Originating from New York, after arriving in Texas, Clarke fell in love with the creeks and rivers of the Texas Hill Country and, it didn t take him long to strike up a close relationship with Hill Country Guide Kevin Hutchison and, as the opportunity presented, Clarke was up there fishing with him. In memory of our friend, Saturday, May 19, 2018, the Texas FlyFishers will host the 4 th Annual Clarke Thornton Memorial San Marcos River Trip with Guide Kevin Hutchison. If you have ever thought about floating the San Marcos River this is the trip you should sign up for. The flow is always great due to it being a spring fed river and the level has never been better. Kevin, who has guided on this river for many years, is hosting the trip and coordinating the logistics. He is planning on floating the section between Spencer Canoe / Shady Grove Campground down to the town of Staples. This is a long run but with the flow being what it is he thinks it will be perfect. - Continued May Monthly Meeting The May monthly meeting of the Texas FlyFishers will take place on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at the Bayland Community Center, 6400 Bissonnet, Houston, Texas The scheduled speakers for this month s meeting are Ron Mayfield and Ellie Roeing. 2 4 th Annual Clarke Thornton Memorial Continued Plans are to meet at Spencer Canoe at 8:00 am and run our shuttle by 8:30. Kevin will arrange the shuttle. There will be a $5.00 per car parking fee for each vehicle, payable to Kevin. Based on getting started at 8:30-9:00 am we should be off the water around 5:00 pm. Each person signing up for this trip will receive a brand spanking new leader, a dozen San Marcos flies (in a new fly box) and a special commemorative t-shirt, printed special for this event courtesy of Kevin & company and of course perhaps the best shore lunch you have ever experienced. The fee for this unforgettable trip will be $20.00 per person. This fee must be paid or committed to in advance and is non-refundable after May 1st, this is also the cutoff date for reserving your commemorative t-shirt. A camping spot has been secured at Spencer Canoe/Shady Grove Campground for those of you who wish to drive down Friday night and miss the early morning drive. You may also camp Saturday night after the float if you wish, just let them know you will be doing so. They are also your kayak rental source in the event you are in need of one. Now this is important! Camping and/or kayak rentals MUST be made in advance with Spencer's (there is no deviations to this)! You must personally call them at (512) for your camping and rental needs, these fees need to be settled by you! Everyone entering the property must check in at the office upon arrival. Just tell them that you are with the Texas FlyFishers and that you will be floating the river with Kevin Hutchison or myself. So, how do you sign up for this trip? Easy, with me! 3 A Special Note of Thanks! The first Saturday in May is synonymous with two major sporting events. One, is the run for the roses, better known as The Kentucky Derby and, despite the rainy weather and sloppy track at Churchill Downs, the race took place and everyone saw a great race. The second and, IMHO, a more important event, was held about 1000 miles to the west and, early in the morning, it seemed like it was going to experience the sort of weather, wet and sloppy. But, as the old saying goes, God looks after little kids and fly fishers and, around 10:00 am, the skies at the Bayou Sports Bar began to clear and, the Texas FlyFishers Annual Auction was off and running. The Auction is our club s major fund raiser for the year. Since the Texas FlyFishers Club is a non-profit organization for education, the proceeds generated allow the Club s Education Department to offer a wide array of classes to our membership, as well as any non-member that might be interested in learning the fine art of fly tying, as well as our all-inclusive Fly Fishing Academy. They also help support other events such as the Annual Dr. Ed Rizzolo Fly Tying Festival, our Annual Summer Mini Expo, Trout in the Classroom and, a couple of youth based, conservation organizations like the Texas Brigade. And, since the Texas FlyFishers is an all-volunteer organization, 100% of the net funds raised are used to support these events. I want to send out a big Thank You to the large number of outside supporters who graciously donated their time and top shelf products to our auction. These items account for about three-fourths of the money the auction raises and, without their generosity, it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for the Club to offer up a wide array of fly fishing opportunities. Most