3 Laxá í Aðaldal and Svartá í Bárðardal - FishIceland 2012 axa in Adaldal, which many simply call Big Laxa, is Lone of Iceland s largest salmon rivers, and it consistently produces the country s heaviest fish, meaning fish of greater than 10 kg/20 pounds. Originating at Lake Myvatn and fed by numerous springs, the river has the clarity and complex currents of a spring creek. However, this is a big, powerful river. Many visitors value the Laxa because conditions are reliable. Variances in water levels are minimal and the water tamperers are very consistent. Most of the pools on the Laxa can be fished by wading or from banks, though a few are fished from a boat using the classic drop-down method. The salmon has an average weight of 4.5 kg but no other river in Iceland provides so many salmon over 10 kg/20 pounds. There are fish in the river over 15 kg/30 pounds but bigger have been lost. It is a fly only and catch & release river. Accommodation is in a large and comfortable lodge at Laxamyri with 12 twin bedded rooms, each with suite facility. Large sitting room, sauna and a comfortable dining area where gourmet meals are served. You will have one guide for the two rods. This is a two rod package so you will be sharing a rod which normally work out great on this river and it cuts down te cost a lot. The Svarta river flows north from Svartarvatn lake through the Bardardalur valley in countless twists and turns before joining the glacial river Skjalfandafljot. The Svarta river boasts a high percentage of brown trout in the 3-6 pound category and several larger ones are hooked every year, often breaking leaders and bending hooks. This small to medium sized river is dry fly heaven with lots of variation of pools to challenge the anlger. There are both pools with slow and fast water and many places you will see this trout feed from the high banks. The Svartarkot farm offers comfortable self catering accommodation with a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, 2 bedrooms, wc and shower. You have the choice of using your own sleeping bags or made-up linen beds can be provided at an extra cost. The Svartarkot farm is nested on the shores of Svartarvatn lake and due to its elevation it provides a spectacular view of the surrounding vista of lava fields, dormant volcanoes and mountains, all the way to the Vatnajokull glacier in the south, the largest glacier in Europe. 6 Sog river - FishIceland 2012 FISHING FOR BARS OF SILVER, SALMON NFJdesign.com Home of many 20-pounders, the Sog River is recognized as one of the finest Atlantic salmon rivers in Iceland. Sog is the largest spring fed river in Iceland and is renowned for its amazing birdlife, beautiful surroundings and high percentage of multisea-winter salmon. Sog is all private water and has six salmon beats and a total of 13 rods. The salmon season is from early July to late September. The Bildfells beat is the most productive beat on the Sog with salmon annually in recent years and frequently produces the heaviest salmon in Sog each year meaning salmon of 20 pounds or bigger. Accommodation is provided in a comfortable self catering lodge beside the river. The lodge has a very well equipped kitchen for cooking, 3-4 bedrooms (sleeps 6-8), WC & shower, dining and sitting room. Also, the lodge has a seperate storage room for waders, fishing clothing and a icebox for storing the fish. The fishing is done with single or double-handed rods using floating lines with small to medium size flies. Most common flies are Red & Black Frances, Blue Charm, Red & Green But, Snaelda, Sunray Shadow and other tradition Icelandic flies. Fly fishing and spinning is allowed. Some years ago the Sog had a total catch of about salmon but has improved greatly since the fishing nets were bought out of the river Hvita which Sog runs into. Since then the catch numbers have increased with 700 salmon being caught in 2009 and a record breaking season in 2010 with more than 1300 salmon and the 2011 season closed with approximately 1000 salmon. Sog has a very good stock of Arctic char and every year char of size 8-9 pounds are caught. Sog is surrounded with photoscenic areas and the most popular tourist attractions in the south of Iceland such as the volcano Mt. Hekla, lovely lava fields, Glacier Langjokull, the famous Geysir, the waterfall Gullfoss and the National Park at Thingvellir. Laxá Laxa in Adaldal (also known as Big Laxa ) is one of Iceland s largest salmon rivers which produces some of the country s heaviest fish that is salmon