4 LeCras fresh for 200th game It s a lot of footy! was the straight-to-the-point response from one of the most versatile players in the WAFL on the confirmation he would play his 200th senior game this weekend. Brent LeCras, who is having a remarkable season playing mostly from centre half back for the league-leading Falcons, said he was almost embarrassed at joining the illustrious club. I knew I was around the mark, but wasn t sure quite when it was coming up, said LeCras who turns 30 in October. A while ago I spoke to Callum Chambers and Craig Smoker (former Falcons teammates) about the 200 club and all we could say was how much footy that involved. They are both 200-game players and I m sure when we re older and looking back it will be something we ll be proud of. LeCras, who made his WAFL debut with the Falcons in 2002 and won a Simpson written by Tracey Lewis Medal in their premiership team the next year, was drafted by North Melbourne as a forward. He has carved a reputation as a strong-leading forward at both WAFL and State football level, but it was an approach to Falcons coach Bill Monaghan to head back to defence that has revitalised his passion for the game. I ve played a lot of my career in the backline but was drafted as a forward, LeCras said. I met with Bill pre-season and asked if I could play more in defence. He said as long as it worked with the team structure he was putting together then we d give it another go and I think it s freshened me up. I don t really mind where I play as long as we are winning! Forward or back, I don t really prefer one over the other, but the move this year has certainly been a good one so far. LeCras football is also reflecting the stability of his life off the field. His little boy Koby has just turned three and he is in the final year of a plastering apprenticeship although his heart really lies with crayfishing. I come from a crayfishing family and I was doing a bit of that in 2009 when Bill started coaching at West Perth but it s hard to combine with football, he said. Work won t dictate how long I keep playing for though, that will all depend on how I m feeling and what Bill thinks. At the moment though I am still enjoying it and our team this year is as consistent as it s been in a few years. Previously we were losing games we shouldn t and winning games we shouldn t but this year things are running more smoothly and hopefully we can keep that going into the last round when we have the bye and then into the finals. We ve probably exceeded outside expectations this year but internally we believed we were going to be in a good position to challenge the best teams in the league. We ve got Claremont this week and it s a massive game for us to stay ahead of the pack. Brent LeCras record: West Perth ( , 2005, ) games North Melbourne ( ) -- 6 games Port Melbourne ( ) games North Ballarat (2006) games Port Adelaide (2007) games Western Australia -- 4 games Total: 199 senior games I met with Bill pre-season and asked if I could play more in defence. He said as long as it worked with the team structure he was putting together then we d give it another go and I think it s freshened me up. Brent LeCras. 4

11 WAFC South Perth Stingrays reward dedication SOUTH Perth Junior Football Club received $1000 worth of Sherrin Footballs from NAB after former SPJFC player and now Collingwood star Sharrod Wellingham scored a super goal in the 2011 AFL NAB Cup. South Perth Stingrays Team Manager Darryl Sinclair and 17s Coach Grant Edmunds used the opportunity to pay tribute to dedicated players at the club and in particular those who have reached significant milestones. As a way of thanking the players who returned to South Perth to play their final year of footy and for players reaching milestones during the season it was decided that this was a wonderful way to say thank you for continuing to play football, Sinclair said. Young men these days have many choices and can go and play other sports or simply stay at home on a Sunday. Edmunds said to play 150 games showed great commitment to the club over many years of junior football. You need a bit of luck with not being injured but it means these boys have rarely missed a game, he said. The players were really appreciative of NAB Mobile Banker Damon Fowler coming out and presenting them with footballs and Stingrays Captain Matt Rodan said it was great that NAB provided this type of recognition to junior clubs. South Perth was one of 14 junior clubs in Australia to receive footballs through the NAB Cup initiative. y NAB s Damon Fowler with Jake Howes 100 games, Kyle Sinclair 150, Captain Matt Rodan 100, Kieran Edmunds 150 and Callum Jepp 100. 