a warm welcome to 2012 smt anglers! We thank you for joining us this year as we celebrate the 10th anniversary the Our Salmon Master s Tournament, the largest cash jackpot salmon tournament in North America. It s hard to believe that it s already been a decade since out first event in 2003, but there s no doubt that the fantastic fishing, tough competition, great camaraderie, and worthy causes we re all helped support have made for some unforgettable memories... and some equally unforgettable fish tales! Have a great time during the competition and enjoy the spectacular scenery wherever you are fishing and the best of luck to all competitors! The Lodge at Whale Channel welcomes those seeking the opportunity to hook into trophy Kitimat River Chinook to win it all! The early run of Kitimat Springs are legendary for their size and fighting prowess. These fish are True Spring Salmon meaning that they enter their native river during the Spring providing action and excitement for Whale Channel s ardent anglers! Due to the often very large size of Spring salmon I do suggest that one regularly checks their leader, main line and all knots in preparation for a trophy salmon. As many of you know they often bite when you least expect it! I am looking forward to seeing many familiar faces and welcoming some new guests to the tournament as well. This year s gathering promises to be an amazing event and I am very excited to see you all up here soon. Good luck! paul dowler whale channel lodge manager 01

The Lodge at Englefield Bay is looking forward to welcoming all anglers to the 2012 Salmon Masters Tournament. After an amazing performance last year, I am optimistic about the outcome of this year s tournament. I anticipate our usual go to hot spots at Denham Bay and Cape Henry will produce as they have every year. Areas such as No Name, Willie Island and various points between have potential to produce large Chinook as well. The favorite spot will no doubt be Cape Henry which produced last year s tournament winner and is a consistent fishing area. Check your bait often, keep your tip up and let it run! jay jones englefield bay lodge manager The Lodge at Hippa Island welcomes all our new and returning Salmon Masters to this year s tournament. We had a lot of big fish hit the dock last year and we expect the same this year. The usual spots like Lighthouse and Shipwreck produced nice ones but don t forget the inside passage (especially during the flood). The mouth of Nesto Inlet is notorious for big, random tyees. Fishing deep around some of the offshore structure can pay off very nicely as well (pun intended). mike lawson hippa island lodge manager 02

OUR 9TH ANNUAL SALMON MASTERS TOURNAMENT WAS ONE WE LL NEVER FORGET! LOOKING BACK AT SMT 2011 As we are nearing the start of the 10th Anniversary of the Salmon Masters Tournament, the excitement is building and everyone is looking forward to another memorable event. The past few years have been incredibly action-packed and we have no doubt that 2012 will be no exception! Last year s 2011 event began as usual with a great pre tournament dinner at the Delta where everyone socialized, feasted on a great BBQ, shared some tales (undoubtedly mostly of the fish variety) and participated in fundraising for our benefit charities, The Pacific Salmon Foundation and the Make-A- Wish Foundation. A highlight of the eventing was the $50,000 donation by Barry Stewart to the PSF in the name of the Jesse Jones Memorial Fund in memory of the late, long time WCR guide and friend at Englefield Bay, Jesse Jones. What a fantastic way to kick things off! The best fishing of the tournament was experienced by those at Hippa Island who saw a close race with a lot of big fish competing within the Lodge. The ultimate winner at Hippa was Stu Hay who edged out Gil Stark s 44.8 lb chinook with a beautiful lb hog. In other years, this could have been the Grand Prize winner. However, Steve Fanscy, while fishing at Englefield, had something to 07

