1 1 FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK Dear Parents, Festival greetings! Success in life is not about luck, it is about managed thoughts, focused attention and deliberate actions. I am very happy to see this edition of, which reflects the success story of our school, be it the students or teachers. I am happy to see the growing list of students who are being felicitated every year for their various achievements. I take this opportunity to appreciate the efforts of the students and parents for consistently performing well. I take this opportunity to thank and congratulate the teachers who have been associated with the school for more than ten years now. You have given true meaning to success, as you have gone beyond the common definitions of success, such as being wealthy, having a lot of tangibles and earned degrees. Quite the opposite: your success is not measured with the above-named factors, but instead the number of people who are able to live a better and more advanced life that you have created. Thank you teachers once again for making this world a better place for everyone. I thank the Middle wing Coordinator Ms. Tanya Jayakrishnan and her team for bringing out this edition of. The fine art of writing Writing Genres A genre may be described as a style or category of art, music or literature. It is a label that characterizes elements a reader can expect in a work of literature. To put it simply, it is a broad category marked by similarities in style or subject matter. The major categories of literature are fiction and Non- fiction, out of which fiction seems to be more popular. Some common genres of fiction include drama, fairy tales, folk tales, folk lore, horror, humor, mythology, short stories and science fiction etc. The genre that has remained an all time favorite among all age groups of readers is the thriller/mystery with many wannabe authors aspiring to master this particular art. Here are some tips to come up with a bestselling thriller- Some Directions to get started: 01 Choose a time period for your story. It could be pre-historic or may be the dystopian world. 02 Create a protagonist. Think about all the qualities he/she should have. Is he all good? Oh that s so boring. Bring in some shades of grey to his character. Let him fight the inner as well as outer demons. Bring out the flaws too, that make him a human 03 Complex Characterization- Do the same with the rest of your cast. Create an antagonist too who is not all black. Make him justified in what he does. Develop the personality of each character- basics- Male or Female? Name? Age? Physical Attributes? How do they get involved in the story? Their life? Their tastes? And so on and so forth. 04 Think of a plot and a mystery- Use your old friends- Who? What? Where? Why? How? When? Using the skeleton of the plot, sketch a summary with as many details as you can think of. Don t worry about putting them in order. Just jot them down somewhere so that you don t forget them later. 05 Experience the emotion. How can you do that? Concentrate on recalling an emotional moment in your life, and re create each sense in your memory (sight, smell, touch, sound etc). Now transfer this to the page. 06 Begin Writing. Start building on your basic premise and the ideas jotted down and weave your plot around it. Initially introduce the characters and the setting and then thicken the plot or maybe start with the most thrilling experience itself. Be sure to give the reader as vivid a 22

23 23 07 description as you can without overdoing it. Bring in dialogues, suspense and twists and turns. Bring in a twist. There s nothing better in a thriller than a stunning twist to keep the reader hooked. Pause after a scene and ask yourself- What would a reader expect to happen next? Create a list of possible ideas and discard them right away. Do something totally unexpected, like- Heart Attack Accident The siren of a police car A mourning shadow 08 At the end reveal the mystery. Remember to clear all the mystery without leaving a shadow of doubt. There is nothing worse than leaving the reader confused. 09 Figures of speech. The beginning and the end of your story must be very catchy to sustain the interest of the reader and to keep him gripped till the very end. Use dramatic words, metaphors, personification to make it more interesting. 10 Check the Story. Make it a point to write, check, re check and then check the story again. You have to be certain that it makes sense. 11 Icing on the cake. Come up with an attractive and cool title for your story. Make sure that the title should get your reader interested. All the best and happy writing. Hoping to see your name in print soon!!
