The Bendigo Radio Controlled Aircraft Club s Central Victorian Newsletter A L O F T Vol. 8. Issue 7 REMINDER Next Meeting is on Monday 30 h July 2018 at the Kangaroo Flat Y.M.C.A. at 7:30pm. REPORTS ROUND UP. JULY SPOT LANDING COMPETITION. 1 ST JULY. After a week of cold miserable weather Sunday turned out to be quite mild but certainly not that warmish, but it was quite suitable for our Spot Landing glider competition. 5 pilots indicated their intention and paid to enter but only 4 made it onto the scoreboard, with Ken Battersby who volunteered to do the scoring for the competition which was a great help. The tasks were to achieve a set flight time before an attempt could be made at the landing circle. The further away from the landing circle your aircraft landed the less points you would get. The light coolish air didn't make it easy to achieve the required flight times and most struggled except for Alan Uren who made all the flight times and so had more chances than all the rest at the landing circles, and it paid dividends for him. Brian Deason was coming in rather fast on one of his landing approaches touched down almost in the centre of the circle and the glider slide right across the circles and finished out side of the scoring area, all that effort then missed out. John Newman and Les Davis both had a touch of misadventures but survived the ordeal with only minor damage and both can still fly on for another day. All in all it was a very enjoyable day. Results First Place Alan Uren 45 Landing Points Les Davis 5 Landing Points Equal Second Place Brian Deason 5 Landing Points John Newman 5 Landing Points A big thankyou goes to Ken Battersby for his assistance. Report by Les Davis. WORLD WIDE POSTAL TOMBOY COMPETITION. This year s postal Tom Boy Competition ( ) conducted out of Italy by SAM 2001 has been run and won and here s the results, and Bendigo is in the money again. This time our member Brian 1
Deason did very well recording a first (1st) placing in the Tomboy Senior (48" class), and a second (2nd) place in the standard size Tomboy (36" class). Unfortunately our other member failed to make it into the placing s this year. The Club's two members who take part in this world wide postal Tomboy competition have been involved since 2011, that's seven years ago. In those seven years Bendigo has only missed out on one occasion of not being in the placing s, and that was because of the weather conditions that year had not been anywhere near suitable at all for flying these little light weight electric aircraft. That is a great achievement from our club members and it also puts Bendigo on the world map as one of the competitive and skilled clubs here in Australia, so well done "Bendigo". Both Tomboy Seniors, wingspan of 48 inches fly wonderful in the right weather conditions. Both of these aircraft have been winners, but in different years. Report by Les Davis. TEXACO OLD TIMER COMPETITION. 15 TH JULY With the forecast wind speeds, the conditions were very marginal for the models, but with 6 fliers ready to go it was all on for a change. We decided to fly rounds of 3 aircraft at a time, so that everyone had a helper to deal with the unexpected wind gusts and also time the flights. Fuel is allocated at 3cc per nearest pound in weight of the model and with the cold nip in the air we had some "starting cold engine" problems which used a considerable amount of fuel and a take-off with dodgy engine reliability is not what we wanted. This was soon solved by some getting started and warming up the engine before shutting down - draining the tank and a quick refuel with the proper allocation of fuel, and a restart with a warm engine. All flying was basically conducted upwind due to the marginal conditions, but it was nice to see the eagles were finding lift, so we had some idea at the start that there was some around to be had. Round 1 had all fliers finish with two achieving the 10 minute maximum time and one with just 5 seconds under. Round 2 had Alan retire with engine problems. Two fliers with a maximum scores and two over 8 minutes. Six Old-timer s. Was that planes or pilots? 2
Round 3 had Larry also retire. Two with a maximum score and two over 8 minutes again. Round 4 had two with maximum scores and two over 8 minutes again. To separate the two fliers both having 4 max scores out of 4, we had a fly-off between these two purely to see who can achieve the longest flight to separate them into 1st and 2nd places. Great flying from both and once again both in excess of the 10 minute previous flights with 12min 11 sec and a 14 min 5 sec result deciding the final placements. My thanks also to our three helpers on the day, Roy, Margaret and Sam, assisting with time keeping etc. These helpers made it a very pleasant day for all. Results Robbie Marshall 3 rd. They would have started out at club level competitions, then moved on to state competitions followed by Australian Nationals and now have a world title for their efforts. We may live down under but our Aussie Pilots can still come out on top of the world. Aussie Team are Number One! 3
CLUB BUSINESS PRESIDENT S REPORT JULY It was good to see Club Old Timer Texaco have a good day for flying and entrants getting to fly. Thanks to Alan Uran for running the competition on the day and the members that helped with the running of the event. It is time again with another finical year over and the AGM is our next meeting. I would like to thank Gary for all the work that he has put into the club over the last 12 months as Secretary and Treasurer of our club. 6 Little Bit of Goss. From the flight line to the grapevine. More Moans on Drones. Now I know why we drink out of bottles, the empties are weapons against intrusive drones that fly over your/our homes. I've had them fly over my home have you? Our regulations require us to fly our aircraft out in the open away from all Buildings, Houses, Car parks, Power lines, Airports and Highways for very good safety reasons, yet here we have drones flying over our houses at 50 to 100 feet above us, looking at what we don't know, where does privacy laws come in to play with all this? Those Bloody drones again. Missile launched at a drone, hope he a good shooter and on target, or is the bottle he threw going to land on his own head? Quiz Time Quiz Time Quiz Time. Question 1 How many engines does a Boeing 747 jet airliner have? Question 2 Question 3 What was the only allied Jet fighter to see operational service in WW2? Which character said "All you need to fly, are lovely things and