The Intermediate and Advanced pilots will complete their fifth and sixth rounds and final scores will be tabulated. Winners are not immediately announced, however, as they would be at a local contest because there are still more flights to be flown. Masters and FAI will fly their final two rounds today, but for these two classes these rounds are semi-final rounds and not their final rounds. They will have to wait for another day to complete their part of this contest and then the results will be announced. Roughly half of the Masters and FAI pilots have not met the cutoff so they will not be flying and by the end of the day there will only be eight Masters and eight FAI pilots remaining. They will each fly four flights on Saturday to complete the contest. The eight finalists in Masters are George Asteris, Jerry Budd, Jeff Carder, Mark Hunt, Steve Miller, Arch Stafford, Lance VanNostrand, and Glen Watson. Before any finalists can be considered in any class they must first have their airplanes weighed and measured. The maximum weights and measurements are 5 kilograms and 2 meters. Most airplanes fit into these limits easily, but occasionally there is someone who has to scrape an ounce here or there. Happily for each of these pilots weights and measurements were not a problem. 2 Melissa Hester did a terrific job entering scores at Site 4. Bobby Stout said, She does a great job. Between her and Bill Cutlip, the line chief, they make my job easy. Andrew Jesky, Dave Lockhart, Sean McMutry, Jason Shulman, Quique Somenzini, Don Szczur, and BrettWickizer. These eight pilots had to fly the first two days with one sequence and switch to an entirely new sequence today for their rounds five and six. They will fly this sequence twice tomorrow along with two Unknown sequences they will pick later on Friday evening at Nats Headquarters. More than 110 pilots flew here at the Nats this year. Each is a champion in my mind. Not everyone will get hardware to take home, but everyone is a champion for simply flying in this venue. We have seen the best pilots in the United States and in some cases, possibly the best pilots in the world. I had the pleasure to be the NSRCA ambassador of good will for a gentleman from Oregon on Thursday. This man was so dazzled by what he saw that he was going back home and immediately start practicing. I had another opportunity to speak with a friend from my hometown who came with a friend of his who was helping his son fly in Masters. This friend was also interested in going home and trying his hand at Precision Aerobatics. I am camping on the beautiful grounds of our AMA Headquarters here in Muncie. I am sleeping in a tent so my office for the NatsNews is usually under an Easy Up. Because of the rain there have been times when it was in my tent, but usually it is under the stars. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes that it is impossible to appreciate unless you do it firsthand. There was a huge party going on in our parking lot tonight. One of our neighbors, Jeff Carder from District 6, was having a steak cookout for everyone from the district. Several made the finals in Masters, but they are not out to get each other. They are laughing and joking because they are all friends. 5 air above them. It was great to see such good fun among the competitors. My second special experience of the evening was at Nats Headquarters. The eight finalists in FAI had to select maneuvers for two Unknown sequences to be flown the next day. Here again there was fun and enjoyment among the participants. Several times I heard someone say to someone else that his choice of a maneuver was good, or they would joke about maneuvers they flew in other places such as the TOC. Lastly, since my office is outside, I get a great view of all three flightlines. At 11 p.m. as I am writing this article, I don t anticipate seeing much flying going on. My mistake, as I glanced over to Site 3. What do I see but a stream of lights dancing across the sky? Further investigation turned up our NSRCA president, Derek Koopowicz, and several of his West Coast friends flying very small electric-powered airplanes with lights! Funny, what you see here at AMA Headquarters. Jim Quinn One of the great Advanced pilots, Chuck Hochhalter, is another Texan flying a Texas design: the Pentathlon. Eric Newsholme is another great pilot from Site 4 flying a beautiful Symphony. Check out the two Unknowns the two Unknown sequences that the FAI pilots will be flying Saturday. Wow!
