6 About the 4 Strap Head Harness 4 strap head harnesses generally consist of two pieces of strap leather across the crown of the head in the transverse and longitudinal direction connected to a leather headband. Evolving from early ear protectors, most 4 straps have large ear flaps and minimal padding at the crown. Typified by the Spalding and Reach No. 35 head harnesses sold between 189 and 1902, 4 straps were also frequently made by leathersmiths upon request. For that reason, many varieties of the 4 strap were produced. Between 1908 and 1917 the 4 strap was reintroduced by sporting goods companies as an economical alternative for youth players.
