To find out more about all our events visit our competitions diary at Andrew Scott s guide to fishing from a boat on ielder Water with Northumbrian Water Angling for everyone Seven tips for boat fishing ielder Water 1. Ask The first and most important thing to do before fishing any water the size of ielder is to ask the fishery staff for advice on arrival. The ranger team at ielder are experienced and very helpful and will be more than willing to tell you which areas and methods have been fishing well. 5. Fish for the brown trout ielder offers some exceptional wild brown trout fishing and although many are caught by anglers fishing for rainbows, some subtle fly changes can produce some excellent sport with these native fish. Use something with a little flash in the dressing on the point, a Dunkeld sparkler or Butcher are my first choice point flies. On the droppers I use traditional wet flies such as the Bibio and ate claren. Brown trout can be found almost anywhere around the shoreline but notable hotspots are - the Belling, Whickhope, atthews Lynn, and ironically Stockie bay!. Start with a sinking line Unless conditions are perfect and fish can be seen rising, I always start with a medium sinking line such as a Di-3, this way you are far less likely to miss a shoal of fish as you will catch at the start and end of the retrieve. If the trout are high in the water you will also catch the deeper fish at 4 5 feet down as the flies arc mid retrieve. The deeper fish will almost always be missed if using a floating or intermediate line. 6. Watch the bank anglers Bank anglers can be an excellent indication that an area is fishing well and as most of them keep their fish in bags at the water s edge, it s usually quite easy to see if they have been catching. Try a drift either side of them but remember to show them plenty of respect and do not go closer than 100 metres. 3. Target the upwind banks in summer With most of the feed in ielder being terrestrial insects the first opportunity the fish have to take them is when they are blown onto the water on the upwind banks. The water is usually calmer here too making it more pleasant to fish. Try to start your drift close to the bank and end it about metres out as ielder fish will not often hold over the deeper water. 7. Use a wake fly in a good wave In windy conditions it can often pay to use a buoyant fly on the top dropper to attract fish, many patterns are suitable for this from traditional uddler style dressings to the more modern Orange Blob and Tequila Blob Boobies which at times can be lethal. 4. Slicks and flat calms These are the exception to the norm as fish will often move away from their usual shoreline feeding areas to feed on items trapped in the surface film or concentrated in the slicks. Always keep an eye out for wind lanes and watch for rising fish in calm conditions. Tight lines Andrew Wheely oar-some fishing Loyalty card A purpose built, accessible fishing boat set sail on its maiden voyage at ielder Water. First passenger, Alistair orps-bell, was delighted to have international football legend and keen angler, Jack harlton, onboard. From now on, disabled anglers at northern Europe s largest man-made lake can hire the oulam 16 Wheelyboat, which has been specially designed for big stillwater fisheries. The boat s wide open deck can easily accommodate two wheelchair users and a companion. Boarding is via a ramp from bank or pontoon onto a hydraulic platform that lowers the angler to deck level. 6 Newsletter Don s opening comments 3 The leader guide Hardy & Greys 4 Fishing for Everyone with Lucy Bowden 5 Snippets and news 6 Fishing from a boat at ielder Go fishing August 011

Junior members of Hirst Park Trout Ticklers and Fishing for Everyone joined together for a friendly competition at Fontburn Reservior on Saturday 5 June 011. On bait in the morning there were some good catches. Heaviest bag went to Jamie Taylor from HPTT weighing in at 4lb 8oz with two rainbows. Annie Smith from Fishing for Everyone caught the heaviest fish weighing lb 1oz. Other catches on the day included Alexander Scheutz s blue trout weighing lb and Lewis Robertson s 9oz brown trout (safely returned). The day ended with presentations and prizes kindly donated by Fontburn Reservoir and Angler s United. Hand tied leaders are a cost effective way of constructing a leader using spools of line (copolymer or fluorocarbon) in a variety of breaking strains. Although this style of leader will not emulate the presentation offered by a knotless tapered leader there is more flexibility to customise length, and it's cheaper. ou can also incorporate droppers to fish teams of flies. Spend time practising knots to ensure swift bank side maintenance, and it is worthwhile tying a few leaders up at home. opolymer offers excellent strength, a low diameter and is very supple; it is also cheaper than fluorocarbon. opolymer sinks relatively slowly and in many cases will need treatment with a degreasing agent to help it sink. These qualities make it an ideal choice for dry fly fishing or suspending buzzers in the surface film. Fluorocarbon has become incredibly popular as it reflects very little light and also requires no treatment with degreasing agents. It sinks rapidly and is an ideal choice for deep fishing with buzzers or running a team of bugs through a river. Fluorocarbon is also stiffer than copolymer, fairly abrasion resistant and less prone to tangles. Poly leaders/tips are available in a variety of sink rates, a poly leader is really a sink tip and a very effective method of controlling depth. Ensure that poly leaders are connected to a full length knotless tapered or hand tied leader in your preferred material. And finally, some leader tips! 1 When tying knots make each turn carefully, prior to moistening and then pulling tight as rushing that all important final connection usually ends in disaster! Dropping down to a low diameter, lightweight leader may produce more takes and hook ups, but if this results in a broken leader left trailing behind the fish, is it really worth it? 3 Store leaders on spools and in leader wallets away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. 4 Never mix copolymer with fluorocarbon leader materials as this can result in breakages. 5 Always check the rules at your venue some state minimum breaking strains for leader. As well as running my own business and standing as chairman of the fishing club, I also work full time for world renowned fishing tackle manufacturer, Hardy & Greys. I ve been with the company for almost four years and love the variety of the job. One of the questions many people ask when they find out I m an angler is what got me into it and why is it such a big part of my life. y response is always the same; y Dad got me into the sport and for that I am eternally grateful. Angling to me, like many of us, is so much more than a hobby. y passion, my career and the people I know, all revolve around angling. I have attended enterprise days in schools and workshops and have given a number of motivational talks. I am often asked if I think I am a success or where I see myself in five years time. I usually reply by asking what determines success? Is it making money, having a big house and a flash car, or is it achieving what you ve always wanted, finding happiness and feeling self assured and confident with the person you are? For me, it s certainly the latter. Although things didn t happen overnight, I have worked hard to establish myself as a dedicated and proactive role model for ladies in the sport. Fishing for Everyone was created in 005 from the adolescent idea that I wanted to encourage more people, particularly more women, into the sport of angling. Fishing, and the friends I have made along the way, have made me who I am today. Who knows where I ll be in five years time. I just hope I am still happy, healthy and successful. Bring on the fishing! The club proved such a success that by its second year, we were able to apply for official angling club status and we put a committee in place, along with club rules and a constitution. The club now holds regular events each month covering all angling disciplines from fly fishing to predator, sea and coarse fishing. The club is open to women, and junior anglers under the age of 17. I stand as chairman and I m incredibly proud of what has been created. What breaking strain should I use? This is very much a personal choice but the general rule is to base it on the size of fish you're targeting lb 3lb for river fishing with small dry flies and nymphs, through to 15lb 0lb for salmon fishing in high water conditions. When purchasing tapered leaders, bear in mind that the stated breaking strain will refer to the thinnest section of leader. Please remember to carry your loyalty card with you when you visit our waters. Each time your card is swiped, your visit is recorded and will count towards a day of free fishing. ome fishing seven times and your eighth visit is free.
