4 President s Message On behalf of the Campbell River Skating Club I welcome you to our next season of skating. Much of the information in this Handbook remains unchanged from last year; however, there are changes so happy reading! Our web site is also a wealth of information so please feel free to check us out there as well -- I am always open to receiving your feedback so if there is anything that can help us improve in the way we deliver our programs or if we can improve our administrative processes to help you better I would love to hear from you. You can info@campbellriverskatingclub.com. As fundraising is such an important piece to our Club, you will see that we have made some additional changes and built on the success from last year. Therefore the Campbell River Skating Club is asking that all members participate in fundraising activities throughout the skating season. Fundraising helps our club and ensures affordable fees for families. Important Information for Fundraising in 2015/2016 Fundraising for our club is important and we ask for everyone s support. All skaters and skaters families benefit from the fundraising we do. We are creating events, selling items, and doing promotions to fulfill and exceed our fundraising commitments to support all skaters and the Club. 5 SKATE CANADA POSITION STATEMENT ON BULLYING Bullying is a form of harassment and is considered to be personal harassment as defined in the Skate Canada Membership Complaint Policy section 9. (c). Skate Canada s complaint policies are contained in the Policies and Procedures section of the rule book available on the Members Only portion of the Skate Canada web site under Technical & Programs > Rules > 2013 Official Rule Book > Policies & Procedures > Bylaws. STATEMENT OF INTENT Skate Canada strongly condemns bullying, will not tolerate bullying by any of its members and is committed to raising awareness of this issue and preventing and eliminating bullying behavior within Skate Canada. Skate Canada recognizes that bullying can have a serious adverse impact on personal dignity, self-esteem, confidence, personal safety, performance, enjoyment of skating and of life itself. All Skate Canada members have the right to participate in a safe, supportive and caring environment free from harassment and they have the responsibility to contribute to the protection and maintenance of this environment. WHAT IS BULLYING? Bullying is a form of personal harassment and includes physical or verbal abuse that occurs once or repeatedly and may involve an imbalance of power. Bullying is intended to hurt and humiliate the victim and may include: - Insulting or derogatory remarks or gestures - Rude or vulgar language or gestures - Shouting, yelling, swearing, name-calling - Persistent unwarranted criticism - Public ridicule - Verbal, written or physical threats and intimidation - Hitting, kicking, pushing or other types of forceful physical contact - Bullying may occur in-person or through electronic means including , texting and social media. WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE BULLIED? If a member has experienced bullying behavior, or has witnessed another member being bullied, the member may submit a complaint to the Complaint Review Officer at the Skate Canada national office as per the process in the Skate Canada Membership Complaints, Hearing and Investigation Procedures Policy. 8 PROGRAM DEFINITIONS The programs offered may change from year to year depending on registration and interest. However, the majority of the programs listed below are our foundation programs. PRE CANSKATE Tuesdays, 10-10:45 a.m. Pre CanSkate or fondly referred to as our Tiny Tots is a fun introduction for pre-schoolers aged 3 to 5 years where they Learn to Skate through music and games. Group lessons are Tuesday mornings with Block A starting September 22, Instruction will be given by Skate Canada certified Coaches with assistance from Adult Program Assistants. CANSKATE Mondays 3:30-4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays 5-6pm NEW AND EXCITING CanSkate Program is Skate Canada's flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages. When you sign up for CanSkate you will be in a program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. You will earn badges and other incentives as you learn fundamental skating skills. Lessons are given in a group format and led by NCCP Certified Professional Coaches. Professional coaches are assisted by trained Program Assistants. All skaters working on up to and including stage 5 will be required to wear a CSA approved skating/hockey helmet on the ice. Higher than stage 5 is up to the discretion of the parent(s)/guardian(s). Both Coaches will determine when a skater is ready to move to the STARSkate program. At that time the Executive will coordinate a meeting between Parent and each Coach respectively. From there the Parent choses a Coach for his/her skater. STARSKATE [Skills, Tests, Achievement, Recognition this is what STARSkate is all about!] Private lessons are available once a skater moves into the STARSkate program. When a skater registers he/she is paying for ice; Coach costs are billed directly by the Coach to the skater. September 2015 April of 19

