3 Welcome We are so very proud to have you here with us in London for the 10th Edition of these Championships and workshops. With around 30 different countries represented it is a truly international Championship experience Jive Addiction has been at the forefront in the development of West Coast Swing in Europe since 2004, it has been a passion of ours from the outset. In the early days we flew in many of the top US Pro s for our mixed dance events 3 or 4 times a year. In 2007, with the introduction of the WCS Champs, we became the very first World Swing Dance Council Registry Event outside the USA. Being voted the Best International West Coast Swing Event in 2011 at the Westie Awards in the USA was a very proud moment on our West Coast Swing journey. Over time these championships have evolved into the & European Championships, and this year is our 10th Annual celebration of West Coast Swing. Our goal, as it has always been, is to continue the development and growth of the dance and to highlight the European presence in the international west coast swing community, honouring its rich history and maintaining its true spirit. Check out time is 11am, but a later checkout may be possible upon request at Hotel reception. Internet access Free WiFi throughout the Hotel. 5 Wristbands Please wear your event wristband at all times. You need this to enter all of the weekends activities including, workshops, social dancing and competitions. Please be kind to our door staff and display your wristband clearly when you enter. You also need to show your wristband when ordering drinks in the Bijou or Atrium bars and both restaurants to obtain your 20% discount. Please take care of your wristband, if you lose it you are liable to pay a fee for a replacement. Take care of our dance floors! Please help us take care of the beautiful floors provided by XL Dancefloors as you will soon find out, these are some of the most beautiful and well sprung portable dance floors in the World. So please; no talc, no drinks or liquid, food, chairs, tables, wheels, carts or inappropriate footwear on the dance floors. Only recognised dance shoes must be worn. Thank you for your help! Personal Property Please be careful with your bags and personal property at all times. Do not carry valuables or important possessions. The Organisers and Radisson Blu staff hold no responsibility for your bags or personal property, so please take care. Photography An official event photographer will be present throughout, but you are allowed to click away as you like. Please share your photographs with us: tag them EU and post them on the Championships Event facebook page. Filming of the Competitions YES! You are allowed to film the contests. We encourage you to film the competitions and share your footage online. Please post the links on the Championship s Event facebook page. Event Information Workshop Notebook At the end of each workshop your instructors are invited to give a demonstration of what has been taught for you to film. Disclaimer West Coast Swing is an aerobic activity and dancers participate at all times at their own risk, fully accepting and understanding that the organisers and any service providers to them cannot be held liable under any circumstances. Chilled Water Freely available outside each dance room throughout the day and during all social dancing sessions. DRINK 20% DISCOUNT Don t miss out! Be sure to show your event wristband when ordering alcohol, soft drinks tea or coffee in either the Atrium or Bijou bars. This 20% discount is also available in the Annayu and Steak & Lobster restaurants. Breakfast Breakfast vouchers will be given to all our guests staying at the hotel during the event and these are to be handed over to Radisson staff each morning. 6 WCS Levels We want EVERYONE to enjoy and get the most out of the workshops this weekend. This means being realistic and ONLY attending workshops that are appropriate to your current level of WCS dance experience. Please respect and be fair to your fellow dancers. If you are struggling in a workshop you are NOT at the right level for your current experience. Your workshop instructors have been asked to monitor attendees at all workshops to ensure they are in the appropriate level for their current dance abilities. NOVICE (Guide Level 3) You know the basics of West Coast Swing (sugar push, left side pass, right side underarm turn, tuck turn and whip). You have been dancing WCS for at least 12 months and don t have to count. You may have competed in Newcomer or Novice previously, but want to take your WCS to the next level and learn cool new moves, shapes and variations. You may sometimes lose connection to your partner and want to work on technique, timing and musicality. INTERMEDIATE (Guide Level 4+) You don t have a problem dancing to different tempos and feel comfortable dancing with different level dancers. You regularly attend Intermediate+ level workshops, intensives, WSDC events and have a minimum of 12 WSDC Novice points or the required experience gained through regular social dancing. You want to learn more footwork and to improve your own style and musicality, learning how to accent music. You re ready to learn more complex patterns and introduce them into your dance. ADVANCED/ALL STAR Level 5+ (Intermediate/Advanced/All star dancers and qualified teachers) Fast paced workshops aimed at advanced+ dancers. You need a minimum of 20 Intermediate WSDC points, although it is possible to audition. It will be fast paced and tailored to the needs of higher level dancers, covering advanced technique and honing the performance to prepare for competition. 6