greater than 10kg/20lbs. Originating at Lake Myvatn and fed by numerous springs, the river has the clarity and complex currents of a spring creek which has evolved into a big, powerful watercourse. The days on offer will be enjoyed on the famous Nes beat during peak prime time when few other rivers can boast such outstanding returns. There are eight sub beats (one rod on each) and anglers will rotate around each one during their stay. Laxa s salmon have an average weight of 4.5kg but no other river in Iceland provides so many specimens over 10kg/20lbs. There are fish in the river over 15kg/30lbs and larger fish have been lost on occasion. Laxa is fly only and there is a catch and release policy in place. Many visiting anglers value the Laxa because conditions are reliable; variances in water levels are minimal and the water temperatures are very consistent. Laxá Laxá The Fishing Double-handed rods around 13ft (#8) loaded with a floating line are popular. The salmon in Laxa will rise to your fly here but it is advisable to bring a fast sink poly leader. Preferred flies include Sunray Shadows and local patterns such as Laxá Blá, Frances, Dimmblá and Night Hawk, although various size 12 double hooks are also recommended. There can be weed in the water, therefore it is good to come equipped with some single hooks too. Laxá Full board accommodation is included in a large, comfortable lodge on the Nes beat with twin-bedded rooms and en suite facilities. 8 A challenging salmon river bursting with adventure Hafralonsá Hafralonsa is a stunning, highly sought after salmon river located in the northeast corner of Iceland. It extends to 28 kilometres of beautiful, fishable water. The river rises at its source amidst a rugged landscape and runs through several kilometres of trout and char fishing before cascading over a spectacular upper waterfall. The middle reaches may appear to run through comparatively flat land however this is deceptive as it actually careers through a deep canyon which is at times very steep-sided and dramatic. This is seriously wild and challenging fishing not for the faint-hearted. The trip will involve a lot of walking and bumping along a rocky path in a 4x4 but the rewards are great, not least because the most highly prized fish are big and there are only six rods fishing the entire river. The Fishing The pools on Hafralonsa almost invariably lend themselves to the fly. In most cases a plan of attack can be made on the high bank before being carried out at the water s edge, targeting the most likely fish within the crystal clear pools below. You will definitely be sight fishing on this river and get very close to the salmon before your fly has even touched the water. In 2009 catch and release was imposed except for one grilse per rod. Single-handed rods of 9ft 6ins to 10ft (#7) are most commonly used with floating lines. Smaller flies work well and you will also get plenty of chances to use a riffling hitch here. Hafralonsá Hafralonsá 104 cm The package includes three nights in the main selfcatering lodge overlooking the canyon and the lodge can accommodate up to 12 guests comfortably. Selá Selá SELA IN VOPNAFJORDUR Sela origin is in Selarbotn south of Botnfjallagardi in the east of Iceland and runs from there 55km to the ocean. The salmon can run 45km. This river is one of the most sought after rivers in the world but not many anglers get to try it since reserved for regular clients but otherwise the Selá is a INVITATION ONLY river. So it is a rare opportunity that we now offer this very unique package for the salmon anglers who only want the best. The last few years the river has been producing salmon a year. This only being caught on between 4 and 9 rods! Even in the cold summer of 2011, the Selá produced salmon so it is very stabile fishing. The Selá has only gotten better with the years and the number of big salmon has also increased. There is a good number of 10kg/20lb+ salmon. The Selá is one of the most beautiful rivers in Iceland. It offers a good variation of fishin.