There is a Preseason Skate August 23 rd, 25 th, 26 th, 30 th and September 8 th and then we are back on the ice for the Fall session on Saturday September 9 th, 2018 ABOUT RIVERVIEW SKATING CLUB The Riverview Skating Club is a registered club of Skate Canada. The programs offered, the skills developed, and the instruction provided to our skaters all meet a specified standard that is consistent across Canada. Riverview Skating Club coaches are all certified through Skate Canada through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and they in turn train our volunteers to assist with on-ice instruction. Riverview Skating Club is the only Skate Canada registered club in West Hants. The club is non-profit and is run by volunteer Executive committee, coordinators and Coach s. Every program is instructed by professional coaches. The volunteers are comprised of parents of present and past skaters that have a keen interest in their children having a great skating club. STARSKATE In the previous Season we started the new StarSkate changes and this coming year the changes are mandatory. There will be a parent Information session on August 26 th, at 11:00 in the Warm room at the Newport Arena. STARSkate Skills, Tests, Achievement, and Recognition this program has been the mainstay of figure skating in Canada for more than four decades. How STARSkate works: The STARSkate program consists of figure skating skills in four areas: Skills, Dance, Freeskate and Interpretive. Juniors: Skaters who have just moved from CanSkate or Junior Development to StarSkate and who are generally working toward their Star 1 & 2 tests. Coaches recommend the skating level for each skater. Junior Star Skaters will be taught in an on-ice class format for most of the lesson time.

2 Figure Skating Program Information P a g e 2 On Wednesday and Saturday there is ½ hour for private lessons or self-directed skating. Juniors are not permitted to skate during Senior Ice time. Intermediate: This group is added this year. Previously we had 2 categories of just Junior and Senior, but recently the numbers of STAR Skaters have been increasing and we have added this third group. Coaches recommend to the skaters what group they should skate with. There is much more flexibility this year with schedule. Skaters can skate their usual times but also add on for the Junior Ice Time at a reduced rate if they chose. Seniors: Coaches recommend to the skaters what group they should skate with. There is much more flexibility this year with schedule. Skaters can skate their usual times but also add on for the Junior Ice Time at a reduced rate if they chose. Skating Skills The objective of this program is mastery of the basic fundamentals of skating edge quality, control, power and speed executed on a pattern and skated solo. Ice Dance This test program teaches timing, musicality, expression, rhythm, interpretation, structure as well as basic skating skills such as edges, flow, control and unison. Free Skating Consists of the execution of jumps, spins, footwork, field movements and stroking, either in isolation or performed in sequence to music. Interpretive Program The objective of this program is to encourage and develop skaters creativity, expression, musicality, movement, interpretation of music, as well as the use of space, rhythm, line and style. The program provides skaters with the opportunity to explore the performance aspect of skating without focusing on technical elements. Lessons: There are classes, private or semi-private lessons are given in Skills, Dance, Freeskate and Interpretive by a certified Skate Canada coach. For the classes a coach will run the program during that time and the coach cost is covered by the registration fees. Almosy all of the skating for the Junior STARskater is in the class format. For skating each skater enters into a private contract with a coach/coaches. Skaters pay the coaches individually for these private and or semi-private lessons. Each year, we update our list of coaches available to coach STARSkaters during our STARSkate sessions at Riverview Skating Club. This year we have full time coaches Jennifer Harvie, Talia Pay (after October 15 th ) Clara Moran and part-time coaching with Jessica Lake-Crossley. Tests: Whether the skater decides to be competitive or remain recreational, they may at some point take a test. Talk to your coach about tests and she will be able to advise if the skater is ready. You can also contact our Test Chair, Kristi Haliburton if you have questions. Competitions: Competitions are optional for STARSkaters. During the season you will see announcements for various competitions throughout the province. If you are interested, you should discuss this with your coach.

3 Figure Skating Program Information P a g e 3 Volunteering: Parents of STARSkaters are asked to contribute their time to events such as our fundraising events, annual ice-show and test-days. A skater s first point of contact for STARSkate is the skater s coach. Tanya Leopold (tleopold@ns.sympatico.ca) is the StarSkate Coordinator this season and she can assist with many of your questions concerning STAR club activities. Each family is required to participate in the Club fundraiser for the session(s) they are enrolled in. All skaters enrolled in the spring session will be invited to participate in our Annual Ice Show! The Show Theme this April 2017 will be Tangled. Program Assistants: Skaters registered in STARSkate/Competitive Skate and experienced Adult Skaters can volunteer to be Program Assistants during CanSkate and PreCanSkate. 8 Figure Skating Program Information P a g e 8 Ice Etiquette for STAR Skaters Skating is a competitive and individualized sport that requires safe and courteous behaviour from all participants, on and off the ice. Skaters need to be aware of one another, and react predictably to ensure their own and others safety. Each skater is responsible for being aware of and practicing the rules of etiquette and safety noted below. With the exception of a medical emergency, due to insurance requirements, only registered Skate Canada members are permitted on the ice. A parent or guardian shall remain at the rink at all times for skaters under the age of 12. Appropriate skating attire is required for all sessions (no jeans or street clothes, or loosefitting clothes). Hair must be pulled back from the face at all times. Hair elastics and/or athletic headbands are acceptable. Food, drink, and gum are not permitted on the ice; plastic water bottles are acceptable, but must be left at the boards. Glass bottles are prohibited. Spectators, including parents of skaters, may watch quietly from the stands or seating area not by the boards and must refrain from conversing with or offering directions to skaters on the ice. (If a skater needs more direction, the coach should be consulted after the session, and a plan developed to help the skater become more independent.) The gates in the rink boards must be kept closed while a session is in progress, to ensure the safety of skaters on the ice. Sitting on the boards is not permitted. Skaters should be on the ice on time and at all times during the session. If a skater needs to leave the ice they must seek permission from the coach. All efforts should be made to arrange for meals before or after ice time. Snacks during a scheduled break is reasonable. All breaks need to be scheduled and with knowledge of coach. Coaches are in charge at all times on the ice. Failure to follow any of these rules may lead to the skater being asked to leave the ice. Skaters must clear the ice promptly at the end of each session. On the ice Skaters must always look both ways when leaving the boards. Skaters are expected to be skating at all times while on the ice, and to get up promptly after a fall in order to keep pathways clear for other skaters. The ice surface should be used for practice, not for conversation. (Working in small groups with coach s approval is acceptable.) When practicing routines, skaters must learn to manoeuvre around other skaters and still do jumps, spins, and footwork successfully. The skater whose music is playing has the right of way. Calling out Excuse me! or Heads up! will alert other skaters to get out of the way. Skaters should use the centre of the ice, between the blue lines and away from the boards, for practicing spins. This allows room at the ends of the rink for preparations for jumps, and for other skaters to manoeuvre around the spinning skater. Foul language, yelling, and abusive or aggressive behaviour, including kicking holes in the ice, are prohibited, and will result in loss of privileges. This is true for the entire rink and all skating in any club activity in any location.

9 Figure Skating Program Information P a g e 9 Parent Code of Conduct Skate Canada is committed to ensuring that all skaters have the opportunity to participate in a safe and welcoming environment that is encouraging and promotes their overall development.