say about that! Steve landed an incredible fish that topped the tournament with a lb behemoth! Unfortunately, Steve did this on the first day which turned the tournament into pretty much a competition within each individual lodge for the daily and overall prize money. Steve certainly wasn t complaining though... especially considering his catch netted him a total of $115,000 in tournament prize money and an additional $6000 earned from participating in the popular Satallite Calcuttas. Whale Channel, after a stellar performance in 2010, experienced some tougher fishing than usual in 2011 but the competition was still high and some great fish were caught and lots of prize money handed out. The big winner there was Gerard Hermary with a lb slab that narrowly edged out Geoff Godden with his pounder. Calcuttas at all the lodges generated an additional $68,250 that was up for grabs over and above the $360,000 prize pool, contributing almost $7000 to recipient charities. 128 contestants 9 Calcutta jackpots, 9 Lodge Overall Prizes, 54 Daily Prizes and of course, the GRAND PRIZE all made for some seriously thick wallets and enourmous smiles. 11 salmon masters official rules 1 Prize money will be awarded for chinook salmon only. The Tournament will take 2 place simultaneously at three West Coast Resorts Lodge locations: Whale Channel, Englefield Bay, Hippa Island. The Tournament trip will 3 take place from June Days of tournament fishing will be June Two anglers will be assigned to every participating boat in the tournament. Anglers will not be allowed 5 to change boat partners during tournament fishing hours. Original boat pairings will remain intact throughout the entire tournament. Daily prize winners will be 6 announced at each lodge during the evening of each tournament day. Daily prizes awarded at 7 both Whale Channel and Englefield Bay are as follows: 1 st Place - $10,000, 2 nd Place - $7,000, 3 rd Place - $3,000, 4 th Place - $2,000, 5 th Place - $1,000, 6 th Place - $700 Daily prizes at Hippa Island are as follows: 1 st 8 Place - $8,000, 2 nd Place - $5,000, 3 rd Place - $2,300, 4 th Place - $1,500, 5 th Place - $800, 6 th Place - $500 In the case of an exact tie, 9 the prize money will be split evenly. For example: If two fish are tied for 2 nd place for a daily prize, the prize money for both 2 nd and 3 rd place will be split evenly between the two. The prize money for 4 th place would then go to the angler who caught the 3 rd largest fish; the prize money for 5 th place will go to the angler who caught the 4 th largest fish, etc. Should the situation arise 10 where there are not enough fish registered to claim all of the daily prizes, the unclaimed prize money will be split evenly amongst the winners that did win a prize that day. In the unlikely event that 11 no fish are registered during a tournament day at any location, the daily prize money for that location will be divided up equally amongst all of that location s participants. The Lodge Champion 12 prize packages awarded at both Englefield Bay and Whale Channel will be as follows: 1 st Place - $10,000, 2 nd Place - $8,000, 3 rd Place - $5,000 The Lodge Champion 13 prize package awarded at Hippa Island will be as follows: 1 st Place - $8,000, 2 nd Place - $6,500, 3 rd Place - $4,000 The Grand Prize will be 14 awarded to the angler who catches the heaviest registered Chinook salmon of the 09

tournament. This Grand Prize will be one of the following: $95,000 at Whale Channel, $95,000 at Englefield Bay, $99,000 at Hippa Island. Lodge Champion prizes 15 for each lodge and the Grand Prize will be announced on the last evening of the tournament, June All prize monies, including 16 Calcuttas, will be paid in the form of a cheque in Canadian dollars and will be distributed to the winners at the airport upon their return to Vancouver. An angler may register up 17 to two Chinook salmon in one tournament day as long as he is within his legal limits set forth by The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Immediately after a fish 18 has been retained the guide must tag it accordingly with the appropriate identification tag supplied to each guide for that day of the tournament. The guide must attach the 19 tag tightly through the jaw and then clip the excess tail of the tag to within 1 centimeter (1cm) of the connection point. Identification tags will be 20 issued each day to the guides. Unused tags must be returned at the end of each tournament day. Fish will not count as registered if brought to the 21 lodge by a boat other than the one it was retained in. An exception will only be made in the case of a boat switch due to mechanical or structural failure. A fish is considered registered once it has been 22 weighed, recorded and deemed eligible by a Tournament Official. A catch receipt, stating 23 the official weight of the fish, will be issued to each angler once the fish has been registered. Upon signing the receipt the angler acknowledges the stated final weight. At the time of registration, 24 fish will be posted on the fish board at the lodge where it was registered. All registered fish from all 25 lodges will be posted daily at each lodge at approximately 7:30pm. There will be a radio announcement each day at 26 approximately 10:00am and 3:00pm stating the leading fish of the tournament and the leading fish registered so far that day at that location. Tournament Officials will 27 use digital scales supplied by West Coast Resorts to weigh eligible fish. All anglers must comply 28 with the rules and regulations set forth by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. A complete copy of the regulations is available for reference at each lodge. 29 All boats must fish within the area defined by the tournament committee at 10

each location. 30 hook. 31 Passing a rod with a fish on the line from one boat to another is not permitted. The guide may not touch a rod at any time while a fish is on, including setting the Only three rods are permitted to be fishing at any 32 given time in a boat. This applies whether there are one or two anglers in the boat. The angler(s) in each boat will determine how the third rod will be shared. Tournament Officials will 33 be patrolling the fishing areas at all times during the tournament hours. An announcement by radio must be made immedi- 34 ately after a fish has been retained. This announcement must include the boat number of the angler that has retained the fish. This announcement must be acknowledged by an answer from another boat. In the event of a malfunctioning radio, the angler 35 must locate another boat immediately to make the announcement. Any boat is subject to an 36 inspection of fish, tackle, etc at any time by a Tournament Official. Should a Tournament Official inspect a boat and find 37 an untagged Chinook salmon aboard, all occupants of the boat will be disqualified from the tournament. Any fish brought in for 38 registration is subject to an examination (including innards) by a Tournament Official. Anglers may supply their 39 own rod and reel but must comply with the tournament rules. Any reel supplied by the 40 angler must be spooled with line not exceeding 30lb test. 41 Leader length may not exceed 12 feet in length. Mainline is restricted to a 42 maximum of 30lb test but leader line has no strength limitations. An angler may use any legal bait or lure of his or her 43 choice. Hooks used, however, must be supplied by West Coast Resorts. Any lure that has its own hooks must be replaced with the hooks provided by West Coast Resorts. Any lure that is designed in a way that the hooks cannot be replaced is eligible to use only if the barbs on the hooks are FILED off, not pinched down. 44 There will be a shotgun start at 5:00am each tournament day. The cut-off time each day 45 will be at 6:30pm. This will be signaled by a radio announcement made 45 minutes prior. 46 All boats at each lodge must pass through the 11

