4 Membership Renewals New U.S. Figure Skating Season Begins on July 1 Membership applications for the season are now available on the club website. Please note the following changes: As a result of the dues increases passed by U.S. Figure Skating at the 2011 Governing Council, we must accordingly increase rates by the USFS designated amounts ($10.00) across all categories except newcomer, collegiate and associate. Please note that for every first family member and two parents/guardians, the club pays U.S. Figure Skating 50% of your dues. We must pass these increases to members in order to continue to offer free weekly Club Ice and special events such as the spring ice show. We continue to encourage parents/guardians of first family members to join the club at no charge - first because your involvement and support are vital to our success and secondly because your participation increases our delegates to Governing Council. In short, the more members we have, the greater our voice in critical USFS decisions that affect our skaters. The volunteer service hours requirements have been increased to six (6) hours or a $75 service fee. No membership categories will be pro-rated under any circumstances. Don't forget... If you are competing in an event that begins after June 30, you must renew your membership in advance in order to remain in good standing. Atlanta FSC Receives USFS Plus 10 Award The Atlanta FSC was honored at the 2011 Governing Council as a recipient of U.S. Figure Skating's new Plus 10 award for registering 10 or more new members this year. We actually registered 48 new skating members! 2011 ATLANTA OPEN LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Competition Registration Chair Competition Operations Chair Jeannette Doney Dale Haar AREA CHAIRS Announcing/Music Awards Coaches' Hospitality Food Donations Goody Bags John Richardson Marybeth Rathbun Haley Osenbaugh Karen Hiller Jan Brown Officials Ground Transportation Practice Ice Monitors Program Registration Peggy McCarthey Leon Qiao Heather Heydet Francesca Sichenze-Bryant Anna Marie Champion Hotels Dale Haar Runners Jan Brown Ice Monitors Christi Fisher Set Up/Break Down Dale Haar IJS Set Up Officials' Hospitality Officials' Liaison Jeannette Doney Leon Qiao Sharon Hyre Gloria Lewis Skating Stars Locker Room Vendors Volunteer Coordinator Jan Brown Dale Haar Peggy McCarthey 4

5 SPOTLIGHT SKATER Kamayla Ko What made you decide to start skating? When my sister started taking private skating lessons, it was only natural that my mom enrolled me in group lessons as well. At first I didn t enjoy them, but later on I realized how much fun it was when I saw others doing jumps and spins. What keeps you motivated to continue skating? What I love about skating most is when you successfully perfect an element. It s a great feeling to know that you can consistently execute it. What really keeps me motivated is my dream to one day maybe compete at the Olympics. My parents and siblings also motivate me by encouraging me to go far in the future with skating. What is your weekly training regimen? I skate six times a week in the afternoon. I have a personal trainer and work out for an hour two times a week for off-ice training. What are your favorite and least favorite elements? My favorite elements are double Salchow, double flip, and death drop. I would have to say my least favorite elements are the double Lutz and the Beilman. Favorite music/program. My favorite program would be my current long program although I have no idea where the music was from. What is the most memorable event of your skating career? When I was only 5 years old, I accidentally wet myself in my competition dress while I was competing. When it was over, I eventually laughed at myself. Who is your favorite skater? Whom do you admire most? Best advice you have ever received? Fall seven times, stand up eight. Tell us about your family. Tell us about your school and extracurricular activities. I am currently a 5th grader at Matt Elementary. My favorite subjects are reading, writing and science. I am also in Duke University s TIP Program. My favorite skater is Yu-Na Kim, because even though she has amazing technique in her skating, she also possesses the grace. I admire my mom the most, because she has been by my side even when it was hard times. I have an older brother (Cartson, 28) and an older sister (Jerica, 18). Other hobbies that I enjoy besides skating are reading, drawing and doing yardwork. What are your future skating and educational goals? I hope to accomplish landing my double Axel and triple jumps by the end of the year. I will attend college and continue skating (as long as I can). My three favorite things are Drawing, playing, and socializing. I would like to meet... Florence