2. Project Details 2.1 Introduction In principal, the concept of Kicks to Glory Project is very simple. What it comes down to is bringing a group of like-minded individuals, and organisations within the City of Greater Geelong to collect pre-loved football boots and distribute them to children in the Northern Suburbs who want to participate in playing Football but are being held back because they do not have access to a pair of football boots. 2.2 Vision To improve access to football boots for children in the Northern Suburbs of the City of the Greater Geelong To increase opportunities for children in the in the Northern Suburbs of City of Greater Geelong to actively participate to play Football by collecting second-hand, and new, football boots and distributing to the children at no cost to them or their parents. To promote to parents that their children s active participation in organised sport can have physical, mental and social benefits to their children as individuals and to their community. To help break down social barriers by promoting active participation in sport and physical activity To promote community engagement and ownership in the Kicks to Glory Program. 2.3 Mission To conduct research, form partnerships and create networks within the City of Geelong that enables like-minded individuals and organisations to collect, clean, store and distribute pre-loved football boots to children in the Northern Suburbs of the City of Greater Geelong who want to play Football. Kicks to Glory Page 4
3 s and Strategies 3.1 One Create an administrative structure for the project by: Establishing a Project Team Developing a Project Plan Holding regular Project Team Meetings Developing a Handover Plan A Kicks to Glory Project Team, consisting of: Maurice Morry Anderson, Kerry Sanders and Allan ( Fizz ) Robb, was formed. The members of the Project Team scheduled a series of regular meetings to plan and implement the mission of the Kicks to Glory concept. A meeting of the Kicks to Glory Project Team was held every month from the time of the team s formation. 3.2 Two Conduct extensive research on the concept of collecting, cleaning and re-distributing pre-loved football boots to children in the Northern Suburbs of the City of Greater Geelong who want to play Football. The Project decided to focus their research on finding answers to the following questions: 1. Is there is a need for this type of program? 2. Is there is a need for this type of program within the Northern Suburbs of the City of Greater Geelong? 3. If a need exists, is there a program currently operating in the Northern Suburbs of the City of Greater Geelong that addresses that need? Kicks to Glory Page 5
1. Is there is a need for this type of program? Research shows that children who participate in physical activity during adolescence are more likely to be physically active in later life. Research also shows that people who participate in sports or other types of physical activity at an early age (especially during adolescence) are more likely to be physically active adults. (Tammelin, 2005). Recent reports indicate that 54% of Australians are not doing enough physical activity to sustain good health. (Australian Institute Health & Welfare, 2008). The National Health Survey indicates that the G21 region has higher rates of physical inactivity compared to the rest of Victoria, with the highest being Corio. The Burden of Disease Study National and the Victorian Population Health Survey both indicate that differences in income, employment and place of residence are linked to differences in health outcomes. According to the evaluation findings, residents of Neighbourhood and Community Renewal areas rate consistently worse on social conditions, personal conditions and health outcomes than those living outside renewal areas. 2. Is there is a need for this type of program within the Northern Suburbs of the City of Greater Geelong? When Maurice ( Morry ) Anderson introduced the Kicks to Glory concept to the participants of the 2012 Barwon Community Leadership Program (BCLP) he backed his passion filled rhetoric up with strong anecdotal evidence. A majority of the twenty BCLP participants that were present that day agreed with Morry s views, and had anecdotal evidence of their own that supported the Kicks to Glory concept Research shows that Corio is in a Neighbourhood Renewal area that is rated as one of the most disadvantaged areas on the SEIFA Index (http;// and the 13 th most disadvantaged postcode in Victoria ( One dimensions of this disadvantage is social exclusion. Poverty and inequality also affects community networks and lifestyles which in turn influence health. ( The above statistics are compounded by the fact that people from lower socio-economic groups and low income areas, Indigenous people, refugees and people with disabilities already have particularly poor health. Many of these inequalities are preventable as they are not due to genetic or biological factors. Instead, they are related to inequalities in access to the things we all need for good health ( Kicks to Glory Page 6
3. Is such a program already operating in the Northern Suburbs of the City of Greater Geelong? Internet searches, newspaper articles and interviews with locals revealed two programs that are similar to the concept of Kicks to Glory. o Shoe Access A program that operated within the City of Greater Geelong as part of Leisure Networks programs. The program involved Leisure Networks collecting sporting equipment, sporting boots and sporting shoes at various locations within the City of Greater of Geelong which they then donated to children who were involved in their specific community projects and programs o The Boot Exchange Program A program that is currently operating in the Hamlyn Heights area within the City of Greater Geelong. The Boot Exchange concept involves collecting boots that can be used by children to play indoor and outdoor soccer. The boots are sold to the children for $3/pair. The Project Team s research did not identify any programs that are currently operating within the City of Greater Geelong whose primary focus is to address the need for increased opportunities for children in the Northern Suburbs of City of Greater Geelong to actively participate in playing Football through access to football boots at no cost to them or their parents. Kicks to Glory Page 7