gate marked by two buoys located approximately 200 yards from the dock prior to the cut-off signal. Any unregistered fish on 47 board a boat not in compliance with rule #46 will be deemed non-eligible. An exception to this rule will be made only if the delay was caused by a mechanical breakdown that prevented the anglers from returning to the dock in time to beat the signal. This delay must be recognized and verified by the Tournament Officials at the time of the mechanical problem. The Tournament Committee at each location will be 48 responsible for making any boundary restrictions brought upon by weather conditions. The Tournament Committee at each location will 49 determine if a violation of the rules has occurred on a caseby-case evaluation. Any protests must be 50 made in writing and signed. They must be presented to the Tournament Committee no later than 9:00pm on the day of the alleged violation. 51 All decisions by the Tournament Committee are final. Anyone found to be in violation of the rules will be 52 disqualified from the tournament and forfeit any prize monies earned. This will also result in the immediate dismissal of the guide. Any forfeited prize money 53 will be split evenly between The Pacific Salmon Foundation and The Make-A- Wish Foundation. Every angler who does not 54 win a daily prize during the tournament will have their name entered into a draw where the winner of the draw will receive 2 entries in the IGFA Offshore Championship Tournament where they will join the 2 people who earned their spots in the same tournament by winning the Grand Prize of the Salmon Masters Tournament. Each angler will be required to fill out and sign a 55 photo/video release form and agrees to have their picture taken and published by West Coast Resorts. 12

smt lodge locations the lodge at whale channel The founding location of West Coast Resorts Annual Salmon Masters Tournament, Whale Channel is renowned for its early 30 plus pound king salmon bound for the Kitimat River. White chinook, also called ivory kings, make up about 40% of the Kitimat salmon run. These fish are legendary for their unrelenting toughness and large size. With calm waters, these salmon make their initial appearance in early to mid May; in fact, we have seen fish over 50 pounds as early as May 13th. Hot spots include, but are not limited to: Dougan Point, York Point, Waterfall, Eclipse Point, The Wall, The Slopbucket (site of the 2003 tournament winning fish), and the site of the 2010 tournament winning fish Red Fern. the lodge at englefield bay The Lodge at Englefield Bay has produced prize-winning catches since its induction into the tournament in 2004, including the largest ever caught during the tournament in a whopping 70.8lbs! This unique location on the west side of Haida Gwaii consistently provides spectacular sport fishing opportunities. Notably, one of our more remote locations, this lodge 15

experiences an abundance of both resident and migrating mature chinook salmon. The rugged coastline and dramatic continental shelf of Haida Gwaii, featuring long kelp beds, points, and underwater structure, provides an exciting playground for aggressive salmon ranging from 30 to 50 plus pounds. The rich concentrations of herring and needle fish fuel weight gain and fighting power in chinook salmon. Beginning in May, anglers at Englefield intercept the highest percentage of tyee salmon (fish over 30 lbs). Hot spots include, but are not limited to: Willie Island, Cape Henry, and Denham Point, the site of the 2004 winning fish caught mooching close to the kelp beds. the lodge at hippa island The May/June fishery at Hippa Island boasts an amazing run of Chinook (King) salmon, seeking out schools of baitfish on local atolls. Hippa Island is the most western point of Haida Gwaii and is perfectly positioned as the first landmass that migrating salmon will hit as they travel from the open ocean back to their native rivers. Characteristically, these fish convene and feed at numerous underwater pinnacles and ledges surrounding Hippa Island, bulking up before fighting their way as far south as the Columbia and Sacramento Rivers. This strategic location lends itself to some ferocious fishing, in one of the most scenic locations in all of Haida Gwaii. Located 50 miles north of Englefield Bay, Hippa produces similar sized salmon ranging from 30 to 50 plus pounds. Like rival siblings, competition will be fierce between all three saltwater lodges! 16

wcr supports salmon conservation Not only is West Coast Resorts celebrating the 10 th Anniversary of the Annual Salmon Masters Tournament, but being a longtime supporter of the Pacific Salmon Foundation as well! WCR recognizes that healthy, sustainable and diverse Pacific Salmon stocks are essential not only to recreational fishing, but to the coastal ecosystem as a whole. Over the years half of the proceeds from the Salmon Masters Tournament (in addition to many other fundraising initiatives) has been donated to the PSF, which had led to West Coast Resorts becoming one of the largest salmon conservation supporters in the industry. Such efforts have helped the Pacific Salmon Foundation invest over a thousand projects aimed at restoring and regenerating salmon in British Columbia, with many more currently under development. West Coast Resorts would like to thank all tournament anglers for their participation in a cause we are all so passionate about. Best of luck!
