4 Gilles & Poirier teamed up in summer Gilles grew up in the United States and competed internationally with Timothy McKernan and Zachary Donohue. At the junior level in the U.S., she won a pewter medal (4th place) with McKernan, a bronze medal with Donohue, and two silver medals (one with each partner). Poirier competed for ten years with Vanessa Crone, winning the Canadian title in Crone & Poirier finished as high as seventh at the World Championships (in 2010) and won the bronze medal at the 2011 Grand Prix Final. They were also on the 2010 Olympic Team. Gilles did not compete in the season, leaving figure skating training to focus on acting. When she decided to return to the sport, she considered several options, but did not find a perfect fit until the tryout with Poirier. 12 TEAM NOTES: Orford & Williams began skating together in May Since they won the Canadian junior title in 2011, they had to move up to the senior level within Canada, although they competed on the junior international level this fall. This is a greater challenge in ice dance than in the other disciplines, since a different short dance is required. Orford previously skated with Malcolm Rohon-O'Halloran, finishing seventh at 2010 Skate Canada Junior Nationals. She has only been ice dancing since Williams previously skated with Olga Lioudvinevitch and Alicia Williams, his sister. Williams had decided to take a year off from skating and had moved back home to Alberta when Orford contacted him for a tryout. He had to quickly decide to move to Vancouver to team up with her. Orford & Williams have the highest score attained by a Canadian junior dance team since the compulsory dance was removed from the competitive format.

14 TEAM NOTES: Paul & Islam teamed up in January Paul previously skated with Jason Cheperdak, winning the 2009 Canadian junior bronze medal. Islam previously skated with Joanna Lenko, winning the 2007 Canadian silver medal on the junior level. Islam's father, David, is part of their coaching team and his mother, Debbie, is a judge. Paul has been fighting injury all season, and was getting back on track when a collision during practice at NHK Trophy forced them out of that competition. She had surgery on her leg to repair the damage sustained from the impact.
