9.1. Purpose To provide all Total Oilfield employees with the basic information to: determine when Proper Protective Equipment (PPE) is necessary, what type to wear, how it should be worn, limitations of the PPE, proper care, use, maintenance and disposal of the PPE Outline PPE reduces the consequences of workers exposure to various worksite hazards. It is always preferable to eliminate hazards, however this is always possible and PPE must be worn. All workers must wear personal protective and safety equipment where potential for personal injury exists. No persons (including representatives of management, visitors, the public, inspectors, clients, or contractors) are permitted on Total Oilfield worksites without appropriate safety equipment. Total Oilfield will ensure all PPE is available and all employees and contractors are competent in their use. All employees and contractors will be trained in the proper care, use and maintenance of PPE. Standard PPE (Head protection, Eye protection, hearing protection, foot protection, hand protection and body protection) is required at all Total Oilfield worksites. It is important for workers to use good judgment in obtaining necessary specialized equipment to protect themselves and others against hazards associated with their job PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 5

9.3. Head Protection Hard hats must be worn at all times by workers on Total Oilfield worksites and meet the following criteria. Meet current federal CSA or ANSI standards. Be kept clean and visually inspected daily for cracks, flaws or deterioration, and discarded if found to be defective. Be worn with a properly adjusted suspension system. Not be painted, drilled, or modified in any way. The application of stickers on the hard hat should be kept in moderation as it weakens the shell. When you arrive at your orientation you are supplied with a hard hat that meets ANSI and CSA standards (ANSI standard Z ). Hard hats are equipped with a suspension so you can fit it to your own head size. Note: The Type 1 Top Impact Hard Hat is not designed specifically to protect against front, side, or rear blows PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 6

Installation of Hard Hat Suspension 1. Set the hard hat upside down on its crown. 2. Line up the suspension so the sweatband is at the front next to the brim. (Picture 1) 3. Fold the sweatband over the headband as you would wear it. 4. Fold the clips out and up. The strap will wrap between the clip and the headband and between the clip and the shell of the hard hat. 5. Push each of the four clips into its slot (Picture 2). You should feel and hear them click into place. Picture 1 Picture 2 Picture 3 For Fas-Trac suspensions turn the knob counter clockwise to open the ratchet band to its maximum size (Picture 3) Be sure the hard hat fits snugly and the suspension is tight against your head PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 7

Inspection of Your Hard-Hat Before and after each use, inspect the hard hat for wear and damage. Shell Inspect the shell for breakage, cracks, craze pattern, discoloration, chalky appearance, or any other unusual condition. Do not use the hard hat if the shell displays any of these conditions. Any of the above conditions can indicate the helmet has lost its capacity to protect from impact and penetration. Suspension Check the suspension for loss of flexibility. Check the suspension for cracks, breaks, frayed straps, or damaged stitching. If any of these conditions are found, replace the suspension before wearing the hard hat Hard Hat Care/Use Your hard hat must be cleaned regularly so it can be adequately inspected. Clean the hard hat assembly regularly with mild soap and warm water. A clean suspension also helps to avoid skin irritation. Do not throw, drop, or use the hard hat as a support or anything other than its intended use. Store your hard hat in a clean, dry environment. The application of stickers on the hard hat should be kept in moderation as it weakens the shell. Inspect the hard hat regularly and replace it or any part necessary; never take a chance with your safety. When you leave the comfort of your orientation, your new hard hat is your responsibility. It s your responsibility to inspect, clean and replace parts whenever needed PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 8

General Rule: Suspension Replace after a maximum of 12 months of use. Entire Hard Hat Replace after no more than five years of use. *Replace a hard hat after it has withstood impact or penetration.* NEVER: Use this hard hat as a vehicular or sports helmet. Store gloves, cigarettes, earplugs, etc. between the suspension and the shell. Objects in this space can transmit large forces to the head and neck, resulting in serious injury or death. Modify the hard hat in any way PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 9

9.4. Eye Protection/Face Protection Protective eye equipment must be worn at all field worksites. It is recommended contact lenses not be worn on the worksite due to the hazard created in the presence of toxic or explosive atmospheres. Safety goggles, safety glasses or a face shield will be worn when: Working on or around compressed air or steam hoses. Working with cleaning solvents. Handling acid or chemicals in liquid or powder form. Draining or breaking joints on any pressure vessel, line or equipment. Chipping, grinding or drilling with hand, pneumatic or electrical tools. Buffing or wire brushing with hand or power equipment. Performing any kid of pressure test. Lighting boilers, fire tubes or examining fires within each. Using hammer or cold chisels, centre punches or other impact tools. Working on any hot equipment, or when assisting a welder; as a protection against flash, approved coloured safety goggles will be worn. Working on or testing electrical equipment energized at a potential greater than 30 volts Safety Eyewear Approved safety eyewear will be dispensed from each branch to each eligible employee. Employees preferring to purchase their own safety eyewear may do so only if the glasses are CSA approved (CSA standard Z94.3) and are appropriate for the identified hazards PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 10

