It feels like yesterday when we started our planning for, yet this year of highs and lows is almost done as we depart on the Castle Outgoing Tour to Ireland, Scotland and England. We set ourselves high standards and we want to improve with each Test, but our young team is building valuable experience as we strive to constantly be amongst the top sides in world rugby. We re not there yet, but I do feel we ve laid a solid foundation thus far this year. Although we played good rugby at times in Dunedin and at Soccer City, we still lost, but at Loftus Versfeld and DHL Newlands we ve seen what this team can do. Like I ve said before, I don t like making promises about performance, simply because we don t control everything all the time, but what I can promise, is that we will knuckle down in the coming weeks and work as hard as possible to finish the season on a high. It s going to be a difficult tour and we realise that. The players are keen to end a tough season on a positive note, but Ireland, Scotland and England will pose different and difficult challenges in the coming weeks. Our squad is now more settled than before and apart from a number of injuries to key players, we ve assembled a very good group of men to take on this tour. Ireland did well in the Six Nations and pushed the All Blacks hard in Christchurch, and although all the results didn t go Scotland s way in, they showed what they are capable of by beating the Wallabies in Australia in June. We saw first-hand what England can do when they came to South Africa in June and we will not underestimate them at Twickenham, although the Springboks have done well there in the recent past. We are looking forward to experiencing Dublin, Edinburgh and London, as well as working with a very dedicated rugby press corps over there. Our relationship with the media is an important one for the Springboks and I think we got off to a good start this season let s try and keep this up. I realise there will be times when we won t agree on certain topics, and in those instances, it would be good if we can sit down and have a good chat about it. I really hope you find the information in this Media Guide useful. Good luck with your jobs as well and we ll try and make it as easy for you as possible. You know where to get hold of De Jongh should you need anything from our side. Best wishes Heyneke Meyer Springbok Head Coach Foreword 3

4 bok media protocol Springbok Media Code of Conduct Members of the Springbok rugby team are visible and prominent ambassadors of South African sport. As a result the Springboks carry a lot of responsibility, not only to themselves but also towards the country as a whole and, by implication, our proud sporting history. As Springboks, we are aware of the role the media has to play in promoting the game of rugby as well as the Springbok team. It is therefore important that each and every team member abides by the Springbok Media Code, which is based on the following principles: The Springbok Media Policy is founded on mutual RESPECT between the Springbok team and the media. When dealing with the media, we will be courteous and helpful. At times this may be difficult when dealing with personal disappointment, but it is always necessary. The media is employed to cover this wonderful game and wherever possible we will aid them to do so honestly and without bias. Springbok team members will be readily ACCESSIBLE to the media. While bearing in mind that their primary purpose is to perform well on the playing field, the players also realise that rugby as professional sport needs marketability through exposure. At the same time, the media needs to be aware that the team s media duties should never intrude on or disrupt team preparations. The Springbok team and management will arrive ON TIME at the designated venue for all press conferences, interviews and other media commitments. Wherever possible we should be a few minutes early. We expect the media to be on time too. The Springbok team and management may conduct media conferences and interviews in whichever LANGUAGE they express themselves best. At the same time, we are always aware that at times some members of the media may not understand our chosen language and, if possible, we will speak the language they do understand. Translators should be used where necessary. The Springbok team and management feel open to DISCUSS media issues at team or management meetings. We also seek out each other s opinion in preparing press releases. Grievance procedure Complaints about the performance of the squad and management in the performance of their media responsibilities should in the first place be addressed to the Springbok communications manager. If media believe their concerns are being inadequately addressed, they should raise those concerns with the strategic communications manager. The Springbok communications manager will raise any concerns about the performance of a journalist with the individual concerned. If the Springbok management feel the issue has been inadequately resolved it may then be formally taken to the strategic communications manager for discussion. Media Principles Every effort will be made to satisfy media needs within the following media schedule and flexibility will be applied where possible. Media are advised to arrive in reasonable time for media opportunities but are warned that due to on-field preparations press conferences and mixed zones may not always start exactly as per schedule. Springbok personnel will only be available to media within the prescribed media windows. Please note that live interviews for radio and television will only be considered if requested at least 24 hours in advance and cannot be guaranteed. No interviews will be permitted before 7:30am (local time). Due to the predicted level of media interest it is expected that one-on-one interviews cannot be guaranteed. Any such requests have to be made via to the Springbok Media Manager. No media interactions will be permitted on Thursdays or Fridays (apart from the usual Captain s Media Conference, team photograph and filming and photo opportunities at the Captain s Run). The schedule is subject to change. All changes will be advised via Media Advisory per electronic release. Media are requested to take into account the various time differences when contacting the team for requests from abroad. bok media protocol If we are unhappy with something that has been reported about us, it will be discussed with the journalist concerned, in presence of the team media liaison if required. We reserve our right to CHALLENGE factual errors or misquotes. We seek clear and open channels of communication within the media. We will be as TRANSPARENT as possible with the media in all areas of planning, preparation and selections but also ask the media to understand that at certain times some of our preparations may need to remain private in order to best prepare ourselves. Dealings between the Springbok team and the media should always be conducted in good HUMOUR. Professional rugby is a serious business but there should always be an opportunity to share lighter moments with the media. Good humour is important to a happy team environment. 6 7
