2 NEWS NOTES From a newspaper squib: LONDON - Red Admirals from the Mediterranean are avoiding Britain this year, but lots of Painted Ladies are visiting from the same area, Lepidopterists reported. In Supplement No.2 to1:. Lepid. Soc., pp , Enosis matheri Freeman is described: The allotype female is a specimen taken by Bryant Mather at Tuxpango, Veracruz,,Mexico, in 1957, while at meeting of the American Society for Testing and Materials. This year that organization presented Mather with a butterflied plastic pillow in recognition of his "important contribution to the history" of the Cement Committee of that society by collecting a new species. This from Charles R. Edwards, Curator'of the Charleston Museum, and Dr. Richard B. Dominick, Research Associate: "Any Society members passing through our lovely South Carolina lowlands who would like to see a general synoptic collection of coastal S. C. macrolepidoptera, some of which are species rare in collections, are invited to stop in at the Charleston Museum at the corner of Rutledge and Calhoun streets in the beautiful old section of town. Work on the collection of micros is in progress. Mrs. Julian Harrison, Miss Millicent Elmore, or Mr. AI Sanders will be glad to show you what we have in this, the oldest city museum in the country (founded in 1773). For those who may pass through Greenwood, S. C., "The Museum", newly organized under the directorship of Mr. J. W. Durst, offers a similar but much smaller synoptic collection of our lowland macros." Michael C. Dickens of the Butterfly Farm, Bilsington, Ashford, Kent, England, is to be tour leader of an escorted entomological tour of northern India, Nepal, and the Malay Penninsula from May 28 to June 16, Collectors interested in participating in this rare opportunity may write for further information to M. K. Kendall Ltd., 18/19 Eldon St., London E. C. 2, ENGLAND, or to Mr. Dickens. The main objective of the trip will be to collect rare Lepidoptera. Cost is quoted at $1, U.S.; point of departure will be London. According to the new Membership list, and the additions of new members published in this issue, the Lepidopterists' Society now numbers 1,026 (not including institutions). Don't forget to bring a new member into the Society this year!! -CVC Word has been received of the recent death of Dr. Rudolf Mell of Germany, a specialist in the Lepidoptera of East Asian frontiers. -2-
3 FIELD SEASON SUMMARY Following are deadlines for submission of reports of the 1970 season and policies designed to prevent redundant reporting and make editorial duties more efficient: 1. Deadlines for submission of copy (NO EXCEPTIONS): January 15, 1971 Submission of individual reports to Regional Editors March 10, 1971 Submission of regional reports to the Associate Editor 2. Editorial Policies: A. Individual Contributors: 1. Careful preparation of reports should include nomenclature following the Dos Passos Check List for butterflies, and the Me Dunnough (1918) Check List for moths UNLESS recent revisionary work has modified or added to our knowledge. Do not abbreviate generic names. 2. Avoid reporting information already in print; avoid unsubstantiated interpretations or impressions. 3. Acceptable material includes the following: a. New state records or range extensions of adults. Rare species and stragglers may be reported if from new localities. New county records as such are not wanted unless they extend known ranges. (Consult recent state lists and other publications). All individual reports will be filed with the Society's Librarian, Dr. Peter Bellinger. b. Changes ID abundance. Include only comparative figures of individuals per unit effort or time period for 1970 as contrasted with some previous time period. Avoid speculative statements such as "Euchloe olyjilpia did not fly in Iowa this year," or "Widespread use of insecticides has resulted in the disappearance of Papilio glaucus." Results of mark-recapture studies and reports on endangered species or habitats of rare species colonies are especially solicited. c. Migrations and other movements. Report direction of movement, and number of individuals passing front of a known distance per unit of time (or some equivalent quantification). d. Biological information. Welcome items include host plant, behavior, predation and parasitism, myrmecophily, or other ecological and life history information not on permanent record. Be sure to include dates and localities. e. Moths. There has been a tendency to omit all but the largest and most familiar species from the Summary. It is my opinion that their relative exclusion has been one of the failings of the Summary. In future years, as fascicles of The Moths of America North of Mexico appear, a broader base will be provided upon which identifications can be made and new information added. -3-
4 f. Subspecies. Please use subspecific names only when they have been substantiated by current specialists in the groups involved. g. Documentation. It is desirable that new distributional records be supported by the deposition of material in large institutional collections so that the records may verified and included in future revisionary or faunistic treatments. 4. Unsuitable, poorly edited, and illegible reports cannot be accepted by the Regional Editors for inclusion in the Summary. B. Regional Editors are to accept only material conforming to the above guidelines. They are not expected to sift significant data from lengthy reports. Regional reports must be neatly and concisely prepared if they are to be accepted for publication in the Summary. -Paul A. Opler, Associate Editor Contributions of WYOMING records for 1970: Please send your reports directly to Dr. Clifford D. Ferris, P. O. Box 3351, University Station, Laramie, WYO., USA, He has arranged to take data for his nearly-completed Wyoming check list, and will compile a state report to submit to Regional Editor Don Eff. 5 LITERATURE (continued) THE MOTHS OF AMERICA NORTH OF MEXICO. Publication date is nearing for Fascicle 21 (Sphingoidea) of this "work of the century." I was privileged to see the proofs of the plates when they reached two of the editors in Washington, and was impressed by the high quality of reproduction and the fact that more than one color pattern will be represented in variant species. If you have not received a brochure including the format, text and plate sample, and ordering information, request it from one of the following: Entomological Reprint Specialists, Box 77971, Dockweiler Sta., Los Angeles, Cal , USA E. The borrowed copy will be returned promptly in good shape. Potential loaners please write S. S. Nicolay, 1500 Wakefield Drive, Virginia Beach, VA., USA, SPECIAL NOTICE: All members are urged to pay their dues for 1971 as soon after receiving statements as possible. To put dues notices aside is to forget them. A great deal of time and money were devoted last year to mailing out Second Notices. No mailing of reminders will be done this year. Members who have not paid thier dues by March 1, 1971, will be automatically dropped from the mailing list. SPONSORS NEEDED. The Lepidopterists' Society now has a number of friends living in areas outside the USA who are unable to pay their dues because laws of their nations prohibit payment of U.S. dollars. If you can and wish to provide a membership for a lepidopterist overseas, please contact either the Secretary or the Treasurer. The cause is, indeed, a worthy one! S. S.
