. A super bloke, a gun fielder and pretty too watch with bat in hand, Kauli has it all and is an amazing talent. I have no doubt he will play first grade one day. He just needs believe in his ability and learn to build an innings. The frustrating part is there are too many good looking 20's without going on with it. I am expecting big things from Ameesh next season and if he can get the mental side of his game down pat, he will fulfil his immense potential. DYLAN CHARLES A new face to the club and the younger brother 2nd grade keeper Taylor Charles. Now imagine if you put Taylor's head on Dylan's body, now that's an irresistible combo. The man they call fridge had an indifferent season. Fridge showed glimpses of what he can do with a brutal and destructive 63 during the season. He is also an excellent team man. PAUL GIUMELLI Bradman was definitely our most consistent batsmen without making a 50. Paul started the season off very well in 5's and was rewarded with a spot in 4's. He didn't waste any time smashing the 4th grade bowlers to all parts while always looking a million dollars. No doubt this ' spring chicken ' can play higher grades. It was also great to have another senior player around to talk tactics and bounce ideas off. BRETT RUSSELL Baz Jr, why? Because he looks like Chris ' Barry White. Baz had an ok year with the bat, making a few good looking 40's and a 50. A player with loads of talent, I'm expecting a big year from Baz next season. He also has the best hands in the club. Can catch anything. NAVNITH CHETTY A poor season with the bat by my standards and I felt I let the side down in this regard. Over eager to lead by example, I got off to a poor start, however had a better post-christmas period. Enjoyed the captaincy and looking forward to a solid pre-season and leading the side again next season. DANIEL BEATTIE Young Daniel has all the skills to play higher grades. An all-rounder to watch for the future. Can bat, can bowl and definitely can field, however we won't mention the dropped catch straight to him at leg slip which denied Sully a hat-trick :) Daniel was solid this season and showed regular glimpses of his ability with bat, ball and in the field. Expecting big things from Daniel next season. 104

VARUN SATISH V by his own admission would say he did not have the best season, however I have not seen anyone work harder at their game. He has improved immensely from the chubby pimple clad boy I first met and has shown a level of maturity which will hold him in good stead for next season. V needs to back himself and believe in his own ability. When he does this, he is a completely different player and he showed this on occasions throughout the season. In other new, Varun's ovaries did eventually drop, however Fridge and Dos are still confused, asking. Is it supposed to look so black? FIDAH CHOWDHURY Fidah's journey this season was one that I was proud to be part off. He did everything expected of him and put in the effort which saw him finish the leading wicket taker in the 4th grade line up and rewarded with a few games in 3rd grade. Fidah led the attack superbly all year round and also contributed with the bat, showing his all-round abilities. Also, rumour has it that Fidah has recovered from the mauling he suffered at the hands of Big Bad Bristow from their gay pirate cruise :) BBB, known for his brutal & ferocious straight driving down the ground must have had Fidah in quite a pickle. MICHAEL SULLIVAN I've said it numerous times, this guy will play a lot of first grade. He has the all the attributes of a good fast bowler, not to mention a little thing called genetics. Sully's performances throughout the year were nothing short of sensational including 10 wickets in a match and numerous 4fa's and 5fa's. He almost had a hat-trick as well, however it was dropped by Danny Boy (straight to him at leg slip)...did I mention that again :) Sully is also a very capable batsmen and should develop into a solid all-rounder in the coming years. HAYDEN COLE Another new face to the club, Dos had a very solid year with the ball. His stat's do not do him justice and show how well he actually bowled all season. Had the 15 catches which were dropped off his bowling been taken, he would have had some phenomenal stats and played a lot more in the higher grades. Dos also rates his batting very highly and showed glimpses of his batting prowess throughout the year. He is also the inventor of the story of the week. KEVIN TYLER The English born Sri Lankan with a white man s name. Is he really Lankan? Varun...comments? Big Kev was fantastic all season. He led by example with the ball and provided plenty of energy, enthusiasm and profanities any chance he got. Not to mention a regular face full of ball sack...thank goodness for the off season as I don't miss that!! Poor Andrea!!! Finally, to all the players who played 4th grade this year, I would like to thank you for your efforts and contributions throughout this season. You showed your ability through some good performances in respective games and I look forward to seeing plenty more next season. Navnith Chetty 105