Welch. She is very creative and eccentric not only with her music but also with her fashion. If I weren t a skater, I would have been A ballerina or a gymnast. K A M A Y L A Favorite word: Eccentric Least favorite word: Lazy What turns me off: Whining Favorite quote: "It doesn't matter who you are, or where you come from, or how much money you've got in your pocket. You have your own destiny and your own life ahead of you." ~ Stefani Germanotta Favorite book: Number the Stars - Lois Lowry Favorite movie: "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" Favorite song: : Born This Way - Lady Gaga TV Show: "Modern Family" Sound I love: Beach waves Sound I dislike: Crying I would never want to be: Construction worker or janitor Three words that best describe me: Creative, funny, and friendly. If I were stranded on a desert island, I would have to have: Unlimited food, my ipod, and a survival guide. P.S. I enjoy attending concerts. 5

8 The last time the Atlanta FSC sponsored an ice show was over 20 years ago. That fact did not deter our very special, Special Events Chair, Tami Mickle, from proposing and producing the highly successful show, "Georgia on My Mind," which featured the majority of AFSC skaters. Never at a loss for big ideas or creativity, Tami also fashioned other special events such as the unforgettable Nationals road trip and fun club ice socials. Very special thanks and hugs to Tami for giving our skaters fantastic memories for ! ~ Peggy McCarthey Tami Mickle A Very Special - Special Events Chair When did you join the Atlanta FSC, and how did you first become involved as a volunteer? I joined in January, 1970 at a VERY old 12 for a beginner skater, but I had been involved in dance and ballet since I was three, so the transfer of skills was easy. Officially my first "job" with the Atlanta FSC that I remember was being the Junior representative on the Board of Directors... similar position to our present athlete representative. I think I was 16 at the time. Describe your past and current positions as well as any other contributions to the club. I've served many positions on the Board of Directors, chairing various committees with Special Events being my FAVORITE...love making everyone have fun!! David and Tami at Tybee Lighthouse on island transportation. Please describe your accomplishments and goals as a skater. Within the first year of skating I caught up to my contemporaries by passing Preliminary through Intermediate figures and free skate.. I accomplished my Gold/Senior level at 19, and I began competing at the Novice level and continued through Senior representing the Atlanta FSC. I was the first club member to take all my figure tests in Atlanta and all free skate tests through the Atlanta FSC. We had to travel to Macon for one of my free skate tests because the rink here was not considered large enough to test on, so my Mom, three judges and I, all drove to Macon. After I passed the figures portion, I warmed up, then did the test, and we all drove back to Atlanta!! Why do you stay involved as a volunteer with the Atlanta FSC? I see what a difference one person's efforts can make to so many of the skaters and remember how much I loved my skating friends and "family" and the time we all spent together. I still love being a part of that effort. Tell us a little about your background, profession, hobbies, and family. I'm a homegrown Atlantan - Russian mother, Southern dad! Lots of great food with sauces as a child :>). I fell in love with the magic of skating while watching Peggy Fleming on TV, and I thought her post-olympic TV specials were amazing. Always a huge Wide World of Sports fan, I fulfilled a dream by working with my mentor, Doug Wilson, who led me to my "other" job later in life. I'm now an Emmy Award winning Sports & Entertainment TV & webcast director. I produce and direct the LIVE webcast for IceNetwork during the competitive season. A highlight came at the World Championships in Los Angeles where I shared the duties of directing the World TV Feed to skating fans all over the world. Although I love the excitement and travel of TV, a teaching career will always be my first passion and the job I intended for my life. At this point, I commute from Tybee Island for three nights a week to continue that relationship with my clients and the Atlanta FSC. My husband, David, and I celebrated 25 years of marriage this past New Year's Eve and absolutely adore our new life of bicycle transportation, beach time and as many grandchildren visits as possible! We have six "mini-micks" under 7 years old and hope for more. My last, but definitely not least, priority in daily life is Rupert, our 150-pound pup, who happily makes the occasional commute so we can have our walk together! 8 June,2011