Prescription Safety Eyewear For those employees who require prescription safety eyewear, CSA approved prescription eyewear is available at industrial safety stores or select eye glass retailers. Prescription safety eyewear having bifocal, trifocal, or progressive glass lenses must not be used Proper Fitting It is important to ensure your safety eyewear fits properly. To achieve this, follow these simple steps: Eye size: Bridge size: Are the rims in the way of your eye-sight? Is the nose piece squeezing your nose? Do they fall off easily? Temple length: Are the lenses touching your eyelashes? Does it squeeze the back of your ears? The temples should fit comfortably over the ears, the frame should be as close to the face as possible and adequately supported by the bridge of the nose. Only you know if your safety goggles fit properly, any discomfort is a sign of an improper fit. Listen to your body. When fitting a face shield make sure the head piece is comfortable. (Refer to Fas-Trac suspension installation in the hard hat section.) 9.0. PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 11

Proper Care of your Safety Eyewear/Face Wear It is very important all eye and face protection be kept clean and properly maintained. Cleaning is particularly important where dirty or fogged lenses could impair vision. Safety glasses need maintenance. Clean your safety glasses daily. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid rough handling that can scratch lenses. Scratches impair vision and can weaken lenses. Store your safety glasses in a clean, dry place where they cannot fall or be stepped on. Keep them in a case when they are not being worn. Replace scratched, pitted, broken, bent or ill-fitting glasses. Damaged glasses interfere with vision and do not provide protection. Replace damaged parts only with identical parts from the original manufacturer to ensure the same safety rating Safety Glasses Safety glasses are worn to protect the eyes from hazardous impacts such as particles, objects and fragments and must be worn whenever the hazard of flying objects is present Safety Goggles Safety goggles, like safety glasses are worn to protect the eyes from hazardous impacts such as particles, objects and fragments. Goggles fit the face immediately surrounding the eyes and form a protective seal. Safety glasses form a seal around the eyes to prevent liquids, dust and chemicals from entering the eye area Safety Shields Face Shields, like safety goggles and glasses, are made to protect the user from impact hazards. Face shields alone do not protect employees from impact hazards and should be used with safety glasses or goggles PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 12

Safety Welding Helmets Welding Helmets are also secondary protectors made to protect the face from radiation, heat and impact. Welding helmets are to be used in addition to other protection such as safety glasses Hearing Protection Educating workers in protecting themselves from exposures to excessive noise, both on the job and in leisure time pursuits, is an important aspect of a hearing conservation program. Hearing protection is necessary because exposure to even moderately high levels of continuous noise can damage hearing permanently. The effects are often not immediately apparent, but may take years to become known to you. All workers using a hearing protection device must be trained in its proper use, and have an understanding of its limitations. Clearly visible warning signs shall be posted at all entrances to area where the noise level exceeds 85 dba. Ear protection must be worn beyond this point. Hearing Protection is available in two basic forms: earplugs and earmuffs and must meet the requirements of CSA Standard Z PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 13

Earmuffs Earmuffs can be used in conjunction with earplugs Proper Fitting Earmuffs are designed to fit almost everyone. They work to block out the noise by completely covering the outer ear. A proper fit should completely cover the ears Caring For Your Earmuffs Keep away from dirt and other particles by storing in a dry place, like a zip-lock bag or carrying case Earplugs Ensure you dispose of your earplugs after each use as dirty earplugs can lead to an ear canal infection. Custom fitting ear plugs are not permitted because as you move and talk the ear plugs become loose and lessen hearing protection Proper Fitting 1. Compress by rolling the plug between your fingers. Reach behind your head and pull your ear back. With the other hand, put the plug into the ear canal. Push in the opposite direction you are pulling your ear, down and toward the front of your head. Remove earplugs slowly with a twisting motion to break the seal as removing them quickly can damage your ears. 2. Hold the ear plug between your thumb and forefinger. Roll and compress the entire ear plug to a small, crease-free cylinder. While still rolling, use your other hand to reach over your head and pull up and back on your outer ear. This straightens the ear canal, making way for a snug fit. 3. Insert the ear plug and hold for 20 to 30 seconds. This allows the ear plug to expand and fill your ear canal PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 14

4. Test the fit. In a noisy environment, and with earplugs inserted, cup both hands over your ears and release. You should not notice a significant difference in the noise level. If the noise seems to lessen when your hands are cupped over your ears, your ear plugs are probably not fitted properly. Remove and refit following instructions. 5. Always remove ear plugs slowly, twisting them to break the seal. If you remove them too quickly, you could damage your ear drum Caring for your earplugs It is important to keep your earplugs clean and free of ear wax as this will reduce their effectiveness. The best way to clean your earplugs is with soapy water. Store them in its original carrying case or a plastic bag. CSA classifies muffs and ear plugs as Class A, B or C or grade 1, 2, 3 or 4 based on the level of protection they provide. Schedule 3, Table 2 of the OHS Code summarizes the minimum levels of protection required. Maximum equivalent noise level (dba Lex) CSA Class of hearing protection CSA Grade of hearing protection 90 C, B or A 1, 2, 3, or 4 95 B or A 2, 3, or A 3 or A A earplug + A or B earmuff > 110 A plug + A or B earmuff and limited exposure time to keep sound reaching the worker s ear drum below 85 dba Lex 3 or 4 earplug + 2, 3, or 4 earmuff 3 or 4 earplug + 2, 3, or 4 earmuff and limited exposure time to keep sound reaching the worker s ear drum below 85 dba Lex To be of value, hearing protection must be used properly and when in a noisy area. For maximum protection, hearing protection must make a tight seal within the ear canal or against the side of the ear. Modifying hearing protectors to reduce discomfort such as drilling holes in ear cups, reducing headband tension of earmuffs or by trimming or removing flanges on premoulded earplugs can seriously compromise effectiveness. Hearing protection must also be compatible with other equipment such as hard hats, safety eyewear, eyeglasses and masks so that it provides the level of protection originally intended PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 15

