Coaches The Heart of AYSO Coaches are pivotal to providing the AYSO experience to players and parents You have the opportunity to build a child's self-esteem, help them learn new skills and just have a lot of fun Coaches are the persons best able to deliver the fun that our players and parents expect from AYSO!!!

Coach Duties and Responsibilities 1. It shall be the duty of each coach, referee, and official to: a.conduct himself/herself in a manner becoming a member of AYSO. b.comply with the AYSO Rules & Regulations and AYSO policies, including those related to registration, certification and training. c.encourage clean competition and good sportsmanship d.prohibit negative comments and complaints about officiating. e.present a healthy, athletic environment for team members by neither consuming alcoholic beverages nor using tobacco products during practices or games or in the immediate vicinity of the soccer fields.

Coach Duties and Responsibilities 2. It shall also be the duty of each coach to: a. Be trained consistent with the AYSO National Coaching Program standards for the age/skill level of the team he/she will coach; and train and coach the team to the best of his/her ability. b.remain within the coaches area during the game; a maximum of two coaches is permitted for each team. c. Limit his/her sideline participation during AYSO games to comments that are positive, instructional, and/or encouraging. d.upon team formation, and during all subsequent team gatherings, practices, scrimmages, and games (Regional, inter-regional, Area, Sectional, National and tournaments), have in his/her possession all forms, rosters, waivers and/or identification cards as may be required by AYSO policies so as to verify registration of team members or confirm volunteer qualifications.

AYSO Approach AYSO is about kids having fun and building community We do not try to simply win games, we try to deliver maximum fun for all the players Opposing coaches work together to deliver great game experiences Coaching is not about you or me it s about the children and the game A child s opportunity to be a child don t let the desire to win take away from that AYSO is a child centered program It s for the kids!!!

Our program s goal is for kids to play soccer so we mandate that every player on every team must play at least 50% of every game. It s no fun to spend the game on the bench and that s no way to learn soccer! Play each player at least three quarters of every game, whenever possible. (No player plays 4 quarters if there s players that didn t play 3 quarters yet.) The "Everyone Plays" rule applies to all players, regardless of skill level or age, and regardless of the number of practices they attend. How Coaches Help Everyone Plays - Keep track of who s playing when AND where - Give all players a chance to play all positions at some point during the season - The same players should not always sit out the first quarter of each game AYSO s kids don t ride the bench they play!!

Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible because it s more fun and a better learning experience when teams of similar ability play. It allows for each player to gain the experience of a wide variety of teammates of different skill levels. Most difficult philosophy to fulfill Kids develop at different rates and coach ratings from the past season may not be precise Varying degrees of coaching experience and/or ability Parents often don t understand why their kid cannot be on a team with their friends or a specific coach Instrumental in kids learning the game of soccer Win Some/Lose Some Winning all the time creates complacency and boredom Losing all of the time is disheartening Balanced Teams Allows kids to stretch to achieve and if the stretch they succeed AYSO s kids don t ride the bench they play!!

Open Registration Our program is open to all children between 4 and 19 years of age who want to register and play soccer. Interest and enthusiasm are the only criteria for playing. There are no elimination try-outs and nobody gets cut. Any child who wishes to play may do so, regardless of ability

Encouragement of player effort provides for greater enjoyment for the players and leads to better-skilled and better-motivated players. A coach can be one of the most influential people in a child s life, so AYSO requires they create a positive experience for every boy and girl. Praise and positive encouragement of player effort provides for greater enjoyment by the players and ultimately leads to better-skilled and better-motivated players. Instruction is for practice, not games. Positive Coaching OK to communicate tactical suggestions just so long as you don't do it continuously Do not try to teach positional play at a game by constant instruction Soccer is a Player's Game...once the game is underway the players are expected to make their own decisions as to the right thing to do in any situation, without interference from coaches or spectators The game is the teacher

Positive Coaching Don t shout - a shouter will inevitably get seriously involved in what's happening on the field, and eventually will let his guard slip and some not-quite-positive remark will emerge. Panic shouts of "Get it out of there!", "Shoot!", "Boot it!" just overload the players with noise. They rarely have any useful effect, except to make players feel more nervous and unsure of themselves. FIFA law states that a "coach may convey tactical instructions to his players during the match and must return to his position immediately after giving these instructions. Coach and the other officials must remain within the confines of the technical area AYSO defines the technical area as ten yards either side of the half-way line The spirit of the FIFA law is that coaches convey only occasional instructions to players and these are limited to "tactical", that is "off the ball" instructions. The expectation is that coaches use the game to observe their players in action and use what they see as feedback into the practice situation. Limit coach participation to positive instruction and encouragement

Positive Coaching Positive Instructive Encouraging

We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude, and our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO. The coach must place sportsmanship as one of his vital coaching philosophies and must fully understand that good sportsmanship will generate a more effective soccer team. Manage your parents. Good Sportsmanship No dissent with referees. Period. No blowouts - with the right management strategies, an otherwise lopsided, boring game can be managed to be close, and without asking players to hold back.

Good Sportsmanship If you have a weaker or stronger than average team, touch base with your upcoming opposing coach before game day. Give a heads-up so that both coaches can prepare for the possibility of dealing with the issue at the game. At the end of the game shake hands of opposing team and referees. Game cards with player rotation, score and coach signature will be collected by referees after every game Work collaboratively with other coaches to make sure all the kids have a great time.

Player Development We believe that all players should be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team, in order to maximize their enjoyment of the game. Region 894 Summer Soccer Camps Challenger Sports Summer Camp June 13 17, morning camp UK International Summer Camp July 11 15, evening camp

In my words and action, I pledge to: 1. Enthusiastically support and practice the AYSO Philosophies of: Everyone Plays, Open Registration, Balanced Teams, Positive Coaching and Good Sportsmanship. 2. Stay informed about sound principles of coaching and child development. 3. Respect the game and know the Laws. 4. Emphasize to my players that they must abide by the Laws of the Game at all times. 5. Develop a true respect for the judgment of all referees. 6. Develop a team respect for the ability of our opponents. 7. Ensure a safe environment for my players. 8. Never yell at or ridicule a player. 9. Always set a good example. AYSO Coach Pledge 10. Remember that soccer is a game and all games should be fun.

Referees Each team should have a trained referee A parent cannot jump in to help Coaches: we ask for your help in recruiting Ask the parents on your team Ask the older siblings of your team members (age 10+) Tell the parents: if the coach is also the referee, then there can be no coach during the game Referees responsible to control the games Be respectful Referees have the final say If you disagree with a call, handle it in an appropriate manner after the game do not interrupt the game unless there is an imminent safety concern 22

No Referee, Game Canceled Policy If a game does not have at least one referee by the deadline, the game will be canceled For games starting before noon, the deadline is 10pm the night before For games noon and after, the deadline is four hours before the start of game
