21 2012 isu four continents figure skating championships resting place Skate-like bench serves as memorial to Broadmoor skaters, coaches By Jennifer Meuli Overlooking the lake, in a quaint little spot by the trees, rests a peculiar gray bench. Its backdrop is a mountainside fronted by a luxurious hotel. With its base on the ground, two necks of support rise up and attach to a long, flat seat. On one side, the base of the granite bench curls up and over the end of the seat. It resembles an ice skate. Fifty years ago, this scenic spot, located at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., portrayed a different view. Instead of tourists strolling along the lakeside, it was a gathering place for world-class figure skaters trying to catch a breather in between practices at the Broadmoor World Arena. Among the skaters was Edi Scholdan, coach at the Broadmoor Skating Club, who was known to sit outside the old ice palace with his team, laughing and reading Dear Abby columns. The bench now stands as a memorial to those skaters. On Feb. 15, 1961, the entire U.S. World Figure Skating Team, including eight members of the Broadmoor Skating Club, lost their lives in a plane crash near Brussels, Belgium, while traveling to the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. On Feb. 15, 1964, three years after the crash, a skate-like bench was unveiled at The Broadmoor in remembrance of the Broadmoor Skating Club members who perished. The memorial represents a skate blade and functions as a bench, said Beth Davis, archivist at The Broadmoor. It is set beside the lake in front of the location of the World Arena, where Edi and the skaters made a habit to rest between lessons and practice sessions. The engraved bench reads: In Memoriam Feb. 15, Dedicated by friends to those who lost their lives while en route to the World Figure Skating Championships. Bill Haigler unveils the memorial skate bench On the side of the seat are the during a ceremony on names of those from the Broadmoor Feb. 15, who perished in the accident: Steffi and Sherri Westerfeld, Edi and Jimmy Scholdan, Greg and Nathalie Kelley, Laurie and William Hickox. Bill Haigler designed the bench and it was made by Richard Wilhelm of Wilhelm Monuments, L.L.C. His son, Dick Wilhelm, was a member of the Broadmoor Skating Club and took lessons from Scholdan. It was kind of a small community then, and the skating community all knew each other very well, Dick said. I was only 11 years old when the plane crashed. Everybody was in such shock at the time. The Broadmoor World Arena has since been torn down, yet continues to honor the skaters who died, with the bench resting in front of where the building was located. It s not uncommon, locals say, for a tourist or two to stop to gaze at the unique bench, bend down to decipher the etchings in the stone and have a seat in a moment of tribute to those who died on that February day. 19

26 2012 isu four continents figure skating championships GEOFF ROBINS/AFP/Getty Images) Broadmoor SC enjoys rich tradition of excellence By Troy Schwindt Christy Krall enjoyed a great career here as a skater at the Broadmoor SC. This week, she'll coach World champion Patrick Chan and U.S. bronze medalist Agnes Zawadzki at the Four Continents Championships U.S. champion Ryan Bradley perfected his craft as a member of the Broadmoor SC in Colorado Springs. One of the highly anticipated performances of this week s Four Continents Championships is expected to come from World champion Patrick Chan, who trains right here in Colorado Springs, Colo., under longtime Broadmoor Skating Club coach and former Olympian Christy Haigler Krall. Chan, the Canadian champion who has won his last seven competitions, including the past two Grand Prix Final titles, moved to Colorado Springs in January 2010 to train with Krall, who is known for her technical expertise. For Krall, who won three U.S. medals and placed seventh at the 1964 Olympic Winter Games, being able to coach Chan in her hometown as a member of the Broadmoor SC will be a highlight in her storied career. I m honored to be able to work with Patrick on a daily basis, said Krall, who grew up and still lives right around the corner from the historic Broadmoor Hotel. Who gets the opportunity to work with the world s best? I know he ll put on a premier performance. It s going to be special for Patrick to be able to perform in front of the Colorado Springs audience. Krall calls Four Continents a mini Super Bowl of skating, with many of the sport s top athletes converging on the Pikes Peak region for this prestigious international event, which commenced in Colorado Springs also hosted the Four Continents Championships in 2006 and Growing up as a member of the Broadmoor SC, Krall said Colorado Springs enjoys a rich skating tradition that she feels fortunate to be associated with. Her father, Bill Haigler, was