9.6. Foot Protection Each employee will be required to purchase and wear his or her own safety footwear. The safety footwear must be CSA approved and display a green CSA triangle. Your CSA approved work boots (CSA Standard Z195-02) must have protective toes; a sole made of a material resistant to oil/chemical and come up higher than your ankle. Sport or running shoe style footwear will not be permitted. Footwear is an item that will be inspected on a regular basis. Employees donning incorrect footwear will be sent home or subsequently banned from particular worksites Proper Fit Be sure your safety boots are comfortable as you will be spending a lot of time in them. Ensure you wear your boots for a couple of days around the house to break them in. Do not expect footwear which is too tight to stretch with wear. Walk in new footwear to ensure comfort. Boots should have ample toe room (toes should be about 12.5 mm from the front). Make allowances for extra socks or special arch supports Boots should fit snugly around the heel and ankle when laced. Fully lace up boots. High-cut boots provide support against ankle injury. Puncture resistant pole and steel toes protection. Non-steel toed boots will keep feet warmer in winter and can be lighter Proper Care Use protective coating to make footwear water resistant. Inspect footwear regularly for damage. Repair or replace worn or defective footwear. (i.e.: steel is showing on toe) 9.0. PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 16

9.7. Hand Protection Gloves must be worn appropriate to the work being done and the nature of the hazard involved, such as pure rubber or neoprene gloves for handling corrosive or toxic chemicals; cotton, wool, or leather gloves for routine work Selection of Chemical Protective Gloves Just wearing gloves is not good enough; the correct type of glove has to be selected for the task at hand. Remember that NO glove material will remain impervious to a specific chemical forever and NO one glove material is resistant to all chemicals. Information specifying the best type of chemical protective material is on the MSDS Inspection of Hand Protection Before each use, gloves should be inspected for discoloration, punctures, and tears. Rubber and plastic gloves may be checked by inflating with air and submersing them in water to check for air bubbles Caring for your Chemical Gloves Before removal, gloves should be thoroughly washed, either with tap water or soap and water PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 17

9.8. Body Protection Only clothing suitable for the job and worksite may be worn. Loose, ragged or torn clothing must not be worn when working around rotating or moving machinery or equipment. On a worksite with vehicle traffic, all workers present must wear a safety vest, armlets or other high visibility clothing. Fire resistant clothing must be worn at all times when working on all hydrocarbon production sites. Fire resistant clothing is worn to minimize burn related injuries where a potential exists for flash fire or explosion. Fire Resistant Clothing not adequately covering the body such as short sleeves or short pants is not permitted. As part of Total Oilfield s new hire orientation you are fitted for fire resistant (FR) coveralls and insulated fire resistant (FR) coveralls. Workers must ensure clothing worn beneath flame resistant outerwear and against the skin is made of flame resistant fabrics or natural fibres that will not melt when exposed to heat. A correct fit is important in ensuring proper protection The Proper Coverall Fit The proper fit of your coveralls is an important piece of PPE frequently overlooked. Arm Length The length of the sleeve should be long enough to come down past your wrists but not touch the thumb. Any longer than this will get caught-up and may cause a serious incident. Pant-Leg Length The bottoms of your coveralls when you have your steel toes boots on should be long enough to protect your legs but not too long as to hit the floor and cause a tripping hazard PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 19

Proper Care Caring for your coveralls is important because you wear them every day. If onsite facilities are unavailable you are required to take your coveralls home and follow these simple cleaning instructions: Machine wash separate. Warm water. (not too warm as higher temperatures will damage the fabric quality and lead to color fading) No chlorine bleach or softeners. (softeners have elements which are flammable) Tumble dry at 60 C. Coveralls can be both dry-cleaned or washed in your home without any harmful effects. Regular washing is not recommended when coveralls have a lot of grease and oil on them so taking them to an approved cleaning facility is mandatory Proper Usage Coveralls, when worn properly, are fire-resistant and protect against a number of other hazards, but only when you adhere to its proper fit. Coveralls will be replaced as required. Rips and tears are to be addressed as soon as possible. Ensure legs and sleeves aren t too long. Don t wear the coveralls on your own personal time as this could cause more damage to them. Be sure all the proper snaps and buttons are done up PPE Care, Use and Maintenance Page 20