fairy dust"? Answers can be found on the last page if you can't work them out or don't know. Hitec Radios Discontinued. Another brand of radio finished, Hitec have stopped production some months ago on their transmitters, it appears that the sales of their TX's had fallen off and so they decided to cut production. If you have a Hitec radio and you want to keep it going for a long time it s suggested that you may purchase several receivers in order to keep your transmitter running for many years to come. When checking with the importer of Hitec products, I was told that the rest of the Hitec lines are still in production including all their servos as well as their full range of Multiplex radios and accessory lines with all their transmitters. (In case you didn't know Hitec own Multiplex) I have also noticed that Sawna radios appeared to have gone off the market was well, the Australian agent now has only 2 car radios left on their order list. What is going next? Who knows? 6
Not Seen Before. Has anybody seen this control line kit before, it s made by Pilot, who are the OK model company of Japan. I am not aware that pilot made any control line kits, maybe they did but were never brought to Australia. Can anybody give us information on these type kits? I do know all about their large range of radio models that they produced, like Planes, Gliders, and Boats, but never seen a control liner kit. Wing Man. When you hear the pilot say I'll be your wingman on this next mission I didn't know what he meant, until I saw these pictures. Now I know he is really a wingman for sure. I have not seen this B-29 picture before, but I have seen pictures of a Russian bomber with fighters attached to the wingtips. In fact Mr Ken Thomas (founding member of this club) actually built the Russian version and flew it but when the fighters were released it didn't go to well, a touch to heavy and fell away very quickly unfortunately. A true Wingman right to the very word. Need a Laugh! No 1. Next time on your drive to Sydney or maybe Canberra check this sign as you come to the town of Yass. Someone didn't think this through to well, Hey! Need a Laugh! No 2. This Soldering job that took many hours to do. It took nearly 3 days to get the solder to stick, but it worked until the crash happened. 7
Large Scale Racing. Our friendly Large Scale Racing in on in just a few weeks. The entries are coming in, at this time of writing this note there are 22 entries and we still have 3 weeks to go before race day. David Munday has confirmed he will be here from Tasmania to work as one of the Light Marshalls, I'm still yet to contact Damian Reidy, Gary Schmedje, Noel Frost and Vic Cresp as the suggestive helpers for the other light marshalls, and Graeme Beagley has informed me he will be free to be the race starter this year, so thankyou to all my support team. It makes running these days so much easier with their help. Racing will start at 10am Saturday and 9am Sunday, weather permitting. Let s hope the weather is good although it s always cold this time of year. Well it is known as the winter races, that's why we have hot pies sausage rolls and hot dim-sims on sale in the canteen. Andrew will have the hot food and drinks all covered, that's for sure. Saturday 18th and Sunday the 19th at the Marong International Flying Field, Wimmera Highway (B240) Marong. Yo-Yo Flying is on Again. The World Wide Ringmaster Fly-a-Thon (Control Line) is on again this year on the 6 th -7 th of October. Has anybody had the time or inclination to build a Ringmaster, to help us obtain a greater result than last year? Ringmaster Fly-A-Thon 2018 Last year s result if you can't remember was 101 Flights over the two given days, there was to be 3 Ringmasters to participate but only one managed to score the flights, the second had engine problems and the third was still on the building board. (Free plans are available and it can be any size from 049 up to 10cc, just scale up to suit) 5 laps is all that's needed to be classed as a flight, and to try and get as many flights as possible, with as many pilots and as many Ringmaster aircraft as possible can be used, it s the total number of Ringmaster flights that their after, each year they have set a new record of number of flights, last years it was 4366 flights from 742 pilots from all round the world. The Brotherhood of the Ring is sponsoring its 11th Annual Fly-A-Thon event: Worldwide Event on the October 6th & 7th,
Time for a Change? The next meeting of our club is the Annual General Meeting, (Monday the 30 th of July). This is where the Executives membership is elected for the next two years. Are you happy with the way the club has been run and conducted over the past year or so? Do you think the club needs to move in a new or different direction? If so then it s up to you as a club member to step up, and take over one of the executive roles. Are you interested is keeping the website up to date, or do you want to do the newsletter? Would you like the title of President, Secretary or Treasurer beside you name? Why? Well because you may think the club needs more social days or even less social days. Maybe more or less competition days, more or less open competition days, maybe more fundraisers, or membership drives, working bees, or cheaper electricity bills, (whoops, wrong elections). Does the club need to present itself better to the general public or do we need more publicity like stories/reports in the newspapers or on the radio, more community events involvement or maybe even a Facebook page. If you have a suggestion on any of these items then it might be time to for you to step up, not me, not him, but you. Please think long and hard about it, your club needs YOU! Quiz Time Answers. Question 1 Answer How many engines does a Boeing 747 jet airliner have? Four engines Question 2 Answer Question 3 Answer What was the only allied Jet fighter to see operational service in WW2? Gloster Meteor aircraft. Which character said "All you need to fly, are lovely things and fairy dust"? Walt Disney's "Peter Pan" It that s time again. The large scale racing is on next month and some entrants will do anything to get that extra advantage in the racing. Some of the contestants might only carry enough fuel for the race to reduce weight and increase speed and manoeuvrability. But if they go too low on fuel they might be in for an early President: Andy Thomas Vice-president: Graeme Beagley Secretary: Garry Schmedje Treasurer: Garry Schmedje Website: Editor: Noel Frost noel.frost@esc.net.au 9