importantly, we all need to give a special thank you to our auction co-chairs, Mary Kay and Skip Donovan. Their effort extends way past auction day and, as soon as one auction is in the books and they have a chance for a quick breather, they start up their tireless efforts on the next year s auction. Along with Mary Kay and Skip, we would be remiss in not recognizing a few other key individuals that made this event happen and run smoothly. Thank you Tracy Quigley and Lauren Gustartis, who did a masterful job of handling the ticket sales and drawings, Raymond Lindeen, our club Treasurer, for collecting the money, Ron Mayfield and Jeff Ferguson for taking on the casting instruction duties, Cory Rich, your auctioneer, Rudy Ackerman and Bill Leary for throwing in and helping out with the social media and IT duties, Phil Shook for publicity, Mike Graham and John Purcell for ramrodding the set up and take down. Last, but certainly not least, Phil Swift, the owner of Bayou Sports Bar, along with Judy and Stephanie, the Bayou Sports Bar staff and the crawfish cookers. The beverages were icy cold and the bugs were steaming hot. Be sure to mark down May 4, 2019 on your calendars, the date for next year s event and, before you know it, auction time will be here again. 4 Here s What s Coming Up! Monthly Meeting: Tuesday, May 29, 2018: This month, the Texas FlyFishers will have two speakers for the May monthly meeting. TFF Member Ron Mayfield and, Elaina 'Ellie' Roeing, PT, DPT. Ron will take us up north in pursuit of one of the rarest fish in North America, the Montana Grayling. Ron s presentation will educated us about grayling subspecies, where to find them, conservation efforts to save the Montana grayling and, fly fishing for Montana grayling. Elaina 'Ellie' Roeing, PT, DPT, will educate us all on the physiology of fly casting, proper casting techniques to avoid injuries and, exercises to strengthen your muscles and joints to avoid injuries. We recommend you try to attend this month s meeting for some valuable information from one of the Club s top casters and, one of the area s top sports rehabilitation professionals. A little background on the speakers for the Texas FlyFishers May monthly meeting: Ron Mayfield Ron has been fly fishing and fly tying since he was 13 years old - for 46 years. He has fly fished from British Colombia to Belize and many places in between. He specializes in salt water flats fishing along the Texas Gulf Coast and has designed many unique patterns for this area. He has been featured in Fly Tyer Magazine and On The Fly Magazine and is a Fly Designer for Umpqua. Ron is also a Certified Fly Casting Instructor and leads the Southside Fly Casting group where TFF members can meet for fly casting instructions. Ron's presentation will be on where and how to catch one of the rarest fish in North America, the Montana Arctic Grayling. Elaina 'Ellie' Roeing, PT, DPT Ellie holds a Doctor of Physical Therapy from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine where she graduated in Her undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Science, Field Of Study Health Sciences Pre-Professional from Purdue University where she graduated with a GPA 3.98/4.0. While at Purdue, she was the Team Captain of the Swimming and Diving Team. She is currently a Physical Therapist with the Memorial Hermann Health System at the Pearland branch office. She also volunteers twice a week at Athlete Training and Health to help improve the transition for our athletes between Physical Therapy and Strength and Conditioning. Ellie will be showing the club the correct way to strengthen arm and shoulder muscles to avoid fly casting injuries. 4

5 Here s What s Coming Up! - Continued Also, in keeping with the night s theme, proper casting technique, beginning at 6:00 pm, Andy Payne, along with some of the Club s other casting instructors, will be on hand to help you out with your casting stroke until the meeting begins. Andy requests that you bring your rod along. So, if you are interested in learning more about the fly fishing world and you are just interested in socializing with a friendly group of fly fishing men and women come to the May 29th monthly meeting. We would be glad to have you and look forward to seeing you at the meeting. There is no charge for admission and, visitors are as always welcome. Aside from two big outings, Fence Lake (SW) and the South Llano River (FW) trips, June 30 th is when your annual membership expires. The Texas FlyFishers offer three different yearly membership categories, an Individual Membership at $24.00, a Family Membership for $32.00 and, a Student Membership for $ To renew your membership, you