Making his first career start, Lane caught a career high four receptions for 44 yards and one touchdown. Turnovers made the difference Friday Night By Sam Roach In a game that was much closer than the score indicated King s dropped their Cascade Conference opener 35 7 last Friday night to Archbishop Murphy at Terry Ennis Stadium. Playing with four starters not suited up because of injuries, in the end, it was big plays and turnovers that put the game out of reach. Archbishop Murphy s first play from scrimmage was a 33 yard pass completion that put the ball in King s territory. The drive ended with a 20 yard scoring strike that gave the Wildcats the lead that they never relinquished. King s did adjust to the ATM offensive attack as the game progressed and, although the Wildcats were able to move the ball, they were not able to score in the manner which they were accustomed to doing. The defensive front, led by Taylor Schoenfeld, Avery Haman, Jerad Stretton, Johnny Chen, and Jace Fransen, took away the misdirection plays and the passing game and forced ATM to rely solely on their power running game in the first half. Late in the second quarter, ATM drove deep into King s territory but were denied, forcing the home team to attempt a field goal that was blocked. A King s fumble on the ensuing play however, was recovered in the end zone for the second ATM score. In the locker room at halftime, Coach Jim Shapiro told his team how proud he was of their effort and to keep playing hard. They took his words to heart. In the third quarter, King s cut the lead to a touchdown when Luke Marion found Max Lane in the end zone for a seven yard scoring strike. In the fourth quarter, King s, trailing again two touchdowns, was able to move the ball effectively but they could not score. Fransen was especially effective as a receiver finding soft spots in the ATM secondary and gaining substantial yardage after the catch. Fransen finished the game with 78 yards on 9 receptions. ATM scored twice in the final two minutes of the game to effectively put the game out of reach. King s next game will be September 22 against Cedarcrest at home.
3 Down on the Farm: J.V. Knights drop home opener to Archbishop Murphy By Sam Roach Hey Coach. Put me and Colin in. We ll get you the ball back. This was what junior defensive end David Galloway told Coach Duncan Cull late in the junior varsity game on Monday. Cull shrugged his shoulders and sent them in. Two plays later, the Knights had the ball back because Galloway had recovered a fumble and the Archbishop Murphy Wildcat drive had been successfully stopped. On Monday afternoon at Woolsey Stadium the King s J.V. Knights were defeated by Archbishop Murphy 17-0 in what was, after the first quarter, an evenly matched defensive game. The visiting ATM Wildcats scored on their first two drives to jump out to a 14-0 lead before the Knights defense adjusted to the misdirection of ATM Wing T offense. The two teams exchanged possessions in the second quarter until late in the period when Archbishop Murphy looked to be in a position to put the game out of reach. Following a penalty for pass interference on the Knights, ATM had the ball, first and goal on the 5 yard line before a great individual effort by Davis Campbell thwarted the drive. Campbell intercepted a pass three yards deep in the end zone and ran it out 68 yards to effectively end the drive. Offensively the Knights, led by quarterback Casey Needham, running back Michael Bicknell and wide receivers Campbell and Jacob Gaenz could move the ball effectively in the middle of the field but could not score. The J.V. Knights next game will be Monday, September 25th at Cedarcrest in Duvall. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30.