14 GAME PREVIEWS written by Andrea Damonse SUBIACO V SOUTH FREMANTLE Esperance Despite suffering a loss in one of the games of the season last Sunday South Fremantle sit comfortably in third. Subiaco only has two games out of their last seven against top four teams, including this week against the Bulldogs, which should give them an edge over Swan Districts and Perth who are also pushing for a finals spot. In their last encounter South Fremantle overcame the loss of captain Jaymie Graham and a sizable ruck disadvantage to pick up their fifth consecutive win. Forwards Ryan Murphy and Paul Mugambwa rucked in his absence, putting in a good effort at first against the league s top ruckman in Michael Rix before Rix dominated the stoppages with a massive 49 hit outs. Rix, who missed last week with work commitments, is averaging 38 hit outs a game as the league s best ruckman, though Subiaco have struggled with translating his success onto the scoreboard. Kyal Horsley is in scintillating form for the Lions, while Blake Broadhurst and Danny Hughes will be a focus for the Bulldogs defence after both kicked five goals last weekend. Paul Hasleby is finding some form for the Bulldogs, while Ashton Hams is set to play his 100th game this week for the Bulldogs and Jason Bristow is set to play his 50th for Subiaco Overall record: Subiaco won 142, South Fremantle won 178, Blake Drawn 3 Broadhurst PEEL V EAST FREMANTLE Bendigo Bank Stadium Peel needs a win this week to avoid reaching an ugly milestone with a loss bringing it to 100 defeats at its home ground Bendigo Bank Stadium. East Fremantle is two games clear of the three teams chasing its top four spot and was lucky with results going its way during the bye. The Sharks play the other top four teams in three of their last four games of the season, so will need to string together wins prevent dropping out of the four. Peel fell at the chance to pick up their third win in a row for just the third time in club history in the loss to East Perth last week, though the Thunder continue to improve with standout defensive efforts from Jordan Jones and Blayne Wilson who kept the dangerous Adam Prior to just one goal, while Matthew Brown had 17 disposals and laid five tackles to be Peel s best. Earlier this season East Fremantle s large AFL contingent led the way though the Sharks left it late to secure the win over the Thunder, kicking three goals six in the final quarter allowing Peel to stay in the game. In recent weeks however it has been more of a hindrance than a help, with the Sharks receiving little service from their host of AFL players whose ball use harmed their team s chances against Subiaco. Overall record: Peel won 8, East Fremantle won 27 Matthew Brown WEST PERTH V CLAREMONT Arena Joondalup West Perth last week all but secured a second semi-final berth with the win over Subiaco and this week s top two clash against Claremont sure to be a memorable one. The top-placed Falcons have now won 11 of their 13 matches and are three games clear of third-placed South Fremantle. Despite having no more than a two goal lead throughout the game against the Lions, the Falcons controlled play and were able to overcome blustery conditions and at times use them to their advantage. Claremont produced another thrilling game with their three point win over South Fremantle widening the gap between the top two and the rest of the competition. Last time the two teams met it was West Perth putting an end to Claremont s undefeated start to the season, despite the Tigers five goal stretch in the fourth. Led by captain Jason Salecic, the Falcons defence carried them through the game, shutting down a potent Claremont forward line. The work of Salecic and Matt Guadagnin in the middle will need to be paid close attention to by an equally potent Claremont mosquito fleet. Chad Jones missed last week s game against South Fremantle with hamstring soreness though he could be a chance to re-join the Tigers line up. Anton Saylor is set to play his 50th game for West Perth this week. Overall record: West Perth won 146, Claremont won 100, Anton Saylor Drawn 1 ABC TV WAFL Guide All games broadcast from 2pm Round West Perth v Claremont Round East Perth v Perth Round East Fremantle v East Perth Round Peel Thunder v Subiaco Round Subiaco v Perth Round East Fremantle v West Perth 14

17 Esperance a picture-perfect paradise The Esperance region is paradise for lovers of the water. Its beaches are amongst the best in the world. West of town is the Great Ocean Drive, a 40km loop with Twilight Beach just one of the highlights. You can either drive or follow the cycling/walking path from town, past West Beach and Blue Haven. Stop at Tanker Jetty to say hello to Sammy the Seal and on the way back into town you can also stop at the Pink Lake lookout. Cape Le Grand National Park is situated east of Esperance and the sealed road goes all the way to Lucky Bay (65kms from town), which was voted Australia s whitest beach. A climb to the top of Frenchman s Peak provides panoramic views of the surrounding areas. Cape Le Grand is one of the best spots to watch wildflowers and southern right whales (in season). And if you want to go further east, Orleans Bay and Cape Arid National Park also offers kilometres of squeaky white beaches and some 4-wheel-driving. But Esperance is not only