2 2 COLLEGIANS REMAIN UNDEFEATED BLUES & IVANHOE DOWNED NORTH O.B. STILL WITHOUT A WIN Last Saturday's A Section matches provided plenty of excitement and featured some great football. O. Scotch allowed Blues a six goal start but gradually pegged their visitors back to record a 3 point win that was full of character and a triumph for coach Trevor Read. Scotch were prepared to run all day and were well rewarded for their efforts. De La Salle headed Ivanhoe for much of the day and by holding them goalless in the last quarter hung on to win, by 9 points. Marcellin O.C. somehow found space on the Gunn Reserve and by efficient handball ran all over Ormond in the second half. Ormond were made to look slow and had no answer to Marcellin's string of clever little men. North O.B. led O. Xavs at three-quarter time, but Xavs finished stronger and although their goal kicking was hopelessly astray were too strong in the air and were rightful winners. North coach Trevor Scanlon ordered compulsory Sunday training in an endeavour to arrest the slide and their match today with O. Scotch is most crucial for the reigning premier. Old Melburnians were right up with the competition leaders, Collegians, for 21/2 quarters but when Collegians applied the real pressure just before three-quarter time, OMS showed a lack of experience which enabled the Lions to forge ahead for their third win. IN THE GOAL SQUARE Bulleen Templestowe, Old Paradians and Kew all had good wins away from home and share the lead in B Section. Alphington were too strong for A.J.A,x and its home match today against Old Paradians is vital if it is to stay in contact with the leaders. Uni. Blacks won its first match for the season, crushing Coburg by 16 goals. In C Section St. Kilda CBC after a slow start showed Old Haileybury the way home to the tune of 10 goals. However other matches were far more tense. Parkside fell in by 3 points against a kickless Old Brighton and W. Brunswick just failed at Bluff Road, Hampton Rovers winning by 15 points. St. Kevin's got to within a goal of Caulfield Grammarians, but Alan Poore's lad steadied and won by 13 points. Therry CCOB is the leader in D Section after a close tussle with Fawkner, holding a 2 point advantage over North Brunswick. Old Carey lost its third close game, this time to Old Trinity in E Section and Bulleen United scraped home by 2 points against Heatherton. In F Section ANZ were far from disgraced in the battle of the Banks and Old Geelong came from behind to beat Clayton in a game of high standard. Old Scotch lost its first match for the season against Banyule in U. 19 Premier Division leaving St. Bernard's outright leaders. Marcellin remains undefeated in Zone I as are St. Kilda CBC and Old Xavs in Zone 2. REPCO CYCLE ERGOMETER... Our club Deputy C, ptain, 1980 Best and Fairest and 1982 leading eo,dkicker, has already made a fine start to the ;,,,son with a 6-goal bag against Melbourne High. Schmidty joined us in 1974 and steadily progressed to senior ranks where he held down the full-back position for a few years. Since 1980 however, he has, prrt much of his time on the forward line. One of uutny individual highlights would be his 11-goal performance against Alphington in 1981 (he broke his jaw the next week!). Neville's long kickig, sure hands and sheer brute strength have been features of his play over the last ten seasons. Best of luck for the next 50 "Ox" and may they be as successful outings as the last 150. All at O.H. salute an d congratulate you. 150 GAMES AT OLD SCOTCH All at Old Scotch congratulate Don Symington on plaving his 150th game recently. Affectionately known as "Skinny" to his teammates, Don has played many excellent senior games and was a member of the successful 1970 Premiership side coached by David Kidd. Now a successful medical practitioner he still finds time to play with the Reserves and works actively off the field as a Vice-President to the Club. We all look confidently to his 200th game in a few years time. Well done Skinny! TWO TONS REACHED AT WEST BRUNSWICK All star Ken Vazquez has now finally after a few stops and starts zoomed too his target at last. Ken a Ii*urehead at West, he has been here a long time, will hold his head high when he takes to the field for his big game. 200 games of sweat and injury, nagging byjulie, but now a dream come true, we at West are proud that one of our older brigade has made it. K4n, tonight get a cab home. Great work and well done. 50 GAMES AT OLD GEELONG Old Geelong congratulates John Keillor on reaching his 50th game for the Club today. 