1 POSITIVE INCIDENCE NO:33 16th Jan 2016 A monthly Newsletter to club members of the Strathalbyn Model Aircraft Club From Paul Mitchell : President I thought that a new year should herald in a new look to the Newsletter.so here goes with some fancy picture headings n stuff...hope you like it...i spoil you guys!! I was really chuffed to see so many guys at the field last Sunday. I counted 26 models at one stage and didn t count the ones still in the cars! I ve recently had several web site enquiries for membership forms so our numbers are still growing. Even with the number of guys out at the field last Sunday, there was never a hold-up on the flight line. Another thing that delighted me last Sunday was the way the flight-line behaved itself explanation: The wind was all over the place and several times take-offs and landing were made in diametrically opposite directions which required the aircraft in the air to all change direction at the same time.and this all went off without any fuss because the flight-line pilots made the call clearly to each other, and when the signal was given we all just reversed our flight direction and went from a right-hand circuit to a left-hand circuit.no fuss, no bother and everything back to the way it needed to be for a safe landing. This is something that could be made a regular exercise to keep people on their toes for just such occasions in future. I noticed that some of us had to make an occasional down-wind landing (in very light winds so no real danger), and again these were all done safely. And while we are giving out bouquets.trevor Smith and Matt Flaherty both test-flew new models last Sunday. Both took off from the Astroturf like they were on rails and landed down the green stuff again as smooth as you will ever see well done guys. 2 Bob Smart helps Trevor Smith with his very slippery looking Cosmic Wind Little Tony Next General Meeting 26 th Jan is on the that s Australia Day, but the consensus was that we should not change the date. Nick Braithwaite is bringing along a DVD of last year s Battle of Britain Air Show from Duxford. It s a professional video with full surround sound, capturing the excitement of the event and finishing with a display flight of 17 Spitfires catch him someone I ll keep the meeting part of the evening short, so we can give the film our full attention it goes for around 40 minutes. I have spoken to the manager of the Great Eastern Hotel and he has agreed to let us use the downstairs (wine cellar) conference room that has comfortable chairs and a full entertainment system which means we can probably turn up the volume a bit (lot) and really hear the rumble of those glorious Merlins ahh. Heaven. We ll have our meal and the general meeting upstairs in the room we normally use then get drinks in and wander downstairs for the viewing.don t miss it see you there. 2

3 Club Member Photos Peter Smith has taken up gardening.seen here adding tyre surrounds to errrrr.. a plant of some sort..you can tell the non-gardeners can t you..! Peter tells me this will assist the growy thing to hold water and flourish. In all seriousness though.well done Peter and thanks for the input it all helps keep the place looking good I can feel a working bee coming up..! Good to see Stocky back out at the field again although the way he was leaning against the railing could mean he needs a little longer to recuperate.looks like Keith is giving someone a hand with control inputs through an imaginary buddy box transmitter.but then I would know all about body language.. wouldn t I? Sean is seen here making prospective new member Wilfried welcome at the field. Wilfried is from Victor Harbour and his main interest is control-line flying although I did assure him that radio flying is completely and utterly addictive and he shouldn t be at all surprised if he has a transmitter in his hands in no time at all now there s a challenge Hey Brian we ll get that combat session going yet eh? 3

5 Astro Hog Sean Flaherty Sean chose an old favourite of mine from days gone by for his next build.a trial run before he get going on some larger and more complicated projects that he has stored away. When I was in my teens I spent many a Sunday morning hand-launching Hogs for members of the Canberra MAC when such models were powered by cantankerous glow motors of around 5 to 7cc and guided by multi-reed radio gear Left: Should be able to see which way up it is with that colour scheme. Below : bear bones show neat structure. 5

6 Gamecock Paul Mitchell The fuselage is almost finished... tail-plane and elevators next, then the wings. The wings will be removable with functioning rigging as per full size, however I m intending to keep the model fully rigged most of the time, so that means making a trailer to cart the thing around in! 6

7 D.H. Mosquito Nick Braithwaite Nick has started on the replacement Mosquito with work underway on the outer wing panel which this time will be detachable to aid transport and field assembly. The manufacturer has left the transfers off the model, so Nick is thinking of making this one as Group Captain Cheshire s Mosquito, which he flew with 617 Dambusters Squadron, complete with black and white invasion stripes which will definitely help in telling which way up the model is flying..! 7

11 T28 Matt Flaherty low pass with toes tucked up and looking terrific Matt checks out the motor prior to it s first flight It is always great to see new models out at the field - Matt s immaculate T28 is a real beauty. Right: a peek inside. which is almost as good as the outside eh! 11

12 COSMIC WIND Trevor Smith The unmistakable profile of the classic Cosmic Wind as she flashes past the pylon on her way to another victory on the race circuit..a winner in every sense. Trevor Smith s Little Tony captured as she floats in for her maiden landing long and flat a classic race-bred design Looking great from any angle. 12