about beaches. The Kepwari Trails in the wetlands are just a five-minute drive from town. The trail winds through fringing sedge-lands, heathlands, under banksias canopies and over dune ridges and bird hides offer the perfect spot for bird watching. Also just outside of town is Lake Monjingup Nature Reserve, offering pristine bushland, wonderful wildflowers, prolific birdlife, walk trails and board walks. If you keep going west you get to Stokes National Park, about 85kms from Esperance. Enjoy beautiful coastal and inlet scenery and an easy walk with on-site plaques describing changes which have occurred to the environment, and look-outs. Right in the town centre is the Museum Village with the Municipal Museum and various little shops, including the Esperance Visitor Centre. 24 WAFL Collectables In this week s WAFL collectables, Sean Cowan looks at a neverbefore-seen predecessor to the Football Budget dating back to In the coming weeks, the Football Budget will continue to feature different items of WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home It seems the Football Budget has not always been WA s football Bible. Despite having been around since 1921, when it was called WA Footballer, the Budget actually had a predecessor whose mere existence had been lost in time until recently. And putting a value on copies of that predecessor is a very difficult job. Two copies of the 1913 publication The Goal Post recently came to light and research about the history of the publication has revealed it was published in Fremantle and sold on the Friday afternoon before the Saturday fixtures. It was certainly similar in concept to the WA Footballer, featuring football gossip, team lists, ladders, photographs and advertisements in its 12 pages when it launched on May 30, Round 6 of the WAFL season. The man behind The Goal Post was Fremantle Printery owner Robert Samuel Wade, a native of the Victorian town of Horsham and a renowned sports lover. From what I have been able to find, Mr Wade probably published 20 editions of The Goal Post in under the patronage of the league - but is unlikely to have continued the venture into Mr Wade died of tuberculosis in 1923, aged 50, and his granddaughter Lynley said this week that the family didn t know of his involvement with the WAFL, where he had been a delegate of the nowdefunct North Fremantle club. The mere existence of The Goal Post puts WA ahead of South Australia in terms of developing an official program (the Croweaters Football Budget was launched in 1914). All that makes the publication very appealing to a collector. As for a value, in my opinion a single copy would have to be worth at least $200 and as high as perhaps $400. At that sort of price, you would be sitting on a little goldmine if you had all 20. Meanwhile, an interstate collector has been able to fill in a few holes concerning the available information about the rare and valuable 1947 set of cards featuring WA State players There were 25 numbered cards, each featuring a WA player at that year s Hobart Carnival. A couple of weeks ago in this column I said that just 13 had been seen. However, John from Victoria reports that he has seen another six and was able to provide the numbers for each. The information has been passed to the online Australian Football Cards history group, but we d love to be able to fill them in on the other missing cards. The missing card numbers are 3, 11, 14, 19, 22 and 24. The players for those numbers, in no particular order, should be Norm Wendt, Bill Alderman, Jack Sweet, Ron Tucker, Fred Buttsworth, and Bill O Neill. More importantly, the cards have no maker s mark and we would love to know who made them. Can anyone help? If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at blackswan@aapt.net.au or Sean Cowan, GPO Box N1025, Perth WA,

25 Umpires Carnival to recognise importance of umpiring THIS Saturday July 9, the Demons District is recognising the importance of supporting junior umpires with the inaugural Umpiring is Everyone s Business Carnival. The District, in partnership with the Demons District Football Umpires Association (DDFUA), Perth Football Club, Gosnells Junior Football Club and the AFL, will help promote the Umpiring is Everyone s Business campaign and celebrate the important role that umpires play in Australian Rules Football. At the important event Perth Football Club captain Steve Armstrong will join other WAFL players, AFL field umpires and the DDFUA s emerging umpires in umpiring an Under 12s Carnival. All junior clubs will come together to play football in a fun and safe environment and in doing so will recognise the role of the umpire and the importance of nurturing and supporting umpires for the betterment of grass-roots football. The demand for umpires at community level is not being met by the supply of umpires and if the current trend continues, the game at community level will suffer. Recruitment is difficult, but retention is the more significant challenge. Over the last few