2 The recognition of sport for development and peace? Sport can play a role in improving the lives of individuals, not only individuals...but whole communities. I am convinced that the time is right to build on that understanding, to encourage governments, development agencies and communities to think how sport can be included more systematically in the plans to help children, particularly those living in the midst of poverty, disease and conflict. 10 The UN Inter-Agency Task Force report 2003 Sport for Development and Peace: Towards Achieving the Millennium Development Goals views sport as......all forms of physical activity that contribute to physical fitness, mental well-being and social interaction. These include play; recreation; organized, casual or competitive sport; and indigenous sports and games. The concept of sport for all is central to this understanding of sport. Sport for all initiatives aim to maximize access to and participation in appropriate forms of activity. Emphasis is placed on participation and the inclusion of all groups in society, regardless of gender, age, ability or race.

56 The vision... Our vision is clear. We see boys and girls running around new and rehabilitated playgrounds, fields and stadiums. We see schools providing physical education as part of their daily curricula and spaces where children out of school can safely play and spend their time. We see teachers trained in physical education and parents, young people and other community members trained as coaches. We see our children growing up healthy, committed to family and friends, prepared for the workplace and the responsibilities of citizenship.