3.3 Three Use the results of the research to make the following:- A list of resources that will be needed for the project to achieve its mission A list of potential stakeholders, partners and/or sponsors for the project The Project Team used the results of their research as the foundation for brainstorming sessions they held at informal meetings during the early stages of the project. Guests at these meetings included Brooke Connolly, Leisure Networks Geelong, Annabel Newnham, Program Manager, Barwon Community Leadership Program and Jean Paul, Program Director, Committee for Geelong, John Fitzgerald, Business Banking Officer, Bendigo Bank From the Project Team s brainstorming sessions emerged the following list of resources that will be needed for the project to achieve its mission:- Bins that can be used as collection, storage and dispensing receptacles for the pre-loved football boots. Appropriate chemicals that can be used to clean and deodorise the pre-loved boots. Posters/flyers to advertise the collection and distribution points for the project. The brainstorming sessions also produced the following list of potential stakeholders, partners and/or sponsors for the project:- City of Greater Geelong (stakeholder/partner/sponsor) Olympic Cleen Pty Ltd (sponsor) Geelong Football Club (sponsor) Target Australia (sponsor) Committee for Geelong/Barwon Community leadership Program (sponsor) Mick Kramer, Manager, Handbury Centre for Wellbeing, Geelong Grammar School (partner/stakeholder) North Shore Sports Club (partner/stakeholder) Kylie Fisher, City of Greater Geelong Councillor (partner/stakeholder) Kicks to Glory Page 8
3.4 Four Establish relationships with potential stakeholders, partners and/or sponsors. Members of the Project Team employed a range of communication methods to make contact with the potential stakeholders, partners and/or sponsors they had identified in their brainstorming sessions. These methods included face-to-face interviews, telephone conversations, s and networking through the various committees and organisations with whom the Project Team members were involved. The Project Team was successful in contacting all the stakeholders, partners and/or sponsors that would be required for the project to achieve its mission 3.5 Five Obtain wheelie bins that can be used to collect pre-loved football boots. The Project Team approached Kylie Fisher, City of Greater Geelong Councillor and asked her to put in a request to the City of Greater Geelong Councillor for a donation of four (4) wheelie bins. Councillor Fisher was successful in obtaining four (4) wheelie bins for the program on the proviso that the bins would be returned to the City of Greater Geelong should the program ever cease to operate Kicks to Glory Page 9
3.6 Six Develop a poster/flyer that will be placed on the collection bins, notice boards and in newsletters advertising the Collection Points. Members of the Project Team worked together to design a number of draft posters/flyers that could advertise the collection and distribution points for the project on the bins, in newsletters and as handouts. The drafts of the posters/flyers were presented at the Project team meetings. After all necessary modifications had been done copies of the posters/flyers were printed and attached to the collection and distribution bins as well as used in newsletters and as handouts. 3.7 Seven Find suitable Collection Points and conduct collections of pre-loved football boots. The Project Team contacted Mick Kramer, Manager of the Handbury Centre for Wellbeing at Geelong Grammar School, and asked him to approach the school s administration about becoming partners in the project by placing a Kicks to Glory Collection Bin at the school. Mick Kramer was successful in gaining permission for the Project Team to put a collection bin at Geelong Grammar School. The students donated a large number of pre-loved football boots into the Kicks to Glory collection bin at the school Kicks to Glory Page 10
3.8 Eight Obtain cleaning chemicals to clean and deodorise the pre-loved football boots that have been collected. The Project Team made contact with several local chemical suppliers and obtained quotes for the chemicals that would be required to clean and deodorise the donated pre-loved football boots before they could be re-distributed. Olympic Cleen supplied 5 litres of concentrated deodoriser, and 5 litres of concentrated leather cleaner at no cost to the Project Team. 3.9 Nine Find a long-term storage and distribution point for the Kicks to Glory bins and the collection of donated, pre-loved football boots. The Project Team approached David Milsome, CEO of the North Shore Recreation Club, and asked him to approach the club about becoming partners in the project by allocating space in their newly renovated club rooms for the Kicks to Glory bins and the collection of donated pre-loved football boots David Milsome was successful in negotiating space at the North Shore Recreation Club for the Project Team to store the Kicks to Glory bins and the collection of donated pre-loved football boots. The North Shore Recreation Club also committed to being a partner in the project and a distribution point for the program in the future. Kicks to Glory Page 11
3.10 Ten Develop a Handover plan for the program Kicks to Glory team member, Maurice Morry Anderson, lives in the Northern Suburbs of the City of Greater Geelong. Morry has worked closely with all of the stakeholders, partners and sponsors of the project. The project team asked Morry if he would work with the stakeholders, partners and sponsors to manage the transition that Kicks to Glory must make when the 2012 Barwon Community Leadership Program finishes. Morry agreed to continue to work with the stakeholders, partners and sponsors to manage the transition that Kicks to Glory must make when the 2012 Barwon Community Leadership Program finishes. 4. Conclusion In conclusion it can be said that there is a need for a program that brings together like-minded individuals and organisations within the City of Greater Geelong to collect pre-loved football boots for the purpose of distributing them to children in the Northern Suburbs who want to participate in playing Football but are being held back because they do not have of access to a pair of football boots. This need was identified by members of the 2012 Barwon Community Leadership Program. These BCLP members got together and formed the Kicks to Glory Project Team. The Kicks to Glory Project Team has been able to achieve its vision, mission and all of its objectives. The Kicks to Glory Project is now a project that has legs. Kicks to Glory Page 12
