3 P A G E 3 Gold, Silver, Bronze Fifty-three members of Hamilton Pickleball competed in a wonderful tournament hosted by the Kitchener Waterloo Pickleball Club on April 12/13. Kudos to Patricia Archambault for doing such a great job! Hamilton players enjoyed meeting eighty players from a variety of other communities and learning how pickleball was growing in their cities. Although it was a competitive tournament and everyone was attempting to perform at their highest level, the most important take-away was the tremendous comradery displayed by people who play pickleball. There was much enjoyment and laughter. In addition to taking away great memories, Pickleball Hamilton took away the most medals. In the Mixed Doubles Open (any age) Gary Davies and Marilyn Prowse won the Gold medal. They displayed excellent skills and worked in great tandem. Marilyn also brought home a Bronze medal when she paired with Cathy Johnston in the Women s Doubles Open Division. Congratulations to Marilyn, Gary and Cathy. In the Men's Open Doubles, 7 Teams entered with 3 Teams advancing past the round robin. James Dye and Jim Black advanced to the quarter final round after posting a 4-1 record and they faced off against Jeff and Derek Morgan who advanced with a 5-1 record. Jeff and Derek advanced to the Semi's losing to the eventual Gold Medalists. Gary Davies and John Boyle finished the round robin at 6-0 and advanced to the Semi's losing to the eventual Silver Medalists. The Bronze Medal match was an all Pickleball Hamilton event with the Morgan brothers avenging their Round Robin defeat, beating Davies and Boyle 2-0 in the best 2 out of 3 affair. Congratulations to Derek and Jeff on winning the Bronze Medal. In the Men s Doubles (55+) Kam Keyhan and John Sullivan played well and used their 3 rd shot soft routine to capture the Silver Medal. Well done Kam and John.

4 It was late in 2012 when P A G E 4 Player Profile: Marilyn Prowse Marilyn Prowse first discovered pickleball. She began playing at her dad s winter residence at Jamaica Bay in Fort Myers, Florida. Naturally, when Marilyn returned home in the spring of 2013 her first priority was to go online to look up places to play in the Hamilton area. She first played at the Sackville Seniors Centre and then the Dundas Lions Memorial Rec Centre. As the game has grown in the Hamilton region she now plays, or has played at, Ancaster Rotary Centre, Delta High School, Westmount and Central Memorial Recreation Centres. While in Florida this past winter, Marilyn has found the highly competitive games played at the nearby Wakehatchee Rec Centre enjoyable, and well-suited to the fast-paced game she likes to play. Jamaica Bay also has a large group of friendly and enthusiastic pickleball players who have become her second family. Like most tennis players Marilyn caught on to the fundamentals of pickleball quickly. Her success in tournament play is a source of pride for Pickleball Hamilton. She won the first tournament she entered taking first place with her regular doubles partner Gary Davies in the spring of She has also taken medals with her regular ladies doubles partner, Carla Black in Brantford, London, Hamilton and Ontario s annual provincial tournament (P.A.O). In addition, Marilyn has also earned a gold medal at the Ontario Senior Games (Regionals) in Milton and came away with a bronze in ladies doubles, a gold in mixed doubles at the Kitchener Challenge and a Silver in Mixed Doubles at the OSGA 55+ tournament in Stratford. Upcoming tournaments for Marilyn will be the P.A.O. and Eastern Canadian Nationals in Waterloo, and tournaments in Brantford and London. Currently, Marilyn uses two paddles; choosing either the Singleton brand, Big Boy Slim or the Paddletek Element. Besides a passion for playing, Marilyn s goal is to help grow the game of pickleball. She has been helping with teaching clinics in Florida, and is usually the first one to help new players here in Hamilton learn the fundamentals. Marilyn has two children, Josh and Carly, and is looking forward to the day when she can teach her grandchildren, Theo and Finn the game of pickleball. Another passion of Marilyn s is playing the ukulele and she hopes one day to have the time to join the ukulele band. My Tournament Experience By Ray Munro On Wed. March 25th, I attended the KW Pickleball club for a Friendly tournament at the Manu-Life Center (RIM). My good friend Neville Newman, had signed us up. To those of you who haven t visited the RIM mecca, they have 12 pickleball courts, each three separated by a drop barrier. The court floors are well marked, and with little glare on the surface, so the distractions were practically zero. I don t have an appreciation for the numbers in the different categories, but it was dominated by the mixed doubles age groups, with lesser numbers in the open and senior doubles. Very well spaced out games, with time to get a snack between. Play was overseen by a Non-Volley zone judge, who also kept track of the score, side-outs and tried as well to punctuate serve line footfaults, and some noticeable underhanded service styles. The players made the in-out side and base-line line decisions and were Congrats to Ray Munro (Pickleball reminded to really call out the score before they served. Unfortunately, we had Hamilton) and Neville Newman to leave before the goodies were presented, pickleballs, with the details, and a (Guelph) on their Bronze Medal neck strap of Gold, Silver or Bronze)... a neat idea..!! If you get a chance, try it win at KW friendly tournament. next year, it was a great time.

5 Rules Corner I was playing in a match recently and the ball was close to the line, one of my opponents called it out, the other called it in. We replayed the point, was that correct? No, the ball should have been declared in. Rule 6.D.10. states in doubles play, if one player calls the ball out and the partner calls it in, then doubt exists, and the ball must be declared in (except that any player may appeal a call to the referee in an officiated match). International Federation of Pickleball Want to know your rating level? Want to know if your paddle is legal? Want to buy Pickleball Hamilton apparel? Want to know more about the rules and strategy? Want to know where to play? Want to know about tournaments? Want to see the Wall of Fame? Want a Pickleball Hamilton membership? The answers to these and many more questions can be found at our website: Follow us on Twitter PickleballHam Play Safely 1. Do not cross courts at any time to get the ball or to go from one court to the next. 2. Call ball on court in a loud voice to warn others of this situation. 3. If ball on court is called for your court, stop playing immediately. Return the ball. Replay. 4. Unless there is a very large area, do not walk behind another court to retrieve the ball. Follow #3 above. Let the players on that court return the ball to you.
