SPIE Student Chapter Report 2012 Hannover Optics Student Chapter, ID chapter officers President: Marko Heidrich, Vice-President: Nadine Tinne, Secretary: Sabine Donner, Treasurer: Claudia Unger, List of current members: SPIE # Marko Heidrich Nadine Tinne Claudia Unger Sabine Donner Tobias Ehmke Oliver Suttmann Jan Düsing Markus Schomaker Anja Hansen Raoul-Amadeus Lorbeer Dag Heinemann Ben Matthias Jan Hahn Georgios Antonopoulos Eike Lübking Thomas Willemsen Tobias Birr
Chapter s activities during the last year SPIE Leadership Workshop in San Diego Chapter member Anja Hansen attended the SPIE Leadership Workshop in San Diego. Furthermore, she presented her work at the Optics&Photonics conference and won the Best Student Paper Award. Anja (right) represented our chapter at the student chapter exhibition (left). Recipients of the Best Student Paper Awards and conference chair: left to right Andrew Forbes, Thomas Godin, Anja Hansen, Todd Lizotte. Visiting the Berlin Optik Student Chapter In September 2011 we visited the Berlin Optik Student Chapter. It was very interesting to visit everybody in their lab at the science and technology park Berlin Adlershof and the Max-Born institute. The Berlin student chapter also organized a guided tour at the synchrotron radiation source BESSY II for us. It was great to get an insight to the various experiments in the beam line like fast demagnetization of Ni films for instance. During lunch break and after work beer we had the chance to catch up with the Berlin Optik Student Chapter members and to exchange experiences about the chapter work. Our tour guide, Dr. Christian Stamm (5th person from the right) and Berlin Chapter president Rico Henze (right) together with the Hannover Optics Student Chapter in the lobby of BESSY II.
On our tour at the controll room of BESSY II. Coming together with Berlin students for after work beer at Berlin Adlershof. Social Event at Hannover Christmas Market As everybody enjoyed the visit at the Christmas market very much last year, we established it as joyful tradition. Group of Hannover Optics Studen chapter at the christmas market. Hot wine kept us warm! Cheers to SPIE! Pheano In March, the SPIE chapter went on a trip to Wolfsburg to visit phæno - Germany s unique Science Center. Phæno is interesting for everyone who likes: touching, trying things out, finding astonishment, playing, exploring, discovering, and above all: unraveling the frequently mysterious natural-scientific phenomena of everyday life on one s own initiative. Our group s favorite attraction was a house which was shifted in an angle of 30 degrees. Inside the house, it was designed in such a way, that you could not see the angle until you entered and were pushed down by gravity. Probably the world s largest rolling ball sculpture (left). Fighting against gravity in a common house.
Hannover observatory The student chapter visited the local observatory and heard an interesting talk about the history of aviation. Unfortunately the cloudy night denied observations. But observatory staff and students equally enjoyed discussions about the optical equipment in the telescope and our solar system. Feedback meeting and outlook on future activities In June 2012 the chapter met for a feedback conversation to reflect activities and organization of the chapter in its first two years. As a consequence of the overall positive feedback from all chapter members we want to stick with our concept to organize two or three major trips per year and more frequently smaller meetings. Those will be taken into a casual environment (e.g. bier gardens in summer time) and open for student who are no chapter members (yet). Place and time of the meetings will be announced on our chapter homepage. The goal is a frequent exchange about optics topics, to get students interested in our work and to have fun developing new ideas about future research projects as well as chapter activities. During the next year we also plan to visit the Olympus GmbH company in Hamburg (scheduled September 2012) and carry out a summer barbecue (2012).
Financial Status The settlements of some activities which are already named in the last report appear in this financial report. The refund of the payment of the chapter t-shirts and the summer barbeque were delayed due to the officer election in August, the long lasting authorization change for the chapter account and the receipt of the 2011 activity grant in beginning of September. Funds raised and expended Date of money Activity description/ grant amount transfer Beginning Balance Activity grant Chapter shirts Chapter Promotion BBQ Fuel costs to visit Zeiss Göttingen Additional Activity grant to visit Berlin Chapter Fuel costs to visit Berlin Chapter Promotion event Christmas market Activity grant Visit of Phaeno science museum Wolfsburg Visit of Hanover astronomical observatory General online banking costs End balance
Each trip has an icon of one to three walking figures to designate how active a trip will be. The activity levels are described below.