150 FOR BULLANT PAIR The first games of the 1983 season saw two young Bullant stars play their 150th for the club. Riek Demarte is an extremely skillful and speedy rover, and 'played in Bulleen-Templestowe's Reserve Premiership side last season. Rick resumed with the Bullatits after a stint at Collingwood 3rds. We all congratulate Rick on his milestone, he's a great asset to the Senior side! BALL BRIEFS Tim (Nipper) Merrett captained last year's Under 19's Premiership team and played in the 1981 'Under 19 Premiership side. Nipper comes from a well known V.F.L. football family and is a very classy and versatile footballer. Well done Nipper. All at Bu lleen-templestowe look forward to seeing many more games from these talented pair and know they'll play a major part in our aim to reach "A" grade amateurs. 50 GAMES AT WEST BRUNSWICK 50 games up for Darrin Anderson at West Brunswick. Darrin, who has come up from our junior team two seasons ago, has cemented his position in our reserve side, and is roving well. Darrin, all your mates and fellow players along with committee and supporters wish you well, and look forward to your next fifty games. 100 GAMES AT OLD MENTONE Congratulations are extended to Mike "Sticky " Durack on playing his one hundredth game with the Old Mentonian Football Club. Mike, a foundation member of the club, has given great service to the toners. A tireless worker on general and social committees (when he is not on holidays) Mike has been awarded our Best Club Member Award in 1976, and last year was presented with a V.A.F.A. Merit Certificate. A Life Member of the Club, Stick's football career has been often interrupted by injury. However, few who have seen him play will forget his individual style. A versatile utility player, Mike is equally at home in attack or defence. Once again Mike. congratulations, and we look forward to seeing that number ten jumper flashing around the packs in many more games for the Panthers. Everyone at the Old Mentonians would like to congratulate Doug Ferrari and Lee Mickelburough on playing fifty games with the club. Both Doug and Lee are enthusiastic and popular members of our team, and both are extremely active socially. Well done to both of them, and we look forward to them playing many more games with the Panthers. KEW NOTE S Kew reserves found it hard to believe as the last kick at the final ball last Saturday took the game from them. After coming back they thought they had the game sewn up and the first win for 8 :1. Coach Wayne Blay certainly is looking for a determined effort to gain 4 points and so support the winning run of the seniors and Under 19's. Kew now in its 85th playing season is about set to open it's new Social rooms...thanks to the local Council, many supporters (some still missing) and some sponsors. No longer the need to drink amongst the tape and mud of a hard fought game with the wiff of linament filling the change room. Any Amateur footballer or supporter who knows something of Kew's glorious past, wins and losses are invited to let the committee know as a full invitation list to the official opening is needed. Kew don't want to overlook anyone. Call Secretary or

3 O ues Get a burst of PK UMPIRE'S CORNER MIKE MURRAY'S 150TH Mike today officiates in his 150th game as goal umpire. He commenced with the Amateurs in 1973 following a five year stint at Ormond. He played 37 games with the `Brown and Blues', when a fractured leg halted his career. For two years he goal umpired for Ormond. This apprenticeship provided Mike with the basis for a most enjoyable and rewarding career with the V.A.F.A., which has seen him officiate in 29 `Finals' including 10 Grand Finals. A stickler for statistics, Mike reveals that in his 150 games, he has worked with 55 field umpires, 57 goal umpires, officiated at 35 grounds and witnessed 45 teams in action. I doubt if Mike has ever had any difficulties with his scorecards. Mike now has his sights set on his 200th appearance as well as officiating in an `A' section Grand Final before the white flags are put away. freshness. Chewing P.K gum can help you concentrate. Its fresh, clean flavour will giv, you a lift. It'll help your game. EDITOR'S NOTE!!!TEAM LISTS!!! Of 62 clubs, only 25 have provided copies of team lists for publication in the record. Delegates were advised on March 28th that these lists were required before round 3! As continuation of the Amateur Footballer is often under review, such poor response does little in providing support.