9 STARSkate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating. Unique in Canada, this program teaches figure skating skills in a group and/or private lesson format in a progressive and sequential manner and includes specifically designed awards and incentives. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system. Skaters do specific skills, dance and free skate lessons with a coach geared to a skater s ability, test and competition level and interest. Skaters should be able to work on their own. Off-ice training is also recommended (e.g. dance or fitness). Most participate in tests and compete. The STARSkate program consists of figure skating skills in four areas Skating Skills, Ice Dance, Free Skate and Interpretive. Each area is divided into the following levels: Primary Level Tests Skating Skills: Preliminary, Junior Bronze Free Skating: Preliminary, Junior Bronze Dance: Preliminary, Junior Bronze Interpretive: Introductory Intermediate Level Tests Skating Skills: Senior Bronze, Junior Silver Free Skating: Senior Bronze, Junior Silver Dance: Senior Bronze, Junior Silver Interpretive: Bronze Senior Level Tests Skating Skills: Senior Silver, Gold Free Skating: Senior Silver, Gold Dance: Senior Silver, Gold, Diamond Interpretive: Silver, Gold In the Campbell River Skating Club, Skaters need to pass their preliminary free skate to move to the Intermediate level; and, Skaters need to pass their junior bronze free skate to move to the Senior level. Dance Partnering and Tests Days are coordinated by the Program Coordinator and the Test Chair. Dates below are subject to change. Dance Partnering: January 31/16 Test Days: December 6/15 February 21 & April 17/16 September 2015 April of 19

10 Adults/Teens CanSkate (13 years+) Mondays 7:00-7:45 p.m. and Thursdays 7:45-8:45 p.m. Everyone welcome to come out and learn to skate at any age. There is a 45 minute group lesson taught by Jannine Ranniger. Adult/Teens Skate Mondays 6:45-7:30 p.m. and Thursdays 7:45-8:45 p.m. This program targets young and mature skaters that want to get back on the ice to get some exercise and hone their skills. If you are interested, there are private and group lessons available on this session. When you register you are paying for the ice; private lessons are available through our two Professional Club Coaches. Adult CanPower Mondays, 7:30-8:15 p.m. Teaches the players how to develop speed, power and agility on the ice through a variety of new techniques, drills and exercises. Players also develop power skating techniques and the goal is to continue to turn hockey players into powerful skaters by using these proven skills. This session is taught by Rae Anne Hesketh for the full 45 minutes. Youth CanPower (6 years and up) Thursdays, 3:30-4:15 p.m. Teaches the players how to develop speed, power and agility on the ice through a variety of new techniques, drills and exercises. Players also develop power skating techniques and the goal is to continue to turn hockey players into powerful skaters by using these proven skills. This session is taught by Rae Anne Hesketh for the full 45 minutes. Buy On Ice Procedures If you are a STARSkate, Intermediate or Senior Skater you have the opportunity to Buy-On to a session that you are not registered for but qualify to skate on. Often this happens when a coach, skater and/or parent want an extra session to work on a difficult skating skill, or a little extra ice time when preparing for a test or competition. A registered skater is someone who is already skating on other Club sessions and wishes to skate an extra session but does not wish to purchase the ice time for the remainder of the year. If a session is full, then no Buy-Ons are allowed. The cost is $13/hr for a skater that is registered in our regular sessions and $20/hr for a skater who is not registered in a regular session. When you choose to come for an extra Buy-On session and BEFORE going on the ice: 1. Please sign in on the clipboard that is located on the counter under the window. September 2015 April of 19