- Both fast water to calmer pools with sight fishing. Every rod has so much space and pools that it is impossible to fish it all. 11 HOFSÁ Another favorite... ofsá is also an outstanding river in its own right Hneighbouring the Selá. Everyone who fishes for salmon will have a favorite and those lucky enough to have fished the Selá or the Hofsá will almost certainly pick one of them above all others. Their affections may have grown from days of success, from days of great challenge or simply from days spent in particularly wonderful surroundings. This river is held in very high regard by many and remains a favorite destination of the salmon fishing elite, including HRH the Prince of Wales and other visiting dignitaries from around the world. As HRH the Prince of Wales recalls in the book A Celebration of Salmon Rivers, perhaps my most special memories are reserved for the Hofsa river in Iceland. It is without doubt one of Iceland s most prolific rivers, comprising seven beats and is perfect for a single- or double-handed rods. It combines a wide range of experiences found individually on other Icelandic rivers, which will test, thrill and, on occasion, torment the salmon angler. 14 Absolutely stunning river that has it all Midfjardara, known in Iceland as The Queen of the Rivers this stunning river with its gin-clear water has over 220 named pools. With only six to ten rods that rotate over five beats it is hard not to feel that you have this cracking river to yourself. The main river Miðdfjardará has three tributaries: Nupsá, Vesturá and Austurá which features the famous canyon section which, although a hike, is well worth it as it is a beautiful part of the river. One of the joys of the Midfjardara is the varitaion of the rivers, you will get it all here. Low land, canyons, fast water, slow deep water, you name it. You have so much space on every beat that you wont even be close to trying each pool. The Midfjardara is perfect for those who like to use single-handed or small double-handed rods with floating line and small flies or hitch-tubes. Many places you will be able to see the salmon from the high banks and make your hunting plan. The main run of the river is predominantly made up of grilse but in the early season the majority of fish tend to be multi-sea-winter fish in the 10 to 20+ pound range. There are some reel monsters in the river which are often seen and but many are lost on the light tackle. But each season, salmon of kgs are landed. Professional English speaking guides will take the anglers in a 4WD vehicle to the river every day for a new experience. The Hraun beat extends to almost 3km with numerous islands along the way which help create enticing currents and varied habitat for the trout, some of which reach 4kgs. It offers fantastic dry fly fishing for just three rods, although nymphs and streamers are just as effective. The water is accessible and straightforward to wade for the most part, making it easy to sneak up on the unsuspecting fish. 23 FISHING FOR Bars of silver, salmon - FishIceland 2012 FISHING FOR BARS OF SILVER, SALMON Nils Jörgensen - nj@ranga.dk Home of many 20-pounders, the Sog River is recognized as one of the finest Atlantic salmon rivers in Iceland. Sog is the largest spring fed river in Iceland and is renowned for its amazing birdlife, beautiful surroundings and high percentage of multisea-winter salmon. Sog is all private water and has six salmon beats and a total of 13 rods. The salmon season is from early July to late September. The Bildfells beat is the most productive beat on the Sog with salmon annually in recent years and frequently produces the heaviest salmon in Sog each year meaning salmon of 20 pounds or bigger. Accommodation is provided in a comfortable self catering lodge beside the river. The lodge has a very well equipped kitchen for cooking, 3-4 bedrooms (sleeps 6-8), WC & shower, dining and sitting room. Also, the lodge has a seperate storage room for waders, fishing clothing and a icebox for storing the fish. The fishing is done with single or double-handed rods using floating lines with small to medium size flies. Most common flies are Red & Black Frances, Blue Charm, Red & Green But, Snaelda, Sunray Shadow and other tradition Icelandic flies. Fly fishing and spinning is allowed. Some years ago the Sog had a total catch of about salmon but has improved greatly since the fishing nets were bought out of the river Hvita which Sog runs into. Since then the catch numbers have increased with 700 salmon being caught in 2009 and a record breaking season in 2010 with more than 1300 salmon and the 2011 season closed with approximately 1000 salmon. Sog has a very good stock of Arctic char and every year char of size 8-9 pounds are caught. Sog is surrounded with photoscenic areas and the most popular tourist attractions in the south of Iceland such as the volcano Mt. Hekla, lovely lava fields, Glacier Langjokull, the famous Geysir, the waterfall Gullfoss and the National Park at Thingvellir.
