1 DENALI PEAK NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2019 DENALI PEAK HAS A MASCOT! The votes are in and the new Denali PEAK mascot is...drumroll please...the WOLVERINES! DENALI PEAK NEEDS YOUR ARTISTIC ABILITY! Denali PEAK would like to thank each parent and student that took the time to vote on the choice of school mascot! We are now The Wolverines! As you can see below, our wolverine has already left his mark on our logo, and we need YOUR help to nd him! He is so new to Denali PEAK that we don t even know what he looks like! Submit your drawings, computer graphics, or other art media designs of what you think our wolverine looks like, so we can track him down and get him safely back to our school. You have until January 10th, 2019 to submit your designs, at which time the staff of Denali PEAK will decide the ve nalists. Then the vote goes back to you!

2 The top contenders will receive gift cards to Barnes and Noble or Learning Essentials. You can submit the designs in person, at either of the Denali PEAK O ces, or via to denalipeak@dbsd.org INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT WOLVERINES Here is some information about wolverines to help you on your designing journey! Wolverines are the largest member of the weasel family! An adult wolverine is between pounds. That's quite a weight range! Wolverines need a lot of room to roam. They can walk up to 15 miles a day while searching for food. Wolverines are fast creatures! They can run at speeds close to 30 miles per hour while chasing prey. Baby wolverines are called "kits". Wolverines have an excellent source of smell. They can smell some food sources located up to 20 feet buried under snow! Wow, what a sniffer!

7 EAGLE RIVER NATURE CENTER - NATURE STUDIES FOR HOMESCHOOLERS WHEN WEDNESDAY, JAN. 16TH, 1PM WHERE EAGLE RIVER ROAD ANCHORAGE, AK MORE INFORMATION Practice survival skills such as preventing hypothermia, building a snow shelter, and making a re. Take a look at the various adaptations that Alaskan animals use to survive winters. Weather permitting, we'll get on snowshoes and look for tracks. This individual homeschool class for K-6th costs $15. No refunds unless class cancelled due to low enrollment or bad weather/roads. Children need to be accompanied by a responsible adult (no drop-off). Dress for going outside (snowshoes provided). 11 ANCHORAGE MUSEUM - SCIENTIST SPOTLIGHT: AIVIQ AND NANUQ WHEN THURSDAY, JAN. 31ST, 5:30PM WHERE 625 C STREET ANCHORAGE, AK MORE INFORMATION the rst of three scienti c explorations of the iconic mammals highlighted in the exhibition Aiviq & Nanuq: Sea Horse and Sea Bear of the Arctic Ice. Tonight s event features Jenell Larson, a PhD student with the University of Alaska Fairbanks, whose research focuses on the reproductive ecology of walruses. Examine artistic accounts of sea ice, polar bears and walruses in the exhibition to inspire conversations about their current status and future outlook in a rapidly changing climate. Return for the Feb. 28 program, which examines polar bears and features USGS wildlife biologist and polar bear ecology and population dynamics researcher Todd Atwood, PhD. $10, free for members.
