1 Name: ACTIVITY 1 RUNNING - HIGH KNEE-LIFT RUN HURLING / FOOTBALL FITNESS EXERCISE This exercise to develop coordination and running skills is generally suitable for players of 4-6 years Jog on the spot using an exaggerated high knee-lift Key Points Run on the balls of the feet; keep the head up and the back straight Synchronise arm and leg movement, i.e, lift the right knee and left arm simultaneously and vice versa Equipment An inventory of equipment to support ABC exercises is available in the Resources section
2 ACTIVITY 2 RUNNING - HEEL FLICKS HURLING / FOOTBALL FITNESS EXERCISE This exercise to develop running skills is generally suitable for players of 4-6 years In a stationary position hold the arms behind the back; one at a time flick the heels up to touch the bottom Introduce the arms; perform the exercise using a ladder, putting every foot in every second space. Key Points Ensure the ladder is properly laid out; reset it if necessary before each go Stand upright with the head up Synchronise arm and leg movement, i.e. lift the right knee and right arm simultaneously and vice versa Equipment An inventory of equipment to support ABC exercises is available in the Resources section
3 ACTIVITY 3 RUNNING - TEAM PURSUIT HURLING / FOOTBALL FITNESS EXERCISE This is a team relay exercise to develop running skills Mark out a square or circular circuit using cones Divide the players into teams; team members position themselves at equal distances apart around the circuit, one from team A then one from team B and so on The objective is to catch up to the player from the other team before reaching your team mate who continues the pursuit Tag to release the next player on the team or use a baton or a ball to pass on Key Points Ensure the players have enough room to perform the exercise safely Use short strides when turning and longer strides when running in a straight line Equipment An inventory of equipment to support ABC exercises is available in the Resources section
4 ACTIVITY 4 FRONTAL BLOCK - IMAGINARY BLOCK This is a basic drill to practice the Frontal Block technique Position the players along a line two meters apart On the whistle, the players move from the Ready Position to the Frontal Block position and back to the Ready Position The coach may count or talk the players through the stages of the technique to help them with the sequence and the timing Repeat the drill several times Task - As the players improve, complete the drill first while walking, and eventually while jogging ACTIVITY 5 FRONTAL BLOCK - CONTACT BLOCK This basic drill to practice the Frontal Block technique aims to build the players confidence in the contact situation The players line up in single file behind a cone The Coach stands approximately 2 meters away directly in front of the first player in the line Each player in turn advances to perform a block down on the coach striking an imaginary ball The coach should adjust the strength of their swing to suit each player s confidence and ability Equipment - As players gain confidence, introduce a ball, for example a First Touch sliotar
5 ACTIVITY 6 HAND PASS - PASS IN PAIRS This is a basic drill to practice the HandPass technique in a stationary position Divide the players into pairs; one ball per pair The players stand facing each other two Hurley lengths apart Each player in turn hand passes the ball to their partner who catches it and hand passes it back Task - To increase the challenge; Alternate between using the dominant and non-dominant hands to pass ACTIVITY 7 HAND PASS - PRESSURE PASS HURLING INTERMEDIATE DRILL This is a intermediate drill to practice the Hand Pass technique that requires the players to catch and pass in different directions Divide the players into groups of three; each group forming a triangle Two players act as feeders, with one ball each; the third player is the central player The central player must take and return a pass from each player in turn for a set period of time Reverse the roles, giving each player the chance to be the central player
6 Task - To increase the challenge; the feeders pass the ball as the central player returns the previous pass

8 ACTIVITY 8 ROLL LIFT - STATIONARY ROLL LIFT This is a basic drill to practice the roll lift technique in a stationary position Divide the players into pairs; one ball per pair One player in each pair roll lifts the ball repeatedly for 1 minute The second player in each pair counts successful attempts by their partner After 1 minute the players switch roles Encourage players to beat their own record on repeat attempts Task - Each player roll lifts the ball in turn; challenge each pair to perform as many roll lifts as possible in 1 minute ACTIVITY 9 ROLL LIFT - ROLL LIFT & MOVE This is a basic drill to practice the Roll-Lift technique Mark out a square or circle using cones Position one player and one ball at each cone Players roll lift the ball at each cone repeatedly before moving to next cone Task - The players carry the ball to the next cone after completing each Roll Lift.
