1 Week 346 MARY (MAISIE) HIGGINS RIP It is with regret that I report the loss of yet another member of our Region. Maisie Higgins. Maisie was in her 102 nd year and played bridge up to her 100 th Birthday. Maisie was a very special person and was a much valued and respected member of Lee Bridge Club many years. To her sons Tom, Kevin and John, Daughter Nuala and extended family we extend our sincere. Maisie will be sadly missed by many bridge friends and colleagues. Maisie made her final journey home to Glasgow for interment. May she rest in Peace CAMROSE TRIALS IMPORTANT REVISION OF QUALIFICATION CRITERIA QUALIFICATION Each Team entering these Trials must be composed of players each of whom holds a total of 100 National points as of July 1 st or has won 50 National Points during the last 3 years. Teams may seek derogation from this requirement by submitting application to the International Committee with their entry, detailing reasons why such derogation from the National point holding should be granted in their case. Participation in previous C.B.A.I. (or I.B.U.) trials will not be deemed a sufficient reason to grant derogation. The I.C. reserves the right to accept entries from Teams whose National Point holding fails to meet these requirements. In this context favourable consideration may be given to a request from a team composed of 2 players with a substantial National point holding who wish to play with players whose national point holding falls marginally short of the stipulated 100 points. A shortfall in National point holding of up to 30 or in exceptional circumstances 40 National Points will be treated as marginal by the International Committee. It consists of matches against teams from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and will be played on the week-end of the 17 th - 19 th April 2015 in England. DATES In response to representations made by a number of players, the October bank holiday week-end from 25 th th. October 2014 as tentatively designated in the C.B.A.I. calendar shown on the website, will NOT be used. As in previous years, trials to select a women s team to represent the Republic of Ireland will now be held over the two week-ends of 14 th to 16 th November and 21 st to 23 rd November 2014 in the Dublin area.

2 ENTRIES are invited from women s teams consisting of four or six players who are interested in representing the Republic of Ireland in the Lady Milne. Notification of entry, accompanied by the entrance fee of 400 for team-of-four and 600 for team-of-six, should be received by the C.B.A.I. office on or before 10 th. October The International Committee may accept entries after this date. FORMAT In response to requests from players, and in a change to recent years, the format for these trials will be played as a Teams tournament wherein each team will play matches against each other team in either a single or double round robin series, to be determined by entry. The exact schedule of these trials (i.e. number of boards, start times etc.) will be given in the supplementary notice following receipt of entries. The International Committee may specify the first week-end as a qualifying round, with the leading four (4) teams playing a round robin in the final week-end. QUALIFICATION Each player entering these trials must hold a minimum of seventy-five (75) National Points as at the 1 st September Players may seek derogation from this requirement, by submitting application to the International Committee with their entry, detailing reasons why such partial revocation be granted in their case. The International Committee will accept applications from teams that include one or two players each with at least fifty (50) National Points, provided there are one or two other players respectively on the team whose National Point holdings will combine with theirs to exceed one hundred and fifty (150) National Points for the two players. There is no restriction on the composition of pairs on a team; the winning team in these trials will be nominated to represent the Republic of Ireland in the Lady Milne in April If the winning team consists of four players, an additional pair will be added by the International Committee based on the scores by those pairs in teams finishing in 2 nd and 3 rd place. The reserve pair will be chosen in the same way. SUBSTITUTES Subject to the approval of the International Committee, a team of four players may be allowed one female substitute for no more than two sessions of play. A substitute may not play in more than one partnership. A substitution, which in the opinion of the International Committee significantly affects the strength/weakness of a pair, is unlikely to be approved. If a suitable substitute cannot be found for a session, the Tournament Director (T.D.) will award a score of twelve (12) V.P. or such higher percentage as the nonoffending team achieves in the competition. Substitutes will not be allowed on teams of six players. A request for a substitute for what the International Committee considers a convenience reason will not be approved. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the T.D. is empowered to make emergency substitutions. In order to qualify to represent Ireland in the Lady Milne, each player on a team-of-four must play throughout the trials, unless a substitute has been accepted, and each player on team-of-six must play a minimum of 50% of the boards in each stage (i.e. qualifying / final) of the trials. SYSTEMS The W.B.F. convention card (or equivalent) must be used to describe the bidding system and conventions of each pair participating in these trials. It may be downloaded from the Ecats website ( or is available from the C.B.A.I. office. All players participating in these trials must have two identical copies of their systems available to present to their opponents before a session of play commences. Teams of six players are restricted to a maximum of four bidding systems. Failure to fulfil these obligations or presentation of a convention card that is insufficiently detailed (in the opinion of the T.D.) will render that team liable to a penalty of one V.P. per match. Highly Unusual Methods (H.U.M.) as defined by W.B.F. systems policy, are not permitted. Brown Sticker Conventions (B.S.C.) as defined by W.B.F. systems policy, are allowed, provided the details of such convention is submitted on the appropriate form, available from the C.B.A.I. office, when entering for these trials. Failure to submit such form with one s entry will result in the B.S.C. being prohibited. TRAINING/COACHING It is intended to designate two week-ends in the first quarter of 2015 as training / coaching week-ends for all players in the trials. It is expected that the three pairs on the winning team and the reserve pair will attend at least one of these week-end sessions, as non-attendance may result in the withdrawal of the invitation to represent the Republic of Ireland in the Lady Milne trophy in April GENERAL The International Committee is empowered to alter any of the arrangements or conditions including dates, times and venue, and to decide on all matters affecting these trials. Every player who enters