Captain Rod Mackander FIFTH GRADE REPORT Well another season has come and gone and the success was far and above my expectations. Having basically a new side from the previous season with an average age of approximately 18 years old if you take out the oldies in Rod, Paul, Mark and even Gayan, I knew the lads could play cricket but wasn t sure how we would compete over a full season of grade cricket. The beauty of this year was only using a total of 25 players which made my job easy as we had the core group for every game. Also what was a success was the Tim Creer experiment as it meant Tom and myself never had a single Friday night conversation, which last season was Every Friday night. Nothing against you Tom but my Mrs was worried as yourself and me were speaking more often than I was with her. Firstly I d like to thank the coaching staff who did an exceptional job this year, with a great pre-season programme, and our weekly training sessions were kept very cricket orientated. Jason especially kept the boys active and I believe this reflected in the clubs results so thanks Jason. Sully (Paul) and Spud (Alex) as always I appreciated you guys lending me your ears on times when I needed to vent thanks for your input over the years as it has helped me greatly. Now the back bone of our team was certainly our bowling, Hands down not a single team had our strengths and depth in bowling and this showed with Gabriel leading the way with 30 wickets and it was a shame with Gabe breaking down with an injury 2 rounds from the semis as Gabe would have crushed 40 plus wickets. A super effort for a young man just 15 years of age, he was a huge loss leading into the semi-final and I m sure it would have been a different result if Gabe had been available and I really wish you a speedy recovery mate from your knee injury. It was a pleasure having been your coach for 4 seasons to play a year of Grade and seeing you fulfil the talent I knew you had. Julian, Jackson and Angus also backed up well with over 15 wickets a piece but as said we had 9 Boys take 11 wickets or more so it was evenly shared over the season. A special mention also to Gabriel who took a hat trick 2 game before his season ended. Gabe also picked up 2 5fas with a best bowling of Julien picked up his first 5fa with 5-26 Angus Gussy Graham bagged a 5fa also 5-8 and the site of his mother chasing him after the game to give a proud motherly hug was great to witness. Dan Beattie also grabbed a 5fa with 6-36 And the huge man big Kevvie Tyler 6-82 great job lads. Fielding again due to Jason s weekly efforts was a huge improvement and hands down our guys were heads and shoulders above the opposition, a testament to the efforts the boys put in at training. Big Rod led the way with 13 grabs. Mick Bellam the rock at gully held a heap of screamers with 11 catches also but the real star was Sexy Joshy Marquez at keeper with 28 catches and 1 stumping and he s a young keeper on the up and up so watch out the boys in 4s and 3s as he s coming for you. Now with the bat this is where we really let ourselves down in every game, We were always waiting for someone else to step up and I believe we learnt a great deal of how to play the game from the dilemmas we found ourselves in. Yes we had a very inexperienced team but I do believe we were better than showed but as long as we learnt from it you boys will be better for the run. That said a few shining lights were Grand Daddy Pauly G. Paul Giumelli with his maiden Ton in round 2 was a great start for Paul and the boys. Matty with his highest score in the semi against the best bowling attack we faced all year with 73.A bright future there Matty keep it up. We are screaming for quality opener s mate Big Jules also cracked a 50 with a score of 60 well done pal. Dan Beattie bagged 2 scores over 50 with a top of 65&*..The human ESKY Dylan (look at my Guns) Charles in his only appearance for us knocked up 75.And Lastly Big Rod bagged 3 half tons and choked on 95 after going to stumps day one on the same score.some positives with our batting we had 8 Boys score over 150 runs for the season with Rod leading the way with 370 followed by Matty 322, Grand Daddy Pauly G 298,,Scotty 186,,Julien 183,,Gayan 179,,Dan Beattie 164,,and Mick Bellam 157 There is also a lot of talent there who I m sure will bag even bigger scores next season. 109

Finally as I write my last Yearly report as I shall be hanging up the boots as a player, I believe I have helped these young men as much as I can and believe under new leadership they will learn a whole lot more different ideas and tips, I have loved every minute, yes even the ones that gave me all these grey hairs, of playing for the 2 blues, I have seen the club grow from strength to strength and I can leave knowing the club is in a great shape, under great leadership, I won t be lost to the club as I ll still be around the BBQ, if there is a beer to be had you can be assured there will be a VB in hand Thanx guys the ride has been great and I m only a phone call away guys if ever anyone needs anything Signing off Rod 110