can pay in person at the monthly meeting, by sending a check via snail mail or, electronically via pay pal. 6 June, A Busy Month - Continued Another order of business for the FlyFishers at the June Monthly Meeting is the annual Election of Officers. As outlined in the club charter, the Texas FlyFishers are required to elect four officers, President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, to steer the club for the next year. If you are interested in running for one of these positions or, would like to nominate a candidate (with his or her permission), contact one of the club officers and make your submission. A list of officers is located on the last page of Winknots. And, keep in mind that if you plan on voting in the elections, your membership dues needs to be current. I hope you will make plans to attend the June Monthly Meeting and, thank you for supporting your club. 8 Conservation: Trout in the Classroom Fish Release The 2018 Trout in the Classroom Project kicked off in January when I collected roughly 1300 trout eggs from Trout Unlimited and delivered them to this year s schools. Thanks to the donations from Texas FlyFishers, we are now up to 13 Houston area science classrooms running the trout tanks. The classes hatched and raised the trout until they reach 2-3in long and then, it was time to release them into the wild, the Guadalupe River in the Texas Hill County. Westbury HS Lauren Gustartis The trout in the classroom project conducted the fish release for all the TFF sponsored tanks on the horseshoe section of the Guadalupe on April 28th. Over all the schools released over 1200 trout around the 2-3in long mark. We had several teachers, students and parents in attendance. This marks the end of another successful program and one that has grown from one tank in one school to now 14 tanks spread across Houston from Deer Park to Klein Collins. 9 Conservation: - Continued Outings: As stated earlier in this issue, June is a busy month for the FlyFishers and now, we get to the part we all like best, fishing. Two of our most popular outings happen in June, Fence Lake, June 9 th, and the South Llano River, June 22 nd thru 24 th, trips. Saltwater Outing; The Fence Lake Outing is scheduled for Saturday, June 9, 2018 and the plan is to out on the M/V Skimmer, out of Fulton / Rockport, Texas, and then, about 6:00 am, cut across Aransas Bay to St. Joe s Island for a day of skinny water kayak & wade fishing. We will fish until 3:00 pm, when the Skimmer will return to pick us up at the mouth of Fence Lake and take us back to the dock. 9

10 Outings Continued: Fence Lake is a relatively small and shallow bay (averaging about 1½-3 ft.). This combined with the grassy bottom keeps the water clear and should allow you the opportunity to sight cast to fish. The numerous fingers and creeks should provide ample opportunity to explore the area and enjoy a peaceful day of fishing. The fish should be set in their spring patterns, big trout will be up shallow along with the red fish feeding on glass minnows and small shrimp. Be sure and keep your eye in the prop scars. Recommended equipment is a 6-8 WT outfit with weight forward, floating line, tapered leader with a lb. test tippet. Note: Don t forget extra leader material and tippet. Recommended flies are shrimp patterns, Bead Eye Clouser Minnows and light colored grizzly Seaducers are the productive flies. Spoon flies, crab and kwan style patterns also work well. Size 6 to 2. For surface flies, choose a pattern that will land softly, such as the Gartside Gurgler, a Dink or VIP popper. Note: There is a lot of grass in Fence Lake, both under and on top of the water. You might want to add a weed guard to your flies. You can always snip it off. The cost for the ferry service aboard the M/V Skimmer is $30.00 per person, payable the morning of the outing. The Skimmer can comfortably carry 12 fishermen and their kayaks. Note: The rate based on a minimum of 10 people. If you need to rent a kayak, they are available through the Skimmer at $50.00 per day. You will need to reserve it in advance. Also, tips for the crew are appreciated but, not included in the ferry fee. A confirmation will be sent out the week prior to the outing. Freshwater Outing: The South Llano River Float Trip is a multi-day outing scheduled for June 22 nd thru 24 th, 2018 at Junction, Texas. Everyone should plan to meet up on Friday afternoon around 4:00 pm. Keep in mind that driving time from Houston to Junction is about 5 hours, all depending on your point of departure and, how many pit stops you make. Day 1 is schedule for traveling, with everyone meeting up at the South Llano River RV Park, around 4:00 pm. We ll kayak this area getting our casting skills honed, and practicing with various flies. Hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill for dinner at our camp. Day 2 s float plan has a couple of options, depending on the condition of the river, with everyone fishing all day and meeting back up at the campground for fishing stories and, pizza.. : Sunday has the group fishing closer to the camp ground so we can maximize our water time before we all have to head back to the city, sometime around noon. 10