11 2. Pay the current fee by cheque or cash. Ensure that the skater s full name, session(s) chosen and money are all together in a ziplock bag (located outside the Skating Club office) and place the payment and information into the door mail slot. SKATER S CODE OF CONDUCT On Ice Rules: 1. Skaters are to be at the rink on time for all practice and lesson sessions. Speak with your coach if there is a problem being on time. 2. No food, gum or drinks other than water bottles on the ice. 3. No fooling around on the ice (pushing, racing, kicking the ice etc.) No rowdiness or swearing will be tolerated. If a skater continually misbehaves, the coaches have the right to ask the skater to leave the ice for the remainder of the session. 4. If a skater should fall on the ice, it is important that the skater gets up immediately if not injured. Failing to do so is dangerous to the skater who has fallen and other skaters. 5. For safety reasons, long hair is to be tied neatly back from the skater s face. 6. Skaters having their solo played have the right of way. 7. In Skills & Dance skaters having their dance/skill music played have right of way. 8. Skater or Skaters in a lesson and Coaches giving a lesson have right of way. 9. Skaters are not allowed on the ice before their allotted time and must leave the ice promptly at the end of their allotted ice session. 10. Players boxes are out of bounds at all times (except for tying skates). 11. Skaters are expected to work on all ice sessions without standing around wasting time as this impedes the progress of other skaters. 12. A skater must get permission from a Coach to leave the ice for any reason. 13. Please try to give your coach as much advance notice as possible if you need to cancel a lesson. Lessons not canceled in advance are subject to a charge. 14. STARSkate/Intermediate/Senior skaters - before leaving the ice must fill holes. Coaches will provide direction. Dress Code: 1. Proper Skating Clothes must be worn at all time. (No jeans, sweat pants, hats or hooded sweatshirts). 2. No bellies showing if wearing a skirt wear either a bodysuit or long top (doesn t pull-up when you raise your arms). 3. No large hair items or jewelry (earrings, etc.) only small hair items and jewelry that will not fall on to the ice fallen items on the ice are dangerous to skaters. Club Rules: 1. Courtesy must be shown to all Coaches, fellow skaters, and Executives. 2. Bullying of any kind will not be tolerated and if behaviour is not corrected, suspension, without reimbursement will be enforced. Ref. Skate Canada Membership Complaint Policy section 9(c). 3. Absolutely no skaters in the stands with skates on (facility rules). A Skate Canada Skater s Agreement is to be signed by parents and their skaters prior to the skater being permitted on the ice. 12 SKATE CANADA S PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT Skate Canada is committed to ensuring that all skaters have the opportunity to participate in a safe and welcoming environment that is encouraging and promotes their overall development. Parents have an enormous influence on skaters experiences in the sport. The quality of a skater s experience is determined by their relationships with parents and the manner in which parents conduct themselves in the Skate Canada environment. In this code parents shall refer to parents and guardians. This code applies to all parents who are members of Skate Canada or have children who are members of Skate Canada. Parents shall abide by this code at all times while participating in any Skate Canada club or school, competition, or activity. - All parents are expected to conduct themselves in a responsible manner consistent with the values of fair play, integrity, open communication and mutual respect. - Parents shall always model positive and responsible behaviour and communicate with their son/daughter that they expect them to do the same. Parents will assume the major responsibility for their son/daughter s on ice conduct and attitude. - Parents shall at all times treat all individuals and property with dignity, courtesy and respect, including but not limited to skaters, coaches, officials, volunteers, other parents, and all other individuals that are part of the club, skating school, Section or Skate Canada. - Parents shall refrain from any behaviour, or comments, which are profane, insulting, harassing, sexist, racist, abusive, disrespectful or otherwise offensive without hostility or violence. - Parents shall emphasize the importance of values like sportsmanship, respect, cooperation, competition and teamwork to their son/daughter offering praise for competing fairly, participation and skill development. - Parents shall model and encourage their son/daughter to maintain a healthy balance between skating and life. (i.e., school, other activities, social life, etc.) - Parents shall model and encourage balanced, healthy food choices and subscribing to an active and healthy lifestyle. - Parents shall set high, but reasonable expectations for their son/daughter s participation in skating focusing on development and enjoyment for the child. - Parents shall instill confidence in their son/daughter s ability and skill development, always avoiding comparisons with other skaters. - Parents shall celebrate the acquisition of skills and goals achieved by their son/daughter. - Parents, along with the professional coach and the athlete, shall be considered members of a team whose main concern is the child s overall progress and development. Parents shall respect that the professional coach is responsible and empowered for the on-ice and off-ice development of the athlete. A parent s role shall be to take a healthy interest in their child s progress and development and be responsible for the child s nutrition, rest, adherence to off-ice training regimen set by the coach or other fitness professional, overall health, life-balance, and moral and emotional support. - Parents shall ensure their son/daughter wears proper skating clothing and equipment. - Parents shall never provide alcohol or drugs to minors in a Skate Canada environment. - Parents shall never provide or advocate the use of performance enhancing drugs or substances. 