1 Page 1 of 5 REFERENCES Field Safety Requirements 1.30 Confined Space Entry Code of Practice 1.1 PURPOSE The following identifies the standards for personal protective equipment applicable for all Bandit Pipeline field personnel. The requirements for wearing personal protective equipment have been summarized in Field Safety Requirements. This standard applies to all employees, contractors and visitors. STANDARDS Foot Protection Workers must wear protective footwear at all operating sites. Footwear must meet CSA Standard CAN Z195-M92, Class 1. The footwear must: Have enough traction and support for the work. Protect the worker from heat, cold, moisture, chemicals and other hazards. Must be 6 inches above the ankle Fire Retardant Clothing (FRC) All fire retardant clothing must meet CSA standards and be able to withstand a three- second flash fire. It must provide full-body protection, including arms, torso and legs and be worn as the outer layer of clothing. Workers should choose FRC suited for the work they do and wear clothing made of 100% cotton under the FRC to provide extra thermal protection. All field personnel are required to wear FRC clothing at all work sites where there is potential for a flash fire. Bandit Pipeline Rev

2 Page 2 of 5 All Pipelines work sites / activities are deemed to have a flash fire potential and require FRC outerwear clothing except for the following: offices and shops located outside of hazardous areas; surface work on a right-of-way where no surface equipment exists and no machine excavation is taking place; Telephone or utility company service calls. Visitors will wear FRC unless otherwise approved by site management. A number of fire retardant coveralls are available for visitors. Employees and Contractors are expected to supply their own FRC and should be notified of this requirement before they are hired. Eye Protection Eye protection must meet CSA Standards (CAN/CSA ). Workers must wear CSA safety glasses with side shields on all operating sites with the exception of: offices; entering and leaving shop areas; designated smoking areas; and, vehicles. Not withstanding the above, any location where the nature of the work presents an eye hazard, chemical goggles or face shields are required. Face shields are not primary eye-protection devices and must be worn with safety glasses or goggles for any work that involves cutting, grinding, chipping or buffing. Bandit Pipeline Rev

3 Page 3 of 5 Hand Protection Hand protection suitable for the relevant job hazards is required for all jobs. This includes but is not limited to the following circumstances: Physical Leather gloves for general work activity involving rough objects. Cut-resistant or Kevlar gloves when working around sharp objects or knives. Chemical Polyvinyl Chloride Gloves when working with acids and caustics (not rated for use with hydrocarbons). Nitrile Gloves when working with hydrocarbons, varsol, gasoline, etc. (not suitable for BHC-Benzene Heart Cut). Silver Shield Gloves when working with BHC Benzene Heart Cut (NOTE: Wear normal leather work gloves over these when there is a potential for rips and tears). Use of Chemical resistant gloves is limited by their permeability, degradation and wear: All glove material is porous (permeable) and all chemicals will migrate through the material. o Chemicals can be detected on the inside of the glove ranging from minutes up to 8 hours (8 hours is the typical time manufacturers will guarantee the glove against permeability). o Chemical resistant gloves should be changed after maximum of 8 hours contact with the chemical. Fall-Arresting Devices Lanyards Lanyards must meet standards in CSA Z , Fall Arresting Belts and Lanyards for the Construction Industry. A fall arrestor or lanyard must be no longer than 2 metres (6 feet). Workers must: Tie off fall arrestors or lanyards to prevent falls of more than 1.2 metres (4 feet). Where possible, these must be tied to a structure above the work area to minimize the fall distance. Bandit Pipeline Rev

4 Page 4 of 5 Securely fasten fall arrestors or lanyards to a safety harness and a fixed support that will withstand 22 kilonewtons (5000 pounds). (The fixed support must not be the platform from which the work is being done.) Use shock absorbers when using wire rope, inelastic lanyards or when the fall distance cannot be limited to 1.2 metres (4 feet). Workers on a swinging scaffold must tie their fall arrestor to a lifeline. The lifeline must be fastened to the top of the tank, chimney or building where the worker is working and drop free to the ground. Safety Belts Safety belts, where permitted (as approved by the Area Supervisor), must meet standards in CSA Z , Fall Arresting Belts and Lanyards for the Construction Industry. Workers must not use safety belts to arrest falls. Safety belts used for that purpose might injure the worker. They will, therefore, be used only to restrict movement to: prevent a fall; avoid hazards (e.g. to keep away from the edge of a roof top or open structure); or, prevent a slip into an open structure (e.g. pits and ponds). Safety Harnesses Safety harnesses must meet the design specification outlined in CSA Standard Z M90, Full Body Harnesses. Workers must wear a five-point safety harness with leg and shoulder straps and a fall arrestor or lanyard when working in the following conditions: on an unguarded structure that s more than 3 metres (10 feet) above the nearest safe level; from any structure where the worker might fall more than 3 metres (10 feet); from a swinging scaffold or bosun s chair; on decks and open scaffolds; with 2 metres (6 feet) of a flat roof s edge; Bandit Pipeline Rev

5 Page 5 of 5 in man baskets (Tie off to an independent point above the hook assembly. If the basket is equipped with a second independent safety point, tie off to the basket.); in a man lift (Tie off to a secure point on the lift.); in a confined space (as a lifting device for entry and exit) where harmful atmospheres are present or might develop. (See PPM Section 7.1,Confined Space Entry for procedure.)
