The Bendigo Radio Controlled Aircraft Club s Central Victorian Newsletter A L O F T Vol. 8. Issue 3 REMINDER Next Meeting is on Monday 26 th March 2018 at the Kangaroo Flat Y.M.C.A. at 7:30pm. REPORTS ROUND UP. MARCH TRAINING DAY. We will be having training on Friday 23 rd of March at 10am. If possible please attend this life saving training at the Marong Airfield. TASK A THERAL GLIDER EVENT. SUNDAY MARCH 4 TH, Unfortunately we had to cancel this event. Hopefully this event will be a huge success next time we run it. CLUB BUSINESS PRESIDENT S REPORT MARCH It has been a dry, windy and hot month again and not great for flying. Let s hope we have change soon. We will have our Night Lights flying this Saturday night with some great fun for all members to have a fly, or just enjoy the lights. This was a great night last year and should be better this year so come and enjoy the night. When the weather improves we will look at having a working bee to tidy up the pit area and try and bring the runways up to a better condition. Hopefully we can get this done before our events in May. Safe Flying President. Andrew Thomas. (AUS 5567). 1
SECRETARY S REPORT Dear Members, Not a lot to report this month, as you may be aware the lifesaving training is on this Friday 23 rd and we require as many members to do the training as possible. It starts at 10 am and goes for about 1 ½ hours. I ve done the training for work and it may be very useful as we never know when emergencies occur. See you all at the next meeting. 3 Little Bit of Goss. From the flight line to the grapevine. Ringmaster Fly-A-Thon will be October 6 th and 7 th. Were you interested in this little challenge that we entered last year and did very well in. It was all just for a bit of fun, well it s on again this year. Would you like to be a part of it? It was a lot of fun and it also helps to promote our club all around the world through the exposure on the world wide Facebook site. If you can fly control line and not everybody can (that's for sure) and would like to have ago at this fun event the plans are free and materials cheap (most of it comes out of the scrap box), so there very little cost involved. Last year we had two aircraft but only one managed, to do the scoring but I know that will not the case this year. Brian Deason and I will able to help you if you would like to try. We can lend sets of control lines if that's all that's stopping you from coming and having some fun. And I did see the two young lads having a ball with the control liner on the Large Scale Racing weekend last year. In America they love their Ringmasters as you can see by this group photo above. Note the different variations from 049 (0.8cc) size up to 46 (7.0cc) and you can even see one there with twin engines. It seems as long as the wing and tail is the correct shape the rest is up to your imagination, and they still call it a Ringmaster. Report by Les Davis. Do you want to buy a Spitfire? Here s one for sale if anybody's interested. You can own your own Spitfire and have the largest aircraft at the field. Supermarine Spitfire Mk26 80% scale for the sale price of only a mere $ with 300 hrs total time airframe and engine, 180hp 8 cyl, fuel injected, [Air cooled engine...] Vhf, Gps, in excellent condition, Reg RA-AUS This aircraft would use up all our runway on landing, but wouldn't it look good to see a low pass over our field. Are there any takers? 3
How many different types of Aircraft Wings are there? Lots. Here is just a few of the wing platforms used in everyday aircraft. There are plenty more when you think of it, for example biplanes. Some have both wings parallel, some have one straight and the other swept back, others have both wings swept back but at different swept angles. You Have to Be Joking Be careful what you wish for, it may come true! This could be a problem 4
The Fastest Plane in the World* The De Havilland Mosquito enjoyed a short reign as the world s fastest plane for just a little over two years before other aircraft outpaced it. The Wooden Wonder helped win the World War II and changed the world of aviation. What was the Marvellous Engineering Trick That Made the Mosquito the Fastest Plane in the World? The De Havilland Mosquito was a medium sized bomber used by the Royal Air Force during WWII. What set the Mosquito apart from other bombers was its remarkable speed, hitting upwards of 360 miles per hour (580kph). This fast bomber did so well in battle and achieved incredible speed from its wooden airframe. As WWII pressed on, "metal" became scarce in Great Britain but the RAF still had a great need for more planes. They turned to aircraft engineer Geoffrey De Havilland to design a bomber that could get the job done. He designed it out of wood and utilized the many out of work carpenters to craft the airframes for De Havilland Mosquito. Check out how many women are there. To help you they're the ones without a neck tie. Because furniture factories, cabinetmakers, luxury-auto coachbuilders and piano makers could quickly be turned into subcontractors. Because wood, particularly when covered with a thin layer of doped fabric, makes a remarkably smooth, drag-cheating surface free of rivets and seams. And battle damage could be repaired relatively easily in the field" 5
Aside from its wooden airframe, there were several other innovative features that were integrated into the Mosquito. This light bomber lacked guns, which helped to increase speed as well as focusing completely on bombing attacks. Bombers such as the B-17 Flying Fortress were slower due to the excessive weight of gun turrets and crew to operate them. Since then many other bombers followed suit taking away guns, everything from the RAF Canberra up to the B-2 Spirit. Saturday Night Flying. 24 th March. The last time we had a night fly it was a heap of fun. We had Gary doing high speed passes just above the runway. He was so low his lights were lighting up the grass on the runway. Also Les was being sneaky turning off his lights during flight, no-one could see where he was until he turned them back on again. I hope Damien brings out his big plane that he has. I must say I love the way he designed the light pattern all over his aircraft. Photo from last year s night fly. If the weather is good I am sure it will be another great night of fun and flying. I hope to see you there. It that s time again. What a funny month we have had. Lots of windy days, some very hot days, and then some days that seem cold as we have finally gotten used to the heat. Unfortunately we have not had any wet days, as the airfield is looking very dry still. If you do happen to find a good day to go flying, remember to have fun and have a smooth President: Andy Thomas Vice-president: Graeme Beagley Secretary: Garry Schmedje Treasurer: Garry Schmedje Website: Editor: Noel Frost noel.frost@esc.net.au 6
