2 coaching staff Chris Lawson is in his ninth and final season as the head coach of the Waterloo men s volleyball program. Lawson has guided the Warriors to five straight OUA final four s and two straight CIS Championships after Waterloo got past Queen s in this year s OUA bronze medal match. Lawson has accumulated a regular season record and has led Waterloo to the OUA playoffs every year he s been at the helm. Lawson brings a solid background of coaching volleyball on several levels. He has over 15 years coaching experience with OVA and club teams, 20 years coaching senior high school (men s and women s), and over 25 years of volleyball camp leadership. Lawson has also coached with the Team Canada Youth program, Team Ontario Men, and the Ontario Summer Games team for several years. Lawson is a NCCP level III coach. He is currently involved in administrative roles with Volleyball Ontario including Provincial Team Coach Selection Committee and LTAD Implementation Committee. Lawson has received numerous high school and provincial coaching awards in his career and was named the OUA coach of the year. Shayne White returns for his fifth season as assistant coach of the Waterloo men s volleyball program. White was a head coach of the Laurier Golden Hawks from and head coach of the Laurier women s team the season prior. White is level III certified NCCP and spent time as the Canada Games head coach (silver medal in 2009) and Canada Games assistant coach (bronze medal in 2005). White also had time as the head coach of Team Alberta. CHRIS LAWSON - HEAD COACH (9TH SEASON) SHAYNE WHITE - ASSISTANT COACH LUKE SNIDER - ASSISTANT COACH Luke Snider enters his third season as assistant coach of the men s program. Snider is no stranger to Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women s volleyball scene spending five seasons across the street with the Laurier Golden Hawks and the last two seasons assisting the men s program. Snider also coached team Ontario for four seasons. Snider is a level three certified coach who brings a wealth of experience to the team. His team-first approach and winning attitude will give the men s volleyball program a redefined look going into the season. Snider has also had abundant success as a player. He was the libero on the Canadian National team from and won a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Championship with the Alberta Golden Bears in Snider is looking forward to his second season as the Warriors bench boss and making a continued impact in the season Support staff Nicole Van Den Hoogan Student Therapist Mikayla Macdonald Student Therapist Geen Frew Student Therapist

3 ; A Season of resiliency The Waterloo Warriors men s volleyball season could have been defined in a moment when the players weren t even on the court. It was December 23, 2015, and the Warriors had just been dealt a massive blow: four wins from November had just been stripped from the team due to the use of an ineligible player. The rules infraction was unintentional; a simple misunderstanding of course-load requirements. But it was an infraction nonetheless, and the Warriors saw their 7-4 record plummet all the way to 3-8. As far as early Christmas gifts go, this was a volleyball-sized chunk of coal in the Warriors collective stocking. But instead of letting that moment define them, head coach Chris Lawson and his team saw an opportunity. We have decided it is only going to make us stronger, said Lawson in December. Every team faces adversity throughout the season, and although this is a different kind, we are confident we can come together with a goal of qualifying for the postseason. They did more than just qualify. Faced with a virtual must-win situation for every match of the second half of the season, the Warriors rattled off an 8-1 record to finish 5th in the OUA. Then, they punched their ticket to their 5th straight OUA final four by upending the Toronto Varsity Blues in the first round of playoff action. And, after falling to the eventual champion McMaster Marauders in the OUA semifinals, Waterloo had a chance to qualify for the CIS national championships in the OUA Bronze medal match against the Queen s Gaels. The Warriors once again faced a possible defining moment when they fell behind two sets to one. But two nailbiting sets and one emotional comeback later, the Warriors claimed OUA Bronze, and their second consecutive trip to the CIS National Championships. I am proud of our guys to bounce back and earn a scrappy victory over the Gaels, said Lawson. It s been a season of resiliency for us, and I expect it to continue into nationals. The Warriors have a daunting front-court attack, led by third-year Outside Hitter Braden Cok. The first-team OUA all-star registered 3.9 kills per set in the regular season, and he exploded for 23 kills in the five-set OUA Bronze medal match. Fellow first-team all-star Libero Erich Woolley led the OUA with 2.76 digs per set, and setter Gibson Graham was second in the conference with assists per set. Add to that the blocking prowess of Jordan McKonkey (65 total blocks on the season), and the secondary scoring power of brothers Greg and Aidan Simone, and the Warriors have the tools to compete with any team in the nation. After posting a 0-2 record at last year s CIS National Championships, the seasoned War- riors are back with something to prove. And if their ability to overcome adversity this season has taught the Warriors anything, it s that their defining moment could still be coming this weekend MEN'S VOLLEYBALL SCHEDULE AND RESULTS Regular Season: 11-9 Playoffs: 2-1 REGULAR SEASON DATE RESULT (SET SCORES) OPPONENT HOME/AWAY L 2-3 (17-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 8-15) W 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 19-25, 26-24) L 2-3 (24-26, 18-25, 25-23, 25-17, 13-15) L 0-3 (16-25, 22-25, 15-25) W 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21) W 3-1 (25-13, 25-19, 22-25, 25-13) W 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-20) W 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21) W 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 25-20, 25-21) W 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-23) W 3-2 (25-17, 22-25, 24-26, 25-16, 15-6) W 3-1 (23-25, 28-26, 25-21, 25-17) W 3-2 (25-21, 17-25, 20-25, 25-16, 15-9) L 0-3 (24-26, 22-25, 15-25) W 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23) McMaster York Nipissing McMaster Guelph Ryerson Toronto Windsor Western RMC Queen s Windsor Western Ryerson Toronto RMC Queen s Nipissing York Guelph PLAYOFFS DATE RESULT (SET SCORES) W 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23) L 0-3 (22-25, 21-25, 24-26) W 3-2 (24-26, 25-17, 16-25, 25-23, 15-12) OPPONENT HOME/AWAY Toronto (OUA quarter-finals) McMaster (OUA semifinals) Queen s (OUA bronze)