the president of the Broadmoor SC in the 1960s. Edi Scholdan, Carlo Fassi, Ron Baker, Kathy Casey, Diana Ronayne, Janet Champion and Tom Zakrajsek are just a few members of a coaching fraternity at the Broadmoor SC that Krall feels privileged to be forever linked to. The late William Thayer Tutt, and Bill Hybl and the El Pomar Foundation have and continue to make major contributions to the sport of figure skating and hockey in the Colorado Springs region, Krall added. Casey, one of Krall s coaching associates at the Broadmoor SC for the last two decades, arrived in Colorado Springs in 1990 to help fill a void left with the departure of Fassi, a coaching icon in the sport. Casey, a Great Falls, Mont., native, had spent several years coaching in Tacoma, Wash., before finally being convinced to move to Colorado Springs and join the Broadmoor SC. In 1990, the Broadmoor World Arena was located at its original site on the grounds of the Broadmoor Hotel. One of Casey s favorite memories of her early years in Colorado Springs was the ice shows held there on Friday nights. The kids would put on their costumes on and the hotel would fill the house, Casey said. Those shows gave them tons of experience of being out in front of people. Casey went on to help guide the careers of such skating stars as two-time U.S. champion Scott Davis, three-time U.S. titlist Jill Trenary and Olympic champion Scott Hamilton during his professional career. In 1993, the Broadmoor closed the venerable arena which opened in 1938 to make room for a $27 million expansion of the hotel resort. The Broadmoor SC relocated its current training facilities just down the road to the Colorado Springs World Arena and Ice Hall. Despite the change of location, the magic followed the Photo by Paul Harvath 24

27 Coaches Christy Krall, left, and Kathy Casey (red coat) give technical direction during a local practice session. Broadmoor SC to its new digs, where banners of past Broadmoor skating greats such as Olympic champion Peggy Fleming and Hayes and David Jenkins hang from the rafters. It s magical and I think it s because of the atmosphere, Casey said. We ve always had a lot of ice time and we ve always had good coaches. Good coaches attract good skaters and good skaters attract more good skaters. It s kind of a tradition that the club has had and luckily we ve had the right people in the right places at the right time to make it work. Two of those great skaters are 2011 U.S. champion Ryan Bradley and 2010 U.S. titlist Rachael Flatt. Bradley, one of the sport s great showmen, came to Colorado Springs in the late 1990s from St. Joseph, Mo., to train at the Broadmoor. Growing up in a small town I always felt like a big fish in a small pond, said Bradley, who was coached by Zakrajsek and his sister Becky. When I moved to the Broadmoor I suddenly realized how great skaters could be. Being on the ice with international medalists and World team members was an unbelievable experience. The discipline and work-ethic instilled in the Broadmoor skaters truly changed my career and my life. Bradley spent much of his career training alongside threetime U.S. titlist Jeremy Abbott and 2009 U.S. silver medalist Brandon Mroz. Training with my teammates really pushed us to new 2010 U.S. champion Rachael Flatt spent a decade training as a member of the Broadmoor SC. levels, Bradley said. We constantly fed off of each other s energy and reached greater heights than I think we would have on our own. When you weren t feeling great you always had someone there to pat your back before giving you a swift kick a little lower. That way we never lost a day of great training. We all have gone our separate directions now, but I know that they made their mark on my skating. Flatt arrived at the Broadmoor from California when she was 8 years old and trained under Zakrajsek for a decade before leaving Colorado Springs in September 2011 for college at Stanford University. Being able to train in the mecca of amateur sports was an experience she ll always cherish, she said. Training with such amazing athletes at the World Arena and Olympic Training Center was incredible, Flatt said. There is such an amazing level of inspiration here between having as much history of figure skating as we do in Colorado Springs as well as a wealth of history of Olympians at the Olympic Training Center. 