POIDEVIN GRAY SHIELD REPORT In what showed to be a premature exit to the season considering our potential as a team, credit must be paid to St George, simply being better in the Quarter Final. The Parramatta PG s team has made the finals since 2009, showing what a proud history Parramatta has at this level and the standard our side lived up to this year. The players who took part this season in our PG s campaign can take a lot of pride in the way they played and conducted themselves, as we saw some great future potential coming through the ranks at Parramatta. As a first time captain, it was a pleasure leading a great group of blokes in what was, in my opinion, a successful season. A big thanks to everyone who helped throughout the season, especially JC as coach. Never forgetting a thing on game day and imparting his experience on to me as a fellow captain I can only have high praise for the job he did. Assisting him was Nick Bertus and Anthony Child, who did a great job helping out on game days. As always, the ever-reliable Ron Wright making the whole day possible, getting things done at the ground before most of us even wake up on a Sunday. Also, thanks must go to those who helped that often go unnoticed, Grahame Cassel for helping with the warm up and the blow ups. Also Paul Copperfield as our scorer. Good luck to all the boys eligible to play in next year s PG s, I have no doubt you will do the club proud. Below are some player profiles written by both JC and I. Cheers, Casso Shane Cassel (Captain): , 5 38 Shane led from the front as captain in all aspects of the game both on and off the field and was a major part of the side s success during the season. It was with the bat that he really dominated and was one of the competitions leading run scorers. Without a doubt the highlight being his maiden century for the club against Sydney Uni. (Written by Jason Coleman). Trent Crittenden (Vice Captain): , 1 34 One of our more consistent performers throughout the season, Trent showed his class in the toughest of situations in the Quarter Final scoring 64, giving us any chance of victory. A great Vice Captain and did a fantastic job as one of our senior players. Tim Ward: Played one of the better PG s debut innings I ve seen, scoring a tough 91 against St George. Tim s attacking nature against the new ball is a great asset to any team and we will undoubtedly see him play higher grades in future years. Ben Duckett: , 9 dismissals Benny showed glimpses of his freakish ability to hit the ball to all parts, no doubt having the ability to take any attack apart. A very good gloveman with quality cricketing nous. Evan Pitt: A fantastic middle order batsman, often scoring at over a run a ball and also doing his job for the team to perfection. Playing in his first season of PG s Evan has great potential in future years as he becomes a senior player as both batsman and bowler. Scott Copperfield: & 4 wickets at Scott was another senior player who lead from the front in the field, with the bat and with the ball. Injury prevented him terrorizing top orders, however still managed to have an impact and played a match-saving innings against Bankstown scoring an unbeaten 48 to guide us home. Ameesh Kaul: Statistics don t justify Ameesh s value he provided to our team. Arguably our best fieldsman, Ameesh has an infectious positivity and showed glimpses of his ability at the top of the order, fantastic team man. 113

Bradley Taylor: , BT showed us all why he has been promoted to First Grade through his consistent opening spells, often giving us early breakthrough s, bowling with good patience, control and venom. BT also played some handy knocks with the bat, which when applied properly can offer plenty to the team. Tevin Liyanage: , Tev showcased his class with his quality left arm spinners this season. Often bowling his 10 straight, batsman found no answer to his deceptive flight and consistency. Was easily one of our most effective bowling options. Hayden Cole: , 7 7 Haydos was a fantastic bloke to have in our team this year. Having the ability to bowl with new and old ball, at the death and under pressure, he did a fantastic job for the team, choking opposition batsman with his accuracy and deceptive pace. Get around me! Liam Gillies: Taking the only 5 fa in our team this season, Gill bowled with deadly accuracy, proving to be a very tough bowler to face on day 2 wickets that we encounter in PG s. Took some outstanding catches showing great athleticism, proving to have multiple strings to his bow. Liam Lofts: Unlucky not to get more game time this season, Loftsy showed us his potential bowling his off spinners, capturing 3/10 in his only game. Liam also did a great job as our 12 th Man for most of the games this season, and many thanks go to him for his attitude, which will take him a long way as a cricketer. A big thank you to all the boys who helped out as 12 th /13 th man this year, Taj Brar, Dan Beattie, Taylor Charles and Owen Simonsen, who unfortunately couldn t be in the starting XI, were as big a part of our run to an undefeated regular season as the rest of us. Boys, your efforts didn t go unnoticed and both Jason and I are grateful for your commitment to the team. Cheers, Casso 114