13 - Parents shall avoid any conduct, which brings their club, skating school, Section or Skate Canada, into disrepute, including but not limited to abusive use of alcohol, non-medical use of drugs and gambling. - Parents shall openly support and uphold this code of conduct policy and take action and steps to ensure other parents follow and uphold this code of conduct policy. - Parents shall adhere to the policies, procedures, rules, standards, and ethics of Skate Canada at all times. FINANCIAL INFORMATION Please address any questions of a financial nature through the Treasurer at info@campbellriverskatingclub.com. Refunds Refunds will only be made to skaters who must withdraw for a medical reason. A letter from your Doctor is required and a $10 cancellation fee is charged. Skaters who miss their session(s) for any reason (other than error by the CRSC or having to give up ice if the STORM makes the playoffs) are not entitled to additional ice time, refunds or credits. Coaching Fees (STARSkate, Intermediate, Senior) Stroking is a shared activity between our two Professional Club Coaches and they bill accordingly ($3/session). This is the only class where you will be billed by both Coaches. When a skater registers for Stroking they are paying whether they attend or not. FUND RAISING The Campbell River Skating Club (CRSC) is a non-profit volunteer-run club. Fundraising is an important and integral part of maintaining our Club. Funds raised help offset our operating expenses, keep registration fees reasonable, and supports fun days and special events such as Galas, Ice Shows and Awards celebrations. We need the support of all of you and there are so many options available to you! Read on. And, if fundraising isn t your thing maybe you would like to sit at the Executive table or participate by becoming a representative for your skater s group? We are also looking for people to assist at our CanSkate Welcome Desk on Mondays and Wednesdays. There are lots of jobs that we need help with so just ask and you can record your time on your Fundraising/Volunteer tracking form. September 2015 April of 19

14 Refundable Volunteer Bond Payment For all registered skaters we request a cheque for $200 postdated to March 1, The bond and volunteer time is per family not per skater. Families are required to contribute six (6) hours of volunteer time during the current skating year (September-April) in order to get their cheque returned. A Volunteer/Fundraising Tracking form will be given to you to keep track of your time. All forms are to be returned by March 1 st. Fundraising Raffle First Prize: Westjet Return Trip for Two We are hosting a raffle for One Return Trip for Two (2) people to any scheduled WestJet destination (charts exempt). All proceeds from this fundraising raffle will go directly to set off ice costs, possibly clothing discounts, and ice show, which benefit all skaters. Tickets: 3 for $20.00 Raffle draw date is March 1, 2016 We are asking parents, skaters and supporters to sell tickets; one booklet of (10) to support this raffle. That would mean skaters have to either keep the tickets themselves or sell to 5 people. Tickets will be given out in October The skaters who sell the most tickets will win $100, $60 for second and $40 for third. Conditions: 1. Voucher includes all air travel fees, taxes and surcharges and is valid on WestJet flights only, not valid for flights on or continued on WestJet s code share partners. 2. All gifts of flight are subject to promotional space availability at the time of booking. Peak dates such as statutory holidays and airline blackout periods (such as Christmas, Easter, long weekends and Spring Break, etc.) are considered blackout periods and are not available for gifts of flight. 3. Flights must be round trips. Open jaw bookings are not permitted. Flights must depart from city A to city B and return from city B to city A. 4. This prize is valid for travel until March This prize is not valid for redemption on WestJet Vacations packages or with WestJet charter or code share partners. 6. Changes and extensions to the expiry date are not permitted. Changes to travel dates or passenger names are not permitted once a booking has been confirmed. 7. The individual booking the flight must be over the age of majority in their province. 8. This prize must be taken as offered and is neither transferable nor redeemable for cash. 9. This prize cannot be sold. In the event that it is, the certificate will become void. 10. WestJet is not responsible for lost or mishandled vouchers. Once a voucher has been delivered to the organization it is the responsibility of the organization to deliver and review rules with the winner. September 2015 April of 19