Fumbles/lost 2/2 1/0 Traditions: The Story behind Number 4 Penalties 5/31 yds. 7/49 yds. By Sam Roach This is the twelfth season now that I ve been Director of Football Operations at King s High School and one of the things that I ve noticed is a tradition that has quietly emerged. It has to do with the jersey number 4 and the players who wear it. They are play makers. They re these guys who get into big games, and, whether it s on offense or defense or special teams, they just find a way to make a difference. This column is the first part of a three part series that will reveal the stories of the last four players who either wore or are currently wearing, jersey number 4 Part 1: Curtis Clauson Superman The recent tradition got its start in the fall of 2009 with Curtis Clauson. He was a junior wide receiver / free safety who was playing in his second year of high school football. Clauson had worn #85 the previous year because #4 had been taken by a senior. That senior graduated and, once #4 was available, Clauson snapped it up, probably because the other wide receiver on the team was Joseph Jaeger who wore #3. At the beginning of the 2009 season, neither of those two were the face of King s High School football in a manner of speaking. That honor probably went to Thomas Vincent, the quarterback. He was the guy everyone was talking about and the primary wide receiver was a senior named Nick Swanson. By the end of the year however, Clauson had made a name for himself and the whole Cascade Conference knew who he was. That year there were two games in the playoffs that Clauson especially made his mark in. The first game was the District 1 Playoff game against Friday Harbor. King s was the number one seed from the Cascade Conference but nothing was guaranteed. They had been the number one seed the previous year too and had gotten their hats handed to them by Lynden Christian. The game started fairly evenly, both teams traded touchdowns. Then came the second quarter and Clauson took over. He caught a touchdown pass from Vincent, and returned both an interception and a punt for touchdowns. The punt return came on the final play of the first half and what was significant about it was that it revealed his knowledge of the game. He had distanced himself from everyone by at least fifteen yards and could have gone into the end zone with five seconds remaining. Instead of doing that though and giving Friday Harbor a chance to return a kick off for a score, he ran parallel to the goal line on the half yard line until the clock ran out before scoring that touchdown. Not many players would have that kind of game awareness in the moment. By the time the game had ended, King s had punched their ticket to the State Tournament with a victory and, of the six touchdowns the Knights had scored, Clauson was responsible for five of them. The next week Onalaska from District 4 came to town for the First Round game. It was a Saturday night. The Loggers, with an 8-1 record, would be a much stiffer test. This was just the kind of game that guys wearing that number 4 stepped up in. Onalaska led for most of the game and, in terms of receiving yards, Clauson was quiet. He hadn t been targeted all game. Vincent and Jaeger were the play makers until the fourth quarter and then Clauson made his mark.
5 Traditions: The Story behind Number 4 With King s trailing by a touchdown, Vincent found the junior in the back of the end zone for a six yard score that would tie the game. It was the only reception that Clauson would have in the game. It was in the overtime period that Clauson made his biggest mark perhaps in his entire career. In a play that has been named Superman in a YouTube video highlighting the game, after Onalaska scored a go ahead touchdown in their first possession, on the extra point try, Clauson lining up on the edge of the defensive right, flew in untouched to block the kick and keep the Onalaska lead at six points. In the Knights possession, Vincent scored from two yards out to tie the game and Swanson sealed the deal with a successful conversion. During Clauson s senior year, his reputation for playing his best in big games just continued to the point that one photographer who was shooting the Knights that year was quoted as saying: It feels kind of strange because my galleries look like a highlight album of number 4 but he s just always making plays. He started the season with an 88 yard kick off return for a touchdown at Lakeside that made the 6 o clock news on the local stations. His biggest game of the year however might have come in Week 6 of the season against the Lakewood Cougars. The game was a typical Lakewood vs. King s game. Close with a lot of scoring to the point that the team that had the ball last would probably win. It featured two of the best quarterbacks in the Cascade Conference, Vincent for King s and Justin Lane for Lakewood, both of whom would go on to play college ball. In the pre-season article in August, the writers for the Photo by Tom Burley Photo by Tom Burley Herald had said that this would be a showcase game. It turned out to equal the hype. It was an offensive highlight reel from the start. There was only one punt in the entire game and none in the first half. Lakewood scored first and King s countered. Back and forth it went and at halftime, King s enjoyed a lead. King s Offensive Coordinator, Todd Green, a coach who thrived on completion, exclaimed, this is just awesome! as he entered the locker room. The outcome was a Knights win that tarnished Lakewood s homecoming celebration. Vincent produced the most offensive numbers for King s but Clauson s playmaking on both sides of the ball sealed the win in the end. The senior had five receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns in the 4th quarter, eight solo tackles, one interception and one final play that although it didn t make the stat sheet, secured the win. Late in the 4th quarter, King s had taken an 11 point lead when Lakewood scored to cut the lead to a field goal. Lakewood had time for one last shot but Clauson snuffed it out by recovering the onside kick that allowed King s to hang on for the win. After graduation, Clauson didn t go far from King s. He moved about ten miles south where he attended the University of Washington. As a Husky, he hung up his cleats in order to pursue another passion of his. Clauson threw the javelin for the Huskies and became an important part of the Husky track program placing 9th in Nationals at the 2015 NCAA Championships.