Green Shield report: Luke McNaught PARRAMATTA DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB A W GREEN SHIELD SEASON REPORT In what was a promising start to our campaign with winning both of our trial games against The Kings School and a strong Penrith outfit, the boys were full of confidence. Unfortunately, the season did not go the way we would have liked. With one of the younger teams Parramatta has fielded in recent times, it was always going to be a difficult task against some quality teams. There is no questioning the raw talent we possessed. However, what we didn t have was experience (especially at this level). Unfortunately, our raw talent was not enough to be successful in this competition. When you draw five of the top eight teams, we were going to have to be at our best on every occasion. With a much debated co-captaincy role between Scott Browning and Aidan Fedarow, it was pleasing to hear how well the boys conducted themselves on the field. With multiple reports from umpires praising their teamwork, field placements and communication skills; the boys were referred to as great leaders of the team on the field. Referring back to our young, raw talent. To the boys who move on to senior cricket, you all have promising cricketing careers ahead of you. As you would be aware, the core of our first grade team each season consists of former Parramatta Green Shield players and there is no reason that won t be you in the future. To the younger boys in the squad, it is exciting to know that the core of next year s Green Shield team will be composed of you boys. This raw talent I mentioned earlier now have a season of Green Shield experience, which will only benefit next year s squad. With Parramatta s development squad performing at a level well above their years, there is no doubt we will experience success in the near future. Very exciting times ahead for Parramatta s junior cricket! 117

B6 Report This season was the first in club history that a PDCC side was entered into the local PDCA senior competition. This side comprised of the coaches and players from the Jaycar Parramatta Cricket Academy, a group of talented 13 and 14 year olds, from the Parramatta District. The aim was to expose these boys to the rigours of senior cricket and fast track their development for Green Shield, DCA Shield and ultimately Grade competition. The team was led by Captain and Academy Head Coach Paul Calvert, and supported by Assistant Coach Matt Roughan and another senior player, Steve Goulstone. The rest of 9 or 10 spots each match were occupied by the academy boys. Across the season we were proud to have blooded over 20 boys into senior cricket. PRE SEASON: Our pre-season preparation was spot on with the Academy off season program hardening up the boys physically and technically. However, aside from a couple of the boys (Benny and Jake), none had played a senior game, let alone backed up from morning cricket and played afternoons. You can t prepare 13 and 14 year olds for the physical intimidation that grown men will bring, but you can manage them into that process. SEASON: Going into the season, we had no real expectations at all in terms of ladder or wins, just making sure the boys got plenty of experience. As it turned out, we played our two finals opponents in the first two games and the boys got beaten and schooled pretty quickly by some strong and capable cricketers, several of whom are recent Green Shield and Grade players. Thereafter, with some targeted support from the senior brigade, they began to play with more freedom and confidence and despite a narrow loss in round 5, went through the rest of the season as Minor Premiers and Premiers. All of the boys played important parts in the success of the season, but there were a few outstanding efforts which are worth mentioning, especially when you consider these boys are just 13 and 14 years old. Our joint inaugural Dave Tribolet medallists, Ben Roughan and Jacob Workman were outstanding all season. Ben opened the bowling all season and took an outstanding 28 wickets at which was equal 5 th for the entire competition and backed that up with 189 (25 th in the comp) runs at including a half century. Jacob took 19 wickets (15 th in the comp) at but it was his exceptional effort with the bat which stood out with 297 runs at with 3 half centuries and a top score of 81 (9 th in the comp). Not far behind these boys was our Rookie of the Year, Hayden Goulstone who scored 239 runs at (13 th in the comp) and took 6 wickets at Right throughout the season there were excellent performances from all of the boys