15 2nd Prize Spa Day at the Kingfisher 3rd Prize Canucks tickets If each family purchases $ they can sell or keep them, collection of monies is incorporated into the Volunteer bond cheque. Tickets will be provided at a later date for pick up. Reps will collect ticket stubs before draw date. Bagging Groceries We will be Bagging Groceries on Saturday, November 21, In order to accommodate Intermediate and Senior skaters, parents and Coaches, we can have shorter shifts and make it a longer day. Pizza Acropolis Steakhouse Pizza Fundraiser Acropolis will donate $5 from each Pizza sold. Information will be sent out once details are finalized. Bottle Recycle Each family will receive a bag at registration. When the bag is full it can be taken to one of two bottle recycle locations in Campbell River or info@campbellriverskatingclub.com and the bag will be picked up. We have accounts at Island Return It on Willow Street and North Island Bottle Depot and Recycling on Maple Street so just ask them to put it on the Campbell River Skating Club s account. Return your receipt to the Club s office ensuring your skater s name is on the back of the receipt; or staple it to your Volunteer/Fundraising tracking form. Skate-a-thon Information will be sent out once details are finalized. This is a great one to work off your six hours volunteer time. Tag Day Information will be sent out once details are finalized. Again, this is a great one to work off your six hours volunteer time. Thrifty Smile Card Program (ongoing fundraiser) Each family will receive a Thrifty Smile Card and information sheet. Each time you use your card, the CRSC will receive 5% of your purchases. Boston Pizza (ongoing fundraiser) When you eat at Boston Pizza, record CAMPBELL RIVER SKATING CLUB on the back of your receipt and put it in the container at the front desk when you leave. The CRSC will receive 5% of your purchase. September 2015 April of 19

16 Communications The majority of communications is done by so it is important that addresses are kept current. Also check out the Club web site for current information. Each Program also has a Rep. and Reps help the Coaches organize Fun Days and will be your first point of contact. Helmet Requirements All skaters up to level 5 CanSkate will be required to wear a CSA approved skating/hockey helmet on the ice. Higher than level 5 is up to the discretion of the parent(s)/guardian(s). Details can be found on the Skate Canada web site under the Members Only section. Volunteers If you have a special skill that you would like to share with the skaters in our Club, please let us know. We are looking for volunteers to fill a number of positions and this time can be put towards your fundraising voucher. A Volunteer list is posted on the Club bulletin board so feel free to check it out. AGM (Annual General Meeting) This meeting is held near the end of the Season. All members are encouraged to attend. Halloween Costume Party and Potluck This year we are going to host a Halloween Costume Party and Potluck; everyone invited! October 29 th ; potluck at 6:00pm with skating at 7:00pm following the Intermediate/Senior FreeSkate. 17 Clothing Exchange Program ( A process for selling apparel has been set up for those interested. Please note that due to space limitations in the Skating Club office, skates are to be retained by the seller. However, if you have skates to sell please forward the details/pictures to info@campbellriverskatingclub.com and it will be posted to the Club s web site. The process of the Clothing Exchange Program is listed below. Clothing or Items Wishing to be consigned: 1. Fill out a yellow sticky with the following: o Your Name and Address o Your Phone Number o Brief Description of Consignment Article o Desired Sale Price 2. Attach the yellow sticky to the garment or item with a paper clip and then hang or place the article behind the door where hangers and space are provided for consignment items. Items will then be received by consignment program volunteers and put into inventory. Owners of articles will be notified once their items have sold and payment is ready. Please note that the Club takes a 10% commission on all items sold. The CRSC will issue payment for consignment clothing once a month. Payments for items will be collected for the month and then processed within the first few days of the following month. Again, CRSC volunteers will notify the consignee when payment is ready. Clothing or Items Wishing to be purchased: 1. Please take off the tag that is attached to the item detailing the item inventory number, price and original owner of the item. 2. Place the inventory label with form of payment inside the Ziploc bag. o If paying by cash please put purchaser s name and contact information on a sticky with the payment so we know who has bought it. o If paying by cheque please make sure all cheques are payable to the Campbell River Skating Club (CRSC) and has the purchaser s name and contact information on the cheque. Another choice for selling skating related items is to post to our web site; there is no consignment fee in this instance. Fun Days The professional Coaches organize fun days throughout the year with assistance from the respective Representative for that group. September 2015 April of 19