30 2012 isu four continents figure skating championships viewer's guide There are five separate disciplines or divisions in competitive figure skating: ladies singles, men s singles, pairs, ice dance and synchronized skating. This guide represents the first four divisions, all of which are competed the 2012 Four Continents Championships. SKILL LEVELS creasingly more difficult skills as well as different rules and guidelines. The five skill levels are: Senior (Most Advanced) Junior Novice Intermediate Juvenile (Beginning) SENIOR PROGRAMS This guide focuses on the top skill level senior which is competed at the World Figure Skating Championships and Olympic Winter Games. The fol- Ladies & Men s singles Within ladies, men s, pairs and ice dance, there are five different competitive skill levels that are based on proficiency tests. Each level draws on similar techniques but adheres to inlowing chart outlines the programs competed during a senior-level competition: There are no age requirements to compete as a senior in the United States. To compete as a senior internationally, the following age restrictions apply: at the World Championships and Olympic Winter Games, skaters must have turned 15 by July 1 preceding the events. In all other international events, skaters must have turned 14 by July 1 preceding the events. LADIES MEN S PAIRS Short Program 2:50 Free Skate 4:00 +/- 0:10 Short Program 2:50 Free Skate 4:30 +/- 0:10 Short Program 2:50 Free Skate 4:30 +/- 0:10 ICE DANCING Compulsory Dance time based on dance Short Dance 2:30 +/- 0:10 Free Dance 4:00 +/- 0:10 Form, style, technique, concentration and the ability to perform under great pressure are the key requirements in ladies and men s singles. The rules are similar for both the ladies and men s divisions. Each competition is composed of two separate parts: the short program, skated first, followed by the free skate. SHORT PROGRAM The short program consists of seven required moves or elements with connecting steps: three jumps, three spins and one step sequence. The moves may be done in any order within the 2:50 time limit, to music selected by the skater. Alissa Czisny FREE SKATE The free skate has a length limitation of 4:00 for senior ladies and 4:30 for senior men (+/- 10 seconds for each). Skaters select their own music and theme, and choreograph the jumps, spins, footwork and interpretive moves to best display their technical and artistic skills. The well-balanced free skate for sets a maximum number of a particular element; it does not set a minimum. If a skater performs more than the well-balanced program elements, there are no deductions, but the skater will not receive credit for these additional elements. The skater should pay close attention to interesting transitions, connecting steps and movements between elements. Richard Dornbush 28

31 2012 isu four continents figure skating championships PAIRS Pairs skating is essentially free skating performed in unison by partners, with the addition of daring and difficult overhead lifts, throw jumps and spins. The key to pairs skating is exact timing in unison. Whether the partners are together or apart, their movements should be synchronized with matching body lines, gestures and footwork. SHORT PROGRAM The pairs short program consists of seven required elements, which include overhead lifts, side-by-side solo jumps and solo spins done in unison, spirals and a death spiral, all performed to music of the skaters choice. FREE SKATE Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig The free skate consists of technical and artistic moves choreographed to best display the skaters individual strengths, skills and ability to perform as a team. Shadow skating, in which partners perform identical maneuvers some distance apart, and mirror skating, where the pair s moves are in opposite directions and mirror each other, are challenging aspects of pairs skating. ice dance Ice dance, the newest Olympic figure skating event (introduced in 1976), was first seen at the World Championships in 1952, despite having been a popular recreational sport since the turn of the century. Unlike pairs skating, which features overhead lifts and jumps, ice dancing is based on the different aspects of dance, including rhythm, interpretation of the music and precise steps. Its beauty lies in its limitless creativity, choreography and its theatrical and innovative aspects. No overhead lifts or jumps of more than one revolution are allowed. An ice dancing competition is made up of two parts: a 2:50 short dance and a 4:00 free dance. Unlike singles and pairs skating, ice dancing permits vocal music. SHORT DANCE The short dance consists of required elements including dance lifts, spins, twizzles, step sequences and sequences or sections of pattern dances. Teams choose their own music and choreography, but it must conform to the specified rhythms and requirements. FREE DANCE Meryl Davis and Charlie White In the free dance, skaters display their full range of technical skills, interpretation and inventiveness to music, and choreography of their own choice. Teams use changes of position, intricate and varied dance holds, dance lifts, spins and difficult footwork to present their best ice dancing skills. 29