Friday 17:00 to 20:00 Saturday 12:00 to 14:30 The Relative Placement System is used to judge all Championship competitions. Competitors will be judged using the following criteria: 1. Timing How your body connects to the music. Swing is a dance beginning on the downbeat. Timing extends to much more finer distinctions than a single beat. It includes fractionally ahead or behind, as well as matching the syncopated swing of the music. 2. Technique How well you do what you do. How well competitors execute the movements comprising their dance, constitutes technique. Judges are looking for good footwork, balance, control, frame, how well turns and spins are executed, and control of arms and hands. 3. Teamwork How well you work together. Swing is a connected, partner dance. The demonstration of this connection and the appearance of lead/follow or action/reaction between the partners is an expected part of any competition. It is the ability to work together as a team. One partner ignoring or out-dancing the other, or jeopardising the safety of the other (or other competitors), indicates poor teamwork. 4. Content/Choreography What you do. The selection and order of movements and transitions executed during a dance comprises choreography. Good choreography demonstrates an intimate connection with the music and its phrasing, as well as variety and contrast of movements. 5. Presentation/Showmanship How well you sell what you do. To create an atmosphere of excitement by inviting and generating interest in a performance is the desired effect of good presentation. While providing a good show is one aspect of presentation, a good show is not a substitute for good dancing. 10

11 Information for Competitors Competitor Numbers Must be pinned at all four corners. Must be worn on your back, hips or bottom Do NOT wear on your arms or legs. For couples competitions, only the leader wears a number. In the preliminary rounds of Jack & Jill Divisions both leaders and followers wear their own distinctive numbers. Only the leader wears a number once you subsequently become a dance couple. Before each competition All competitors must be in the Ballroom at least 15 minutes before their competition is scheduled to start. The schedule is very tight, so don t be late! If you are late, you will lose your place! For all Jack & Jill Division prelims, please be waiting in the competitor s area near the bar in the atrium immediately outside the Ballroom. Please be quiet and listen to event staff instructions. The staff will line you up, in order, to be called for the competition. Pay attention to your position in line (try to remember who is next to you). Please pay attention to our MC for information about competitions. When you are called out for your competition, please walk quickly onto the dance floor. Stand in a line with followers to your left and display your number to the judges. At the end of each competition When you stop dancing, return to your line in the original order you were called out in. Display your number to the judges and wait for the MC s instruction to leave the floor. Classic Division Music Competitors MUST bring their Routine music on a USB stick and hand to the Competition DJ by 11am on the day of the competition. Results After the preliminary rounds, the list of semi-finalists and Finalists for each division will be posted in the Atrium near the bar outside the Ballroom. Please check to see if you have made semi-finals and Finals of any of your competitions. Placements and winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on Sunday. 13 Spirit Award Outstanding social dancing is deserving of reward, and we will recognise one leader and one follower with our Spirit Award. The judges are anonymous and will be observing social dancing all weekend. All attendees, from beginners to pros, are automatically signed up. The judges will be looking for dancers who: Dance with people of all skill levels Extend invitations to (and accept invitations from) strangers Pay special attention to beginners and newcomers Have fun and don t take themselves too seriously Make every partner s dance enjoyable The Spirit Award for exceptional performance is given to one leader and one follower who have exemplified the spirit of the dance throughout the weekend. This year s winners will be announced during the Awards on Sunday evening. They will receive complimentary admission to next year s event and a trophy. WCS dancing is, above all, a social activity.