18 TROPHIES AND AWARDS We recognize our skaters and volunteers annually. The trophies and awards, and their criteria, we offer are described below and the recipients, in a joint effort, are selected by our professional Coaches. Most Improved CanSkater this skater has shown measurable improvement, badges earned, quality of skating considered. Most Improved STARSkate, Intermediate and Senior measurable improvement, tests passed, competitive improvement and skating quality considered. Most Improved Teen/Adult measurable improvement and shows perseverance, commendable effort throughout the season. Program Assistant of the Year coaching instead of teaching or assisting the coach with the skaters. This skater is a role model and is dedicated to the skaters learning how to skate in our club. Junior / Senior Interpretive Crystal Partridge Memorial Award Interpretive (Artistic). Favourite part of skating was dance and designing her own dresses. Criteria interprets music well, is creative and show originality, consideration given to competitive placements in the interpretive events. Dance Award Junior & Senior skater who has passed the most dances. More credit given to higher dances. Senior Bronze is the cross over dance category. Skills Award Junior & Senior Cherise Henderson Memorial Award Skills (figures) Cherise loved figures today it would be skills and the artistic side of skating. She enjoyed working with children in the CanSkate program. When Cherise passed away she was still skating with our club and had been a member since Criteria skater who has passed skills tests. More credit given to higher skills. The Success Measured by Effort Award is donated by Rae Anne Hesketh and is awarded to the Hardest Trainer for each level in Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors. This award recognizes the skater that works hard and demonstrates improvements with their skating achieving their personal bests. Natalie Krivokuca Award STARSkate Super Series Final Provincial Championship. Criteria is for the skater who wins a medal at the super series final. Jannine Richardson-Ranniger Gold Feet Award Gold Test Achievement There are 6 Freeskate, 6 Skills, 5 Interpretive and 21 Dance tests. To achieve the gold test achievement status a skater must master and pass all tests in any one category Sportsmanship Award is supportive and gets along well with others. Displays a great attitude, shows leadership qualities and can be someone the skaters look to. Service Award Donated volunteer hours to club, helped with a positive attitude. Fundraising (Adult or child) number of fundraisers participated in. Amount of money raised. 19 PROCESS FOR CHOOSING A COACH When a skater starts in CanSkate they get the opportunity to learn from both CRSC Coaches. When the skater is ready to move up into the STARSkate program it is time to decide which Coach will exclusively teach your skater. A member of the Executive will contact the Parent and arrange meetings with each Coach. Once a parent has had the opportunity to meet with both Coaches, he/she decides which Coach best fits with what they hope to accomplish or what the individual needs may be of the skater. 20 I have coached skaters from Preliminary up to and including the Gold Levels in the Skate Canada Star Skate Test system in all disciplines. My skaters have competed in the Star Skate Competition Stream in all levels as well as skaters in the Competitive Stream who competed in Pre-Juvenile, Juvenile and Novice in both Singles and Pairs at the Skate Canada Challenge level. Experienced in: The development of all skaters in figure skating and hockey from the ground level up. I enhance their knowledge and skills to help them excel as athletes. My Coaching Philosophy: A coach is a mentor, a teacher, a role model and sometimes a friend. I am a positive coach and my first priority is the development of the skater. My goals are to build confidence and positive character traits such as discipline, self-motivation, self-worth and excitement for life. My desire is to see the skater learn with the knowledge I give them to effectively improve their skills. I set realistic goals. Through encouragement, I praise the skaters for their efforts and I feel communication is crucial for having a good relationship with the skaters.