with blokes like Matt Ward and Tait Bensemann standing up the Grand Final, AJ Calvert s brave batting early in the season and instrumental in the first win which set us on our way. Austin Philip, Wijith Wijeysari, Hasindhu Sellahewa, Joel Mercer and Harry King all doing a great job at various stages. And not to mention, Jarrod French, Noah Young, Nikshep Mekala, Charlie Tribolet and Brentan Smith who gained valuable experience. With any luck all of these boys will become part of a very successful Grade Club in the years to come. Finally, a special note of thanks to the parents who dedicated so much of their time getting the boys to these games and supporting our program. Without their support none of this is really possible well done. Paul Calvert. 120

Women s Grade Cricket Club There are a number of measurements of a clubs success, and no matter which one is chosen, the Parramatta Women s Grade Cricket Club (PWGCC) meets each measure. What is more interesting is how the PWGCC created their success during 2014/15. One could say success consists of going from failure to failure without the loss of enthusiasm. The opening season was met with a new, energetic committee, which enabled the PWGCC to take the field in both 2 nd and 3 rd grades. There were a number of challenges: player numbers, availably of grounds, etc. But with the support of the Parramatta Cricket Club, Mr Ron Wright and Mr Greg Monaghan, the newly formed PWGCC committee were able to have 2 competitive teams, and have a number of ladies represent at varying levels of woman s cricket & most importantly they had fun. Craig Noble took on the role of Secretary and did a wonderful amount of work to secure not only the administration but the finances for the PWGCC. There is no doubt that without Craig, the success that was enjoyed this season would not have been. In addition, Craig has laid the foundation for further success in the upcoming season. Besides Craig, Scott Melville, Renae Melville, Jenny Todd and Sarah Todd re-committed to the newly formed PWGCC and endorsed the changes, contributing to the new culture of setting the standards both on and off the field. This can be highlighted in the performances of both grades. Without doubt, the PWGCC became a respected force during the 2014/2015 season with each and every player contributing to their team. The committee and I could not be more proud. Continuous effort is the key to unlocking the potential of the PWGCC, and attitude is the little thing that will make a big difference. That difference has certainly been recognised, by our competitors & also the administration. While the initial goal wasn t to impress those parties, the feedback we have received: on the way our teams play, the way the club manages & respects the players, the fresh attitude we have brought to the competition all these things have been fed back to us in a positive light & people are sitting up & taking notice. This is in keeping with the mantra of PWGCC will set the standards for women s cricket both on & off the field. I stand here I can proudly say that we are not just doing this, we are achieving this. A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; however an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. The Parramatta Women s Grade Cricket Club are not only optimists but are masters of our own fate. So what s in store for the 2015/16 season? We have entered a team in the Sydney Junior Winter Competition We will enter a team in the NSW Women s Junior Breakers U13 competition Coinciding with our overall support of Women s Cricket, we are also supporting the Kings Langley & Castle Hill Cricket Clubs in entering a side in the Junior Breakers competition We have been also busy recruiting players so that we can enter a team in the Brewers Shield U17 competition. Whilst this is a young team, we are very excited about the future of this team & the calibre of talent. In the train on squad, 9 of our young ladies have been selected for their respective age groups in the CNSW Development Academy. We see this squad as future 2 nd grade players in the coming years & also to be the nucleus for a PWGCC 1 st grade side Last, but by no means least, we will continue to field teams in both 2 nd grade and 3 rd grade. So it s been a busy 12 months, one in which we have achieved a great deal. We are building a solid base with our existing teams, investing in junior development for both PWGCC & the future of women s cricket overall. We have achieved a lot, but there is still much more to do. With the continuing support of PDCC, I am confident that we will have a successful season in 2015/16. In closing, the opportunity to represent our women s cricket as their president has been a wonderful experience. I would not have asked more of you, each lived up to high expectations, if not more & I look forward to your continuing support as we head toward our goal of making PWGCC the premier women s cricket club by which other clubs will be judged. President Scott Reibelt 124