years umpire recruitment and retention in the Demons District has shown marked improvement and the Demons District has made significant achievements in emphasising the role that positive match day environments have in the recruitment and retention of umpires. The Umpiring is Everyone s Business Carnival will promote the campaign to an important participant group and at a level where the abuse of umpires can play a critical role in the recruitment and retention of umpires. The Carnival also builds upon last year s contribution to the Umpiring is Everyone s Business Campaign the Dean Margetts Promotional Game. Dean, a current AFL field umpire, returned to his original junior district and joined the DDFUA s field, boundary and goal umpires to umpire an Under 17s game between Gosnells All junior clubs will come together to play football in a fun and safe environment and in doing so will recognise the role of the umpire and the importance of nurturing and supporting umpires for the betterment of grass-roots football JFC and Kenwick JFC during the AFL split round. This event was hugely successful and was a unique experience for all involved. Margetts said he was particularly proud to again lend his support to promoting the campaign within the Demons District. I am very fortunate to be able to come back to the Demons District where my playing and umpiring days began, he said To be able come back representing the AFL Umpiring Department is something I am very proud of and I hope my career can show all participants from our District that you can make the elite system in whatever capacity you desire, if you are passionate enough about it. The carnival will be held from 8.30am-11.30am at Sutherlands Park, Gosnells.

28 Community Football By Andrea Damonse Gap widening in B Grade TIME is running out for teams looking to avoid relegation and move up the ladder, as the gap widens between the top and bottom teams in B Grade. Top team Hamersley Carine head to Burrendah Reserve to take on the seventh placed Willetton. Willetton is the third of three teams sitting on five wins with fifth spot up for grabs this week and a victory crucial in moving up the ladder. To move into fifth place the Blues would need both Stirling and West Coast Cowan to lose this week, with a lower percentage keeping Willetton down. Last time the two teams met it was Hamersley Carine at home with the win, beating Willetton (86) to 6.9 (45). Stirling also has a chance to move into the top five should it win and West Coast Cowan lose this week, though to do that they will need to beat the third placed Swan Athletic at Fawell Park. Swan Athletic have lost just twice to the other top five teams, including draws with Hamersley Carine and Kalamunda, though at home they have had less success with two wins, two losses and two draws this season at Fawell Park. In their Round 4 match Stirling lost at home by 19 points to Swan Athletic. Stirling also has a chance to move into the top five should it win and West Coast Cowan lose this week, though to do that they will need to beat the third placed Swan Athletic at Fawell Park. Kingsley faces a tough task this week taking on the second-placed Wembley at Kingsley Park. Kingsley sit in ninth, with just two wins and a draw to their name, and look almost set for the trip down to C Grade next season. However they are one-and-a-half games behind Melville and if they can string enough wins together they may still be in with a chance to move up the ladder. In their Round 4 meeting it was Wembley who secured the win at home, defeating Kingsley by 20 points. Last week Wembley lost by one point in their first home loss of the season to Melville, while Kingsley picked up their second win of the season over West Coast Cowan. Wanneroo will have to produce some kind of miracle in order to avoid relegation as they seem all but guaranteed a spot in C Grade next year. The only team within bottom two distance however is Melville sitting two wins clear in eighth, and they will take on Wanneroo at home. Despite only winning two games this season Wanneroo have beaten Stirling and Willetton and have had closer games than their losing margins have shown. In their last encounter Melville beat Wanneroo at Wanneroo Showgrounds 7.5 (47) to (116). Fourth placed Kalamunda take on the fifth-sitting West Coast Cowan at Ray Owen Reserve in a match that is a must win for West Coast in order to stay afloat in the top five. Both Stirling and Willetton are hot on their heels for fifth position, with just percentage keeping West Coast Cowan in the last finals spot. West Coast Cowan has played better on the road than at home, with four of its five wins coming away from City Beach Oval. Last time the two teams met it was West Coast Cowan losing at home 2.15 (27) to Kalamunda s (73). Kalamunda can move into third spot with a win this week, with draws against Swan Athletic and Kingsley along with losses to just two teams this season keeping them well clear of the fight for the last finals spot.