32 2012 isu four continents figure skating championships keeping score Understanding the international judging system The international judging system (IJS) is used at all ISU competitions as well as most U.S. Figure Skating qualifying events. The IJS is based on cumulative points achieved during each skater s/team s performance. Under the IJS, points are awarded for a technical score combined with points awarded for five program components skating skills, transitions/linking footwork and movement, performance/execution, choreography/composition, and interpretation. Penalties are given for program length violations and other violations. If a skater performs more than the defined well-balanced program elements, there are no deductions, but the additional elements will not be calculated into the skater s score. If a skater performs less than the required elements, he or she receives fewer points, but not deductions. (The exception to this is ice dance, which takes a 1.0 deduction for each extra element.) Judges no longer compare skaters and figure out where to place them. Instead, they evaluate the qualities of each performance. Starting order does not impact a skater s score. A skater can win coming from a lower position. A maximum of nine judges make up the judges panel at a competition. In ISU events, the judges identities are not associated with their scores: only the reviewers will know who gave which scores. For U.S. competitions, all judges scores and names are public. The IJS also uses a trimmed mean method, where the high and low points are ignored and the average of the remaining points is calculated. HOW IT WORKS THE PLAYERS A technical panel with five people works as a team and has direct communication. These positions are a technical controller, technical specialist, assistant technical specialist, data operator and video replay operator. During each performance, the technical specialist identifies the elements and the level of difficulty of each element, if applicable, as defined by the ISU. This allows the judge to concentrate on marking the quality of each element. Their marks are based on set criteria for each element and provide a comprehensive assessment of each skater s skills and performance. The technical controller and a second technical specialist support the primary technical specialist to ensure that all elements are identified correctly. Any element can be reviewed either by the technical controller, the technical specialist, the assistant technical specialist or the judges. Final decisions on elements and levels are determined by the majority opinion of the three technical positions. Both specialists and the controller are recorded with an audio tape during each program, and video will be available to verify the calls. The elements can be reviewed after a skater s performance, and scores can be changed accordingly. The scores are final once they are posted and announced to the public. Under the IJS, the judges focus completely on scoring the quality of each technical element and the five program components for each skater. The computer keeps track of comparative scores, records results and calculates totals to determine rankings. TECHNICAL SCORE In the technical score, each element of the program is assigned a base value. A group of experts, including experienced skaters and coaches, have determined the base value of each technical element. These base values give the skaters credit for every element they perform. Some elements such as spins and step sequences have levels of difficulty on which the base values are established. During the program, when a skater executes an element, the technical specialist identifies the element. The judge then grades the quality of the element within steps of +3 to -3 (=7steps), each step represents a special value, which is added. For instance, a double Axel s base value is 3.3, so a skater has the potential to earn 4.8 points for that jump or as little as 1.8. In this example, the positive and negative grades are 0.5 points each. The sum of all elements with the grade of execution forms the technical score. The base values for all elements are included in the ISU s Scale of Values chart. The judging panel s scores for each program component are multiplied by a set factor to ensure the technical score and the program component score are approximately balanced. The technical score is added to the program component scores. The skater with the highest competition score is declared the winner. For more information about the IJS, including a complete listing of element base values, visit www. usfigureskating.org. PROGRAM COMPONENTS In addition to the technical score, the judges will award points on a scale from 0.25 to 10 (with increments of 0.25) for five program components to grade the overall presentation. Skating Skills: Overall skating quality, including edge control and flow over the ice surface (edges, steps, turns, speed, etc.), clarity of technique and the use of effortless power to accelerate and vary speed. 30