11 Outings Continued: Fly selection includes Yellow spider, size 6-12, Miss Prissy, or similar small popper, PGPP, size 8-12, S1B, size 6-10, Hare-E, size 10, Squirrelly, size 12, Dark Wooly bugger size I m sure the list will grow when a few folks read this and make their own recommendations. Cabins A, B, C, D, and E are reserved for Texas FlyFishers for this adventure. Outside you ll find a BBQ grill and picnic table. Linens and cooking utensils are not provided. Final cost for lodging will be split between participants, expected to be less than $50/person. Check with the outing leader for availability, additional details and, cost. Outings Report: From Trout in Colorado Joe Nicklo and Nicholas Lestrer A trip to Colorado April 17 thru 21st for Nicholas Lestrer and Joe Nicklo produced three, wonderful, fantastic days complete with sun shine, clouds, rain-n-snow, wind and FISH, beautiful rainbow trout fish! 12 To Yellowtail in New Zealand Matt Blyth Back in February I spent a week in New Zealand and split my time between both salt and freshwater. Whilst everyone is familiar with the trout in NZ, not many people know that there is also a fantastic shallow water flats fishery there. We were in a place called Golden Bay, which sits at the top end of the South Island. Each summer as the water warms, huge stingrays cruise the flats (think car hood sized, not the little Texas ones). Following the sting rays come yellow tailed kingfish looking to eat whatever the rays stir up. Normally a deep water species, kingfish are a member of the jack family and fight just like the rest of them. All fishing is on foot and in water from knee to chest deep. The sting rays can be seen from far away as they are jet black and then it s just a question of running through the water to get close enough to cast at one to see if there are kings following. They will hit streamers and top water and fight like demons! The weather was a mixed bag and really affected the trout fishing will post the trout pics when I get them. Enjoy! Billy Trimble s Blind Chicken Tie by Chris Sumers Hook: TMC 811S Size 6-2 Thread: Danville Flymaster - Chartreuse Head: Hot Cone, 3/16 / 4.8mm Fluorescent Chartreuse Body: Estaz - White Under Wing: Deer Body Hair - White Middle Wing: Bucktail - White Flash: Mirage Flash-A-Bou - Chartreuse Over Wing: Bucktail - Chartreuse Step 1: Mash down barb. Slide cone head over and run it up to the hook eye 13

14 Fly of the Month - Continued: Step 2: Tie in thread behind the cone head and wrap back to a point just behind hook point, about ¾ way to the bend. Step 3: Tie in Estaz and palmer forward just short of the cone head, leaving enough space for the next step, about 5-6 turns. Tie off and cut Estaz. Step 4: Cut a #2 pencil sized clump of Deer Belly Hair. Clean out under fluff. Put hair in a stacker and even up tips. With Hook Point up, tie in Deer Belly Hair where the tips extend just past the bend of the hook. Holding the deer hair in place, take two loose wraps then, pull thread down tight to flair the hair. Take several more tight wraps through the deer hair, helping spin it around the hook shank. Trim off the excess butts. 14

15 Fly of the Month - Continued: Step 5: Cut a piece of bucktail, about half the size of a #2 Pencil, clean out the under fluff and trim the butts evenly. Lay it on top of the deer body hair, where the tips extend past the tips of the bucktail. Tie the bucktail in with one loose wrap, then pull it tight to flair the tips and secure the bucktail. Step 6: Cut 3-4 strands of Mirage Flash-A-Bou, fold them over the thread and tie in on top of the bucktail. 15

16 Fly of the Month - Continued: Step 7: Cut a piece of bucktail, in contrasting or a similar color, the same size as in Step 5. Clean out the under fluff and trim the butts evenly. Lay it on top of the deer body hair, where the tips extend past the tips of the bucktail. Tie the bucktail in with one loose wrap, then pull it tight to flair the tips and secure the bucktail. Step 8: Take several wraps in the flared bucktail, pushing up on the cone head. Whip finish and, cut the thread. Apply a little head cement to seal the threads and cone head. Tight loops and tight lines! 16
